The evolution of symbiotic innovation, water, and agricultural supply chains

Abstract The water literature has mainly investigated the diversion and distribution of water from the source to the end users or the utilization of water at the farm level in crop production. This paper presents a supply chain perspective that links the innovation supply chain of water delivery and irrigation with the complete water supply chain to the crop and the crop supply chains. These supply chains are symbiotic. Changes in the demand for crops, agronomic technology, and knowledge about water will modify the water infrastructure, irrigation technology, land‐use and crop production patterns, and the pricing of water and related commodities. The parameters that guide investment in water innovation and the design of the water supply chain depend on political, economic, and technological considerations that have coevolved over time with water and crop systems. Evidence from California and elsewhere supports the findings of the paper.

Is a Malleable Active Site Loop the Key to High Substrate Promiscuity? Hybrid, Biocatalytic Route to Structurally Diverse Taxoid Side Chains with Remarkable Dual Stereocontrol

Abstract These studies reveal the first structure ofClostridium acetobutylicumalcohol dehydrogenase (CaADH), a protein exhibiting remarkable substrate promiscuity and stereochemical fidelity. The CaADH enzyme is utilized here for synthesizing 20 potential aryl isoserine side chains for the Taxotere family of tubulin‐binding chemotherapeutics. The approach involves dynamic reductive kinetic resolution (DYRKR) upon the corresponding α‐chloro‐β‐keto esters, showing high D‐synstereoselectivity, including those leading to the clinically relevant milataxel (Ar = 2‐furyl) and simotaxel (Ar = 2‐thienyl) side chains. Furthermore, various cross‐coupling chemistries performed on thep‐bromophenyl isoserine side chain significantly enhance the structural diversity of the taxoid side chain library obtained (16 additional taxoid side chains). The CaADH structure is notable: (i) the nicotinamide cofactor is bound in ananti‐conformation, with the amide carbonyl occupying the ketone binding pocket, and (ii) a flexible loop near the active site likely contributes to the remarkable substrate promiscuity observed in CaADH. We present our perspective on the dynamic nature of the CaADH active site through molecular dynamics simulation, proposing a halogen bonding model as a potential mechanism for the remarkable selectivity for an (S)‐configured C─Cl bond, in addition to the D‐facial selectivity, demonstrated across 20 diverse substrates by this remarkable short‐chain dehydrogenase enzyme.

Effect of Microstructure on Chain Flexibility and Glass Transition Temperature of Polybenzofulvene

Polybenzofulvene (PBF) is a polydiene with a very high glass transition temperature (T g ), which makes it a potential candidate for use as the hard block for high-temperature thermoplastic elastomer applications. The T g s of polydienes are known to be related to chain flexibility. However, no studies have been reported that correlate the chain flexibility to the microstructure of PBF. Herein, we present a study of solution properties of linear PBFs with narrow molecular weight dispersity and having 1,2-addition ranging from 23% to 99%. The materials were prepared by living anionic polymerization under different conditions. Specifically, the chain flexibility as defined by the Flory's characteristic ratio, , and dependence of chain flexibility on microstructure by combined measurements of intrinsic viscosity and molecular weight using triple-detector size exclusion chromatography (SEC) is studied. The persistence lengths (l p ) and chain diameters (d B ) were also estimated using the touched-bead wormlike chain model. To the best of our knowledge, the characteristic ratio of PBF is found to be the highest of all polydienes that have been reported so far.

