Triton Blushes: A Clue to Global Warming?

The large Neptunian satellite Triton is a geologically active body that apparently undergoes complex seasonal changes in its 165 year journey around the sun. Because it is the vehicle for the seasonal transport of volatiles, Triton's atmosphere is expected to undergo large changes in temperature and pressure on a time scale of decades.

Optimizing High-Throughput Inference on Graph Neural Networks at Shared Computing Facilities with the NVIDIA Triton Inference Server

Abstract With machine learning applications now spanning a variety of computational tasks, multi-user shared computing facilities are devoting a rapidly increasing proportion of their resources to such algorithms. Graph neural networks (GNNs), for example, have provided astounding improvements in extracting complex signatures from data and are now widely used in a variety of applications, such as particle jet classification in high energy physics (HEP). However, GNNs also come with an enormous computational penalty that requires the use of GPUs to maintain reasonable throughput. At shared computing facilities, such as those used by physicists at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), methodical resource allocation and high throughput at the many-user scale are key to ensuring that resources are being used as efficiently as possible. These facilities, however, primarily provide CPU-only nodes, which proves detrimental to time-to-insight and computational throughput for workflows that include machine learning inference. In this work, we describe how a shared computing facility can use the NVIDIA Triton Inference Server to optimize its resource allocation and computing structure, recovering high throughput while scaling out to multiple users by massively parallelizing their machine learning inference. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this system in a realistic multi-user environment, we use the Fermilab Elastic Analysis Facility augmented with the Triton Inference Server to provide scalable and high-throughput access to a HEP-specific GNN and report on the outcome.

TRITON: A Multi-GPU open source 2D hydrodynamic flood model

A new open source multi-GPU 2D flood model called TRITON is presented in this work. The model solves the 2D shallow water equations with source terms using a time-explicit first order upwind scheme based on an Augmented Roe's solver that incorporates a careful estimation of bed strengths and a local implicit formulation of friction terms. Here, the scheme is demonstrated to be first order accurate, robust and able to solve for flows under various conditions. TRITON is implemented such that the model effectively utilizes heterogeneous architectures, from single to multiple CPUs and GPUs. Different test cases are shown to illustrate the capabilities and performance of the model, showing promising runtimes for large spatial and temporal scales when leveraging the computer power of GPUs. Under this hardware configuration, communication and input/output subroutines may impact the scalability. The code is developed under an open source license and can be freely downloaded in https://code.ornl.gov/hydro/triton.

Modeling and Design of the Triton OWC System (Final Report)

Two versions of the Triton Oscillating Water Column type device will be modeled in WEC Sim. First, a model of a wave-tank scale device which can be tuned and validated against tank test data. Second, a model of the deployment-scale device will be constructed following the method of the tank-scale device to ensure that relevant physics are captured. In the latter case, the geometry, PTO architecture, and other design details are not yet finalized, so the model will serve as a platform for design iteration as time and budget allows. A subset of this iteration will be automated using existing WEC-Sim capabilities. A primary focus of this work will be familiarizing Triton personnel with the WEC-Sim workflow and model details so that the model of the deployment device can continue to be enhanced after project end.

A triton X-100 assisted PMAxx-qPCR assay for rapid assessment of infectious African swine fever virus

Introduction African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly infectious disease of pigs, caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV). The lack of vaccines and drugs makes strict disinfection practices to be one of the main measurements to curb the transmission of ASF. Therefore, it is important to assess if all viruses are inactivated after disinfection or after long time exposure in their natural conditions. Currently, the infectivity of ASFV is determined by virus isolation and culture in a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory. However, BSL-3 laboratories are not readily available, need skilled expertise and may be time consuming. Methods In this study, a Triton X-100 assisted PMAxx-qPCR method was developed for rapid assessment of infectious ASFV in samples. PMAxx, an improved version of propidium monoazide (PMA), can covalently cross-link with naked ASFV-DNA or DNA inside inactivated ASFV virions under assistance of 0.1% (v/v) TritonX-100, but not with ASFV-DNA inside live virions. Formation of PMAxx-DNA conjugates prevents PCR amplification, leaving only infectious virions to be detected. Under optimum conditions, the limit of detection of the PMAxx-qPCR assay was 2.32log 10 HAD 50 /mL of infectious ASFV. Testing different samples showed that the PMAxx-qPCR assay was effective to evaluate intact ASFV virions after treatment by heat or chemical disinfectants and in simulated samples such as swine tissue homogenate, swine saliva swabs, and environmental swabs. However, whole-blood and saliva need to be diluted before testing because they may inhibit the PCR reaction or the cross-linking of PMAxx with DNA. Conclusion The Triton X-100 assisted PMAxx-qPCR assay took less than 3 h from sample to result, offering an easier and faster way for assessing infectious ASFV in samples from places like pig farms and pork markets.

