Scale-dependent tipping points of bacterial colonization resistance

The commonly observed stability of natural microbiomes is important for their function, yet the ubiquity of microbiome stability remains enigmatic. The strongest form of stability, colonization resistance, protects residents against invaders and is often associated with specific porous structures, such as skin follicles or intestinal crypts. By systematically probing the colonization of fly gut–derived bacteria in microfluidic pores of varying sizes, we revealed that colonization patterns and invasion rates strongly depend on the pore size. Mathematical modeling shows that bacteria spontaneously tend to organize into a dense colonization-resistant state in pores exceeding a critical size. The scale dependence of stability and resilience could bias ecological filtering in microbiomes and should be considered in the design of microbial ecology experiments.

Probabilistic picture for particle number densities in stretched tips of the branching Brownian motion

Abstract In the framework of a stochastic picture for the one-dimensional branching Brownian motion, we compute the probability density of the number of particles near the rightmost one at a time T , that we take very large, when this extreme particle is conditioned to arrive at a predefined position x T chosen far ahead of its expected position m T . We recover the previously conjectured fact that the typical number density of particles at a distance Δ to the left of the lead particle, when both Δ and are large, is smaller than the mean number density by a factor proportional to , where ζ is a constant that was so far undetermined. Our picture leads to an expression for the probability density of the particle number, from which a value for ζ may be inferred.

Metal-Tipped and Electrochemically Wired Semiconductor Nanocrystals: Modular Constructs for Directed Charge Transfer

In our 2017 proposal to the Solar Photochemistry division of DOE/BES/Office of Science we targeted the creation, characterization and integratation of new II-IV semiconductor heterostructured nanomaterials into ultra-thin film (tethered) nanocrystalline arrays on transparent metal oxide (TCO) supports. Materials were to include CdSe quantum dots (QDs), asymmetric CdSe@CdS tetrapods (TPs) and CdSe@CdS nanorods (NRs), into unique photoelectrochemical platforms. The ultimate goal was to tether these new nanomaterials to either electron- or hole-selective oxide interlayers that would afford vectoral photo-induced charge transfer and ultimately formation of molecular products such as H 2 . This was an ambitious set of goals but integrated well with our previous work in this general area.
