AlInP-passivated III–V solar cells grown by dynamic hydride vapor-phase epitaxy

We report the development of AlInP-passivated solar cells grown by dynamic hydride vapor-phase epitaxy (D-HVPE) with AM1.5G efficiencies of 26.0% for single-junction (1J) GaAs cells and 28.0% for GaInP/GaAs (2J) tandems. We compare the device performance of solar cells passivated with AlInP versus control cells passivated with GaInP, which has already enabled near-unity carrier collection in GaAs solar cells. 1J devices passivated with either AlInP or GaInP have an identical open-circuit voltage (V OC ) of 1.06 V and long-wavelength current collection near 95%, indicating that both window materials provide a similar degree of passivation. Adding AlInP passivation to each solar cell structure improves the current collection by 1.3 and 1 mA/cm 2 for the 1J and 2J, respectively. The AlInP also results in a top cell V OC boost of ~40 mV relative to a tandem device passivated only by a thin, highly doped GaInP emitter. Secondary-ion mass spectrometry measurements indicate that although O and Si both incorporate in the AlInP window, they do not appear in the subsequently grown absorber layers and do not impact its ability to passivate the front surface. We expect that these achievements, along with continued optimization, will enable parity of hydride vapor-phase epitaxy (HVPE)-grown device efficiencies with state-of-the-art devices grown by other epitaxial methods in the near future.

Nonlinear Logistic Regression Mixture Experiment Modeling for Binary Data Using Dimensionally Reduced Components

This article presents and illustrates an approach using nonlinear logistic regression for modeling binary response data from a mixture experiment when the components can be partitioned into groups used to form dimensionally-reduced pseudocomponents (DRPs). A DRP is a linear combination of the components in a group, where the linear combinations over all groups are normalized so that the DRP proportions sum to unity. Nonlinear logistic regression is required because, after normalization of the linear combinations, the model expressed in terms of the DRPs is nonlinear in the parameters that specify the linear combinations. A method for obtaining nonparametric tolerance limits on the probability of a “success” for the binary response variable using a bootstrap approach is also presented. Having three DRPs enables viewing data and modeling results on a ternary plot even though there may be many more than three mixture components. A real database, involving whether or not nepheline crystals form in simulated nuclear waste glass after cooling, is used to illustrate the nonlinear logistic regression modeling and nonparametric tolerance limit approaches when there are three DRPs.

From Inside Out: How the Buried Interface, Shell Defects, and Surface Chemistry Conspire to Determine Optical Performance in Nonblinking Giant Quantum Dots

“Giant” or core/thick‐shell quantum dots (gQDs) are an important class of solid‐state quantum emitter characterized by strongly suppressed blinking and photobleaching under ambient conditions, and reduced nonradiative Auger processes. Together, these qualities provide distinguishing and useful functionality as single‐ and ensemble‐photon sources. For many applications, operation at elevated temperatures and under intense photon flux is desired, but performance is strongly dependent on the synthetic method employed for thick‐shell growth. Here, a comprehensive analysis of gQD structural properties “from the inside out” as a function of shell‐growth method is reported: successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) and high‐temperature continuous injection (HT‐CI), or sequential combinations of the two. Key correlations across synthesis methods, structural features (interfacial alloying, stacking‐fault density and surface‐ligand identity), and performance metrics (quantum yield, single‐gQD photoluminescence under thermal/photo stress, charging behavior and quantum‐optical properties) are identified. Surprisingly, it is found that interfacial alloying is the strongest indicator of gQD stability under stress, but this parameter is not the determining factor for Auger suppression. Furthermore, quantum yield is strongly influenced by surface chemistry and can approach unity even in the case of high shell‐defect density, while introduction of zinc‐blende stacking faults increases the likelihood that a gQD exhibits charged‐state emission.

D Meson Sensitivity to a System Size Scan at LHC

Experimental measurements in pA collisions indicate no D meson suppression (R pPb ~ 1) but a surprisingly large v 2 . To better understand these results we propose a system size scan at the LHC involving 16 OO, 40 ArAr, 129 XeXe and 208 PbPb collisions. Using Trento+ v-USPhydro+DAB-MOD to make predictions, we find that the R AA tends towards unity when the system size is decreased, but nonetheless, in the most central collisions v 2 {2} is almost independent of the colliding system. Furthermore, these results are analyzed in light of path length and initial eccentricity variations.

