Dative Epitaxy of Commensurate Monocrystalline Covalent van der Waals Moiré Supercrystal

Realizing van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy in the 1980s represents a breakthrough that circumvents the stringent lattice matching and processing compatibility requirements in conventional covalent heteroepitaxy. However, due to the weak vdW interactions, there is little control over film qualities by the substrate. Typically, discrete domains with a spread of misorientation angles are formed, limiting the applicability of vdW epitaxy. In this study, the epitaxial growth of monocrystalline, covalent Cr 5 Te 8 2D crystals on monolayer vdW WSe 2 by chemical vapor deposition is reported, driven by interfacial dative bond formation. The lattice of Cr 5 Te 8 , with a lateral dimension of a few tens of micrometers, is fully commensurate with that of WSe 2 via 3 × 3 (Cr 5 Te 8 )/7 × 7 (WSe 2 ) supercell matching, forming a single-crystalline moiré superlattice. This work establishes a conceptually distinct paradigm of thin-film epitaxy, termed “dative epitaxy”, which takes full advantage of covalent epitaxy with chemical bonding for fixing the atomic registry and crystal orientation, while circumventing its stringent lattice matching and processing compatibility requirements; conversely, it ensures the full flexibility of vdW epitaxy, while avoiding its poor orientation control. Cr 5 Te 8 2D crystals grown by dative epitaxy exhibit square magnetic hysteresis, suggesting minimized interfacial defects that can serve as pinning sites.

Donor End-Capped Alkyl Chain Length Dependent Non-Radiative Energy Loss in All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells

A critical bottleneck for further efficiency breakthroughs in organic solar cells (OSCs) is to minimize the non-radiative energy loss (eΔV nr ) while maximizing the charge generation. With the development of highly emissive low-bandgap non-fullerene acceptors, the design of high-performance donors becomes critical to enable the blend with the electroluminescence quantum efficiency to approach or surpass the pristine acceptor. Herein, by shortening the end-capped alkyl chains of the small-molecular donors from hexyl (MPhS-C6) to ethyl (MPhS-C2), the material obtained aggregation that was insensitive to thermal annealing (TA) along with condensed packing simultaneously. The former leads to small phase separation and suppressed upshifts of the highest occupied molecular orbital energy level during TA, and the latter facilitates its efficient charge-transport at aggregation-less packing. Hence, the ΔV nr decreases from 0.242 to 0.182 V, from MPhS-C6 to MPhS-C2 based OSCs. An excellent PCE of 17.11% is obtained by 1,8-diiodoctane addition due to almost unchanged high J sc (26.6 mA cm –2 ) and V oc (0.888 V) with improved fill factor, which is the record efficiency with the smallest energy loss (0.497 eV) and ΔV nr (0.192 V) in all-small-molecule OSCs. Finally, these results emphasize the potential material design direction of obtaining concurrent TA-insensitive aggregation and condensed packing to maximize the device performances with a super low ΔV nr .

Precise Tailoring of Lithium-Ion Transport for Ultralong-Cycling Dendrite-Free All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries can address crucial challenges regarding insufficient battery cycling life and energy density. The demonstration of long-cycling dendrite-free all-solid-state lithium metal batteries requires precise tailoring of lithium-ion transport of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). Here, in this work, a proof of concept is reported for precise tailoring of lithium-ion transport of a halide SSE, Li 3 InCl 6 , including intragranular (within grains) but also intergranular (between grains) lithium-ion transport. Lithium-ion migration tailoring mechanism in crystals is developed by unexpected enhanced Li, In, and Cl vacancy populations and lower energy barrier for hopping. The lithium-ion transport tailoring mechanism between the grains is determined by the elimination of voids between grains and the formation of unexpected supersonic conducting grain boundaries, boosting the lithium dendrite suppression ability of SSE. Due to boosted lithium-ion conduction and dendrite-suppression ability, the all-solid-state lithium metal batteries coupled with Ni-rich LiNi 0.83 Co 0.12 Mn 0.05 O 2 cathodes and lithium metal anodes demonstrate breakthroughs in electrochemical performance by achieving extremely long cycling life at a high current density of 0.5 C (2000 cycles, 93.7% capacity retention). This concept of precise tailoring of lithium-ion transport provides a cost, time, and energy efficient solution to conquer the remaining challenges in all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries for fast developing electric vehicle markets.

