Average latitudinal variation in ultraviolet radiation at the earth's surface

Tabulated values are presented for ultraviolet radiation at the earth's surface as a function of wavelength, latitude, and season, for clear sky and seasonally and latitudinally averaged ozone amounts. These tabulations can be combined with any biological sensitivity function in order to obtain the seasonal and latitudinal variation of the corresponding effective doses. The integrated dosages, based on the erythemal sensitivity curve and on the Robertson-Berger sunburn-meter sensitivity curve, have also been calculated, and these are found to vary with latitude and season in very nearly the same way as 307 and 314 nm radiation, respectively.

Power law relationships for rain attenuation and reflectivity

The equivalent reflectivity, specific attenuation and volumetric backscatter cross section of rain are calculated and tabulated at a number of frequencies from 1 to 500 GHz using classical Mie theory. The first two parameters are shown to be closely approximated as functions of rain rate by the power law aR to the b power. The a's and b's are also tabulated and plotted for convenient reference.

An image based information system - Architecture for correlating satellite and topological data bases

The paper describes the development of an image based information system and its use to process a Landsat thematic map showing land use or land cover in conjunction with a census tract polygon file to produce a tabulation of land use acreages per census tract. The system permits the efficient cross-tabulation of two or more geo-coded data sets, thereby setting the stage for the practical implementation of models of diffusion processes or cellular transformation. Characteristics of geographic information systems are considered, and functional requirements, such as data management, geocoding, image data management, and data analysis are discussed. The system is described, and the potentialities of its use are examined.

Tables of stark level transition probabilities and branching ratios in hydrogen-like atoms

The transition probabilities which are given in terms of n prime k prime and n k are tabulated. No additional summing or averaging is necessary. The electric quantum number k plays the role of the angular momentum quantum number l in the presence of an electric field. The branching ratios between stark levels are also tabulated. Necessary formulas for the transition probabilities and branching ratios are given. Symmetries are discussed and selection rules are given. Some disagreements for some branching ratios are found between the present calculation and the measurement of Mark and Wierl. The transition probability multiplied by the statistical weight of the initial state is called the static intensity J sub S, while the branching ratios are called the dynamic intensity J sub D.

New atomic data for Fe/+19/

New atomic data are tabulated for Fe(+19). The electron collision strengths are calculated using the 'distorted wave' approximation and results are presented for several energies of the exciting electron. The populations of the ground levels are calculated as a function of electron density under conditions appropriate to solar flares and tokamak plasmas. Theoretical intensity ratios are tabulated for the UV lines.

Climatological characteristics of high altitude wind shear and lapse rate layers

Indications of the climatological distribution of wind shear and temperature lapse and inversion rates as observed by rawinsonde measurements over the western United States are recorded. Frequencies of the strongest shear, lapse rates, and inversion layer strengths were observed for a 1 year period of record and were tabulated for the lower troposphere, the upper troposphere, and five altitude intervals in the lower stratosphere. Selected bivariate frequencies were also tabulated. Strong wind shears, lapse rates, and inversion are observed less frequently as altitude increases from 175 millibars to 20 millibars. On a seasonal basis the frequencies were higher in winter than in summer except for minor influences due to increased tropopause altitude in summer and the stratospheric wind reversal in the spring and fall.

Ultraviolet photometry from the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory. XXXIV - Filter photometry of 531 stars of diverse types

Ultraviolet magnitudes for 531 stars observed with the Wisconsin Experiment Package on OAO 2 are tabulated. It is noted that these data constitute a subset of the OAO 2 data on file at the National Space Science Data Center. The tabulation contains previously published data all reduced to a uniform magnitude system. It is pointed out that the observations were obtained with the medium band interference filter photometers. Eleven magnitudes are given designated by their centroid wavelengths.

Methodology for measurement of fault latency in a digital avionic miniprocessor

Using a gate level emulation of a typical avionics miniprocessor, fault injection experiments were performed to (1) determine the time to detect a fault by comparison monitoring, (2) forecast a program's ability to detect faults and (3) validate the fault detection coverage of a typical self test program. To estimate time to detect, six programs ranging in complexity from 6 to 147 instructions, were emulated. Each program was executed repetitively in the presence of a single stuck at fault at a gate node or device pin. Detection was assumed to occur whenever the computed outputs differed from the corresponding outputs of the same program executed in a nonfaulted processor. Histograms of faults detected versus number of repetitions to detection were tabulated. Using a simple model of fault detection, which was based in an analog with the selection of balls in an urn, distributions of time to detect were computed and compared with those obtained empirically. A self test program of 2,000 executable instructions was designed expressly for the study. The only requirement imposed on the design was that it should achieve 95% coverage. The program was executed in the presence of a single stuck-at fault at a gate node on device pin. The proportion of detected faults are tabulated. In all experiments faults were selected at random over gate nodes or device pins.

Radiometric performance of the Voyager cameras

The Voyager Imaging Experiment provided high-quality data of Jupiter and the Galilean satellites with the two flyby trajectories in March and July of 1979. Moderately accurate radiometric measurements have been made using these data. This paper evaluates the radiometric results and describes the inflight and ground geometric and radiometric correction factors. The radiometric quantities of intensity I and geometric albedo I/F are derived, and scaling factors for each of the filters are tabulated for correcting the 'calibrated' data from the Image Processing Laboratory at JPL. In addition, the key characteristics of both Voyager I and Voyager 2 cameras are tabulated.