Search for heavy Majorana neutrinos in same-sign dilepton channels in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A search is performed for a heavy Majorana neutrino (N), produced in leptonic decay of a W boson propagator and decaying into a W boson and a lepton, with the CMS detector at the LHC. The signature used in this search consists of two same-sign leptons, in any flavor combination of electrons and muons, and at least one jet. The data were collected during 2016 in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The results are found to be consistent with the expected standard model background. Upper limits are set in the mass range between 20 and 1600 GeV in the context of a Type-I seesaw mechanism, on |V$_{eN}$|$^{2}$, |V$_{μN}$|$^{2}$, and |V$_{eN}$V$_{μN}^{*}$ |$^{2}$/(|V$_{eN}$|$^{2}$ + |V$_{μN}$|$^{2}$), where V$_{ℓN}$ is the matrix element describing the mixing of N with the standard model neutrino of flavor ℓ = e, μ. For N masses between 20 and 1600 GeV, the upper limits on |V$_{ℓN}$|$^{2}$ range between 2.3 × 10$^{-5}$ and unity. These are the most restrictive direct limits for heavy Majorana neutrino masses above 430 GeV.

The leptoquark Hunter’s guide: large coupling

Leptoquarks have recently received much attention especially because they may provide an explanation to the R D(∗) and R K(∗) anomalies in rare B meson decays. In a previous paper we proposed a systematic search strategy for all possible leptoquark flavors by focusing on leptoquark pair production. In this paper, we extend this strategy to large (order unity) leptoquark couplings which offer new search opportunities: single leptoquark production and t-channel leptoquark exchange with dilepton final states. We discuss the unique features of the different search channels and show that they cover complementary regions of parameter space. We collect and update all currently available bounds for the different flavor final states from LHC searches and from atomic parity violation measurements. As an application of our analysis, we find that current limits do not exclude a leptoquark explanation of the B physics anomalies but that the high luminosity run of the LHC will reach the most interesting parameter space.

Measurement of $χ_{c1}$(3872) production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 and 13 TeV

The production cross-section of the $χ_{c1}$(3872) state relative to the $ψ(2S)$ meson is measured using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0 and 5.4 fb -1 , respectively. The two mesons are reconstructed in the $J/ψπ^+π^-$ final state. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt $χ_{c1}$(3872) to $ψ(2S)$ production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, $ρ_T$, and rapidity, y, of the $χ_{c1}$(3872) and $ψ(2S)$ states, in the kinematic range 4 < $ρ_T$ < 20 GeV/c and 2.0< y < 4.5. The prompt ratio is found to increase with $ρ_T$, independently of y. For the prompt component, the double ratio of the $χ_{c1}$(3872) and $ψ(2S)$ production cross-sections between 13 and 8 TeV is observed to be consistent with unity, independent of $ρ_T$ and centre-of-mass energy.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle b-jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

A measurement of the inclusive b-jet production cross section is presented in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The jets were reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η| < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.4. Identification of b jets exploits the long lifetime of b hadrons, using the properties of secondary vertices and impact parameter distributions. The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of b jets, as well as the corresponding inclusive b-jet fraction, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the jet transverse momentum range 10 ≤ p T,ch jet ≤ 100 GeV/c, together with the nuclear modification factor, $R^{b-jet}_{pPb}$. The analysis thus extends the lower p T limit of b-jet measurements at the LHC. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with unity, indicating that the production of b jets in p-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is not affected by cold nuclear matter effects within the current precision. The measurements are well reproduced by POWHEG NLO pQCD calculations with PYTHIA fragmentation.

Measurement of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of multiplicity in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The multiplicity dependence of electron production from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum was measured in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The measurement was performed in the centre-of-mass rapidity interval -1.07 < y cms < 0.14 and transverse momentum interval 2 < p T < 16 GeV/c. The multiplicity dependence of the production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays was studied by comparing the p T spectra measured for different multiplicity classes with those measured in pp collisions (Q pPb ) and in peripheral p-Pb collisions (Q cp ). The Q pPb results obtained are consistent with unity within uncertainties in the measured p T interval and event classes. This indicates that heavy-flavour decay electron production is consistent with binary scaling and independent of the geometry of the collision system. Additionally, the results suggest that cold nuclear matter effects are negligible within uncertainties, in the production of heavy-flavour decay electrons at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions.