Hole‐Carrier‐Dominant Transport in 2D Single‐Crystal Copper

Abstract In 2D noble metals like copper, the carrier scattering at grain boundaries has obscured the intrinsic nature of electronic transport. However, it is demonstrated that the intrinsic nature of transport by hole carriers in 2D copper can be revealed by growing thin films without grain boundaries. As even a slight deviation from the twin boundary is perceived as grain boundaries by electrons, it is only through the thorough elimination of grain boundaries that the hidden hole‐like attribute of 2D single‐crystal copper can be unmasked. Two types of Fermi surfaces, a large hexagonal Fermi surface centered at the zone center and the triangular Fermi surface around the zone corner, tightly matching to the calculated Fermi surface topology, confirmed by angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and vivid nonlinear Hall effects of the 2D single‐crystal copper account for the presence of hole carriers experimentally. This breakthrough suggests the potential to manipulate the majority carrier polarity in metals by means of grain boundary engineering in a 2D geometry.

Tailorable Multi–Modular Pore–Space–Partitioned Vanadium Metal–Organic Frameworks for Gas Separation

Currently, few porous vanadium metal-organic frameworks (V-MOFs) are known and even fewer are obtainable as single crystals, resulting in limited information on their structures and properties. Here this work demonstrates remarkable promise of V-MOFs by presenting an extensible family of V-MOFs with tailorable pore geometry and properties. The synthesis leverages inter-modular synergy on a tri-modular pore-partitioned platform. New V-MOFs show a broad range of structural features and sorption properties suitable for gas storage and separation applications for C 2 H 2 /CO 2 , C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 , and C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 . The c/a ratio of the hexagonal cell, a measure of pore shape, is tunable from 0.612 to 1.258. Other tunable properties include pore size from 5.0 to 10.9 Å and surface area from 820 to 2964 m 2 g –1 . With C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity from 3.3 to 11 and high uptake capacity for C 2 H 2 from 65.2 to 182 cm 3 g –1 (298K, 1 bar), an efficient separation is confirmed by breakthrough experiments. The near-record high uptake for C 2 H 6 (166.8 cm 3 g –1 ) contributes to the promise for C 2 H 6 -selective separation of C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 . The multi-module pore expansion enables transition from C 3 H 6 -selective to more desirable C 3 H 8 -selective separation with extraordinarily high C 3 H 8 uptake (254.9 cm 3 g –1 ) and high separation potential (1.25 mmol g –1 ) for C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 (50:50 v/v) mixture.

Near Room Temperature Solvothermal Growth of Ferroelectric CsPbBr 3 Nanoplatelets with Ultralow Dark Current

CsPbBr 3 exhibits outstanding optoelectronic properties and thermal stability, making it a coveted material for detectors, light-emitting diodes, and solar cells. Despite observations of ferroelectricity in CsPbBr 3 quantum dots, synthesizing bulk ferroelectric CsPbBr 3 crystals has remained elusive, hindering its potential in next-generation optoelectronic devices like optical switches and ferroelectric photovoltaics. Here, a breakthrough is reported: a novel solvothermal technique enabling the growth of ferroelectric CsPbBr 3 nanoplatelets with lateral dimensions in the tens of micrometers. This represents a significant step toward achieving large-area ferroelectric CsPbBr 3 crystals. Unlike traditional methods, this approach allows for growth and crystallization of CsPbBr 3 in alcohol solutions by enhancing precursor solubility. Further this study confirms the ferroelectric nature of these nanoplatelets using second harmonic generation, electrical characterizations, and piezoresponse force microscopy. This work paves the way for utilizing ferroelectric CsPbBr 3 in novel optoelectronic devices, significantly expanding the potential of this material and opening doors for further exploration in this exciting field.

Halide Perovskites: A Progress Report on Photon Interconversion

Photon interconversion generally describes processes which change the wavelength of the emitted light upon irradiation, with a gain in photon energy (upconversion), or a splitting of the incident photon energy to create multiple photons (downconversion). The focus of this progress report is placed on halide perovskite materials and their role in upconversion by triplet-triplet annihilation and downconversion via singlet fission in organic semiconductors, and a short perspective is given into quantum cutting and lanthanide-based upconversion applications. The current advances are highlighted regarding halide perovskites and perovskite-inspired materials with varying framework and material dimensionalities, as relating to photon interconversion processes. Here, the majority of the literature is based on 3D perovskites, which leaves room for growth for perovskite materials with varying dimensionalities. Gaps in the current field are emphasized, leading to a bright outlook on future possibilities of coupling perovskites to photon interconversion mechanisms, which can open the door for future breakthroughs in this field.