Narrow-band spectrophotometry of Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon, and Triton

The spectral reflectances of Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon, and Triton were measured in 28 bandpasses between lambda 326 and lambda 976 nm on the night of 28/29 June 1974. These observations were made with the 200-in. Hale telescope and multichannel spectrometer. Bandpasses of 8 nm from lambda 326 to lambda 566 nm and 16 nm from lambda 592 to lambda 976 nm were employed. The spectral reflectances of Ariel, Oberon, and Titania increase from lambda 342 to lambda 534 nm and are relatively flat from lambda 550 to lambda 976 nm. Umbriel's reflectance decreases monotonically with increasing wavelength through the entire range of measured wavelengths. Triton is found to have a constant spectral reflectance.

Triton - A satellite with an atmosphere

A low-resolution infrared spectrum of Triton in the region 1.4-2.6 microns shows a broad absorption at 2.3 microns which is attributed to gaseous methane. The computed surface partial pressure of CH4, based on a random band model extrapolation of new laboratory spectra, is (1 + or - 0.5) times 10 to the -4th bars, a value consistent with the calculated vapor pressure of methane gas above methane ice at the expected temperature of Triton. There is, however, no compelling evidence for the presence of solid CH4 on the satellite's surface.

UBV photometry of Triton

UBV measurements of Triton relative to Neptune were obtained with an area-scanning photometer on 11 nights during the 1977 apparition. Observed orbital brightness variation shows that Triton is locked in synchronous rotation around Neptune. Its leading side, seen at greatest western elongation, is found to be 0.06 mag brighter than its trailing hemisphere.

Diameters of Triton and Pluto

The Neptune satellite Triton and the planet Pluto, whose diameter and albedo must be estimated by indirect methods, invite comparative study because of their similar brightness and current distance of 30 AU from the sun. IR spectroscopy has detected methane on both objects. Upper limits are given for the thermal IR emission from these objects which allow the determination of significant upper diameter limits. It is also demonstrated that both are high albedo objects, excluding the possibility that Triton is the largest planetary satellite and consistent with the small Pluto dimensions deduced from other data

Some constraints on a greenhouse atmosphere for Triton

The possibility that a thick atmosphere exists around Neptune's satellite Triton is examined. The IR optical depth in the gray atmosphere approximation is computed for a range of possible surface compositions, albedos, and gravities. It is found that a self-sustaining optically-thick atmosphere is possible if molecular nitrogen and/or hydrogen are present. It is suggested that bimodal behavior of Triton's atmosphere is possible as seasonal effects and volatile distribution alter the distribution of thermal emission.

V photometry of Titania, Oberon, and Triton

The phase angle and orbital brightness variations of Titania, Oberon, and Triton are presently obtained through analysis of V filter photometry obtained at Mauna Kea in 1982-1983. While Titania and Oberon exhibit magnitude variations with phase angle comparable to those of low-to-moderate albedo asteroids observed within several deg of opposition, Triton's phase variation is distinctly different from these and has a phase coefficient consistent with either a high-albedo regolith or an optically thick nonparticulate scattering layer (perhaps an atmosphere, or an ocean). A low-albedo regolith cannot on the strength of these data be ruled out, however.

