The quadrupole ionosphere

The principal features that might exist in the terrestrial paleoionosphere, if the geomagnetic field were to assume a quadrupole form during a polarity reversal are discussed. Complicated phenomena would be expected to occur at magnetic equators and magnetospherically-driven plasma convection might occur at latitudes where the magnetic field is steeply inclined. The influence of magnetic field strength on ionospheric structure is considered in general terms.

The ortho-para H2 distribution on Uranus: Constraints from the collision-induced 3-0 dipole band and 4-0 S(0) and S(1) quadrupole line profiles

Recent high quality spectral observations have allowed the derivation of constraints on the atmospheric structure of Uranus. The present analysis, which is based on the detailed modeling of a broadband geometric albedo spectrum and high resolution observations of the H2 4-0 quadrupole and 6818.9-A CH4 features, yields (1) a family of models which parameterize an upper tropospheric haze layer, (2) a lower, optically infinite cloud at a given pressure level, (3) the cloud-level methane molar fraction, and (4) the mean ortho/para ratio in the visible atmosphere. The single scattering albedo of atmospheric aerosols exhibits a steep darkening between 5890 and 6040 A.

Quadrupole mass spectrometer for Space Shuttle applications - Flight capabilities and ground calibration

The AFGL Quadrupole Ion/Neutral Mass Spectrometer (QINMS), its flight capabilities, and a few examples of QINMS data from the STS-4 flight are discussed in addition to the beam facility and calibration procedures used at the Los Alamos National Laboratory facility. A 5-eV atomic oxygen beam is produced using a continuous optical discharge technique, and the resulting pumped beam has sufficient high flux and velocity to simulate orbital conditions. The calibrated instrument will be used in the NASA Johnson Space Center Evaluation of Oxygen Interactions with Materials experiment to measure the density of ambient oxygen and to identify the products of oxygen-surface reactions.

Uranus' (3-0) H2 quadrupole line profiles

Spectra of Uranus' S3(0) and S3(1) H2 quadrupole lines, obtained during the 1978-1980 apparitions, are analyzed, and are found to require the presence of a deep cloud. Modifications of the Baines and Bergstralh (1986) standard model, including an additional haze layer above the 16-km-am H2 level which contains strongly absorbing particles, are needed to fit the observations. For a Rayleigh phase function, such a haze (uniformly mixed with the gas above this level) would have an absorption optical depth of 0.16 and a single scattering particle albedo of 0.30. This modification would imply a fraction of normal H2 equal to 0.25 + or - 0.10, in agreement with the Baines and Bergstralh standard model.

Research relative to an advanced rod control system for quadrupole mass spectrometry applications

The design of a suitable amplifier output stage using available transistors and passive components is summarized. All of the analysis and calculation confirm that it is feasible to design the amplifier and quadrupole coupling circuit needed for the Advanced Rod Control System. The progress obtained so far concerning the three frequency tank circuits to be used in the oscillator for the mass spectrometer of the Cometary Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby (CRAF) project is presented. Results from this study look promising. However, it is not known what minimum impedance levels are required to make it possible for the oscillator to work properly. Therefore, it is necessary to construct a prototype circuit in the laboratory which can be measured and tested in an oscillator circuit. Continued attempts will be made to develop a useful inductor motor with better characteristics than the one being used at the moment. It is important that such a model be found if computer simulation is to reflect reality more closely.

A possible detection of Jupiter's northern auroral S1(1) H2 quadrupole line emission

An upper limit is presently determined for the mean intensity of the Jupiter northern Auroral UV/thermal hot spot's S1(1) H2 quadrupole emission, over an 8 sq arcsec illuminated beam; the value obtained is 4.2 X 10 to the -6th W/sq m per sr. It is suggested that the nonradiative deexitation of the H2 molecules via collisions with H may have been underestimated by Kim and Maguire (1986), due to uncertainties concerning auroral H density.

Development of a quadrupole-based Secondary-Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) system at Lewis Research Center

The design, construction, and initial use of an ion microprobe to carry out secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) of solid samples is reported. The system is composed of a differentially pumped custom-made UHV (Ultra High Vacuum) chamber, a quadrupole mass spectrometer and a telefocus A-DIDA ion gun with the capability of producing beams of Cesium, as well as inert and reactive gases. The computer control and acquisition of the data were designed and implemented using a personal computer with plug-in boards, and external circuitry built as required to suit the system needs. The software is being developed by using a FORTH-like language. Initial tests aimed at characterizing the system, as well as preliminary surface and depth-profiling studies are presently underway.

Dynamics of charged particles in a Paul radio-frequency quadrupole trap

A molecular-dynamics simulation of hundreds of ions confined in a Paul trap has been performed. The simulation includes the trapped particles' micromotion and interparticle Coulomb interactions. A random walk in velocity was implemented to bring the secular motion to a given temperature which was numerically measured. When the coupling Gamma is large the ions from concentric shells which undergo a quadrupole oscillation at the RF frequency, while the ions within a shell form a 2D hexagonal lattice. Ion clouds at 5 mK show no RF heating for q(z) less than about 0.6, whereas rapid heating is seen for qz = 0.8.

