Phase evolution and amorphous stability upon solid-state reaction in superlattice like Ge–Sb–Te combinatorial thin-film

In this paper, the superlattice-like (SLL) Ge–Sb–Te combinatorial thin films were prepared by using a high-throughput ion beam sputtering system. The phase evolution and amorphous stability of such films undergoing heat treatment as a function of the coating sequence and modulation period were systematically studied. The composition structure diagram was constructed via an automated process of data obtained by high-throughput synchrotron micro-X-ray diffraction and lab-based micro-X-ray fluorescence. Furthermore, the element distribution and microstructure in the depth direction of the SLL thin films were characterized with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. These studies demonstrated that the coating sequence has a significant effect on the element distribution in the as-deposited SLL thin films and the structure of the final product upon solid-state reaction. Reducing the modulation period of the SLL thin film improves the stability of the amorphous Ge–Sb–Te phase. This work lays a solid foundation for the rational design of SLL Ge–Sb–Te thin films to improve their performance.

High Thermoelectric Performance in 2D Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 Nanoplate Composites Enabled by Energy Carrier Filtering and Low Thermal Conductivity

Thermoelectrics are an important class of materials with great potential in alternative energy applications. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) nanoplates of the layered chalcogenides, Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 , are synthesized and composites of the two are investigated for their thermoelectric properties. The two materials, Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 , were synthesized as hexagonal, 2D nanoplates via a colloidal polyol route. The as-synthesized Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 vary drastically from one another in their lateral and vertical dimensions as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The single crystalline nanoplate nature is deduced by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction. Nanoplates have well-defined hexagonal facets as seen in the scanning and transmission electron microscopy images. The nanoplates were consolidated as an anisotropic nanostructured pellet via spark plasma sintering. Preferred orientation observed in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern and scanning electron microscopy images of the fractured pellets confirm the anisotropic structure of the nanoplates. Thermoelectric properties in the parallel and perpendicular directions were measured, revealing strong anisotropy with a significant reduction to thermal conductivity in the perpendicular direction due to increased phonon scattering at nanoplate interfaces. All compositions, except that of the 25% Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplate composite, behave as degenerate semiconductors with increasing electrical resistivity as the temperature increases. The Seebeck coefficient is also increased dramatically in the nanocomposites, the highest reaching 210 μV/K for 15% Bi 2 Te 3 . The increase in Seebeck is attributed to energy carrier filtering at the nanoplate interfaces. Overall, these enhanced thermoelectric properties lead to a drastic increase in the thermoelectric performance in the perpendicular direction, with zT ~ 1.26, for the 15% Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplate composite at 450 K.

Colloidal Synthesis of Palladium Nanocluster‐Decorated Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 Perovskite Heterostructural Nanorods for Enhanced CO 2 Photoreduction

Developing efficient and sustainable photocatalysts for CO 2 reduction remains a significant challenge, particularly with environmentally benign materials. Here, in this study, we report the first one-step synthesis of metal–lead-free perovskite heterostructural nanocrystals by decorating Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 perovskite nanorods with size-controlled Pd nanoclusters via a one-step hot-injection method. The resulting Pd-Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 heteronanorods (HNRs) exhibit strong interfacial electronic coupling, enhanced charge separation, and excellent colloidal stability. Transient absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal a built-in electric field that drives directional electron transfer from the perovskite host to the Pd domains. Under UV irradiation, the Pd-Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl 9 HNRs demonstrate excellent CO 2 photoreduction activity with high CH 4 selectivity, achieving a record apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 2.62% among halide perovskite nanocrystal-based systems with a large electronic yield of 689.3 ± 12.2 µmol·g cat −1 . In situ spectroscopic monitoring and Gibbs free energy analysis further unveil a Pd-facilitated reaction pathway involving stabilization of key intermediates. This work introduces a new class of lead-free perovskite-based heterostructures through a facile one-step synthesis strategy and offers a new design principle for next-generation photocatalysts for solar fuel production.

Clathrate XI K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 : A New Branch on the Clathrate Family Tree

Abstract The compositional screening of K‐Zn‐Sb ternary system aided by machine learning, rapid exploratory synthesis using KH salt‐like precursor and in situ powder X‐ray diffraction yielded a novel clathrate type XI K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 . This clathrate consists of a 3D Zn‐Sb framework hosting K + ions inside polyhedral cages, some of which are reminiscent of known clathrate types while others are unique to this structure type. The complex non‐centrosymmetric structure in the tetragonal space group was solved by means of single crystal X‐ray diffraction as a 6‐component twin due to pseudocubic symmetry and further confirmed by high‐resolution synchrotron powder X‐ray diffraction and state‐of‐the‐art scanning transmission electron microscopy. The electron‐precise composition of this clathrate yields narrow‐gap p ‐type semiconductor with extraordinarily low thermal conductivity due to displacement or “rattling” of K cations inside oversized cages and as well as to twinning, stacking faults and antiphase boundary defects.

