Charm production and fragmentation fractions at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the production cross sections of prompt $D^{0}$, $D^{+}$, $D^{*+}$, $D^{+}_{s}$, $Λ^{+}_{c}$, and $Ξ^{+}_{c}$ charm hadrons at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector are presented. The D-meson cross sections as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) are provided with improved precision and granularity. The ratios of p T -diferential meson production cross sections based on this publication and on measurements at diferent rapidity and collision energy provide a constraint on gluon parton distribution functions at low values of Bjorken-x (10 —5 –10 —4 ). The measurements of $Λ^{+}_{c}$ ($Ξ^{+}_{c}$) baryon production extend the measured p T intervals down to p T = 0(3) GeV/c. These measurements are used to determine the charm-quark fragmentation fractions and the $c$$\overline{c}$ production cross section at midrapidity (|$y$| < 0.5) based on the sum of the cross sections of the weakly-decaying ground-state charm hadrons $D^{0}$, $D^{+}$, $D^{+}_{s}$, $Λ^{+}_{c}$, and $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ and, for the first time, $Ξ^{+}_{c}$, and of the strongly-decaying J/ψ mesons. The frst measurements of $Ξ^{+}_{c}$and $Σ^{0,++}_{c}$ fragmentation fractions at midrapidity are also reported. A signifcantly larger fraction of charm quarks hadronising to baryons is found compared to e + e — and ep collisions. The $c$$\overline{c}$ production cross section at midrapidity is found to be at the upper bound of state-of-the-art perturbative QCD calculations

Determination of the spin and parity of all-charm tetraquarks

The traditional quark model accounts for the existence of baryons, such as protons and neutrons, which consist of three quarks, as well as mesons, composed of a quark–antiquark pair. Only recently has substantial evidence started to accumulate for exotic states composed of four or five quarks and antiquarks. The exact nature of their internal structure remains uncertain. Here we report the first measurement of quantum numbers of the recently discovered family of three all-charm tetraquarks, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider from 2016 to 2018 . The angular analysis techniques developed for the discovery and characterization of the Higgs boson have been applied to the new exotic states. Here we show that the quantum numbers for parity P and charge conjugation C symmetries are found to be +1. The spin J of these exotic states is determined to be consistent with 2ħ, while 0ħ and 1ħ are excluded at 95% and 99% confidence levels, respectively. The J PC = 2 ++ assignment implies particular configurations of constituent spins and orbital angular momenta, which constrain the possible internal structure of these tetraquarks.

Open charm production and asymmetry in p Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle {\textrm{NN}}}}$ = 68.5 GeV

A measurement of D 0 meson production by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The production of D 0 mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on a gaseous neon target at rest, corresponding to a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The sum of the D 0 and $\overline{D}$ 0 production cross-section in pNe collisions in the centre-of-mass rapidity range y* ϵ [-2.29,0] is found to be $σ^{y* ϵ [-2.29,0]}_{D^0}$ = 48.2 ± 0.3 ± 4.5 μb/nucleon where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The D 0 and $\overline{D}$ 0 production asymmetry is also evaluated and suggests a trend towards negative values at large negative y*. The considered models do not account precisely for all the features observed in the LHCb data, but theoretical predictions including 1% intrinsic charm and 10% recombination contributions better describe the data than the other models considered.

Transverse-momentum and event-shape dependence of D-meson flow harmonics in Pb–Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV

The elliptic and triangular flow coefficients v 2 and v 3 of prompt D 0 , D + , and D * + mesons were measured at midrapidity ( | y | < 0.8 ) in Pb–Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decays in the transverse momentum interval 1 < p T < 36 GeV / c in central (0–10%) and semi-central (30–50%) collisions. Compared to pions, protons, and J / ψ mesons, the average D-meson v n harmonics are compatible within uncertainties with a mass hierarchy for p T ≲ 3 GeV / c , and are similar to those of charged pions for higher p T . The coupling of the charm quark to the light quarks in the underlying medium is further investigated with the application of the event-shape engineering (ESE) technique to the D-meson v 2 and p T -differential yields. The D-meson v 2 is correlated with average bulk elliptic flow in both central and semi-central collisions. Within the current precision, the ratios of per-event D-meson yields in the ESE-selected and unbiased samples are found to be compatible with unity. All the measurements are found to be reasonably well described by theoretical calculations including the effects of charm-quark transport and the recombination of charm quarks with light quarks in a hydrodynamically expanding medium.