Determination of absolute strengths of N2 quadrupole lines from high-resolution ground-based IR solar observations

The strength of S-branch lines of the N2 (1-0) electric quadrupole vibration-rotation band are determined by an analysis of solar absorption spectra. The solar data were recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer and are characterized by high resolution, and a high signal-to-noise ratio. By extrapolating equivalent width measurements of the lines from varying air masses to zero air mass, the line strengths are found for the transitions from S7 to S10. The results presented do not include half widths and are found to be accurate to within 5 percent, and following a redetermination the N2 transitions are accurate to within 0.0002/cm. Line-of-sight atmospheric air masses associated with remotely sensed IR spectroscopic observations can be determined directly by utilizing the highly accurate data.

The fundamental quadrupole band of (N-14)2 - Line positions from high-resolution stratospheric solar absorption spectra

Accurate measurements of the positions of O- and S-branch lines of the (1-0) vibration-rotation quadrupole band of molecular nitrogen (N-14)2 are reported. Improved Dunham coefficients were derived from a simultaneous least squares analysis of these measurements and selected infrared and far infrared data. The new measurements were performed using stratospheric solar occultation spectra recorded with Fourier transform spectrometer instruments, operated at unapodized spectral resolutions of 0.002 and 0.01/cm.

Joint and angle-covariant spin measurements with a quadrupole magnetic field

We study a Stern-Gerlach type setup, with a quadrupole magnetic field, for neutral particles of arbitrary spin. The Hamiltonian is of a form proposed for joint measurements of the incompatible observables. The measurement results are discussed, showing the limitation of such Hamiltonians. Some remarks are made on the relevance of covariance as a criterion for measurement schemes.

A Quadrupole Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer for Quantitative Analysis of Nitrogen-Purged Compartments within the Space Shuttle

To enter orbit, the Space Shuttle burns 1.8 million liters of liquid hydrogen combined with 0.8 million liters of liquid oxygen through three rocket engines mounted in the aft. NASA monitors the nitrogen-purged aft compartment for increased levels of hydrogen or oxygen in order to detect and determine the severity of a cryogenic fuel leak. Current monitoring is accomplished with a group of mass spectrometer systems located as much as 400 feet away from the Shuttle. It can take up to 45 seconds for gas to reach the mass spectrometer, which precludes monitoring for leaks in the final moments before liftoff (the orbiter engines are started at T-00:06 seconds). To remedy the situation, NASA is developing a small rugged mass spectrometer to be used as point-sensors around the Space Shuttle. As part of this project, numerous mass analyzer technologies are being investigated. Presented here are the preliminary results for one such technology, quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry (QITMS). A compact QITMS system has been developed in-house at the University of Florida for monitoring trace levels of four primary gases, hydrogen, helium, oxygen, and argon, all in a nitrogen background. Since commercially available QITMS systems are incapable of mass analysis at m/z(exp 2), the home-built system is preferred for the evaluation of QITMS technology.

Real-Time Quantitative Analysis of H2, He, O2, and Ar by Quadrupole Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry

The use of a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer for quantitative analysis of hydrogen and helium as well as other permanent gases is demonstrated. The customized instrument utilizes the mass selective instability mode of mass analysis as with commercial instruments; however, this instrument operates at a greater RF trapping frequency and without a buffer gas. With these differences, a useable mass range from 2 to over 50 Da is achieved, as required by NASA for monitoring the Space Shuttle during a launch countdown. The performance of the ion trap is evaluated using part-per-million concentrations of hydrogen, helium, oxygen and argon mixed into a nitrogen gas stream. Relative accuracy and precision when quantitating the four analytes were better than the NASA-required minimum of 10% error and 5% deviation, respectively. Limits of detection were below the NASA requirement of 25-ppm hydrogen and 100-ppm helium; those for oxygen and argon were slightly higher than the requirement. The instrument provided adequate performance at fast data recording rates, demonstrating the utility of an ion trap mass spectrometer as a real-time quantitative monitoring device for permanent gas analysis.

Miniaturized GC/MS instrumentation for in situ measurements: micro gas chromatography coupled with miniature quadrupole array and paul ion trap mass spectrometers

Miniaturized chemical instrumentation is needed for in situ measurements in planetary exploration and other spaceflight applications where factors such as reduction in payload requirements and enhanced robustness are important. In response to this need, we are 'continuing to develop miniaturized GC/MS instrumentation which combines chemical separations by gas chromatography (GC) with mass spectrometry (MS) to provide positive identification of chemical compounds in complex mixtures of gases, such as those found in the International Space Station's cabin atmosphere. Our design approach utilizes micro gas chromatography components coupled with either a miniature quadrupole mass spectrometer array (QMSA) or compact, high-resolution Paul ion trap.

Driving a quadrupole mass spectrometer via an isolating stage

Driving a quadrupole mass spectrometer includes obtaining an air core transformer with a primary and a secondary, matching the secondary to the mass spectrometer, and driving the primary based on first and second voltage levels. Driving of the primary is via an isolating stage that minimizes low level drive signal coupling.
