Cost of Fish Exclusion Technologies for Hydropower

This dataset compiles data on the costs of environmental mitigations related to fish exclusion for 35 hydropower projects based on documents obtained from the U.S Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Data for all measures and their associated project-specific information, including installed and hydraulic capacities, were manually extracted from environmental impact statements and/or environmental assessment (EIS/EA) documents. All data were consolidated in a comma-separated (.csv) file, referred to as the Cost of Fish Exclusion Technologies for Hydropower Database.

Quantum Choreography of the Nucleus: Rotations, Vibrations, and Emergent Structure

Abstract Nuclei are complex many-body quantum systems where interactions of the neutrons and protons via the strong, the weak, and the electromagnetic forces lead to the emergence of simple patterns of energy states that have been described by various theoretical approaches. One of the goals of all the theoretical models is the development of a universal theory that can be applied across the entire chart of nuclides. Significant progress has been made by experiments as well as the increasing sophistication of models, but a universal theory has yet to be established. A recent review of nuclei in the Z = 50–82 region of the chart of nuclides has analyzed all the available compiled data from several decades of studies towards a clarification of the low-lying structure of nuclei. Other reviews have reported and explained the emergence of multiple different shapes in nuclei at somewhat higher excitation energies than the ground state. Some have challenged the interpretation of the first excited K π = 0 + band as a vibration of ground state. This work attempts to provide a guide to determining the nature of the first excited K π = 0 + band in nuclei by the combined use of nuclear lifetimes, energy level evolutions, dynamic moments of inertia, and intrinsic quadrupole moments extracted from transition probabilities. The result is that for a subset of the nuclei in this region, the K π = 0 + band is consistent with the traditional 𝛽-vibration description of an oscillation built on the ground state.

Development of improved pyroelectric detectors; Literature survey of pyroelectric materials and their characteristics

The object of this program is to improve the detectivity of the pyroelectric detector with the ultimate goal of operation at or near the temperature-noise limit. Two general areas of investigation are undertaken. The first is to improve responsivity through the use of new materials. The second is directed toward reduction of noise and will be effected with improved field effect transistor characteristics, and improved electroding of the pyroelectric material. The search for new materials has begun with a review of the literature on pyroelectric materials in several languages. The compiled data includes an extensive list of references. From this, several materials have already been selected for investigation. FETs are being obtained from various manufacturers, evaluated, and selected units will be tested with pyroelectric elements as complete detectors.

Fatigue Tests with Random Flight Simulation Loading

Crack propagation was studied in a full-scale wing structure under different simulated flight conditions. Omission of low-amplitude gust cycles had a small effect on the crack rate. Truncation of the infrequently occurring high-amplitude gust cycles to a lower level had a noticeably accelerating effect on crack growth. The application of fail-safe load (100 percent limit load) effectively stopped subsequent crack growth under resumed flight-simulation loading. In another flight-simulation test series on sheet specimens, the variables studied are the design stress level and the cyclic frequency of the random gust loading. Inflight mean stresses vary from 5.5 to 10.0 kg/sq mm. The effect of the stress level is larger for the 2024 alloy than for the 7075 alloy. Three frequencies were employed: namely, 10 cps, 1 cps, and 0.1 cps. The frequency effect was small. The advantages and limitations of flight-simulation tests are compared with those of alternative test procedures such as constant-amplitude tests, program tests, and random-load tests. Various testing purposes are considered. The variables of flight-simulation tests are listed and their effects are discussed. A proposal is made for performing systematic flight-simulation tests in such a way that the compiled data may be used as a source of reference.

Note on variations in the 'quasi-biennial' oscillation.

Data compiled since 1962 are examined in an effort to quantify further the observed variations in the 'quasi-biennial' oscillation (QBO). A further study of temperatures and zonal winds is conducted for Canton Island, Ascension Island, and Balboa, C.Z. Statistics are derived for the period of record prior to 1962 and for that subsequent to 1962. The results of the investigation suggest that the QBO has remained in roughly geostrophic equilibrium since it was first observed.-

Equations of motion of the lunar roving vehicle.

Equations of motion have been formulated for a four-wheel vehicle as it traverses a terrain characterized by slopes, craters, bumps, washboards, or a power spectrum. Independent suspension and electric motor propulsion are considered. These equations were programmed on the UNIVAC 1108 digital computer. Results are given for the steerability of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) which was found to be satisfactory for normal operating speeds and turning radii. The vehicle was also found to be satisfactory against overturning in both the pitch and roll mode, and results are presented for various speeds as the LRV engages a bump on meter in diameter and of varying heights. Speed, power consumption, and load characteristics are presented for the LRV traversing a simulated lunar soil at full throttle. Comparisons are given against data compiled from the Apollo 15 mission.

Need for a regional wind survey

Accurate measurements for the purpose of estimating wind energies are proposed in those regions of the USA where the greatest potentials exists. Preliminary wind characteristic calculations from weather station data are provided for the Southern Great Plains region; wind energies from 153 to 212 kW-hr/(ft squared-per year) for 1970 to 1972 are determined. It is concluded that a wind energy survey based on data compiled from weather service stations is feasible for determining the energy potential of a windpowered integrated energy network.

Studies of encapsulant materials for terrestrial solar-cell arrays

Study 1 of this contract is entitled ""Evaluation of World Experience and Properties of Materials for Encapsulation of Terrestrial Solar-Cell Arrays.'' The approach of this study is to review and analyze world experience and to compile data on properties of encapsulants for photovoltaic cells and for related applications. The objective of the effort is to recommend candidate materials and processes for encapsulating terrestrial photovoltaic arrays at low cost for a service life greater than 20 years. The objectives of Study 2, ""Definition of Encapsulant Service Environments and Test Conditions,'' are to develop the climatic/environmental data required to define the frequency and duration of detrimental environmental conditions in a 20-year array lifetime and to develop a corresponding test schedule for encapsulant systems.

Global plate tectonics and the secular motion of the pole

Astronomical data compiled during the last 70 years by the international organizations providing the coordinates of the instantaneous pole clearly shows a persistent drift of the mean pole. The differential contributions to the earth's second-order tensor of inertia were obtained and applied, resulting in no significant displacement of the earth's principal axis. In view of the above, the effect that theoretical geophysical models for absolute plate velocities may have on an apparent displacement of the mean pole as a consequence of station drifting was analyzed. The investigation also reports new values for the crustal tensor of inertia (assuming an ellipsoidal earth) and the orientation of its axis of figure, reopening the old speculation of a possible sliding of the whole crustover the upper mantle, including the supporting geophysical and astronomic evidence.