Inducing Ferrimagnetic Exchange in 1D-FeSe 2 Chains Using Heteroleptic Amine Complexes: [Fe(en)(tren)][FeSe 2 ] 2

[Fe(en)(tren)][FeSe 2 ] 2 (en = ethylenediamine, C 2 H 8 N 2 , tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, C 6 H 18 N 4 ) has been synthesized by a mixed-ligand solvothermal method. Its crystal structure contains heteroleptic [Fe(en)(tren)] 2+ complexes with distorted octahedral coordination, incorporated between 1D-FeSe 2 chains composed of edge–sharing FeSe 4 tetrahedra. The twisted octahedral coordination environment of the Fe–amine complex leads to partial dimerization of Fe–Fe distances in the FeSe 2 chains so that the FeSe 4 polyhedra deviate strongly from the regular tetrahedral geometry. 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy reveals oxidation states of +3 for the Fe chain atoms and +2 for the Fe complex atoms. The close proximity of Fe atoms in the chains promotes ferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions, as indicated by a positive Weiss constant, θ = +53.8(6) K, derived from the Curie–Weiss fitting. Magnetometry and heat capacity reveal two consecutive magnetic transitions below 10 K. DFT calculations suggest that the ordering observed at 4 K is due to antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions in the 1D-FeSe 2 chains. The combination of two different ligands creates an asymmetric coordination environment that induces changes in the structure of the Fe–Se fragments. Finally, this synthetic strategy opens new ways to explore the effects of ligand field strength on the structure of both Fe-amine complexes and surrounding Fe–Se chains.

Unveiling the Finite Temperature Physics of Hydrogen Chains via Auxiliary Field Quantum Monte Carlo

The ability to accurately predict the finite temperature properties and phase diagrams of realistic quantum solids is central to uncovering new phases and engineering materials with novel properties ripe for device applications. Nonetheless, there remain comparatively few many-body techniques capable of elucidating the finite temperature physics of solids from first principles. Here, we take a significant step toward developing such a technique by generalizing our previous, exact fully ab initio finite temperature Auxiliary Field Quantum Monte Carlo (FT-AFQMC) method to model periodic solids and employing it to uncover the finite temperature physics of periodic hydrogen chains. Our chains’ unit cells consist of 10 hydrogen atoms modeled in a minimal basis, and we sample 5 k-points from the first Brillouin zone to arrive at a supercell consisting of 50 orbitals and 50 electrons. Based upon our calculations of these chains’ many-body energies, free energies, entropies, heat capacities, double and natural occupancies, and charge and spin correlation functions, we outline their metal–insulator and magnetic ordering as a function of both H–H bond distance and temperature. At low temperatures approaching the ground state, we observe both metal–insulator and ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic crossovers at bond lengths between 0.5 and 0.75 Å. We then demonstrate how this low-temperature ordering evolves into a metallic phase with decreasing magnetic order at higher temperatures. In order to contextualize our results, we compare the features we observe to those previously seen in one-dimensional, half-filled Hubbard models at finite temperature and in ground state hydrogen chains. Interestingly, we identify signatures of the Pomeranchuk effect in hydrogen chains for the first time and show that spin and charge excitations that typically arise at distinct temperatures in the Hubbard model are indistinguishably coupled in these systems. Beyond qualitatively revealing the many-body phase behavior of hydrogen chains in a numerically exact manner without invoking the phaseless approximation, our efforts shed light on the further theoretical developments that will be required to construct the phase diagrams of the more complex transition metal, lanthanide, and actinide solids of longstanding interest to physicists.

Concentration-Driven Slowdown of Chain-Exchange Kinetics in Block Copolymer Micelle Solutions

Here, we investigate the dependence of chain-exchange kinetics on polymer concentration for spherical micelles prepared from a polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene-alt-propylene) (SEP) diblock copolymer ( M n = 75 kDa, Ð = 1.05, and f PS = 0.18) in the PEP-selective solvent squalane. Solutions with concentrations of 15 vol% or more adopt a body-centered-cubic (BCC) packing of micelles, or a dense liquid-like packing (LLP), as confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering. Concurrently, the mean aggregation number of the micelles grows steadily from about 60 in dilute solution to nearly 200 by 50 vol%. Time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (TR-SANS) analysis reveals a monotonic and substantial (i.e., more than four orders of magnitude) decrease in the rate of chain exchange as the polymer concentration increases from 1 to 50 vol%. The TR-SANS relaxation functions are analyzed, taking into account both changes in contrast (due to chain exchange) and evolution in the structure factor (due to refinement of micelle packing). The activation energy for chain pullout is extracted using an established model and can be expressed as a linear function of polymer concentration, indicating that, in addition to the enthalpic barrier for extracting the core block, the evolution of micelle characteristics with increasing concentration imposes further constraints on chain exchange. Consistent with a theory of Halperin, these results suggest that the dominant factor reflects steric penalties during core block pullout arising from a reduced interfacial area per chain and associated increased corona crowding, due to the increase in aggregation number. The rate of exchange is independent of whether the micelles adopt a BCC or LLP arrangement, confirming that the rate-limiting step is extraction of the core block.

