Adsorption Properties of Au−Ni Surface Alloys with a Nonstoichiometric Moiré Structure: A Density Functional Theory Study

Due to the large lattice mismatch between gold and nickel, gold–nickel surface alloys can form unique nonstoichiometric overlayer structures characterized by a moiré pattern and subsurface defects. For this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the adsorption of molecular oxygen, atomic hydrogen, and atomic carbon on a gold–nickel(111) surface alloy with 0.46 monolayer gold randomly distributed in the surface layer. We observed six distinct adsorption structures for molecular oxygen characterized by intramolecular stretching frequencies of <700, 729, 795, 857, 929, and 1004 cm –1 , which describe well the experimentally observed high-resolution electron energy-loss spectra. Surface atomic hydrogen adsorption is associated with adsorbate–surface modes in the ∼1000 cm –1 range, while subsurface hydrogen can have features as low as ∼400 cm –1 . We observed a unique adsorption structure for atomic carbon inside the surface dislocation loop defect, which explains the experimentally observed low carbon-surface mode at ∼340 cm –1 . Our study sheds light on the unique adsorption properties of the gold–nickel surface alloys and helps with rationalizing vibrational frequency experimental studies for this system.

Effect of Graft Molecular Weight and Density on the Mechanical Properties of Polystyrene-Grafted Cellulose Nanocrystal Films

In this work, polymer-grafted nanoparticle (PGN) films were prepared from polystyrene (PS) grafted to rodlike cellulose nanocrystals (MxG-CNC-g-PS) with a controllable grafting density (0.03–0.25 chains/nm 2 ) and molecular weight (5–60 kg/mol). These nanorod-based PGNs are solution- and melt-processible, permitting access to one-component composite films with high nanofiller loadings (with up to 55 wt %). The impact of both grafted polymer density and molecular weight on the mechanical properties of the films was investigated and related to the polymer brush conformation: concentrated polymer brush (CPB), semidilute polymer brush (SDPB), or CPB core with SDPB corona (CPB/SDPB). The rubbery regime storage modulus (above $T_g$) showed 2 orders of magnitude increase, maximizing at a low degree of polymerization (N) and low grafting density (σ). Fracture toughness was maximized in samples with the grafted polymer in the SDPB or CPD/SDPB (higher N and relatively low σ) regime and showed enhancement relative to PS of molecular weight similar to the graft. In line with prior computation predictions, optimizing for both rubbery modulus and fracture toughness in such nanorod-based PGN films requires the polymers in the SDPB regime and CNC loading levels (ca. 50–60 wt %) that are difficult to attain in more traditional two-component CNC composites.

Synthesis, Magnetic Properties, and Electronic Structure of Magnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Se 4

The intrinsic magnetic topological insulators MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 2 Se 4 support novel topological states related to symmetry breaking by magnetic order. Unlike MnBi 2 Te 4 , the study of MnBi 2 Se 4 has been inhibited by the lack of bulk crystals, as the van der Waals (vdW) crystal is not the thermodynamic equilibrium phase. In this study, we report the layer-by-layer synthesis of vdW MnBi 2 Se 4 crystals using nonequilibrium molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy identify a well-ordered vdW crystal with septuple-layer base units. The magnetic properties agree with the predicted layered antiferromagnetic ordering but disagree with its predicted out-of-plane orientation. Instead, our samples exhibit an easy-plane anisotropy, which is explained by including dipole–dipole interactions. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals the gapless Dirac-like surface state, which demonstrates that MnBi 2 Se 4 is a topological insulator above the magnetic-ordering temperature. These studies show that MnBi 2 Se 4 is a promising candidate for exploring rich topological phases of layered antiferromagnetic topological insulators.

Reversible Oxidation Quantified by Optical Properties in Epitaxial Fe2CrO4+d Films on (001) MgAl2O4

We report on the structural and optical properties of Fe2CrO4+d epitaxial films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on MgAl2O4 (001) as a function of ?. The average Fe valence can be correlated with the out-of-plane lattice parameter and the extent of light absorption in the infrared spectral region. Over-oxidized films (0 < d < 0.5) exhibit reduced lattice parameters and suppressed infrared absorption. We discuss the behavior of a novel infrared transition at ~0.6 eV in stoichiometric Fe2CrO4 films deposited on MgAl2O4 (MAO) at or above 400 °C. This research provides new insight into the atomic structure, optical processes, oxidation states, electronic structure, and application potentials of Fe2CrO4+d.

Presynthetic Redox Gated Metal-to-Insulator Transition and Photothermoelectric Properties in Nickel Tetrathiafulvalene-Tetrathiolate Coordination Polymers

Photothermoelectric (PTE) materials are promising candidates for solar energy harvesting and photodetection applications, especially for near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Although the processability and tunability of organic materials are highly advantageous, examples of organic PTE materials are comparatively rare and their PTE performance is typically limited by poor photothermal (PT) conversion. Here, we report the use of redox-active Sn complexes of tetrathiafulvalene-tetrathiolate (TTFtt) as transmetalating agents for the synthesis of presynthetically redox tuned NiTTFtt materials. Unlike the neutral material NiTTFtt, which exhibits n-type glassy-metallic conductivity, the reduced materials Li 1.2 Ni 0.4 [NiTTFtt] and [Li(THF) 1.5 ] 1.2 Ni 0.4 [NiTTFtt] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) display physical characteristics more consistent with p-type semiconductors. The broad spectral absorption and electrically conducting nature of these TTFtt-based materials enable highly efficient NIR-thermal conversion and good PTE performance. Furthermore, in contrast to conventional PTE composites, these NiTTFtt coordination polymers are notable as single-component PTE materials. As a result, the presynthetically tuned metal-to-insulator transition in these NiTTFtt systems directly modulates their PT and PTE properties.

