Transportation and electricity systems integration via electric vehicle charging-as-a-service: A review of techno-economic and societal benefits

Here, in support of global decarbonization efforts, the adoption of electric vehicles is proceeding rapidly across transportation sectors, population groups, and regions. However, access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure remains sparse and inequitable, and technical, economic, and procedural challenges have encumbered its expansion. Charging-as-a-service, which can mitigate cost and effort risks of charging equipment ownership, adds a means of meeting many of these challenges. As charging-as-a-service has not been analyzed or addressed in the scholarly literature, we synthesize media, marketing, and analogous scholarly publications to categorize and describe the functions asserted by existing charging-as-a-service vendors. We demonstrate and quantify the benefits of many of these functions via four example business cases, sited at a detached residence, a multi-unit dwelling, a consumer-facing business, and a commercial fleet depot. Outcomes show that savings and revenues realized via charging-as-a-service can reduce charging costs, beneficially shape grid loads, and make charging installation economical where it otherwise would not be. Discussion highlights the need to deploy charging-as-a-service in cooperation with initiatives promoting societal benefits, including charging access equity.

An Integrated Traction Drive with a High Speed Surface Permanent Magnet External Rotor Motor for Electric Vehicles

This work presents the detailed design of an outer rotor motor and integrated drive for passenger electric vehicles. The motor uses non-heavy rare earth permanent magnets and operates at a top speed of 20,000rpm. In-slot ceramic heat exchangers are utilized for the cooling of the windings. The external rotor configuration of the motor leaves a significant amount of space in the stator bore, which is leveraged for the integration of the power electronics. A high speed external rotor motor creates a number of mechanical, thermal and assembly challenges and this work presents detailed thermal, mechanical and rotordynamics analysis.

Cross-Market Price Difference Forecast Using Deep Learning for Electricity Markets

Price forecasting is in the center of decision making in electricity markets. Many researches have been done in forecasting energy prices while little research has been reported on forecasting price difference between day-ahead and realtime markets due to its high volatility, which however plays a critical role in virtual trading. To this end, this paper takes the first attempt to employ novel deep learning architecture with Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) units to forecast the price difference between day-ahead and real-time markets for the same node. The raw data is collected from PJM market, processed and fed into the proposed network. The Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and customized performance metric are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Case studies show that it outperforms the traditional statistical models like ARIMA, and machine learning models like XGBoost and SVR methods in both RMSE and the capability of forecasting the sign of price difference. Additionally, to cross-market price difference forecast, the proposed approach has the potential to be applied to solve other forecasting problems such as price spread forecast in DA market for Financial Transmission Right (FTR) trading purpose.

Severe Temperature Impact Study on Ferrite Electromagnetic Shielding for Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging

Wireless charging of an electric vehicle (EV) is an emerging technology that enables noncontact charging, which has advantages in terms of convenience and flexibility. However, the embedded charging pads under and on the ground expose the charging coils, ferrite shielding, and related components to a potentially severe external environment. To study the electromagnetic shielding performance under such extreme temperature conditions, ferrite shielding material's permeability characteristics are tested under temperatures as low as -50°C to as high as 240°C. Referring to the official recorded lowest and highest temperature of the United States, in this paper, it is assumed that the operation temperature ranges from -50°C to 57°C as the coldest winter and hottest summer environment for WPT application. Electromagnetic performance, shielding, and associated stray magnetic emissions are simulated by using three-dimensional (3D) transient simulations to study the impact of low and high temperature on electromagnetic shielding performance. Based on ferrite testing data, from -50°C low temperature to 57°C high temperature, the ferrite's relative permeability ranges from 2550 to 3727. The simulation study indicates that there won't be significant impact on the EM shielding performance for WPT operated under those severe environment temperature conditions.

Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging Station Reliability, Resilience, and Location on Electric Vehicle Adoption

While the majority of electric vehicle (EV) charging events in the United States occur at home, issues with public charging stations are consistently found to be a top reason that potential EV buyers do not purchase an EV, demonstrating that both EVSE reliability and availability impacts EV adoption. This report explores multiple parameters that impact EVSE reliability and deployment, which in turn impact EV sales. These include extreme weather, codes and standards, region (urban vs. rural), and grid network type. Grid reliability was not found to impact EV adoption. The relationships between EV station reliability, station resilience, grid resilience, and EV adoption are largely outside the scope of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) Automotive Deployment Options Projection Tool (ADOPT) and other vehicle adoption models, so the methodology of this report is varied. Section 2 sets the baseline for infrastructure reliability, user satisfaction, and maintenance practices. Section 3 explores the ways that electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) reliability impacts the relationship between EVSE and EV adoption. Section 4 shows how geographical categories such as urban, rural, large grid, off-grid, or microgrid can be helpful in EVSE deployment strategies, as well as how the relationship between EVSE and EV adoption differs among these categories. Section 5 investigates the impacts of grid reliability and infrastructure resilience on EV adoption. Finally, Section 6 reverses the perspective to examine the impact that EVs and EVSE have on grid resilience and reliability. As recent funding initiatives result in an expansion of public chargers across the United States, as well as an increase in the uptime of existing chargers, EV adoption will likely grow.

Uncontrolled Electric Vehicle Charging Impacts on Distribution Electric Power Systems with Primarily Residential, Commercial or Industrial Loads

An increase in Electric Vehicles (EV) will result in higher demands on the distribution electric power systems (EPS) which may result in thermal line overloading and low voltage violations. To understand the impact, this work simulates two EV charging scenarios (home- and work-dominant) under potential 2030 EV adoption levels on 10 actual distribution feeders that support residential, commercial, and industrial loads. The simulations include actual driving patterns of existing (non-EV) vehicles taken from global positioning system (GPS) data. The GPS driving behaviors, which explain the spatial and temporal EV charging demands, provide information on each vehicles travel distance, dwell locations, and dwell durations. Then, the EPS simulations incorporate the EV charging demands to calculate the power flow across the feeder. Simulation results show that voltage impacts are modest (less than 0.01 p.u.), likely due to robust feeder designs and the models only represent the high-voltage (“primary”) system components. Line loading impacts are more noticeable, with a maximum increase of about 15%. Additionally, the feeder peak load times experience a slight shift for residential and mixed feeders (≈1 h), not at all for the industrial, and 8 h for the commercial feeder.

Opportunities and Challenges of High-Energy Lithium Metal Batteries for Electric Vehicle Applications

Lithium metal batteries have great advantages over state-of-the-art lithium ion batteries in terms of energy density and cost, which present huge opportunities for long-range and low-cost electric vehicles in the future. However, the automotive industry has critical requirements on specific characteristics of battery cells, including but not limited to cycle life, working temperature range, fast discharge–charge capability, volume change, safety, and so on. In this Focus Review, we discuss both the cell- and system-level requirements and challenges of high-energy-density lithium metal batteries for future electrical vehicle applications and highlight some recent key progress in these aspects. Furthermore, our main objective is to identify key strategies on how to solve these challenges and inspire more research and development effort to accelerate the practical applications of lithium metal batteries.