Studies of charm quark diffusion inside jets using PbPb and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV

The first study of charm quark diffusion with respect to the jet axis in heavy ion collisions is presented. The measurement is performed using jets with $p^{jet}_T > 60 GeV / c$ and $D^0$ mesons with $p^D_T > 4 GeV / c$ in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV$, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The radial distribution of $D^0$ mesons with respect to the jet axis is sensitive to the production mechanisms of the meson, as well as to the energy loss and diffusion processes undergone by its parent parton inside the strongly interacting medium produced in Pb-Pb collisions. When compared to Monte Carlo event generators, the radial distribution in $pp$ collisions is found to be well described by pythia, while the slope of the distribution predicted by sherpa is steeper than that of the data. In Pb-Pb collisions, compared to the $pp$ results, the $D^0$ meson distribution for $4 < p^D_T < 20 GeV / c$ hints at a larger distance on average with respect to the jet axis, reflecting a diffusion of charm quarks in the medium created in heavy ion collisions. At higher $p^D_T$, the Pb-Pb and $pp$ radial distributions are found to be similar.

Exploring small-angle emissions in charm quark jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV

A measurement of the angular structure of inclusive jets and those containing a prompt D 0 meson in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV is presented. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 301 pb −1 were collected by the CMS experiment in 2017. Two jet grooming algorithms, late-k T and soft drop, are used to study the intrajet radiation pattern using iterative Cambridge-Aachen declustering. The splitting-angle distributions of jets with transverse momentum (p T ) of around 100 GeV, obtained with these two algorithms, show that there is a shift of the distribution for jets containing a prompt D 0 meson with respect to inclusive jets. The suppression of emissions at small angles observed in the late-k T grooming approach is consistent with the dead-cone effect, whereas the similar suppression for splittings selected with the soft-drop algorithm appears to be induced by gluon splitting to charm quark-antiquark pairs at large angles. The measured distributions are corrected to the particle level and can be used to constrain model predictions for the substructure of high-p T charm quark jets.

Charm contribution to ultrahigh-energy neutrinos from newborn magnetars

Newborn, strongly magnetized neutron stars (so-called magnetars) surrounded by their stellar or merger ejecta are expected to be sources of ultrahigh-energy neutrinos via decay of mesons produced in hadronic interactions of protons which are accelerated to ultrahigh energies by magnetic dissipation of the spindown energy. In this work, we show that not only pions and kaons but also charm hadrons, which are typically neglected due to their small production cross sections, can represent dominant contributions to neutrino fluence at ultrahigh energies, because of their short lifetimes, while the ultrahigh-energy neutrino fluence from pion and kaon production is suppressed at early times due to their significant cooling before their decay. We show that the next-generation detectors such as Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA), Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) and IceCube-Gen2 have a good chance of observing neutrinos, primarily originating from charm hadrons, from nearby magnetars. We also show that neutrinos from nearby magnetar-driven merger novae could be observed in the time interval between 10 2 s and 10 3 s, where the charm hadron contribution is dominant for neutrino energies above 10 8 GeV, of relevance to next generation detectors. We also comment on potential impacts of the charm hadron contribution to the diffuse neutrino flux.

Position-space renormalization schemes for four-quark operators in HQET

Abstract X-space schemes are gauge-invariant, regulator-independent renormalization schemes that are defined by requiring position-space correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators to be equal to their noninteracting values at particular kinematic points. These schemes can be used to nonperturbatively renormalize composite operators in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD), and by computing matching coefficients between theX-space scheme and$$ \overline{\textrm{MS}} $$ MS ¯ in the dimensionally-regulated continuum, matrix elements calculated with LQCD can be converted to$$ \overline{\textrm{MS}} $$ MS ¯ -renormalized matrix elements. UsingX-space schemes for Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) operators has the additional benefit that appropriate ratios of position-space correlation functions cancel the power-divergent static-quark self-energy of Lattice HQET nonperturbatively. This work presents theO(α S ) matching coefficients betweenX-space renormalized four-quark flavor-nonsinglet HQET operators relevant for the lifetimes of charm- and bottom-hadrons, and four-quark HQET operators relevant for mixing between neutral mesons containing a heavy quark, such asB−$$ \overline{B} $$ B ¯ mixing.