Binary Blend All‐Polymer Solar Cells with a Record Efficiency of 17.41% Enabled by Programmed Fluorination Both on Donor and Acceptor Blocks

Abstract Despite remarkable breakthrough made by virtue of “polymerized small‐molecule acceptor (PSMA)” strategy recently, the limited selection pool of high‐performance polymer acceptors and long‐standing challenge in morphology control impede their further developments. Herein, three PSMAs of PYDT‐2F, PYDT‐3F, and PYDT‐4F are developed by introducing different fluorine atoms on the end groups and/or bithiophene spacers to fine‐tune their optoelectronic properties for high‐performance PSMAs. The PSMAs exhibit narrow bandgap and energy levels that match well with PM6 donor. The fluorination promotes the crystallization of the polymer chain for enhanced electron mobility, which is further improved by following n ‐doping with benzyl viologen additive. Moreover, the miscibility is also improved by introducing more fluorine atoms, which promotes the intermixing with PM6 donor. Among them, PYDT‐3F exhibits well‐balanced high crystallinity and miscibility with PM6 donor; thus, the layer‐by‐layer processed PM6/PYDT‐3F film obtains an optimal nanofibril morphology with submicron length and ≈23 nm width of fibrils, facilitating the charge separation and transport. The resulting PM6/PYDT‐3F devices realizes a record high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.41% and fill factor of 77.01%, higher than the PM6/PYDT‐2F (PCE = 16.25%) and PM6/PYDT‐4F (PCE = 16.77%) devices.

Ultrafast Jahn‐Teller Photoswitching in Cobalt Single‐Ion Magnets

Abstract Single‐ion magnets (SIMs) constitute the ultimate size limit in the quest for miniaturizing magnetic materials. Several bottlenecks currently hindering breakthroughs in quantum information and communication technologies could be alleviated by new generations of SIMs displaying multifunctionality. Here, ultrafast optical absorption spectroscopy and X‐ray emission spectroscopy are employed to track the photoinduced spin‐state switching of the prototypical complex [Co(terpy) 2 ] 2+ (terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine) in solution phase. The combined measurements and their analysis supported by density functional theory (DFT), time‐dependent‐DFT (TD‐DFT) and multireference quantum chemistry calculations reveal that the complex undergoes a spin‐state transition from a tetragonally elongated doublet state to a tetragonally compressed quartet state on the femtosecond timescale, i.e., it sustains ultrafast Jahn‐Teller (JT) photoswitching between two different spin multiplicities. Adding new Co‐based complexes as possible contenders in the search for JT photoswitching SIMs will greatly widen the possibilities for implementing magnetic multifunctionality and eventually controlling ultrafast magnetization with optical photons.

Site Diversity and Mechanism of Metal–Exchanged Zeolite Catalyzed Non–Oxidative Propane Dehydrogenation

Metal-exchanged zeolites are well-known propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalysts; however, the structure of the active species remains unresolved. In this review, existing PDH catalysts are first surveyed, and then the current understanding of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts is described in detail. The case of Ga/H-ZSM-5 is employed to showcase that advances in the understanding of structure–activity relations are often accompanied by technological or conceptional breakthroughs. The understanding of Ga speciation at PDH conditions has evolved owing to the advent of in situ/operando characterizations and to the realization that the local coordination environment of Ga species afforded by the zeolite support has a decisive impact on the active site structure. In situ/operando quantitative characterization of catalysts, rigorous determination of intrinsic reaction rates, and predictive computational modeling are all significant in identifying the most active structure in these complex systems. The reaction mechanism could be both intricately related to and nearly independent of the details of the assumed active structure, as in the two main proposed PDH mechanisms on Ga/H-ZSM-5, that is, the carbenium mechanism and the alkyl mechanism. Perspectives on potential approaches to further elucidate the active structure of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts and reaction mechanisms are discussed in the final section.