Anthraquinone Flow Battery Reactants with Nonhydrolyzable Water-Solubilizing Chains Introduced via a Generic Cross-Coupling Method

Water-soluble anthraquinones (AQs) hold great promise serving as redox-active species in aqueous organic flow batteries. Systematic investigations into how the properties of redox molecules depend on the water-solubilizing groups (WSGs) and the way in which they are bound to the redox core are, however, still lacking. We introduce WSGs linked to anthraquinone by C=C bonds via a cross-coupling reaction and convert C=C to C–C bonds through hydrogenation. The anthraquinone and the WSGs are connected via (un)branched chains with (un)saturated bonds. We investigate the influence of chains and ionic ending groups on the redox potentials of the molecules and identify three important trends: (1) The electron-withdrawing ending groups can affect the redox potentials of AQs with two unsaturated hydrocarbons on the chains through π-conjugation. (2) For chains with two (un)saturated straight hydrocarbons, WSGs increase the redox potentials of the AQs in the order PO 3 2– < CO 2 – < SO 3 – . (3) AQs with (un)saturated chains at high pH possess desirably low redox potentials, high solubilities, and high stability. Disproportionation leads to the formation of anthrone, which can be regenerated to anthraquinone. Tautomerization results in the saturation of alkene chains, stabilizing the structure. Here, we utilize these observations to identify a potentially low-cost and long-lifetime negative electrolyte that demonstrates a temporal fade rate as low as 0.0128%/day when paired with a potassium ferrocyanide positive electrolyte.

As–Se Pentagonal Linkers to Induce Chirality and Polarity in Mixed-Valent Fe–Se Tetrahedral Chains Resulting in Hidden Magnetic Ordering

A novel mixed-valent hybrid chiral and polar compound, Fe 7 As 3 Se 12 (en) 6 (H 2 O), has been synthesized by a single-step solvothermal method. The crystal structure consists of 1D [Fe 5 Se 9 ] chains connected via [As 3 Se 2 ]–Se pentagonal linkers and charge-balancing interstitial [Fe(en) 3 ] 2+ complexes (en = ethylenediamine). Neutron powder diffraction verified that interstitial water molecules participate in the crystal packing. Magnetic polarizability of the produced compound was confirmed by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy showed the presence of mixed-valent Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in the Fe–Se chains. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal strong antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions within the chains with no apparent magnetic ordering down to 2 K. Hidden short-range magnetic ordering below 70 K was found by 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, showing that a fraction of the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ in the chains are magnetically ordered. Nevertheless, complete magnetic ordering is not achieved even at 6 K. Analysis of XAS spectra demonstrates that the fraction of Fe 3+ in the chain increases with decreasing temperature. Computational analysis points out several competing ferrimagnetic ordered models within a single chain. Here, this competition, together with variation in the Fe oxidation state and additional weak intrachain interactions, is hypothesized to prevent long-range magnetic ordering.

