Investigation of contact metallization systems for solar cells

In conventional solar cells, evaporated Ti-Pd-Ag metallization system has been found reliable. However, for low cost terrestrial applications, its cost effectiveness may be questioned. Electroplated Ag and Cu have been investigated as replacements for evaporated Ag and have given results comparable to the evaporated Ti-Pd-Ag system.

Trace elements in ocean ridge basalt glasses - Implications for fractionations during mantle evolution and petrogenesis

Seven documented and fresh glassy selvages from ocean floor basalt pillows were analyzed for trace elements including Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Ni, Pd, and Zn using radiochemical activation analysis. Glasses from DSDP leg 24, site 238 in the Indian Ocean have a trace element pattern which reflects secondary processes at a shallow depth. Chemical fractionations in petrogenesis of tholeiitic basalts indicate that (Ir, Os), Au, Pd, Ni, and Re are strongly fractionated in igneous processes; the unfractionated chondritic mantle pattern thus imposes constraints on mantle evolution models. Finally, the limited Rb/Cs fractionation in oceanic tholeiites reflects the low abundance of volatiles and hydrous silicates in normal ocean ridge basalts.

UHV studies of the interaction of CO with small supported metal particles, Pd/mica

The interaction of carbon monoxide with small palladium particles supported on UHV-cleaved and heat-treated single-crystal mica was studied. The Pd particles were characterized and tested using the techniques of flash thermal desorption, Auger electron spectroscopy, core electron energy loss spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Evidence is presented for CO decomposition on Pd particles during CO adsorption-desorption experiments. The rate of CO decomposition increased rapidly with diminishing particle size. Residual carbon from CO decomposition blocked CO adsorption and had a strong poisoning effect on the CO oxidation reaction.

Use of phytochrome-dependent reaction in evaluating the effect of space flight factors on the plant organism

The effects of space flight factors on lettuce seeds aboard the Kosmos-936 and Kosmos-1129 satellites for 20 days were studied. The phytochrome dependent (PD) reaction of light sensitive seeds was a sensitive criterion for evaluating the biological effects of space flight factors. The PD reaction of air dry lettuce seeds was suppressed after space flight, especially if the seeds were exposed to open space during the flight. Space flight affects the physiological activity of both phytochrome forms, and both the phi sub 730 dependent reactions of lettuce seeds were suppressed.

Quenched magnetite in cretaceous-tertiary boundary microtekite-like spheroid

The magnetite containing spheres collected from a kt boundary localities in Italy were analyzed. It was found that these spheres contain relatively high concentrations of Ir. The spheres were analyzed for siderophile elements Ir, Pt, Au, Pd, Os, and Re. Elements Ir, Pt, Pd, and Au were found in high concentrations in magnetic spheres and their concentrations are similar to those in most meteorites. It is suggested that the magnetite spheres do not contain a meteorite component which may be a relic of the kt event.

Positive displacement compounding of a heavy duty diesel engine

A helical screw type positive displacement (PD) compressor and expander was considered as an alternative to the turbocharger and the power turbine in the Cummins advanced turbocompound engine. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) completed the design, layout, and performance prediction of the PD machines. The results indicate that a screw compressor-expander system is feasible up to at least 750 HP, dry operation of the rotors is feasible, cost and producibility are uncertain, and the system will yield about 4% improvement in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) over the advanced turbocompound engine.

Structural characterizaiton and gas reactions of small metal particles by high-resolution, in-situ TEM and TED