Search for nonresonant new physics signals in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for nonresonant new physics phenomena in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets is performed using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The analysis considers two effective field theory models with dimension-six operators; involving four-fermion contact interactions between two leptons (ℓℓ, electrons or muons) and b or s quarks (bbℓℓ and bsℓℓ). Two lepton flavor combinations (ee and μμ) are required and events are classified as having 0, 1, or ≥2 b-tagged jets in the final state. No significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set on the production cross section of the new physics signals. These translate into lower limits on the energy scale Λ of 6.9 to 9.0 TeV in the bbℓℓ model, depending on model parameters, and on the ratio of energy scale and effective coupling, Λ/g*, of 2.0 to 2.6 TeV in the bsℓℓ model. Lepton flavor universality is also tested by comparing the dielectron (ee) and dimuon (μμ) mass spectra for different b-tagged jet multiplicities. No significant deviation from the standard model expectation of unity is observed.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a single top quark or a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A search for dark matter produced in association with top quarks in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. Whereas previous searches for neutral scalar or pseudoscalar mediators considered dark matter production in association with a top quark pair only, this analysis also includes production modes with a single top quark. The results are derived from the combination of multiple selection categories that are defined to target either the single top quark or the top quark pair signature. No significant deviations with respect to the standard model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted in the context of a simplified model in which a scalar or pseudoscalar mediator particle couples to a top quark and subsequently decays into dark matter particles. Scalar and pseudoscalar mediator particles with masses below 290 and 300 GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a dark matter particle mass of 1 GeV and mediator couplings to fermions and dark matter particles equal to unity.

Non-standard interactions in SMEFT confronted with terrestrial neutrino experiments

The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) provides a systematic and model-independent framework to study neutrino non-standard interactions (NSIs). We study the constraining power of the on-going neutrino oscillation experiments T2K, NO ν A, Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO in the SMEFT framework. A full consideration of matching is provided between different effective field theories and the renormalization group running at different scales, filling the gap between the low-energy neutrino oscillation experiments and SMEFT at the UV scale. We first illustrate our method with a top- down approach in a simplified scalar leptoquark model, showing more stringent constraints from the neutrino oscillation experiments compared to collider studies. We then provide a bottom-up study on individual dimension-6 SMEFT operators and find NSIs in neutrino experiments already sensitive to new physics at ~20 TeV when the Wilson coefficients are fixed at unity. We also investigate the correlation among multiple operators at the UV scale and find it could change the constraints on SMEFT operators by several orders of magnitude compared with when only one operator is considered. Furthermore, we find that accelerator and reactor neutrino experiments are sensitive to different SMEFT operators, which highlights the complementarity of the two experiment types.

Axion misalignment driven to the bottom

Several theoretical motivations point to ultralight QCD axions with large decay constants $f_a \simeq \mathcal{O}(10^{16}-10^{17})$ GeV, to which experimental proposals are dedicated. This regime is known to face the problem of overproduction of axion dark matter from the misalignment mechanism unless the misalignment angle $\theta_{\rm mis}$ is as small as $\mathcal{O}(10^{-3}-10^{-4})$, which is generally considered a fine-tuning problem. We investigate a dynamical explanation for a small $\theta_{\rm mis}$. The axion mass arises from strong dynamics and may be sufficiently enhanced by early dynamics so as to overcome Hubble friction and drive the field value to the bottom of the potential long before the QCD phase transition. Together with an approximate CP symmetry in the theory, this minimum is very closely related to today's value and thus $\theta_{\rm mis}$ can automatically be well under unity. Owing to such efficient relaxation, the isocurvature perturbations are essentially damped. As an existence proof, using supersymmetric theories we illustrate that the Higgs coupling with the inflaton energy can successfully achieve this axion damping in a consistent inflationary cosmology.