Field tunable magnetic transitions of CsCo 2 (MoO 4 ) 2 (OH): a triangular chain structure with a frustrated geometry

The sawtooth chain compound CsCo 2 (MoO 4 ) 2 (OH) is a complex magnetic system and here, we present a comprehensive series of magnetic and neutron scattering measurements to determine its magnetic phase diagram. The magnetic properties of CsCo 2 (MoO 4 ) 2 (OH) exhibit a strong coupling to the crystal lattice and its magnetic ground state can be easily manipulated by applied magnetic fields. There are two unique Co 2+ ions, base and vertex, with J bb and J bv magnetic exchange. The magnetism is highly anisotropic with the b-axis (chain) along the easy axis and the material orders antiferromagnetically at T N = 5 K. There are two successive metamagnetic transitions, the first at H c 1 = 0.2 kOe into a ferrimagnetic structure, and the other at H c 2 = 20 kOe to a ferromagnetic phase. Heat capacity measurements in various fields support the metamagnetic phase transformations, and the magnetic entropy value is intermediate between S = 3/2 and 1/2 states. The zero field antiferromagnetic phase contains vertex magnetic vectors (Co(1)) aligned parallel to the b-axis, while the base vectors (Co(2)) are canted by 34° and aligned in an opposite direction to the vertex vectors. The spins in parallel adjacent chains align in opposite directions, creating an overall antiferromagnetic structure. Further, at a 3 kOe applied magnetic field, adjacent chains flip by 180° to generate a ferrimagnetic phase. An increase in field gradually induces the Co(1) moment to rotate along the b-axis and align in the same direction with Co(2) generating a ferromagnetic structure. The antiferromagnetic exchange parameters are calculated to be J bb = 0.028 meV and J bv = 0.13 meV, while the interchain exchange parameter is considerably weaker at J ch = (0.0047/N ch ) meV. Our results demonstrate that the CsCo 2 (MoO 4 ) 2 (OH) is a promising candidate to study new physics associated with sawtooth chain magnetism and it encourages further theoretical studies as well as the synthesis of other sawtooth chain structures with different magnetic ions.

Probing single-chain conformation and its impact on the optoelectronic properties of donor–accepter conjugated polymers

The chain conformation of donor–acceptor conjugated polymers (D–A CPs) is critical to their optical and electronic properties. However, probing the conformation of D–A CPs (e.g., persistence length and contour length) at a single-chain level is challenging due to the formation of aggregates in dilute solution, even in a good solvent. In this work, we studied the chain conformation and corresponding optical spectra for high-performance D–A CPs in the single-chain state by multimodal variable-temperature scattering and spectroscopy techniques, as well as by molecular dynamics simulations. Here we found a critical role of the side-chain length and branch point in the persistence length and optical absorption due to steric effects. Hence, it is important to consider both the chain rigidity and coplanarity of the polymer backbone to achieve desirable optoelectronic properties. Our findings bridge the fundamental knowledge gaps to design new CPs with desired optoelectronic properties via molecular engineering for next-generation electronic devices.

Side chain engineering in indacenodithiophene- co -benzothiadiazole and its impact on mixed ionic–electronic transport properties

Organic semiconductors are increasingly being decorated with hydrophilic solubilising chains to create materials that can function as mixed ionic–electronic conductors, which are promising candidates for interfacing biological systems with organic electronics. While numerous organic semiconductors, including p- and n-type materials, small molecules and polymers, have been successfully tailored to encompass mixed conduction properties, common to all these systems is that they have been semicrystalline materials. Here, we explore how side chain engineering in the nano-crystalline indacenodithiophene-co-benzothiadiazole (IDTBT) polymer can be used to instil ionic transport properties and how this in turn influences the electronic transport properties. This allows us to ultimately assess the mixed ionic–electronic transport properties of these new IDTBT polymers using the organic electrochemical transistor as the testing platform. Using a complementary experimental and computational approach, we find that polar IDTBT derivatives can be infiltrated by water and solvated ions, they can be electrochemically doped efficiently in aqueous electrolyte with fast doping kinetics, and upon aqueous swelling there is no deterioration of the close interchain contacts that are vital for efficient charge transport in the IDTBT system. Despite these promising attributes, mixed ionic–electronic charge transport properties are surprisingly poor in all the polar IDTBT derivatives. Albeit a “negative” result, this finding clearly contradicts established side chain engineering rules for mixed ionic–electronic conductors, which motivated our continued investigation of this system. We eventually find this anomalous behaviour to be caused by increasing energetic disorder in the polymers with increasing polar side chain content. We have investigated computationally how the polar side chain motifs contribute to this detrimental energetic inhomogeneity and ultimately use the learnings to propose new molecular design criteria for side chains that can facilitate ion transport without impeding electronic transport.

