Integrated process-structure–property–performance optimization of cold-sprayed zinc coatings on AZ91 magnesium alloy

High-pressure die cast (HPDC) AZ91 magnesium alloy is widely used in automotive components such as transmission housings and brackets for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Zinc-based cold spray coatings can be applied selectively to vulnerable areas to enhance corrosion resistance, minimize galvanic coupling with dissimilar metals, and eliminate the need for full-surface oxide coatings, making the process more efficient and targeted. A comprehensive evaluation of 16 combinations of nitrogen carrier gas temperatures and pressures led to the identification of an optimal range of process parameters, yielding Zn coatings with porosity <0.5 % by area, wear rates reduced by a factor of two compared to uncoated AZ91, and adhesion strengths up to 35 MPa. The enhanced mechanical performance of the coating is attributed to the low porosity and the formation of a metallurgical bond at the coating-substrate interface. Corrosion studies using macroscale potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed a significant decrease in corrosion rate and a shift to more noble corrosion potentials (ZCP) for coated substrates. Furthermore, the Zn cold-sprayed samples exhibited significantly lower corrosion-induced evolved hydrogen content compared to the base AZ91 substrate and AZ91 coated with industrial coatings, demonstrating that the Zn layer effectively protects the substrate from the corrosive environment. Overall, cold spray Zn coatings significantly improve the mechanical and corrosion performance of AZ91 Mg alloys, addressing key material challenges and enabling their broader use in automotive applications.

Structure–property relations in graphitic pebbles for nuclear applications

This work presents an analytical approach for holistically characterizing graphitic matrix pebbles for nuclear applications whereby the macrostructure, microstructure, and thermophysical properties of pebbles are determined. A systematic sectioning method was applied to several pebbles to describe the regional properties of the samples. Intact matrix-only spheres and sections of spheres fabricated by Kairos Power were characterized via optical imaging, x-ray computed tomography, x-ray diffraction, and ellipsometry to determine 2D and 3D macrostructure and anisotropy. The thermophysical properties of these materials were determined via measurements of density, specific heat, thermal expansion, and thermal diffusivity. The results of this study indicate that the pebble fabrication methods and their resultant effect on microstructure have a nontrivial effect on thermophysical properties, confirming the importance of robust characterization of these components. A discussion of the characterization approach and its applicability to nuclear fuel development activities is also included.

Structure-property correlation in stabilizing axial magnetic anisotropy in octahedral Co(II) complexes

Stabilizing an easy axis of magnetization in an octahedral Co(II) complex is an extremely challenging task, which is evident from reports that more than 90% possess easy-plane anisotropy. Here, we report a six-coordinate complex, [Co(L 1 ) 4 (Cl) 2 ] (1, L 1 = thiourea [H 2 N-CS-NH 2 ]), that exhibits a D value of -63(10) cm -1 . The presence of an easy axis of magnetization associated with 1 is experimentally proven by detailed magnetic studies and polarized neutron diffraction studies, and the experimental observations are well corroborated by theoretical calculations. From the combined experimental and theoretical investigations (on 1 and many model systems), we unveil the parameters that control stabilization of negative D in a thermodynamically favorable and air-stable Co(II) ion in the common distorted octahedral geometry. This study paves the way for overcoming the current impediments to alleviate the easy axis of magnetization using rational ligand choice.

Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbenes: Synthesis of Iminium Precursors and Structural Properties

Using readily available pre-allylated aldehydes, in this work we report a simple and divergent synthesis of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) iminium precursors. Using a combination of crystallographic data and steric maps, we further elaborate on the specific steric properties of CAAC ligands with respect to state-of-the-art phosphine and carbene ligands.