Eliminating the Imbalanced Mobility Bottlenecks via Reshaping Internal Potential Distribution in Organic Photovoltaics

The imbalanced carrier mobility remains a bottleneck for performance breakthrough in even those organic solar cells (OSCs) with recorded power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Herein, a counter electrode doping strategy is proposed to reshape the internal potential distribution, which targets to extract the low mobility carriers at far end. Device simulations reveal that the key of this strategy is to partially dope the active layer with a certain depth, therefore it strengthens the electric field for low mobility carriers near counter electrode region while avoids zeroing the electric field near collection electrode region. Taking advantage of these, PCE enhancements are obtained from 15.4% to 16.2% and from 16.9% to 18.0%, respectively, via cathode p-doping and anode n-doping. Extending its application from opaque to semitransparent devices, the PCE of dilute cell rises from 10.5% to 12.1%, with a high light utilization efficiency (LUE) of 3.5%. The findings provide practical solutions to the core device physical problem in OSCs.

Overcoming the Damping–Elasticity Paradox via 3D‐Printed NiTiSn Nanocomposite

Abstract Developing high damping alloys (HDAs) with large elastic strain has attracted growing attention due to the increasing demand for energy absorption with overload reliability and reusability. However, damping capacity inherently conflicts with elasticity, because the former requires a liable movement of crystal defects while the latter opposite. To deal with the damping‐elasticity paradox, the advantage of pseudobinary eutectic reaction and rapid cooling of laser powder bed fusion is taken to fabricate a bulk NiTiSn nanocomposite with a two‐level hierarchical structure. The first‐level architecture is composed of martensitic NiTi nanolamellae and reinforced Ti 3 Sn nanolamellae. In addition to lattice strain matching and lamellar boundary strengthening, a novel mechanism of martensite reorientation mediated by reversible stress‐induced detwinning‐twinning is activated to generate large elastic strain. A high density of nanotwins and nanodomains within NiTi nanolamellae constitute the second‐level architecture, which provides pronounced internal friction for high damping capacity. As a result, our NiTiSn nanocomposite exhibits a record‐high integration of damping capacity (tanδ > 0.10) and elastic strain (exceeding 4.5%), as well as superb stability under cyclic overload. This research not only represents a major breakthrough in achieving HDAs with outstanding damping and elastic strain but also offers a novel paradigm for high‐performance functional and structural materials.

Efficient Organic Solar Cell with 16.88% Efficiency Enabled by Refined Acceptor Crystallization and Morphology with Improved Charge Transfer and Transport Properties

Abstract Single‐layered organic solar cells (OSCs) using nonfullerene acceptors have reached 16% efficiency. Such a breakthrough has inspired new sparks for the development of the next generation of OSC materials. In addition to the optimization of electronic structure, it is important to investigate the essential solid‐state structure that guides the high efficiency of bulk heterojunction blends, which provides insight in understanding how to pair an efficient donor–acceptor mixture and refine film morphology. In this study, a thorough analysis is executed to reveal morphology details, and the results demonstrate that Y6 can form a unique 2D packing with a polymer‐like conjugated backbone oriented normal to the substrate, controlled by the processing solvent and thermal annealing conditions. Such morphology provides improved carrier transport and ultrafast hole and electron transfer, leading to improved device performance, and the best optimized device shows a power conversion efficiency of 16.88% (16.4% certified). This work reveals the importance of film morphology and the mechanism by which it affects device performance. A full set of analytical methods and processing conditions are executed to achieve high efficiency solar cells from materials design to device optimization, which will be useful in future OSC technology development.

Vacuum-Healing of Grain Boundaries in Sodium-Doped CuInSe 2 Solar Cell Absorbers

Alkali metal doping and grain boundaries (GB) have been at the center of attention within the Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 photovoltaics community for years. This study provides the first experimental evidence that the GB of sodium-doped CuInSe 2 thin films may undertake reversible oxidation even at room temperature, whereas undoped films may not. The findings are corroborated by cathodoluminescence imaging, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and Kelvin probe force microscopy on air-exposed films subsequently subject to vacuum. A thermochemical assessment identifies the likely solid-gas equilibria involved. These reactions open new research questions with respect to the beneficial role played by alkali metal dopants in chalcopyrite solar cells and may steer the community toward new breakthroughs.