High-pressure behavior of a linear chain alkane, tricosane

Exploring the behavior of hydrocarbon under pressure is important for understanding its role in planetary sciences and also for exploring novel organic chemistry. In this study, we explored the high-pressure behavior of a linear-chain hydrocarbon, tricosane (C 23 H 48 ), using Raman spectroscopy. We compressed tricosane up to 23 GPa and did not find any evidence for pressure-induced amorphization within the conditions explored in this study. Upon compression, we observe new modes in the low energy region 100–300 cm -1 . In order to understand the appearance of these new modes at high pressures, we used complementary ab initio calculations and explored the effect of chain configurations (linear and bent) on the predicted Raman spectra. We find that these new modes observed at higher pressures are better explained by bent configuration of tricosane chains. Thus, based on high-pressure Raman spectra, it is very likely that a linear chain of tricosane is bent under pressure, i.e., it undergoes a pressure-induced trans-gauche transformation. Furthermore, it is likely that such bent regions (i.e., kinks) will act as sites along which large chain hydrocarbons could dissociate into smaller chain lengths at extreme conditions relevant to the interiors of Jovian planets.

Helical spin structure in iron chains with hybridized boundaries

In this paper, we have compared the magnetic properties of well-controlled ultra-short (≤50 nm) atomic iron (Fe) chains embedded in Fe-phthalocyanine films with those in Fe–hydrogen (H2) phthalocyanine superlattices. Surprisingly, we found that the coercivity of the atomic chains with free boundary conditions is independent of the chain length, whereas the one subject to hybridization of the chain ends exhibits an unexpected length dependence. These findings suggest that ferromagnetism in the free-boundary condition system is caused by an intrinsic indirect exchange. On the other hand, controlled boundary conditions produce a helical spin structure due to an extrinsic indirect exchange, which arises from the interaction between iron atoms at the ends of the chain and the hydrogen in the H 2 phthalocyanine spacer. As a consequence, during magnetic reversal, ultra-short iron chains subject to boundary clamping develop a helical spin structure, leading to increased coercivity. These findings suggest unique insights and ideas for the design of atomic-scale ultra-dense magnetic storage nanodevices.

Reversed dynamics of bottlebrush polymers with stiff backbone and flexible side chains

The segmental dynamics of bottlebrush polymers with a stiff backbone and flexible side chains has been studied. The segmental relaxation time of side chains attached to a flexible backbone follows the same trend as linear polymers, an increase with the increasing molecular weight, but is slowed down compared to their linear counterparts. Theoretical work predicts a reversal of the molecular weight dependence of the relaxation time for stiff backbones. As a model for a stiff-g-flexible system, bottlebrushes with poly(norbornene) backbone and poly(propylene oxide) side chains, PNB-g-PPO, at a uniform grafting density have been synthesized and characterized with quasi-elastic neutron scattering. Indeed, the anticipated reversed dynamics was found. Increasing the side chain length decreases the segmental relaxation time. This indicates the importance of the characteristics of the grafting site beyond a simplified picture of an attached side chain. The mean square displacement shows a similar trend with longer side chains exhibiting a larger displacement.