The existing in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) facility was improved by adding a separately pumped mini-specimen chamber. The chamber contains wire-evaporation sources for three metals and a specimen heater for moderate substrate temperatures. A sample introduction device was constructed, installed, and tested, facilitating rapid introduction of a specimen into the mini-chamber while maintaining the background pressure in that chamber in the 10(-9) millibar range. Small particles and clusters of Pd, grown by deposition from the vapor phase in an in-situ TEM facility on amorphous and crystalline support films of alumina and on ultra-thin carbon films, were analyzed by conventional high-resolution TEM and image analysis in terms of detectability, number density, and size distribution. The smallest particles that could be detected and counted contained no more than 6 atoms; size determinations could be made for particles 1 nm in diameter. The influence of various oxygen plasma treatments, annealing treatments, and of increasing the substrate temperature during deposition was investigated. The TEM technique was employed to demonstrate that under otherwise identica l conditions the lattice parameter of Pd particles in the 1 to 2 nm size range and supported in random orientation on ex-situ prepared mica films is expanded by some 3% when compared to 5 nm size particles. It is believed that this expansion is neither a small-particle diffraction effect nor due to pseudomorphism, but that it is due to a annealing-induced transformation of the small as-deposited particles with predominantly composite crystal structures into larger particles with true f.c.c. structure and thus inherently smaller lattice parameter.

Continuous blood densitometry - Fluid shifts after graded hemorrhage in animals

Rapid fluid shifts in four pigs and two dogs subjected to graded hemorrhage are investigated. Arterial blood density (BD), mean arterial pressure (MAP), central venous pressure (CVP), arterial plasma density (PD), hematocrit (Hct) and erythrocyte density were measured. The apparatus and mechancial oscillator technique for measuring density are described. Fluid shifts between red blood cells and blood plasma and alterations in the whole-body-to-large vessel Hct, F(cell) are studied using two models. The bases of the model calculations are discussed. A decrease in MAP, CVP, and BP is detected at the beginning of hemorrhaging; continued bleeding results in further BD decrease correlating with volume displacement. The data reveal that at 15 ml/kg blood loss the mean PD and BD dropped by 0.99 + or - 0.15 and 2.42 + or 0.26 g/liter, respectively, and the Hct dropped by 2.40 + or 0.47 units. The data reveal that inward-shifted fluid has a higher density than normal ultrafiltrate and/or there is a rise in the F(cell) ratio. It is noted that rapid fluid replacement ranged from 5.8 + or - 0.8 to 10.6 + or - 2.0 percent of the initial plasma volume.

Fluid and protein shifts after postural changes in humans

The effects of head-up, one-step, slow-graded, and rapid-graded tilt positions on blood density (BD), plasma density (PD), and erythrocyte density (ED) in male and female subjects are evaluated using a mass density detection method. The preparation of the samples and procedures for density and hematocrit measurements are described. The formula for calculating the density and volume of fluid shifted between intravascular and extravascular compartments is derived. The data reveal that ED does not change with varying tilt positions; however, PD and BD increase linearly with increasing angles of tilt, thereby resembling the time course of hemodilution and hemoconcentration.

A comparative petrologic study of iron meteorites with radiogenic Ag-107 anomalies

The characteristics of the sulfide and metal phases of Derrick Peak, Cape York, Grant, Gibeon, and Santa Clara iron meteorite samples are examined. The textures and mineralogies of the samples are described. The effects of thermal and shock events on the distribution of Ag, and the relationship between Ag-107 and Pd are investigated. The correlation between the thermal histories and metal and sulfide nodules of the Gibeon and Santa Clara specimens is analyzed. It is noted that the Pd-107-Ag107 systematics involve the isotopic chemistry and cooling history of iron meteorites, the intensity of late extraterrestrial shock occurrences, and thermal processing.

The applicability of the catalytic wet-oxidation to CELSS

The wet oxidation catalysis of Au, Pd, Pt, Rh or Ru on a ceramic honeycomb carrier was traced in detail by 16 to 20 repetitive batch tests each. As a result, Pt or Pd on a honeycomb carrier was shown to catalyze complete nitrogen gasification as N2. Though the catalysts which realize both complete nitrogen gasification and complete oxidation could not be found, the Ru+Rh catalyst was found to be most promising. Ru honeycomb catalyzed both nitrification and nitrogen gasification.

A tuning scheme for proportional-and-derivative controllers

A simple way of tuning usual proportional-and-derivative (PD) controllers is presented. The tuning is devised so that the closed-loop system has a speed of response near that of time-optimal bang-bang control during a large portion of the transient period. When the system is near the desired equilibrium it behaves linearly, and thus avoids the problem of being overly sensitive to the disturbances and noise. The idea is rather intuitive. Unlike dual-mode control, the plant is controlled throughout by a PD controller. Numerical results are included.