Measurement of elliptic flow of 𝐽/𝜓 in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV ⁢Au + Au collisions at forward rapidity

Here, we report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of 𝐽/𝜓 at forward rapidity (1.2 < |𝜂| < 2.2) in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5 nb −1 . The second Fourier coefficient (𝑣 2 ) of the azimuthal distribution of 𝐽/𝜓 is determined as a function of the transverse momentum (𝑝𝑇) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0%–50%, 10%–60%, and 10%–40%. We find that in all cases the values of 𝑣 2 ⁡(𝑝 𝑇 ), which quantify the elliptic flow of 𝐽/𝜓, are consistent with zero. Within uncertainties, the results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the 𝐽/𝜓 within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV.

Measurement of the production cross section of prompt $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $ baryons at midrapidity in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 5.02 TeV

The transverse momentum (p T ) differential cross section of the charm-strange baryon $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $ is measured at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) via its semileptonic decay into e + Ξ - ν e in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The ratio of the p T -differential $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $-baryon and D 0 -meson production cross sections is also reported. The measurements are compared with simulations with different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator, with predictions from a statistical hadronisation model (SHM) with a largely augmented set of charm-baryon states beyond the current lists of the Particle Data Group, and with models including hadronisation via quark coalescence. The p T -integrated cross section of prompt $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $-baryon production at midrapidity is also reported, which is used to calculate the baryon-to-meson ratio $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $/D 0 = 0.20 ± 0.04 (stat.)$^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$ (syst.). These results provide an additional indication of a modification of the charm fragmentation from e + e - and e - p collisions to pp collisions.

$B$-meson semileptonic decays with highly improved staggered quarks

We present an update of the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations project to compute the form factors for semileptonic $B_{(s)}$-meson decays. Our calculation uses the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for sea and valence quarks, and ensembles with up, down, strange, and charm quarks in the sea. Using a highly improved action with the MILC Collaboration's gauge ensembles with lattice spacings down to $a\approx0.03$ fm, allows the heavy valence quarks to be treated with the same discretization as the light and strange quarks. This unified treatment of the valence quarks allows for absolutely normalized vector currents, bypassing the need for perturbative matching, which has been a source of uncertainty in previous calculations of $B$-meson decay form factors by our collaboration. All preliminary form-factor results are blinded.

Simulating Charm Quarks in IP-Glasma Initial Stage and Quark-Gluon Plasma: A Hybrid Approach for charm quark phenomenology

We present phenomenological findings on charm quark transport while including its energy loss in both pre-equilibrium and hydrodynamic stages of the evolution. We employed the MARTINI event generator for the production and evolution of heavy quarks in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The sensitivity of the heavy meson nuclear modification factor and flow coeffcient to the early stage of heavy-ion collisions and bulk medium evolution is analyzed for Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV. Our study provides insights into the interaction strength of charm quarks during the early phase and within the quark-gluon plasma.

Charmonium Transport in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the LHC

We provide an update on our semi-classical transport approach for quarkonium production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, focusing on 𝐽/𝜓 and 𝜓(2𝑆) mesons in 5.02 TeV Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at both forward and mid-rapidity. In particular, we employ the most recent charm-production cross sections reported in pp collisions, which are pivotal for the magnitude of the regeneration contribution, and their modifications due to cold-nuclear-matter (CNM) effects. Multi-differential observables are calculated in terms of nuclear modification factors as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity, including the contributions from feeddown from bottom hadron decays. For our predictions for 𝜓(2𝑆) production, the mechanism of sequential regeneration relative to the more strongly bound 𝐽/𝜓 meson plays an important role in interpreting recent ALICE data.