Influence of side-chain isomerization on the isothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(3-alkylthiophenes)

Flexible alkyl side chain in conjugate polymers (CPs) improves the solubility and promotes solution processability, in addition, it affects interchain packing and charge mobilities. Despite the well-known charge mobility and morphology correlation for these semi-crystalline polymers, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the impact of side chain on their crystallization kinetics. In the present work, isothermal crystallization of five poly(3-alkylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3ATs) with different side-chain structures were systematically investigated. To suppress the extremely fast crystallization and trap the sample into amorphous glass, an advanced fast scanning chip calorimetry technique, which is able to quench the sample with few to tens thousands of K/s, was applied. Results show that the crystallization of P3ATs was greatly inhibited after incorporation of branched side chains, as indicated by a dramatic up to six orders of magnitude decrease in the crystallization rate. The suppressed crystallization of P3ATs were correlated with an increased π–π stacking distance due to unfavorable side-chain steric interaction. This research provides a pathway to use side-chain engineering to control the crystallization behavior for CPs, thus to control device performance.

Electric Grid Supply Chain Review: Large Power Transformers and High Voltage Direct Current Systems

The report “America’s Strategy to Secure the Supply Chain for a Robust Clean Energy Transition” lays out the challenges and opportunities faced by the United States in the energy supply chain as well as the federal government plans to address these challenges and opportunities. It is accompanied by several issue-specific deep dive assessments, including this one, in response to Executive Order 14017 “America’s Supply Chains,” which directs the Secretary of Energy to submit a report on supply chains for the energy sector industrial base. The Executive Order is helping the federal government to build more secure and diverse U.S. supply chains, including energy supply chains. The need to modernize and increase the capacity of the U.S. power grid is increasing due to growing population, aging infrastructure, grid resilience requirements, operational flexibility needs, and a growing portfolio of renewable energy. As part of the Paris Climate Agreement the United States has committed to reducing its net greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels in 2030 and has set a goal of 100 percent carbon pollution free electricity by 2035 (The United States of America Nationally Determined Contribution, 2021). Meeting these targets will require a significant expansion of the power system to integrate a large amount of new renewable resources (United States Department of State & United States Executive Office of the President, 2021). However, many critical components supporting the power grid have limited to no domestic manufacturing capacity and face complex challenges in supporting a rapid expansion of the grid to meet multiple objectives, including decarbonization goals. This report focuses on two key grid components: large power transformers (LPTs) and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission.

Summary: Nuclear Energy Critical Material Waste Reduction and Supply Chain Solutions Enabled by Advanced Manufacturing

In September 2020, the U.S. government issued an executive order to address the threat to the domestic supply chain from its reliance on critical minerals (CMs) from foreign competitors and to support the domestic mining and processing industry. A national strategy on CMs with impact on the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) vision for 2021–2031 was developed. This vision embraces science and technology to re-establish U.S. competitiveness in the CM and material supply chains by (a) scientific innovation and technologies to ensure resilient and secure CMs and maintain a domestic material supply chain, (b) building a long-term minerals and materials innovation ecosystem to foster new capabilities to mitigate CM supply chain challenges, (c) increasing private sector adoption for sustaining the domestic CM supply chain, and (d) coordinating with international partners and federal agencies to diversify global supply chains and ensure the adoption of best practices for sustainable mining and processing (DOE 2021).

Helimagnetism in MnBi 2 Se 4 Driven by Spin-Frustrating Interactions Between Antiferromagnetic Chains

We report the magnetic properties and magnetic structure determination for a linear-chain antiferromagnet, MnBi 2 Se 4 . The crystal structure of this material contains chains of edge-sharing MnSe 6 octahedra separated by Bi atoms. The magnetic behavior is dominated by intrachain antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions, as demonstrated by the negative Weiss constant of –74 K obtained by the Curie–Weiss fit of the paramagnetic susceptibility measured along the easy-axis magnetization direction. The relative shift of adjacent chains by one-half of the chain period causes spin frustration due to interchain AFM coupling, which leads to AFM ordering at TN = 15 K. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that the AFM ordered state exhibits an incommensurate helimagnetic structure with the propagation vector k = (0, 0.356, 0). The Mn moments are arranged perpendicular to the chain propagation direction (the crystallographic b axis), and the turn angle around the helix is 128°. The magnetic properties of MnBi2Se4 are discussed in comparison to other linear-chain antiferromagnets based on ternary mixed-metal halides and chalcogenides.