Mechanical structure of the nucleon and the baryon octet: twist-2 case

We investigate the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of the nucleon and the baryon octet, decomposed into their flavor components, utilizing a pion mean-field approach grounded in the large N c limit of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Our focus is on the contributions from the twist-2 operators to the flavor-triplet and octet GFFs, and we decompose the mass, angular momentum, and D-term form factors of the nucleon into their respective flavors. The strange quark contributions are found to be relatively mild for the mass and angular momentum form factors, while providing significant corrections to the D-term form factor. In the course of examining the flavor decomposition of the GFFs, we uncover that the effects of twist-4 operators play a crucial role. While the gluonic contributions are suppressed by the packing fraction of the instanton vacuum in the twist-2 case, contributions from twist-4 operators are of order unity, necessitating its explicit consideration.

Search for resonant and nonresonant new phenomena in high-mass dilepton final states at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model (SM) using electron or muon pairs with high invariant mass. A data set of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at √s = 13 TeV from 2016 to 2018 corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of up to 140 fb -1 is analyzed. No significant deviation is observed with respect to the SM background expectations. Upper limits are presented on the ratio of the product of the production cross section and the branching fraction to dileptons of a new narrow resonance to that of the Z boson. These provide the most stringent lower limits to date on the masses for various spin-1 particles, spin-2 gravitons in the Randall-Sundrum model, as well as spin-1 mediators between the SM and dark matter particles. Lower limits on the ultraviolet cutoff parameter are set both for four-fermion contact interactions and for the Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, and Dvali model with large extra dimensions. Lepton flavor universality is tested at the TeV scale for the first time by comparing the dimuon and dielectron mass spectra. No significant deviation from the SM expectation of unity is observed.

J/ψ production at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV

The production of inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/ψ was studied for the first time at midrapidity (–1.37 < y cms < 0.43) in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive J/ψ mesons were reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel in the transverse momentum (p T ) interval 0 < p T < 14 GeV/c and the prompt and non-prompt contributions were separated on a statistical basis for p T > 2 GeV/c. The study of the J/ψ mesons in the dielectron channel used for the first time in ALICE online single-electron triggers from the Transition Radiation Detector, providing a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 689 ± 13 μb –1 . The proton-proton reference cross section for inclusive J/ψ was obtained based on interpolations of measured data at different centre-of-mass energies and a universal function describing the p T -differential J/ψ production cross sections. The p T -differential nuclear modification factors R pPb of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψ are consistent with unity and described by theoretical models implementing only nuclear shadowing.

Inclusive and multiplicity dependent production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in pp and p-Pb collisions

Measurements of the production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at midrapidity with the ALICE detector are presented down to a transverse momentum (p T ) of 0.2 GeV/c and up to p T = 35 GeV/c, which is the largest momentum range probed for inclusive electron measurements in ALICE. In p-Pb collisions, the production cross section and the nuclear modification factor of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays are measured in the p T range 0.5 < p T < 26 GeV/c at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 8.16 TeV. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with unity within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. In both collision systems, first measurements of the yields of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in different multiplicity intervals normalised to the multiplicity-integrated yield (self-normalised yield) at midrapidity are reported as a function of the self-normalised charged-particle multiplicity estimated at midrapidity. The self-normalised yields in pp and p-Pb collisions grow faster than linear with the self-normalised multiplicity. A strong p T dependence is observed in pp collisions, where the yield of high-p T electrons increases faster as a function of multiplicity than the one of low-p T electrons. The measurement in p-Pb collisions shows no p T dependence within uncertainties. The self-normalised yields in pp and p-Pb collisions are compared with measurements of other heavy-flavour, light-flavour, and strange particles, and with Monte Carlo simulations.

Test of light-lepton universality in τ decays with the Belle II experiment

We present a measurement of the ratio R µ = $\mathcal{B}$($τ^- → µ^-\overline{ν}_µν_τ$)/$\mathcal{B}(τ^- → e^-\overline{ν}_eν_τ$) of branching fractions B of the τ lepton decaying to muons or electrons using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e + e - collider. The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 ± 2 fb -1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood ft is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, R µ = 0.9675 ± 0.0007 ± 0.0036, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the W boson in τ decays of 0.9974 ± 0.0019, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.