Strong coupling constant and quark masses from lattice QCD

In this paper, we review lattice determinations of the charm- and bottom-quark masses and the strong coupling constant obtained by different methods. We explain how effective field theory approaches, such as Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD), potential Non-Relativistic QCD (pNRQCD), Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) and Heavy Meson rooted All- Staggered Chiral Perturbation Theory (HMrASχPT) can help in these determinations. After critically reviewing different lattice results we determine lattice world averages for the strong coupling constant, $α_s(M_Z, N_f=5) = 0.11803^{+0.00047}_{–0.00068}$, as well as for the charm-quark mass, $m_c(m_c, N_f=4) = 1.2735(35)$ GeV, and the bottom-quark mass, $m_b(m_b, N_f=5) = 4.188(10)$ GeV. The above

Exotic hidden-heavy hadrons and where to find them

The Born-Oppenheimer potentials for QCD with light quarks include adjoint-hadron potentials that are repulsive at short distances and heavy-hadron-pair potentials that approach thresholds at large distances. The adjoint-hadron potentials must connect smoothly to the heavy-hadron-pair potentials at intermediate distances. We identify exotic hidden-heavy hadrons as bound states and resonances in adjoint-hadron potentials that cross below a heavy-hadron-pair threshold before approaching it. This explains why many exotic hidden-charm and hidden-bottom hadrons have energies near heavy-hadron-pair thresholds. The remarkable properties of some exotic hidden-heavy mesons can be explained by fine tunings of adjoint-meson energies in QCD.

Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark $\mathrm{T}$ $^+_{cc}$

Quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force, describes interactions of coloured quarks and gluons and the formation of hadronic matter. Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. Particles with an alternative quark content are known as exotic states. Here a study is reported of an exotic narrow state in the D 0 D 0 π + mass spectrum just below the D *+ D 0 mass threshold produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar T$^{+}_{cc}$ tetraquark with a quark content of cc$\bar{u}\bar{d}$ and spin-parity quantum numbers J P = 1 + . Study of the DD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D *+ mesons is consistent with the observed D 0 π+ mass distribution. To analyse the mass of the resonance and its coupling to the D*D system, a dedicated model is developed under the assumption of an isoscalar axial-vector T$^{+}_{cc}$ state decaying to the D*D channel. Using this model, resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are determined to reveal important information about the nature of the T$^{+}_{cc}$ state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet axes difference in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

Heavy-flavor quarks produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the evolution of quark-initiated parton showers from initial hard scatterings to final-state hadrons. By examining jets that contain heavy-flavor hadrons, this study explores the effects of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD on jet formation and structure. The angular differences between various jet axes, Δ⁢𝑅 axis , offer insight into the radiation patterns and fragmentation of charm quarks. The first measurement of 𝐷 0 -tagged jet axes differences in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented for jets with transverse momentum 𝑝$^{ch jet}_{T}$ ≥ 10 GeV/𝑐 and 𝐷 0 mesons with 𝑝$^{D^0}_{T}$ ≥ 5 GeV/𝑐. In this 𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet measurement, three jet axis definitions, each with different sensitivities to soft, wide-angle radiation, are used: the standard axis, soft drop groomed axis, and winner-takes-all axis. Measurements of the radial distributions of 𝐷 0 mesons with respect to the jet axes, Δ⁢𝑅 axis−D 0 , are reported, along with the angle, Δ⁢𝑅 axis , between the three jet axes. The 𝐷 0 meson emerges as the leading particle in these jets, closely aligning with the winner-takes-all axis and diverging from the standard jet axis. The results also examine how varying the sensitivity to soft radiation with grooming influences the orientation of the soft drop jet axis and uncover that charm-jet structure is more likely to survive grooming when the soft drop axis is further from the 𝐷 0 direction, providing further evidence of the dead-cone effect recently measured by ALICE.

Hidden-strangeness tetraquarks in the dynamical diquark model

The dynamical diquark model describes multiquark exotic hadrons in terms of diquark components nucleated by heavy quarks and successfully explains multiple features of hidden-charm and hidden-bottom exotics. Here, we apply the model to the marginally heavy case of hidden-strange states to probe whether mesons near 2 GeV with peculiar properties, such as 𝜙⁡(2170), 𝑓 2 ⁡(2340), and 𝑋⁡(2370), are possible tetraquark candidates. We calculate spin-multiplet average masses using potentials obtained through lattice simulations and quark models, and we also describe the detailed spectra of the expected multiplets as a diagnostic to discern the nature of future hadrons likely to be discovered in this mass region by experiments at facilities such as BESIII, JLab, and the EIC.
