Feasibility study of a bidirectional jet flap device for application to helicopter rotor blades. Phase 2: Lift controller development

A bidirectional jet flap device called the variable deflection thruster (VDT) has been investigated for possible application to helicopter rotors. This investigation included the development and testing of a fluidic lift control system for the VDT-blade model making use of the test result that VDT-blade lift can be sensed from the differential pressure at midchord. This study constitutes a long-range program to develop blown control techniques for stabilizing the higher harmonic modes of helicopter rotors. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using a three-sectioned, two-dimensional VDT-blade model having individually controlled VDT jet flaps in each section. Steady-state tests were conducted without the fluidic lift controller (open loop) for both full-span blowing and for the model center section blowing only. Steady-state tests were conducted with the center section blowing only using the fluidic lift controller (close-loop) to control the lift on the model center section. Dynamic tests were conducted using the complete model with the VDT jet in the model center section oscillating at various frequencies and also using the model center section alone on a single endplate to obtain finite-aspect-ratio effects. Fair agreement was obtained between theory and experimental results.

Bidirectional reflectance of the moonlit earth.

Use of OGO-4 airglow photometer data and computed lunar spectral irradiances at the subsatellite point to examine the highest radiance over clouds and lowest radiance over open ocean near 3914, 5577, 5893, 6225, and 6300 A in terms of bidirectional reflectance. The results are compared to and are consistent with mathematical models of the atmosphere developed by Plass and Kattawar (1968, 1970) and with daytime measurements from OSO-3 by Neel et al. (1969).

Bidirectional fluid-flow monitor

Bidirectional fluid-flow monitor detects flow rates as low as 0.1 gal/min (0.41/min) and operates at temperatures up to 350 F (177 C) and at pressures to 500 psig (3.6 X 10 to the sixth power N/M squared). Monitor shows "no flow" or "maximum flow" conditions and approximately indicates immediate flow rates.

Physiochemical, site, and bidirectional reflectance factor characteristics of uniformly moist soils

The author has identified the following significant results. The bidirectional reflectance factor (0.5 micron to 2.3 micron wavelength interval) and physiochemical properties of over 500 soils from 39 states, Brazil and Spain were measured. Site characteristics of soil temperature regime and moisture zone were used as selection criteria. Parent material and internal drainage were noted for each soil. At least five general types of soil reflectance curves were identified based primarily on the presence or absence of ferric iron absorption bands, organic matter content, and soil drainage characteristics. Reflectance in 10 bands across the spectrum was found to be negatively correlated with the natural log of organic matter content.

Bidirectional reflectance distribution function /BRDF/ measurements of stray light suppression coatings for the Space Telescope /ST/

The paper considers the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of black coatings used on stray light suppression systems for the Space Telescope (ST). The ST stray light suppression requirement is to reduce earth, moon, and sun light in the focal plane to a level equivalent to one 23 Mv star per square arcsecond, an attenuation of 14 orders of magnitude. It is impractical to verify the performance of a proposed baffle system design by full scale tests because of the large size of the ST, so that a computer analysis is used to select the design. Accurate computer analysis requires a knowledge of the diffuse scatter at all angles from the surface of the coatings, for all angles of incident light. During the early phases of the ST program a BRDF scanner was built at the Marshall Space Flight Center to study the scatter from black materials; the measurement system is described and the results of measurements on samples proposed for use on the ST are presented.

Bidirectional reflectance spectroscopy. I - Theory

An approximate analytic solution is derived for the radiative transfer equation describing particulate surface light scattering, taking into account multiple scattering and mutual shadowing. Analytical expressions for the following quantities are found: bidirectional reflectance, radiance coefficient and factor, the normal, Bond, hemispherical, and physical albedos, integral phase function and phase integral, and limb-darkening profile. Scattering functions for mixtures can be calculated, as well as corrections for comparisons of experimental transmission or reflection spectra with observational planetary spectra. The theory should be useful for the interpretation of reflectance spectroscopy of laboratory surfaces and the photometry of solar system objects.

Bidirectional reflectance spectroscopy. II - Experiments and observations

Aspects of the theoretical bidirectional reflectance expression derived by Hapke (1981) are studied experimentally, and it is shown that the expression describes satisfactorily the measured angular scattering and spectral properties of a cobalt glass powder in which the two properties vary greatly with wavelength. The theoretical reflectance function also describes measured distributions of intensity across the surfaces of planets, except near the sunlit limb, where the macroscopic roughness influences the brightness.

Far-infrared /FIR/ optical black bidirectional reflectance distribution function /BRDF/

A nonspecular reflectometer and its operation at far-infrared wavelengths are described. Large differences in nonspecular reflectance were found to exist between different optically black coatings. Normal incidence bidirectional reflectance distribution function /BRDF) measurements at wavelengths between 12 and 316 microns of three black coatings show that their mean BRDFs increase with wavelength. The specularity of two of these coatings also showed a strong wavelength dependence, while the specularity of one coating seemed independent of wavelength. The BRDF of one coating depended on the angle of incidence at 12 and 38 microns, but not at 316 microns. Beyond 200 microns, it was found necessary to correct the measurements for the beam spread of the instrument.

The bidirectional particle event of October 12, 1977, possibly associated with a magnetic loop

Charged particle angular distribution features suggesting the presence of a closed magnetic loop have been observed as a result of a fortuitous set of interplanetary and solar events, on October 12, 1977, by the IMP 7 and 8 spacecraft. The magnetic topology of the loop, which must have extended beyond the orbit of the earth and been connected to particle sources and/or mirrors at both ends, is similar to that suggested by Gold (1960). The occurrence of a trapping-type electron distribution peaked at 90 deg to the magnetic field, while ions are strongly field-aligned and bidirectional, are the salient anisotropy features implying the presence of a loop.

Bidirectional reflectance distribution function of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite solar-shield material

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) telescope has an outer shield on it which is used to reduce the amount of thermal radiation that enters the telescope. The shield forms the first part of the baffle structure which reduces the photon incidence on the focal plane. It was, therefore, necessary to model this structure for scattering, and a required input for such modeling is the scattering characteristic of this surface. Attention is given to the measurement of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), the reflected radiance divided by the incident irradiance at 10.6 micrometers, 118 micrometers, and at several angles of incidence. Visual observation of the gold sample shows that there are striations which line up in a single direction. The data were, therefore, taken with the sample oriented in each of two directions.

All-purpose bidirectional four-quadrant controller

The basic purpose of this paper is to provide some information regarding bidirectional four quadrant resonant power conversion and describe possible applications to aircraft electrical systems. As this technology has been developed sufficiently to demonstrate its feasibility, this is an appropriate time to evaluate the benefits of its application to aircraft electrical systems.

Effect of heliotropism on the bidirectional reflectance of irrigated cotton

The dynamic behavior of cotton leaves is described using gyroscopic coordinates. Angular movements represented as pitching, rolling, and yawing are used to follow the movement of leaf normals and their instantaneous relationships to the sun on an individual basis. A sensitivity analysis establishes that the angle between a leaf normal and the sun is most affected by changes in pitch and roll. Plots of the phase angle gamma averaged by quadrant show the pronounced heliotropic behavior of cotton leaves. Plots of pitch versus roll averaged by quadrant demonstrate the differential behavior of cotton leaves relative to the position of the sun. These results are used to interpret sections taken from bidirectional reflectance curves obtained using 0.57-0.69 micron band in terms of the evolution of gamma from sunrise until noon. The measured and experimental values of gamma are in reasonable agreement. Forescattered and backscattered exitances are observed to have distinct leaf normal directions.