The Crucial Role of Sb 2 F 10 in the Chemical Synthesis of F 2

The purely chemical synthesis of fluorine is a spectacular reaction which for more than a century had been believed to be impossible. In 1986, it was finally experimentally achieved, but since then this important reaction has not been further studied and its detailed mechanism had been a mystery. The known thermal stability of MnF 4 casts serious doubts on the originally proposed hypothesis that MnF 4 is thermodynamically unstable and decomposes spontaneously to a lower manganese fluoride and F 2 . This apparent discrepancy has now been resolved experimentally and by electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the reductive elimination of F 2 requires a large excess of SbF 5 and occurs in the last reaction step when in the intermediate [SbF 6 ][MnF 2 ][Sb 2 F 11 ] the addition of one more SbF 5 molecule to the [SbF 6 ] - anion generates a second tridentate [Sb 2 F 11 ] - anion. The two tridentate [Sb 2 F 11 ] - anions then provide six fluorine bridges to the Mn atom thereby facilitating the reductive elimination of the two fluorine ligands as F 2 .

Distinct Composition‐Dependent Topological Hall Effect in Mn 2‐x Zn x Sb

Abstract Spintronics, an evolving interdisciplinary field at the intersection of magnetism and electronics, explores innovative applications of electron charge and spin properties for advanced electronic devices. The topological Hall effect (THE), a key component in spintronics, has gained significance due to emerging theories surrounding noncoplanar chiral spin textures. This study focuses on Mn 2‐x Zn x Sb, a material crystalizing in centrosymmetric space group with rich magnetic phases tunable by Zn contents. Through comprehensive magnetic and transport characterizations, we found that the high‐Zn ( x > 0.6) samples display THE which is enhanced with decreasing temperature, while THE in the low‐Zn ( x < 0.6) samples show an opposite trend. The coexistence of those distinct temperature dependencies for THE suggests very different magnetic interactions/structures for different compositions and underscores the strong coupling between magnetism and transport in Mn 2‐x Zn x Sb. The findings contribute to understanding topological magnetism in centrosymmetric tetragonal lattices, establishing Mn 2‐x Zn x Sb as a unique platform for exploring tunable transport effects and opening avenues for further exploration in the realm of spintronics.

Observation of Topological Spin Textures in Ferrimagnetic Mn 2 − x Zn x Sb

Ferrimagnets, which have both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling, are attracting increased attention in the realm of spintronic devices due to advantages such as ultrafast dynamics and a suppressed skyrmion Hall effect. Thus, understanding the behavior of nontrivial spin textures in ferrimagnets is crucial; however, comprehensive reports on this topic remain limited. Here, the magnetic spin textures of ferrimagnetic Mn 2 − x Zn x Sb (x = 0.85) is explored as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The spin textures can be tuned to a variety of states, including stripes, skyrmion bags, and a skyrmion lattice. Chiral Néel-type magnetic structures are visualized using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Mn(I) ions are slightly shifted toward the Sb sites, which may be due to a strong electrostatic interaction between Mn and Sb ions. This local structural distortion breaks the inversion symmetry and introduces an effective Dzyaloshinkii–Moriya interaction. This work thus provides a pathway to use doping and heterogeneity in a ferrimagnet to control and generate chiral nontrivial spin textures.

Differences in Sb 2 Te 3 growth by pulsed laser and sputter deposition

High quality van der Waals chalcogenides are important for phase change data storage, thermoelectrics, and spintronics. Using a combination of statistical design of experiments and density functional theory, we clarify how out-of-equilibrium van der Waals epitaxial deposition methods can improve the crystal quality of Sb 2 Te 3 films. We compare films grown by radio frequency sputtering and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The growth factors that influence the crystal quality for each method are different. For PLD grown films a thin amorphous Sb 2 Te 3 seed layer most significantly influences the crystal quality. In contrast, the crystalline quality of films grown by sputtering is rather sensitive to the deposition temperature and less affected by the presence of a seed layer. This difference is somewhat surprising as both methods are out-of-thermal-equilibrium plasma-based methods. Non-adiabatic quantum molecular dynamics simulations show that this difference originates from the density of excited atoms in the plasma. The PLD plasma is more intense and with higher energy than that used in sputtering, and this increases the electronic temperature of the deposited atoms, which concomitantly increases the adatom diffusion lengths in PLD. In contrast, the adatom diffusivity is dominated by the thermal temperature for sputter grown films. These results explain the wide range of Sb 2 Te 3 and superlattice crystal qualities observed in the literature. Finally, these results indicate that, contrary to popular belief, plasma-based deposition methods are suitable for growing high quality crystalline chalcogenides.