Regulation of Side‐Chain Symmetry for Delaying Triplet Formation and Suppressing Non‐Radiative Loss in Organic Solar Cells

Abstract The structural revolutions of non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have driven continuous efficiency breakthroughs in organic solar cells (OSCs). Rational regulation of NFA structures toward efficient exciton dissociation and mitigated non‐radiative recombination is pivotal for OSCs. The incorporation of asymmetric side chains on NFAs can often achieve these goals by inducing a desirable aggregate state. However, it lacks the studies to directly correlate the side‐chain symmetry of NFAs with the exciton delocalization and triplet dynamics in OSCs. Herein, The influence of structural symmetry on the aggregate properties is systematically investigated and exciton/charge dynamics based on two developed biaxial‐conjugated NFAs with varied side‐chain symmetry. The symmetric NFA having diverse molecular packing orientations can form multiple charge transfer channels in its blend with polymer donor, which cannot be found in that comprising the asymmetric ones. Moreover, a slower rate and lower ratio of the spin‐triplet state are formed in the blend of symmetric NFA, resulting in a much lower non‐radiative voltage loss in corresponding OSCs. This study reveals the distinct advantages of symmetric NFAs in both aggregate properties and exciton/charge dynamics over those of asymmetric ones, paving the way for developing high‐performance OSCs using easier‐to‐prepare, low‐cost symmetric materials.

Pyomo.DOE: An open-source package for model-based design of experiments in Python

Predictive mathematical models are a cornerstone of science and engineering. Yet selecting, calibrating, and validating said science-based models often remains an art in practice. Model-based design of experiments (MBDoE) provides a systematic framework to maximize information gain from experiments while minimizing time and resource costs. But MBDoE remains limited to niche application areas, in part because practitioners must integrate expertise in statistics, computational optimization, and modeling. To help reduce this barrier, we introduce Pyomo.DOE, an open-source package for MBDoE. Pyomo.DOE uses a nonlinear sensitivity analysis code k_aug to quickly approximate the Fisher information matrix and leverages a new stochastic programming abstraction. We demonstrate Pyomo.DOE with the first application of MBDoE to fixed-bed breakthrough experiments, which highlights the power of Pyomo.DOE to quantify the value of experimental modifications a priori for large-scale partial differential-algebraic equation (PDAE) models. Here we also provide a mathematical primer on MBDoE targeted at general chemical engineers.

Recent Advances in Machine Learning for Fiber Optic Sensor Applications

Over the last three decades, fiber optic sensors (FOS) have gained a lot of attention for their wide range of monitoring applications across many industries, including aerospace, defense, security, civil engineering, and energy. FOS technologies hold great promise to form the backbone for next‐generation intelligent sensing platforms that offer long‐distance, high‐accuracy, distributed measurement capabilities and multiparametric monitoring with resilience to harsh environmental conditions. The major limitations posed by FOS are 1) cross‐sensitivity, 2) enormous volume and large data generation, 3) low data processing speed, 4) degradation of signal‐to‐noise ratio over the fiber length, and 5) overall cost of sensor and interrogator systems. These challenges can be overcome by building advanced data analytics engines enabled by recent breakthroughs in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). This article presents a comprehensive review of recent studies that integrate ML and AI algorithms with FOS technologies. This review also highlights several FOS technology development directions that promise a significant impact on widespread use for several industrial applications, with an emphasis on energy systems monitoring. A perspective on future directions for further research development is also provided.

A Metal‐Organic Framework with Nonpolar Pore Surfaces for the One‐Step Acquisition of C 2 H 4 from a C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 Mixture

Abstract Because C 2 H 4 plays an essential role in the chemical industry, economical and energy‐efficient separation of ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) from ethane (C 2 H 6 ) is extremely important. With the exception of energy‐intensive cryogenic distillation, there are few one‐step methods to obtain polymer‐grade (≥99.95 % pure) C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 mixtures. Here we report a highly stable metal‐organic‐framework (MOF) FJI‐H11‐Me(des) (FJI‐H=Hong's group in Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter) which features one‐dimensional hexagonal nonpolar pore surfaces constructed by aromatic rings and alkyl groups. This FJI‐H11‐Me(des) adsorbs C 2 H 6 rather than C 2 H 4 between 273 and 303 K. Practical breakthrough experiments with C 2 H 4 containing 1 % C 2 H 6 have shown that FJI‐H11‐Me(des) can realize the acquisition in one‐step of polymer‐grade, 99.95 % pure C 2 H 4 under various conditions including different gas flow rates, temperatures and relative humidity.