A control scheme for trajectory tracking of robot manipulators

The authors put forward a simple scheme for multivariable control of robot manipulators. The scheme is composed of an inner-loop stabilizing controller and an outerloop tracking controller. The inner loop utilizes a multivariable PD (proportional differential) controller to stabilize the robot by placing the poles at some desired locations. The outer loop uses a multivariable PID (proportional integral differential) controller to achieve input-output decoupling and trajectory tracking. The gains of the PD and PID controllers are related directly to the linearized robot model by simple closed-form expressions. The controller gains are updated online to cope with variations in the robot model for gross motion and payload change. Alternatively, the use of high-gain controllers for gross motion and payload change are discussed.

Multivariable PID Controller For Robotic Manipulator

Gains updated during operation to cope with changes in characteristics and loads. Conceptual multivariable controller for robotic manipulator includes proportional/derivative (PD) controller in inner feedback loop, and proportional/integral/derivative (PID) controller in outer feedback loop. PD controller places poles of transfer function (in Laplace-transform space) of control system for linearized mathematical model of dynamics of robot. PID controller tracks trajectory and decouples input and output.

Direct solar-pumped iodine laser amplifier

The optimum conditions of a solar pumped iodine laser are found in this research for the case of a continuous wave operation and a pulsed operation. The optimum product of the pressure(p) inside the laser tube and the tube diameter(d) was pd=40 approx. 50 torr-cm on the contrary to the case of a high intensity flashlamp pumped iodine laser where the optimum value of the product is known to be pd=150 torr-cm. The pressure-diameter product is less than 1/3 of that of the high power iodine laser. During the research period, various laser materials were also studied for solar pumping. Among the laser materials, Nd:YAG is found to have the lowest laser threshold pumping intensity of about 200 solar constant. The Rhodamine 6G was also tested as the solar pumped laser material. The threshold pumping power was measured to be about 20,000 solar constant. The amplification experiment for a continuously pumped iodine laser amplifier was performed using Vortek solar simulator and the amplification factors were measured for single pass amplification and triple pass amplification of the 15 cm long amplifier tube. The amplification of 5 was obtained for the triple pass amplification.

Three-Man Solid Electrolyte Carbon Dioxide Electrolysis Breadboard

The development of the Three-Man (2.2 lb CO2/man-day) Solid Electrolyte CO2 Electrolysis Breadboard consisted of a Phase 1 and 2 effort. The Phase 1 effort constituted fabrication of three electrolysis cell types and performing parametric testing, off-design testing, and cell life testing. The Phase 2 consisted of the preliminary design, incorporation of palladium (Pd) tubes for hydrogen separation from the electrolyzer cathode feed gases, design support testing, final design, fabrication, and performance testing of the breadboard system. The results of performance tests demonstrated that CO2 electrolysis in an oxygen reclamation system for long duration space-based habitats is feasible. Closure of the oxygen system loop, therefore, can be achieved by CO2 electrolysis. In a two step process the metabolic CO2 and H2O vapor are electrolyzed into O2, H2, and CO. The CO can subsequently be disproportionated into carbon and CO2 in a carbon deposition reactor and the CO2 in turn be recycled and electrolyzed for total O2 recovery. The development effort demonstrated electrolyzer system can be designed and built to operate safely and reliably and the incorporation of Pd tubes for hydrogen diffusion can be integrated safely with predictable performance.

Recovery of precious metals in space

This program is proceeding along the lines compatible with the objective of developing feasible separation and recovery processes for precious metals in a space environment. Efficient, compact, solvent extraction systems (both single and multistage) capable of high selectivity and rapid equilibration that are based on chelate and ion pair complexes are being explored. Two research projects were undertaken: (1) study of the time-dependent aspects of the formation of Pd(2) extractable chelate complexes; and (2) development of a multistage countercurrent distribution process for the separation and recovery of Pd(2) and Pt(2) ions.
