Synthesis and characterization of zeolite sorbents from coal fly ash by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method for removal of boron leachate from coal impoundments

This study developed promoted zeolite-based sorbents derived from coal fly ash to remove leachates (like boron) from ash impoundment or landfill to protect the environment and reuse legacy coal ash. The sorbents were synthesized using machine learning model results as guide to accelerate the sorbent development.

Optimization of boron carbide density using direct current sintering for use as sputtering sources at the National Ignition Facility

Several experimental trials were conducted to determine optimal sintering parameters and compositions for purchased boron carbide powder using spark plasma sintering/direct current sintering. Sputtering targets used to create ablators for the National Ignition Facility have been unable to survive post processing procedures suggesting that in-house fabrication may yield better results due to extended control.

Equation of state of boron carbide B 4 ⁢C

We present the results of recent experiments conducted on the Sandia Z machine and a new tabular equation of state for B 4 ⁢C. The equation of state was calibrated to a combination of density functional calculations reported here and fits to preexisting data. It was constructed partly to recover the effects of a shock-driven, polymorphic phase transition of unknown character beginning at particle velocities of just under 3 km/s (shock pressures of 95 GPa). Some of the Z experiments included sound speeds determined by the overtaking rarefaction method, from which we calculate the Grüneisen parameter and compare with previous experiments conducted at the OMEGA laser [Fratanduono et al ., Phys. Rev. B 94 , 184107 (2016)], our own first principles calculations, and another recent tabular equation of state [Zhang et al ., Phys. Rev. E 102 , 053203 (2020)]. We also compare our results with previous static compression, thermophysical, and melt studies, finding mixed consistency. We predict the onset and completion of shock melting at 225 and 265 GPa, respectively, and predict a melt curve that is largely flat to pressures of several hundred GPa.

Role of E × B Drift in Divertor Detachment Control via Boron Powder Injection on EAST

Here, the effects of B powder injection on plasma detachment about EAST discharge were studied by using SOLPS-ITER code package with the effects of E × B drifts considered. The simulation results show that plasma detachment occurs at the inner target in favourable toroidal magnetic field (B t ) direction at a relatively low B powder flow rate, one order of magnitude lower than that at the outer target. In a similar scenario with unfavourable B t , it is found that the detachment thresholds of B flow rate for both the inner and outer targets are close and of the same order as that for the outer target with favourable Bt. In favourable B t direction at B powder flow rate of 1.2 × 10 21 atoms/s, a localized, broadened high-density region is formed near the inner target benefitted by the injection location and the E × B drift, and a radiation-intensified zone, mostly contributed by B 1+ and B 2+ , occurs there. The E × B drift facilitates plasma detachment at the inner target and simultaneously amplifies the in–out divertor asymmetry. In addition, the simulation results with three different injection locations show that the injection from outer strike point leads to the lowest Z eff inside the separatrix and has an intermediate flow rate for detachment at the outer target, comparing with the X-point and upstream locations.