A record high average ZT over a wide temperature range in a Single-layer Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6

Conversion of waste heat into usable energy requires development of thermoelectric materials with high efficiency in a wide temperature range. Here, using first principles theory and Boltzmann transport theory, we show that the thermoelectric performance of the p-type single-layer Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 has a high figure of merit ZT of 2.62 at 900 K and a record high average ZT of ~1.93 (corresponding the conversion efficiency of ~23.2%) in the temperature range of 300-900 K. These values are significantly higher than the recently measured average ZT of ~0.57 in the temperature range of 310–823 K [Luo et al., Joule 4, 159–175 (2020)] in layered bulk Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 . We attribute the large enhancement of ZT in the single layer material to the increase in the thermoelectric power factor resulting from the complex Fermi surface. Our work reveals the great potential of a single-layer Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 for wide-temperature-range thermoelectric applications.

Tunable structural and magnetic properties of NiAs-type Mn x Sb (1.00≤x≤1.30) compounds

Mn-based alloys can exhibit a variety of magnetic properties related to their tunable exchange interactions. Here, structural and magnetic properties of hexagonal NiAs-type Mn x Sb (1.00≤x≤1.30) compounds are studied with a combination of X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and magnetic measurements. It is found that the magnetization, Curie temperature, and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Mn x Sb compounds can be tuned by controlling Mn concentration and doping at interstitial (2d) sites. With increasing Mn concentration, magnetic moments of Mn atoms decrease and deviate gradually from the ab-plane to the c-axis for 1.20≤x≤1.22 at room temperature, which leads to a decrease of the Curie temperature T c and the spin reorientation temperature T SR . By doping with nonmagnetic elements, a substantial room-temperature magnetocaloric effect without magnetic hysteresis was achieved for Mn 1.12 Zr 0.1 Sb compound, which is highly beneficial to the practical magnetic refrigeration application.

Physical origins of the varying performance and unusual transport behaviors among thermoelectric A Mg 2 Sb 2 materials ( A = Ca, Sr, Sm, Yb, and Mg)

Contrary to the similar thermoelectric performance among both AZn 2 Sb 2 and AMg 2 Bi 2 compounds, their isostructural counterparts, AMg 2 Sb 2 , can exhibit thermoelectric figure of merit values that vary by orders of magnitude with different A elements. Here, we reveal physical origins accounting for the significantly differing performance among AMg 2 Sb 2 -based compounds (A = Ca, Sr, Sm, Yb, and Mg) through comprehensive analyses, where it is shown that the dispar- ities in performance at the macroscale essentially originate from the widely varying activation energies that equal amounts of dopant can induce. Meanwhile, a few unusual transport behaviors regarding electrical conductivity, carrier concentration, or lattice thermal con- ductivity among these compounds have been identified, and we also present their rationales in depth. Furthermore, this mechanism-focused study can not only promote further understanding of the complex transport behaviors in condensed matter but be instrumental in rationally tun- ing the physical properties of materials as well.

Extended defects in GaAs/GaAs 1-x Sb x /GaAs (001) heterostructures

The atomic-scale structure of extended defects in GaAs/GaAs 1-x Sb x /GaAs (001) heterostructures has been characterized using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. The defect located at the tensile-strained GaAs(cap)/GaAs 0.34 Sb 0.66 interface had no edge component in the projection plane and is identified as either a dissociated screw dislocation or a partial dislocation dipole. The associated intrinsic stacking fault is bounded by two 30° Shockley partial dislocations of opposite sign. Another defect, located at the compressively-strained GaAs 0.91 Sb 0.09 /GaAs(substrate) interface, is identified as a dissociated 90° dislocation. The associated intrinsic stacking fault is bounded by a 30° Shockley partial dislocation and a partial dislocation with a Burgers vector of either or , where a is the lattice constant. Unpaired atomic columns observed at the cores of the 30° Shockley partial dislocations indicate that both defects belong primarily to the glide set.

A review of Sb 2 Se 3 photovoltaic absorber materials and thin-film solar cells

Energy generated from environmentally friendly, cost-effective solar cells is a key aspect for developing a clean renewable-energy economy. Non-toxic and Earth-abundant materials with high absorption coefficient (>10 5 cm -1 ) and optimal bandgap (1-1.5 eV) have received great attention as photovoltaic (PV) absorber layers during the last few decades. Among them, antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) has been a promising PV absorber, with steadily increasing power-conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to other emerging compounds. Very recent studies showed that high-quality ZnO:Al/ZnO/CdS/TiO 2 /Sb 2 Se 3 /MoSe 2 /Mo devices with PCE of 9.2% can be fabricated using cost-effective novel compounds. Considering these recent advances, this article provides an overview of the material properties of Sb2Se3 thin films and the recent progress made with Sb 2 Se 3 -based solar cells. Furthermore, analysis of Sb 2 Se 3 -based thin-film solar cells has also shown that the devices have relatively good light management due to their suitable bandgap and high absorption coefficient, whereas carrier management, i.e. collection efficiency of photo-generated carriers, needs significant improvement. Overall, this study provides background knowledge on material properties and device performance and suggests main research directions to overcome the limiting factors of solar cell performance.

