Snowmass 2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: Cosmology with Millimeter-Wave Line Intensity Mapping

Next-generation tests of fundamental physics and cosmology using large scale structure require measurements over large volumes of the Universe, including high redshifts inaccessible to present-day surveys. Line intensity mapping, an emerging technique that detects the integrated emission of atomic and molecular lines without resolving sources, can efficiently map cosmic structure over a wide range of redshifts. Observations at millimeter wavelengths detect far-IR emission lines such as CO/[CII], and take advantage of observational and analysis techniques developed by CMB experiments. These measurements can provide constraints with unprecedented precision on the physics of inflation, neutrino masses, light relativistic species, dark energy and modified gravity, and dark matter, among many other science goals. In this white paper we forecast the sensitivity requirements for future ground-based mm-wave intensity mapping experiments to enable transformational cosmological constraints. We outline a staged experimental program to steadily improve sensitivity, and describe the necessary investments in developing detector technology and analysis techniques.

White Paper on High Temperature Superconducting Bi-2212 Magnets for Energy Frontier Circular Colliders

As the only high-temperature superconducting (HTS) material available as an isotropic, twisted, multifilamentary round wire, Bi-2212 is very promising for expanding the high-field superconducting accelerator magnet toolbox beyond the round-wire, isotropic Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn conductors used by HEP so far. In this paper, we describe the important roles that Bi-2212 might play for future high energy circular colliders including both high energy proton and muon colliders. We describe its present technology status (conductor development, magnet design concepts, prototype magnet status) and then provide a ten-year plan for >15 T accelerator magnets and >25 T solenoid magnets within an integrated strategy to engage industry and the entire US and international scientific enterprise interested in HTS magnet applications.

Higgs Self Couplings Measurements at Future proton-proton Colliders: a Snowmass White Paper

The Higgs boson trilinear and quartic self-couplings are directly related to the shape of the Higgs potential; measuring them with precision is extremely important, as they provide invaluable information on the electroweak symmetry breaking and the electroweak phase transition. In this paper, we perform a detailed analysis of double Higgs boson production, through the gluon gluon fusion process, in the most promising decay channels di-bottom-quark di-photons, di-bottom-quark di-tau, and four-bottom-quark for several future colliders: the HL-LHC at 14 TeV and the FCC-hh at 100 TeV, assuming respectively 3 inverse ab and 30 inverse ab of integrated luminosity. In the HL LHC scenario, we expect an upper limit on the di Higgs cross section production of 0.76 at 95% confidence level, corresponding to a significance of 2.8 sigma. In the FCC-hh scenario, depending on the assumed detector performance and systematic uncertainties, we expect that the Higgs self-coupling will be measured with a precision in the range 4.8-8.5% at 95% confidence level.

Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: Cosmological Simulations for Dark Matter Physics

Over the past several decades, unexpected astronomical discoveries have been fueling a new wave of particle model building and are inspiring the next generation of ever-more-sophisticated simulations to reveal the nature of Dark Matter (DM). This coincides with the advent of new observing facilities coming online, including JWST, the Rubin Observatory, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, and CMB-S4. The time is now to build a novel simulation program to interpret observations so that we can identify novel signatures of DM microphysics across a large dynamic range of length scales and cosmic time. This white paper identifies the key elements that are needed for such a simulation program. We identify areas of growth on both the particle theory side as well as the simulation algorithm and implementation side, so that we can robustly simulate the cosmic evolution of DM for well-motivated models. We recommend that simulations include a fully calibrated and well-tested treatment of baryonic physics, and that outputs should connect with observations in the space of observables. We identify the tools and methods currently available to make predictions and the path forward for building more of these tools. A strong cosmic DM simulation program is key to translating cosmological observations to robust constraints on DM fundamental physics, and provides a connection to lab-based probes of DM physics.

Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier CF6 White Paper: Multi-Experiment Probes for Dark Energy - Transients

This invited Snowmass 2021 White Paper highlights the power of joint-analysis of astronomical transients in advancing HEP Science and presents research activities that can realize the opportunities that come with current and upcoming projects. Transients of interest include gravitational wave events, neutrino events, strongly-lensed quasars and supernovae, and Type~Ia supernovae specifically. These transients can serve as probes of cosmological distances in the Universe and as cosmic laboratories of extreme strong-gravity, high-energy physics. Joint analysis refers to work that requires significant coordination from multiple experiments or facilities so encompasses Multi-Messenger Astronomy and optical transient discovery and distributed follow-up programs.

Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: Enabling Flagship Dark Energy Experiments to Reach their Full Potential

A new generation of powerful dark energy experiments will open new vistas for cosmology in the next decade. However, these projects cannot reach their utmost potential without data from other telescopes. This white paper focuses in particular on the compelling benefits of ground-based spectroscopic and photometric observations to complement the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, as well as smaller programs in aid of a DESI-2 experiment and CMB-S4. These additional data sets will both improve dark energy constraints from these flagship projects beyond what would possible on their own and open completely new windows into fundamental physics. For example, additional photometry and single-object spectroscopy will provide necessary follow-up information for supernova and strong lensing cosmology, while highly-multiplexed spectroscopy both from smaller facilities over wide fields and from larger facilities over narrower regions of sky will yield more accurate photometric redshift estimates for weak lensing and galaxy clustering measurements from the Rubin Observatory, provide critical spectroscopic host galaxy redshifts for supernova Hubble diagrams, provide improved understanding of limiting astrophysical systematic effects, and enable new measurements that probe the nature of gravity. A common thread is that access to complementary data from a range of telescopes/instruments would have a substantial impact on the rate of advance of dark energy science in the coming years.

A lattice QCD perspective on weak decays of $b$ and $c$ quarks Snowmass 2022 White Paper

Lattice quantum chromodynamics has proven to be an indispensable method to determine nonperturbative strong contributions to weak decay processes. In this white paper for the Snowmass community planning process we highlight achievements and future avenues of research for lattice calculations of weak $b$ and $c$ quark decays, and point out how these calculations will help to address the anomalies currently in the spotlight of the particle physics community. With future increases in computational resources and algorithmic improvements, percent level (and below) lattice determinations will play a central role in constraining the standard model or identifying new physics.

Paper #50 Preliminary Sizing of Active Magnetic Bearings for sCO2 Waste-Heat Recovery Application

The team of Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and GE Vernova (GE) is executing a project developing conceptual designs of high-temperature active magnetic bearings (AMBs) for sCO2 machinery applications. The goals of the project are to develop conceptual designs for radial and thrust AMBs capable of operating in sCO2 environments up to 1000°F. A waste-heat recovery (WHR) application with hermetic machinery is used as a reference case to apply AMBs. This application was previously investigated to compare hermetic machinery enabled by process-lubricated bearings and high-speed motors/generators with traditional machinery configurations using oil-lubricated bearings, gearboxes, and grid-frequency electric machines. In this paper, AMBs are sized for the WHR application machinery. Load capacity estimates are made using first-principle-derived formulas that consider operation at elevated temperatures. Estimates of linearized AMB system coefficients are also made to aid future controller development. Rotor models are developed that account for AMB rotor geometry and housing space requirements. Rotordynamics studies are performed to identify reasonable target values for closed-loop AMB stiffness and closed-loop AMB damping. These target values will be used in future control studies.

Prioritizing Transformative Energy Efficiency Technologies in the Pulp and Paper Sector Through Levelized Cost of Conserved Energy

This presentation explores how the U.S. pulp and paper sector can prioritize energy efficiency (EE) technologies using the Levelized Cost of Conserved Energy (LCCE) metric. As mills face market shifts and rising costs, technologies such as advanced drying, membrane concentration, waste heat recovery, and recovery boiler replacements offer potential savings but face economic barriers. LCCE enables consistent comparison of technologies by calculating cost per unit of energy saved, including capital, operating, and potentially non-energy benefits like productivity, maintenance, and safety improvements. Preliminary findings show economies of scale significantly influence recovery boiler replacement feasibility, with larger systems achieving lower LCCE values. Ongoing work incorporates non-energy benefits to provide a more comprehensive cost-effectiveness assessment and guide research, development, and deployment priorities for underutilized and emerging technologies.
