Unraveling electronic correlations in warm dense quantum plasmas

The study of matter at extreme densities and temperatures has emerged as a highly active frontier at the interface of plasma physics, material science and quantum chemistry with relevance for planetary modeling and inertial confinement fusion. A particular feature of such warm dense matter is the complex interplay of Coulomb interactions, quantum effects, and thermal excitations, making its rigorous theoretical description challenging. Here, we demonstrate how ab initio path integral Monte Carlo simulations allow us to unravel this intricate interplay for the example of strongly compressed beryllium, focusing on two X-ray Thomson scattering data sets obtained at the National Ignition Facility. We find excellent agreement between simulation and experiment with a very high level of consistency between independent observations without the need for any empirical input parameters. Our results call into question previously used chemical models, with important implications for the interpretation of scattering experiments and radiation hydrodynamics simulations.

Ferromagnetism out of charge fluctuation of strongly correlated electrons in κ -(BEDT-TTF) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Br

We perform magnetic susceptibility and magnetic torque measurements on the organic κ-(BEDT-TTF) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Br, which is recently suggested to host an exotic quantum dipole-liquid in its low-temperature insulating phase. Below the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature, the magnetic susceptibility follows a Curie–Weiss law with a positive Curie–Weiss temperature, and a particular M∝ $\sqrt{H}$ curve is observed. The emergent ferromagnetically interacting spins amount to about 1/6 of the full spin moment of localized charges. Taking account of the possible inhomogeneous quasi-charge-order that forms a dipole-liquid, we construct a model of antiferromagnetically interacting spin chains in two adjacent charge-ordered domains, which are coupled via fluctuating charges on a Mott-dimer at the boundary. We find that the charge fluctuations can draw a weak ferromagnetic moment out of the spin singlet domains.

Characterizing Hidden Structures at NSLS-II: Strongly Correlated Electron Systems, Functional Ceramics, Batteries, and Beyond

Brookhaven National Laboratory (New York) launched its highenergy X-ray science program at the inception of the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility. Built in the 1980s, the NSLS X17 beamline was the world’s first super-conducting wiggler facility and remained in service for more than 30 years. The NSLS facility was decommissioned in October 2014 and a third-generation synchrotron machine, DOE’s National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), took over. Six years after completing construction, NSLS-II has a portfolio of 29 beamlines that includes two operating high-energy powder diffraction beamlines (XPD and PDF) and one high-energy imaging and diffraction beamline under construction (HEX).

Entropy of Strongly Correlated Electrons in a Partially Filled Landau Level

We use high-resolution chemical potential measurements to extract the entropy of monolayer and bilayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime via the Maxwell relation [(𝑑⁢𝜇)/(𝑑⁢𝑇)]| 𝑁 =−[(𝑑⁢𝑆)/(𝑑⁢𝑁)]| 𝑇 . Measuring the entropy from 𝑇 = 300 K down to 𝑇 = 200 mK, we identify the sequential emergence of quantum Hall ferromagnetism, fractional quantum Hall states, and various charge orders by comparing the measured entropy in different temperature regimes with theoretical models. At the lowest temperature of 𝑇 ≈ 200 mK we perform a detailed study of the entropy near even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in bilayer graphene, and comment on the possible topological origin of the observed excess entropy.

Flat bands and ferrimagnetic order in electronically correlated dice-lattice ribbons

In this work, we study ribbons of the dice two-dimensional lattice (that we call “dice ladders”) known to have nontrivial topological properties, such as Chern numbers 2. Our main results are two fold. (1) Analyzing the tight-binding model in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and an external magnetic field, we observed that dice ladders qualitatively display properties similar to their two-dimensional counterpart all the way to the limit of only two legs in the short direction. This includes flat bands near the Fermi level, edge currents and edge charge localization near zero energy when open boundary conditions are used, two chiral edge modes, and a nonzero Hall conductance. (2) We studied the effect of Hubbard correlation U in the two-leg dice ladder using Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group techniques. We show that by increasing U the flat bands split without the need of introducing external fields. Moreover, robust ferrimagnetic order develops. Overall, our work establishes dice ladders as a promising playground to study the combined effect of topology and correlation effects, one of the frontiers in quantum materials.

Excitons and trions in monolayer semiconductors with correlated electrons

We revisit low-temperature optical spectra of transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers and point to a possible crystallization of electrons (or holes) at low to moderate charge densities. To calculate the excitonic spectra under such conditions, we introduce the recursion method and compute how the charge density affects the energies, linewidths, and oscillator strengths of exciton and trion complexes. Equally important, we study how excitons and trions in the monolayer evolve when the charge particles gradually transition to a periodic Wigner lattice. The results provide valuable information on the ability to detect whether the particles are ordered through the exciton spectrum. Finally, we calculate the change in exciton energy in cases where the added charge particles have similar and dissimilar quantum numbers (spin and valley) to those of the electron or hole in the exciton. Here, the results of this work shed new light on the important optical properties of monolayer semiconductors.

Random fields from quenched disorder in an archetype for correlated electrons: The parallel spin stripe phase of La 1.6 – x Nd 0.4 Sr x CuO 4 at the 1/8 anomaly

The parallel stripe phase is remarkable both in its own right, and in relation to the other phases with which it coexists. Its inhomogeneous nature makes such states susceptible to random fields from quenched magnetic vacancies. Here we argue this is the case by introducing low concentrations of nonmagnetic Zn impurities (0%–10%) into La 1.6–x ⁢Nd 0.4⁢ Sr x ⁢CuO 4 (Nd-LSCO) with x=0.125 in single-crystal form, well below the percolation threshold of ~41% for a two-dimensional square lattice. Elastic neutron scattering measurements on these crystals show clear magnetic quasi-Bragg peaks at all Zn dopings. While all the Zn-doped crystals display order parameters that merge into each other and the background at ~68 K, the temperature dependence of the order parameter as a function of Zn concentration is drastically different. This result is consistent with meandering charge stripes within the parallel stripe phase, which are pinned in the presence of quenched magnetic vacancies. In turn it implies vacancies that preferentially occupy sites within the charge stripes, and hence that can be very effective at disrupting superconductivity in Nd-LSCO (x=0.125), and, by extension, in all systems exhibiting parallel stripes.
