Comparison of AGR-3/4 Fission Product Transport Model to Measurements and Extraction of Diffusivities via Analytical Fits

A one-dimensional finite-element model based on the MOOSE framework has been constructed, and overall transport estimates are predicted based on available diffusivities and sorption isotherms in the extant literature. The predicted transport profiles are compared to experimental results, where such results are available, including total inventory analysis of gamma emitters, liquid scintillation results for Sr-90 concentrations, radial deconsolidation leach-burn-leach within compacts, tomographic reconstructions based on detailed gamma scanning and destructive physical sampling of several rings. The magnitude of expected transport to the sink ring is generally predicted by the model for silver and cesium, however, modeled detailed concentration profiles are not consistent with experimental results. Strontium and europium transport is not well characterized by model results.

Advanced Microscopy Report on UCO Fuel Kernels from Selected AGR-1 and AGR-2 Experiments

A variety of neutron irradiation experiments were completed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) on tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particles contained in a graphitic matrix as part of the Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR) fuel development and qualification program. Although the initial advanced microscopy and microanalysis studies on AGR-1 particles focused predominantly on the SiC layer?s role as the main fission-product containment, studies were further expanded to evaluate UCO kernels of selected AGR-1 and AGR-2 coated particles. Fuel kernels tested in the AGR-1 and AGR-2 experiments is composed of a mixture of UO2 and UC, with a nominal as-fabricated stoichiometry of UO1.37 C0.35 and UO1.43 C0.39, respectively. These as-fabricated kernel-stoichiometry values are determined at the completion of kernel fabrication and do not account for any changes that will occur during the subsequent coating and compacting processes.

Low-Power Nuclear Heating Tests of UN Fuel Particles in Hydrogen Environment for Nuclear Thermal Propulsion

Recently, there has been a reemergence of interest within the space-exploration community regarding nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) for interplanetary travel. NTP, as conceptualized, is a compact propulsion source, is relatively light because there is no need for an oxidizing agent and has a very high specific impulse compared to traditional forms of propulsion. These factors would reduce first-leg orbital-rocketry costs (by the source’s low weight and volume) and decrease overall travel time for astronauts with higher transit speeds. Idaho National Laboratory was provided bare, uncoated, and tungsten-coated uranium nitride fuel particles as part of a preliminary investigation. The fuel was fabricated by BWX Technologies and irradiated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology research reactor. X-ray computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy and associated chemical analysis techniques were performed on these particles at Idaho National Laboratory. Both coated and uncoated forms were examined in the as-fabricated and as-irradiated conditions. The tungsten coating was found to be intact following the irradiation, indicating positive attributes for performance under these low-power-irradiation conditions. The irradiation of uncoated particles resulted in nitrogen enrichment at the edge of the particle.
