Abstract A regional perspective is taken to investigate the intriguing ∼25‐day periodicity in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) baroclinic annular mode (BAM) and the possible underlying mechanisms. Results show that the 25‐day periodicity exists not only in the zonal average but also in the regional average of eddy activity as long as the domain of the average is wide enough to accommodate a wave packet. The favorable domain for the ∼25 days periodicity is located downstream of the largest baroclinicity in midlatitudes. The wave activity developed there can travel circumglobally several times with a typical group velocity of 25 m s −1 , and reenter the domain every 12.5 days, setting the base periodicity. A slower oceanic oscillation at a time scale of ∼100 days in the same region appears to select and reinforce the multiples of 12.5 days, giving rise to a pronounced ∼25‐day periodicity in the wave activity.
Use of a microextraction device allows for ready sampling of solid substrates, such as cotton swipes, allowing transfer of sub-microgram quantities for multielement ICP-MS analysis.

Following a crossover Superfluidity in fermionic systems occurs through the pairing of fermions into bosons, which can undergo condensation. Depending on the strength of the interactions between fermions, the pairs range from large and overlapping to tightly bound. The crossover between these two limits has been explored in ultracold Fermi gases. Liu et al . observed the crossover in an electronic system consisting of two layers of graphene separated by an insulating barrier and placed in a magnetic field. In this two-dimensional system, the pairs were excitons formed from an electron in one layer and a hole in the other. The researchers used magnetic field and layer separation to tune the interactions and detected the signatures of superfluidity through transport measurements. —JS
Ethylene is recognized as one of the most significant chemicals globally. The projected ethylene production for 2023 stands at 227.6 million tonnes, with expectations of continued demand growth. The primary use of ethylene, accounting for over 76%, lies in the production of plastics such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polystyrene. Despite the enduring carbon retention potential of plastics themselves, traditional ethylene feedstock production from fossil resources contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions, ranging from 0.29 to 2.29 kg CO2 /kg Ethylene depending on various factors like feedstock and process design. Various decarbonization strategies, including the utilization of hydrogen as a primary heat source, have been proposed to reduce the carbon footprint of ethylene production, but their efficacy remains limited, offering at best a 0–30% reduction in on-site CO 2 emissions.

The System Thermal Hydraulics (STH) code SAM has been coupled to the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code Simcenter STAR-CCM+ utilizing a hybrid domain overlapping method with an explicit coupling in time. The coupling aims to extend the STH code’s applicability to scenarios where local momentum and energy transfers are important yet difficult for STH codes to capture, such as three-dimensional (3D) mixing. The coupling method’s numerical stability was verified in the past against two closed-loop configurations, and it was validated against a double T-junction experiment with 3D scalar mixing. In the present work, the coupling method is validated against the TALL-3D STH/CFD coupling benchmark facility. TALL-3D is a three-legged, liquid-metal facility with a large, pool-type enclosure (test section) that exhibits 3D flow effects to be modeled by a CFD code. The rest of the system exhibits approximately 1D behavior well-predicted by an STH code. First, the present STAR-CCM+ CFD model of the 3D test section is validated against experimental data. Then, the SAM-STARCCM+ coupled model is validated against six different TALL-3D steady states, including SAM standalone model results for comparison. Lastly, the SAM-STARCCM+ coupled model is validated against two TALL-3D transients, one exhibiting flow reversal in the test section and one exhibiting nonlinear, Limit Cycle Oscillations (LCO). For the first transient, the SAM-STARCCM+ coupled model properly predicts an increase in the test section’s inlet temperature during flow reversal, and this is not predicted by the SAM standalone model. Following flow reversal, the SAM-STARCCM+ coupled model better-predicts the initial flow recovery and following oscillations as the system approaches a final natural circulation state. For the second transient, no true final steady state is observed due to LCO. Neither the SAM-STARCCM+ coupled model nor the SAM standalone model can perfectly capture the experiment’s changing oscillation frequency during the transient. However, the SAM-STARCCM+ coupled model does reproduce the oscillatory feedback observed in the system. This is a significant achievement as the SAM-STARCCM+ coupled model only uses an explicit coupling in time, as opposed to a semi-implicit coupling. In comparison, previous STH/CFD coupling efforts of the TALL-3D facility required semi-implicit coupling to obtain similar results.