The brightness and lightcurve of Triton in 1987

At the 8900 A wavelength of the CCD and photoelectric photometry obtained for Triton in 1987, where than moon's methane absorption might be reflected as a strong contrast, no rotational lightcurve has been noted to a level of below 0.02 mag, in contradiction of Franz's (1981) apparent lightcurve of 0.06 mag observed in 1977. Triton's photoelectrically determined 1987 V magnitude is consistent with the most reliable of previous measurements, exhibiting no clear indication of long-term change.

Present state and chemical evolution of the atmospheres of Titan, Triton, and Pluto

An evaluation is made of the current understanding of the atmospheres of Titan, Triton, and Pluto, as well as of theoretical models for their origin and evolution. All three atmospheres contain methane, while Titan, and probably Triton, have nitrogen. The primary driver in the evolution of the Titan atmosphere has been the irreversible photolysis of methane. If a surface reservoir of liquid methane exists to resupply the atmosphere, it is subject to enrichment in ethane due to the long-term photolysis of methane. The key issue in the origin and early evolution of Titan's atmosphere is the source of molecular nitrogen; two schemes for the conversion of ammonia to nitrogen have been considered.

Albedo patterns on Triton

A model for seasonal taransport of volatiles based on Trafton (1984) is coupled to considerations of methane photochemistry to infer albedo patterns on Triton's surface at the time of the Voyager encounter. The relatively large southern subsolar latitude at present is predicted to cause the deposition of an extensive fresh frost layer covering approximately the northern half of the planet. Sublimation of Triton's south polar ice has been occurring since 1930, but has been preferentially occurring near the pole. The sublimation of ices in this region may be concentrating dark organic matter on the surface of the ice or exposing layers of this material which have built up in the ice over many seasonal cycles. The south polar cap may be distinctly darker near the pole than around the equatorward edge.

Grain metamorphism in polar nitrogen ice on Triton

The rate of nitrogen grain growth on putative N2-rich polar caps on Triton is calculated. For most plausible assumptions of independent variables, mean grain sizes in polar N2 are meter-scale. Triton's polar caps should constitute the definitive solar-system test bed for the process of ice grain metamorphism. Interpretation of data already in hand may require long path length through condensed N2, possibly due to grain growth. Upcoming Voyager data may clarify the situation, although possible complications in detecting a glaze of N2 ice exist.

Triton - Scattering models and surface/atmosphere constraints

Modeling of Triton's spectrum indicates a bright scattering layer of optical depth tau about 3 overlying an optically deep layer of CH4 with high absorption and little scattering. UV absorption in the spectrum indicates tau about 0.3 of red-yellow haze, although some color may also arise from complex organics partially visible on the surface. An analysis of this and other (spectro)photometric evidence indicates that Triton most likely has a bright surface, which was partially visible in 1977-1980. Geometric albedo p = 0.62 + 0.18 or - 0.12 radius r = 1480 + or - 180 km, and temperature T = 48 + or - 6 K. With scattering optical depths of 0.3-3 and about 1-10 mb of N2, a Mars-like atmospheric density and surface visibility pertain.

Ultraviolet spectrometer observations of Neptune and Triton

Results from the occultation of the sun by Neptune imply a temperature of 750 + or - 150 kelvins in the upper levels of the atmosphere (composed mostly of atomic and molecular hydrogen) and define the distributions of methane, acetylene, and ethane at lower levels. The ultraviolet spectrum of the sunlit atmosphere of Neptune resembles the spectra of the Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus atmospheres in that it is dominated by the emissions of H Lyman alpha (340 + or - 20 rayleighs) and molecular hydrogen. The extreme ultraviolet emission in the range from 800 to 1100 angstroms at the four planets visited by Voyager scale approximately as the inverse square of their heliocentric distances. Weak auroral emissions have been tentatively identified on the night side of Neptune. Airglow and occultation observations of Triton's atmosphere show that it is composed mainly of molecular nitrogen, with a trace of methane near the surface. The temperature of Triton's upper atmosphere is 95 + or - 5 kelvins, and the surface pressure is roughly 14 microbars.
