Observations of six flat spectrum sources from the 5 GHz survey

Observations at radio, optical, and X-ray wavelengths of six sources from the Bonn-NRAO 5 GHz survey are reported. The sources were selected on the basis of their flux densities and spectral indices at 5 GHz. All have been shown to contain compact radio cores and to emit strongly at X-ray wavelengths; five are strongly polarized at optical wavelengths. The measured flux densities suggest that the sources are of comparable luminosity (per fractional bandwidth) in the X-ray and optical regions. The interpretation of these results in terms of a synchrotron-self-Compton mechanism is briefly discussed.

Design and development of a six degree of freedom hand controller

The design objectives of a six degree of freedom manual controller are discussed with emphasis on a space environment. Details covered include problems associated with a zero-g environment, the need to accommodate both 'shirt sleeve' and space suited astronauts, the combination of both manipulator operation and spacecraft flight control in a single device, and to accommodate restraints in space. A variable configuration device designed as a development tool in which rotational axes can be moved relative to one another, is described and its limitations discussed. Two additional devices were developed for concept testing. Each device combines the need for good quality with its ability achieve a wide range of adjustments.

Track train dynamics analysis and test program: Methodology development for the derailment safety analysis of six-axle locomotives

The operational safety of six axle locomotives is analyzed. A locomotive model with corresponding data on suspension characteristics, a method of track defect characterization, and a method of characterizing operational safety are used. A user oriented software package was developed as part of the methodology and was used to study the effect (on operational safety) of various locomotive parameters and operational conditions such as speed, tractive effort, and track curvature. The operational safety of three different locomotive designs was investigated.

Abundances of argon, sulfur, and neon in six galactic H II regions from infrared forbidden lines

Airborne measurements of the Ar II (6.99 micron) and S III (18.71 micron) forbidden lines for six compact H II regions are presented, as well as ground-based 2-4 micron and 8-13 micron spectroscopy if not already published. From these data and radio data, lower limits to the elemental abundances of Ar, Ne, and S are deduced. G29.9-0.0, at 5 kpc from the galactic center, is overabundant in all these elements. The other five regions (at distances 6-13 kpc from the center) mainly appear to be consistent with standard abundances, with the exception of G75.84 + 0.4 at 10 kpc from the galactic center, which is overabundant in S. However, preliminary results on G12.8-0.2 at 6 kpc from the galactic center suggest a possible underabundance. A large statistical sample of H II regions is required in order to determine if there is a radial gradient in the heavy element abundances of the Galaxy.

Control system analysis and synthesis for a six degree-of-freedom universal Force-Reflecting Hand Controller

A six degree-of-freedom joystick with feedback motors, called the Force-Reflecting Hand Controller (FRHC) is used as control input for the human operator in a teleoperator system. The geometric and dynamic properties of the FRHC are entirely different from those of the manipulator being controlled. The paper discusses the analysis and synthesis of the control loop between the FRHC and the robot arm and examines the necessary position and force transformations. The controller is implemented through a dedicated minicomputer.

Test chips for custom ICs - Six kinds of test structures

Microelectronic test chips contain a number of test structures that are used for a variety of purposes in fabricating integrated circuits. For convenience, their use is divided into six groups: layout-rule evaluating, process-parameter extraction, device-parameter extraction, circuit-parameter extraction, initial-fabrication failure analysis, and reliability failure analysis. A given test structure can be used to gather information in a number of these groups. Examples are given here of the kinds of parameters that can be obtained in each of these groups. A table is included summarizing various device failures common to bulk CMOS and indicating failure mechanisms appearing after wafer fabrication and after stress.

Six quasars near the jets of NGC 1097

Six quasars have been discovered in a 0.43 sq deg field surrounding NGC 1097. The quasars are grouped in a small area of the field: five of the quasars lie within the area defined by the jets emanating from the galaxy. Four of the quasars are clearly detected in a deep X-ray map of the field. The probability of finding such an unusual configuration is discussed.

Creep-rupture behavior of six candidate Stirling engine superalloys tested in air

The creep-rupture behavior of six candidate Stirling engine iron-base superalloys was determined in air. The alloys included four wrought alloys (A-286, Alloy 800H, N-155, and 19-9DL) and two cast alloys (CRM-6D and XF-818). The specimens were tested to rupture for times up to 3000 h at 650 to 925 C. Rupture life, t(r) minimum creep rate, and time to 1-percent creep strain t(0.01) were statistically analyzed as a function of stress and temperature. Estimated stress levels at different temperatures to obtain 3500 h t(r) and t(0.01) lives were determined. These data will be compared with similar data being obtained under 15 MPa hydrogen.