Discovery of Ternary Antimonides A–Al–Sb (A = Rb or Cs) with Desired Structural Motifs Guided by Machine Learning

Specific structural motifs in inorganic solids are often related to their targeted physical properties. For many classes of solids, such as Zintl phases and polar intermetallics, the crystal structures are diverse and not easy to predict. Various antimonides that are potential thermoelectric materials were proposed to be synthesizable on the basis of their estimated formation energies. Their structures were broadly classified as clathrate, channel, layered, or network through a machine learning model trained on existing ternary phases and features based on elemental properties using the sure independence screening and sparsifying operator algorithm. Through experimental validation, three new ternary antimonides were synthesized and confirmed to form layered structures: tetragonal RbAlSb 2 and CsAlSb 2 , which are isopointal but not isotypic to LiBSi 2 ; and monoclinic Rb 2 Al 2 Sb 3 , which adopts the Na 2 Al 2 Sb 3 -type structure. Finally, reinvestigation of the related compound Cs 2 In 2 Sb 3 revealed a low thermal conductivity and p-type semiconducting behavior.

Interplay of Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Eu 5.08-x Sr x Al 3 Sb 6 Solid Solution

Zintl phases containing rare-earth metals have gained attention due to their magnetic, electronic, and thermoelectric properties. Eu 5.08 Al 3 Sb 6 is a new structure type (monoclinic space group C2/m) that can be described as a pseudorock-salt EuSb motif with the Eu-centered Sb octahedra at the origin of the unit cell, and on the C-face center, containing either Eu (8%) or an Al 4 tetrahedron modeled as a dual tetrahedron (37.5%). The complete solid solution of Eu 5.08–x Sr x Al 3 Sb 6 can be prepared; however, the cation totals vacillate from 5 to 5.24 depending on the Al content. Al K-edge XANES shows a shift to higher energy relative to the Al metal but at slightly lower energy relative to AlSb, indicating an intermediate oxidation state closer to +3 than 0. The lack of an Al K-edge shift with the incorporation of Sr suggests that changes in Sr content do not have a meaningful impact on the electronics of the Al tetrahedra. Investigation of the solid solution structures provides evidence for classifying this structure type as a polar intermetallic phase with variable composition. Magnetization measurements were collected for the solid solution and show complex magnetic ordering with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions as the Sr content increases.

Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 and Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O: Wide Band Gap 0D Metal Halide Semiconductors

Herein, we report the discovery, structural and photophysical characterization of a new zero-dimensional (0D) lead-free all-inorganic halide, Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 , which adopts a new structure type. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) shows that the structure consists of isolated, distorted seesaw [SbCl 4 ] − and trigonal planar [CuCl 3 ] 2− units, separated by Rb + cations that provide charge balance. Optoelectronic measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate an indirect band gap of 2.89 eV, making it a candidate for wide-bandgap optoelectronic applications. Electrical resistivity was measured at 1.29 × 10 10 Ω·cm, and the trap-state density (n trap ) was found to be 7.44 × 10 10 cm −3 . Attempts to synthesize substitution analogs of Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 led to the synthesis of Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O, which was erroneously reported as Rb 2 SbCl 5 O in a previous study. Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O adopts a vacancyordered perovskite structure and exhibits broad-band yellow emission under UV excitation. The measured photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for Rb 2 In 0.91 (0.2)Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O is 18.2%. These findings add to the growing class of quaternary metal halides with multiple cation and anion compositions, expanding the chemical phase space for the discovery of new materials with functional properties.

Human TRPV1 structure and inhibition by the analgesic SB-366791

Pain therapy has remained conceptually stagnant since the opioid crisis, which highlighted the dangers of treating pain with opioids. An alternative addiction-free strategy to conventional painkiller-based treatment is targeting receptors at the origin of the pain pathway, such as transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels. Thus, a founding member of the vanilloid subfamily of TRP channels, TRPV1, represents one of the most sought-after pain therapy targets. The need for selective TRPV1 inhibitors extends beyond pain treatment, to other diseases associated with this channel, including psychiatric disorders. Here we report the cryo-electron microscopy structures of human TRPV1 in the apo state and in complex with the TRPV1-specific nanomolar-affinity analgesic antagonist SB-366791. SB-366791 binds to the vanilloid site and acts as an allosteric hTRPV1 inhibitor. SB-366791 binding site is supported by mutagenesis combined with electrophysiological recordings and can be further explored to design new drugs targeting TRPV1 in disease conditions.
