Development of electronic circuit for combining input signals on two separate antennas to form two processed signals
The equations of motion of a geodetic satellite in the earth's gravitational field expressed by gravity anomalies require the evaluation, amongst others, of the partial derivatives of the disturbing force with respect to individual gravity anomalies. Data are discussed on how anomaly blocks should be subdivided so that the partial derivatives may be numerically evaluated for each subdivision, and then finally meaned to give the value representative of the whole blocks, with accuracies better than 2 to 3 percent for all blocks. The number of subdivisions is large for the blocks nearest to the satellite subpoint and decreases away from it. The actual values of this spherical distance and the actual subdivision of the mean gravity anomaly blocks was determined numerically for 184 15 deg x 15 deg equal area blocks. Satellite heights above the earth of 400 km, 800 km and 1600 km were considered. The computer times for the suggested scheme were compared with alternative solutions.
This paper examines the performance of coherent QPSK and QASK systems combined with FH or FH/PN spread spectrum techniques in the presence of partial-band multitone or noise jamming. The worst-case jammer and worst-case performance are determined as functions of the signal-to-background noise ratio (SNR) and signal-to-jammer power ratio (SJR). Asymptotic results for high SNR are shown to have a linear dependence between the jammer's optimal power allocation and the system error probability performance.
IUE high-dispersion, far-UV spectra of the active-chromosphere RS CVn binary HR 1099 are reported. The emission features produced by such high-temperature species as C II and C IV are found to be very bright, to exhibit structure, change significantly in the one-week interval separating the two exposures, and generally follow the radial velocity motion of the K subgiant primary, while the less massive G dwarf secondary appears only weakly in the composite spectrum. It is concluded that chromospheric and transition region emission in RS CVn binaries is a stellar rather than system phenomenon, and the structure evident in some of the emission line shapes is interpreted as a patchy brightness distribution on and above the K star surface that is spread out in velocity by the rapid rotation.
An image pyramid has been developed with basis functions that are orthogonal, self-similar, and localized in space, spatial frequency, orientation, and phase. The pyramid operates on a hexagonal sample lattice. The set of seven basis functions consist of three even high-pass kernels, three odd high-pass kernels, and one low-pass kernel. The three even kernels are identified when rotated by 60 or 120 deg, and likewise for the odd. The seven basis functions occupy a point and a hexagon of six nearest neighbors on a hexagonal sample lattice. At the lowest level of the pyramid, the input lattice is the image sample lattice. At each higher level, the input lattice is provided by the low-pass coefficients computed at the previous level. At each level, the output is subsampled in such a way as to yield a new hexagonal lattice with a spacing sq rt 7 larger than the previous level, so that the number of coefficients is reduced by a factor of 7 at each level. The relationship between this image code and the processing architecture of the primate visual cortex is discussed.
Transmission measurements made on near-infrared laboratory methane spectra have previously been fit using a Malkmus band model. The laboratory spectra were obtained in three groups at temperatures averaging 112, 188, and 295 K; band model fitting was done separately for each temperature group. These band model parameters cannot be used directly in scattering atmosphere model computations, so an exponential sum model is being developed which includes pressure and temperature fitting parameters. The goal is to obtain model parameters by least square fits at 10/cm intervals from 3800 to 9100/cm. These results will be useful in the interpretation of current planetary spectra and also NIMS spectra of Jupiter anticipated from the Galileo mission.
A sub-filter model for reactive flows, namely the DQMOM model, was formulated for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) using the filtered mass density function. Transport equations required to determine the location and size of the delta-peaks were then formulated for a 2-peak decomposition of the FDF. The DQMOM scheme was implemented in an existing structured-grid LES solver. Simulations of scalar shear layer using an experimental configuration showed that the first and second moments of both reactive and inert scalars are in good agreement with a conventional Lagrangian scheme that evolves the same FDF. Comparisons with LES simulations performed using laminar chemistry assumption for the reactive scalar show that the new method provides vast improvements at minimal computational cost. Currently, the DQMOM model is being implemented for use with the progress variable/mixture fraction model of Pierce. Comparisons with experimental results and LES simulations using a single-environment for the progress-variable are planned. Future studies will aim at understanding the effect of increase in environments on predictions.
A new technique of rotation shearing interferometry has been developed, which is optimized to reduce systematic problems when imaging through turbulence.