Structural disorder, sublattice melting, and thermo-elastic properties of anti-perovskite Li 3 OBr under high pressure and temperature

Here, in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments were conducted in the system Li-O-Br at pressures up to 6.5 GPa and temperatures up to the melting points. The thermal equation of state determined from the P–V–T measurements indicates that crystalline anti-perovskite Li 3 OBr exhibits similar thermo-elastic properties to common salts. At temperatures that are 50–75 °C below the crystal melting, a pre-melting behavior was inferred based on weakened Bragg intensity and a substantial increase in the diffuse scattering. Concurrent with the onset of pre-melting, an anomalous increase in the lattice volume was observed and is interpreted as anion sublattice disorder. These findings support previous ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on a simple anion interchange mechanism, indicating that structural disorder below crystal melting temperature can be a main driving force for Li-sublattice melting and superionic transition in the Li 3 OBr anti-perovskite.

Probing the electronic properties of the electrified silicon/water interface by combining simulations and experiments.

Silicon (Si) is broadly used in electrochemical and photoelectrochemical devices, where the capacitive and Faradaic reactions at the Si/water interfaces are critical for signal transduction or noise generation. However, probing the electrified Si/water interface at the microscopic level remains a challenging task. Here we focus on hydrogenated Si surfaces in contact with water, relevant to transient electronics and photoelectrochemical modulation of biological cells and tissues. We show that by carrying out first principles molecular dynamics simulations of the Si(100)/water interface in the presence of an electric field we can realistically correlate the computed flat-band potential and tunneling current images at the interface with experimentally measured capacitive and Faradaic currents. Specifically, we validate our simulations in the presence of bias by performing pulsed chronoamperometry measurements on Si wafers in solution. Consistent with prior experiments, our measurements and simulations indicate the presence of voltage-dependent capacitive currents at the interface. We also find that Faradaic currents are weakly dependent on the applied bias, which we relate to surface defects present in newly prepared samples.

Chiral properties of the zero-field spiral state and field-induced magnetic phases of the itinerant kagome metal YMn 6 Sn 6

Applying a magnetic field in the hexagonal plane of YMn 6 Sn 6 leads to a complex magnetic phase diagram of commensurate and incommensurate phases, one of which coexists with the topological Hall effect (THE) generated by a unique fluctuation-driven mechanism. Using unpolarized neutron diffraction, we report on the solved magnetic structure for two previously identified, but unknown, commensurate phases. These include a low-temperature, high-field fanlike phase and a room-temperature, low-field canted antiferromagnetic phase. Here, an intermediate incommensurate phase between the fanlike and forced ferromagnetic phases is also identified as the last known phase of the in-plane field-temperature diagram. Additional characterization using synchrotron powder diffraction reveals extremely high-quality, single-phase crystals, which suggests that the presence of two incommensurate magnetic structures throughout much of the phase diagram is an intrinsic property of the system. Interestingly, polarized neutron diffraction shows that the centrosymmetric system hosts preferential chirality in the zero-field double-flat-spiral phase, which, along with the THE, is a topologically nontrivial characteristic.

Scalar Field Comparison with Topological Descriptors: Properties and Applications for Scientific Visualization

In topological data analysis and visualization, topological descriptors such as persistence diagrams, merge trees, contour trees, Reeb graphs, and Morse–Smale complexes play an essential role in capturing the shape of scalar field data. Herein we present a state–of–the–art report on scalar field comparison using topological descriptors. We provide a taxonomy of existing approaches based on visualization tasks associated with three categories of data: single fields, time–varying fields, and ensembles. These tasks include symmetry detection, periodicity detection, key event/feature detection, feature tracking, clustering, and structure statistics. Our main contributions include the formulation of a set of desirable mathematical and computational properties of comparative measures, and the classification of visualization tasks and applications that are enabled by these measures.

The Physical Properties of Low-redshift FeLoBAL Quasars. II. The Rest-frame Optical Emission Line Properties

We report the results of an analysis of the Hβ emission line region of a sample of 30 low-redshift (z < 1) iron low-ionization broad absorption line quasars (FeLoBALQs). Eleven of these objects are newly classified as FeLoBALQs. A matched sample of 132 unabsorbed quasars was analyzed in parallel. The emission lines showed the well-known anticorrelation between the [O III ] and Fe II emission. Using a summary statistic called E1 to quantify this anticorrelation, we found that while the distribution of E1 for the unabsorbed quasars has a single peak, the FeLoBALQs have a bimodal shape in this parameter. Previous studies have shown that the line emission properties of BAL and non-BALQs are consistent; therefore, the difference in the Hβ region emission between FeLoBALQs and unabsorbed quasars is a new result. The two populations of FeLoBALQs are characterized by low and high bolometric luminosities and Eddington ratios. Some previous studies have suggested that BALQs are high accretion rate objects and therefore the discovery of the low accretion rate branch of FeLoBAL quasars was unexpected. We also found that the Hβ FWHM is systematically broader among the FeLoBALQs, implying a higher inclination viewing angle or a dearth of low velocity line emitting gas.

Investigation of the \(\gamma \)-ray Properties of the \(2^+\) States in \(^{14}\)C

The properties of the 2$^+_1$ and 2$^+_2$ excited states in 14 C were studied in an experiment conducted at Argonne National Laboratory. A 9 Be( 6 Li,pγ) fusion-evaporation reaction and the GRETINA-ORRUBA setup were employed to populate states of 14 C and detect γ-particle coincidence events. Finally, the precise determination of the 2$^+_1$ level energy, complemented by the estimation of the γ-ray branch of the 2$^+_2$ near-threshold state, will serve as a benchmark to test the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum calculations.