Six mechanisms used on the SSM/1 radiometer

Future USAF Block 5D Defense Meteorological Satellites will carry a scanning microwave radiometer sensor (SSM/1). SSM/1 senses the emission of microwave energy and returns to earth data used to determine weather conditions, such as rainfall rates, soil moisture, and oceanic wind speed. The overall design of the SSM/1 radiometer was largely influenced by the mechanisms. The radiometer was designed to be stowed in a cavity on the existing spacecraft. The deployment of the sensor is complex due to the constraint of this cavity and the need for precision in the deployment. The radiometer will continuously rotate, instead of oscillate, creating the need for a bearing and power transfer assembly and a momentum compensation device. The six mechanisms developed for this program are described.

The absolute flux of six hot stars in the ultraviolet (912-1600 A)

Six hot stars were observed on 1984 March 2 from a Black Brant V sounding rocket (NASA 21.085UG). The absolute fluxes from Gamma 2 Vel, Zeta Pup, Alpha CMa ,Gamma Ori, Beta Tau, and Epsilon Per were measured in the spectral region between 912 and 1600 A at 10 A resolution. Comparisons with revised Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 Ultraviolet Spectrometer data and previous sounding rocket data are evaluated. In general, the two sounding rocket experiments are in good agreement, and the revised Voyager data and the sounding rocket data are in agreement except at wavelengths below 1000 A.

A method for linearizing a nonlinear system with six state variables and three control variables

A nonlinear system governed by x = f(x,u) with six state variables and three control variables is considered in this project. A set of transformations from (x,u) - space to (z,v) - space is defined such that the linear tangent model is independent of the operating point in the z-space. Therefore, it is possible to design a control law satisfying all operating points in the transformed space. An algorithm to construct the above transformations and to obtain the associated linearized system is described in this report. This method is applied to a rigid body using pole placement for the control law. Results are verified by numerical simulation. Closed loop poles in x-space using traditional local linearization are compared with those pole placements in the z-space.

Six reasons why thermospheric measurements and models disagree

The differences between thermospheric measurements and models are discussed. Sometimes the model is in error and at other times the measurements are, but it also is possible for both to be correct, yet have the comparison result in an apparent disagreement. These reasons are collected for disagreement, and, whenever possible, methods of reducing or eliminating them are suggested. The six causes of disagreement discussed are: actual errors caused by the limited knowledge of gas-surface interactions and by in-track winds; limitations of the thermospheric general circulation models due to incomplete knowledge of the energy sources and sinks as well as incompleteness of the parameterization which must be employed; and limitations imposed on the empirical models by the conceptual framework and the transient waves.

Six component robotic force-torque sensor

The results of a two-phase contract studying the feasibility of a miniaturized six component force-torque sensor and development of a working laboratory system were described. The principle of operation is based upon using ultrasonic pulse-echo ranging to determine the position of ultrasonic reflectors attached to a metal or ceramic cover plate. Because of the small size of the sensor, this technology may have application in robotics, to sense forces and torques at the finger tip of a robotic end effector. Descriptions are included of laboratory experiments evaluating materials and techniques for sensor fabrication and of the development of support electronics for data acquisition, computer interface, and operator display.

The X-ray surface brightness distribution and spectral properties of six early-type galaxies

Detailed analysis is presented of the Einstein X-ray observations of six early-type galaxies. The results show that effective cooling is probably present in these systems, at least in the innermost regions. Interaction with the surrounding medium has a major effect on the X-ray surface brightness distribution at large radii, at least for galaxies in clusters. The data do not warrant the general assumptions of isothermality and gravitational hydrostatic equilibrium at large radii. Comparison of the X-ray surface brightness profiles with model predictions indicate that 1/r-squared halos with masses of the order of 10 times the stellar masses are required to match the data. The physical model of White and Chevalier (1984) for steady cooling flows in a King law potential with no heavy halo gives a surface brightness distribution that resembles the data if supernovae heating is present.

Spectroscopy of six X-ray-selected BL Lacertae candidates

Results of a continuing program aimed at extending the small list of X-ray-selected BL Lac objects are reported. High-quality spectra have been obtained of six faint blue objects that lie within the positional error boxes of X-ray sources discovered serendipitously by the Einstein Observatory. Three of the objects are found to be previously uncataloged low-red-shift quasi-stellar objects, including one formerly suggested as BL Lac candidate. Two are faint galactic stars, while the final object has a featureless spectrum, and thus remains a candidate. Although X-ray selection may ultimately be an effective means of discovering faint BL Lac objects, such sources are evidently rare at the X-ray flux levels attainable by the Einstein Observatory.
