Characterization of defect growth structures in ion plated films by scanning electron microscopy

Gold and copper films (0.2-2 micron thick) are ion plated on very smooth stainless steel 304 and mica surfaces. The deposited films are examined by SEM to identify the morphological growth of defects. Three types of coating defects are distinguished: nodular growth, abnormal or runaway growth, and spits. The potential nucleation sites for defect growth are analyzed to determine the cause of defect formation. It is found that nuclear growth is due to inherent surface microdefects, abnormal or runaway growth is due to external surface inclusions, and spits are due to nonuniform evaporation and ejection of droplets. All these defects have adverse effects on the coatings.

Tuning the Solvation Structure in Aqueous Zinc Batteries to Maximize Zn-Ion Intercalation and Optimize Dendrite-Free Zinc Plating

Aqueous zinc batteries are recognized to suffer from H + /Zn 2+ coinsertion in the cathode, but few approaches have been reported to suppress deleterious H + intercalation. We realize this goal by tuning the solvation structure, using LiV 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LVP) as a model cathode. Phase conversion of LVP induced by H + intercalation is observed in 4 m Zn(OTf) 2 , whereas dominant Zn 2+ insertion is confirmed in a ZnCl 2 water-in-salt electrolyte (WiSE). This disparity is ascribed to the complete absence of free water and a strong Zn 2+ –H 2 O interaction in the latter that interrupts the H 2 O hydrogen bonding network, thus suppressing H + intercalation. On the basis of this strategy, a novel PEG-based hybrid electrolyte is designed to replace the corrosive ZnCl2 WiSE. This system exhibits an optimized Zn 2+ solvation sheath with a similar low free water content, showing not only much better suppression of H + intercalation but also highly reversible Zn plating/stripping with a CE of ~99.7% over 150 cycles.

Porous plate analog burner study of composite solid propellant flame structure

A porous plate burner system for studying the structure and interaction of diffusion flames from adjacent unlike sources of oxidizer to simulate the behavior of solid propellant flames is presented. The passage of oxidizer gases through ports of determined diameters represents decomposing oxidizer crystals, and are adjustable for various oxidizer/fuel ratio experiments. Tests with air, ethane, oxygen, and oxygen-air mixtures are described, with parameters of flow rate, oxygen/fuel ratio, and pressure. Coarse ports are found to be oxidizer rich, while fine ports are stoichiometric. More heat feedback is found with fine ports, indicating that fine particle propellant systems burn faster unless fuel allocation is such that the reduced temperature overcomes the reduced diffusion length. Further observations on the interactions of flames are reported.

Star-Shaped Fluid Flow Tool for Use in Making Differential Measurements

A fluid flow tool's plate-like structure has a ring portion defining a flow hole, a support portion extending radially away from the ring portion and adapted to be coupled to conduit wall, and extensions extending radially away from the ring portion such that a periphery of the plate-like structure is defined by the extensions and trough regions between adjacent extensions. One or more ports formed in the ring portion are in fluid communication with the flow hole. A first manifold in the plate-like structure is in fluid communication with each port communicating with the flow hole. One or more ports are formed in the periphery of the plate-like structure. A second manifold in the plate-like structure is in fluid communication with each port formed in the periphery. The first and second manifolds extend through the plate-like structure to terminate and be accessible at the conduit wall.

Charging rates of metal-dielectric structures

Metal plates partially covered by 0.01-centimeter-thick fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP) Teflon were charged in the Lewis Research Center's geomagnetic substorm simulation facility using 5-, 8-, 10-, and 12-kilovolt electron beams. Surface voltage as a function of time was measured for various initial conditions (Teflon discharged or precharged) with the metal plate grounded or floating. Results indicate that both the charging rates and the levels to which the samples become charged are influenced by the geometry and initial charge state of the insulating surfaces. The experiments are described and the results are presented and discussed. NASA charging analyzer program (NASCAP) models of the experiments have been generated, and the predictions obtained are described. Implications of the study results for spacecraft are discussed.

Principles of moment distribution applied to stability of structures composed of bars or plates

The principles of the cross method of moment distribution, which have previously been applied to the stability of structures composed of bars under axial load, are applied to the stability of structures composed of long plates under longitudinal load. A brief theoretical treatment of the subject, as applied to structures composed of either bars or plates, is included, together with an illustrative example for each of these two types of structure. An appendix presents the derivation of the formulas for the various stiffnesses and carry-over factors used in solving problems in the stability of structures composed of long plates.

Structural Health Monitoring of Composite Plates Under Ambient and Cryogenic Conditions

Methods for structural health monitoring are now being assessed, especially in high-performance, extreme environment, safety-critical applications. One such application is for composite cryogenic fuel tanks. The work presented here attempts to characterize and investigate the feasibility of using imbedded piezoelectric sensors to detect cracks and delaminations under cryogenic and ambient conditions. Different types of excitation and response signals and different sensors are employed in composite plate samples to aid in determining an optimal algorithm, sensor placement strategy, and type of imbedded sensor to use. Variations of frequency and high frequency chirps of the sensors are employed and compared. Statistical and analytic techniques are then used to determine which method is most desirable for a specific type of damage and operating environment. These results are furthermore compared with previous work using externally mounted sensors. More work is needed to accurately account for changes in temperature seen in these environments and be statistically significant. Sensor development and placement strategy are other areas of further work to make structural health monitoring more robust. Results from this and other work might then be incorporated into a larger composite structure to validate and assess its structural health. This could prove to be important in the development and qualification of any 2nd generation reusable launch vehicle using composites as a structural element.

Retro Rocket Motor Self-Penetrating Scheme for Heat Shield Exhaust Ports

A preliminary scheme was developed for base-mounted solid-propellant retro rocket motors to self-penetrate the Orion Crew Module heat shield for configurations with the heat shield retained during landings on Earth. In this system the motors propel impactors into structural push plates, which in turn push through the heat shield ablator material. The push plates are sized such that the remaining port in the ablator material is large enough to provide adequate flow area for the motor exhaust plume. The push plate thickness is sized to assure structural integrity behind the ablative thermal protection material. The concept feasibility was demonstrated and the performance was characterized using a gas gun to launch representative impactors into heat shield targets with push plates. The tests were conducted using targets equipped with Fiberform(R) and PICA as the heat shield ablator material layer. The PICA penetration event times were estimated to be under 30 ms from the start of motor ignition. The mass of the system (not including motors) was estimated to be less than 2.3 kg (5 lbs) per motor. The configuration and demonstrations are discussed.

Finite element structural model of a large, thin, completely free, flat plate

A finite element structural model of a 30.48 m x 30.48 m x 2.54 mm completely free aluminum plate is described and modal frequencies and mode shape data for the first 44 modes are presented. An explanation of the procedure for using the data is also presented. The model should prove useful for the investigation of controller design approaches for large flexible space structures.

Fast Charge-Driven Li Plating on Anode and Structural Degradation of Cathode

Enabling fast charging in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is a key factor to make electric vehicles drive just like gasoline-powered vehicles when the time comes to refuel. However, fast charging to current LIBs (LiNi x Mn y Co 1–z O 2 /graphite) is limited by lithium plating, which is barely reversible and causes LIBs to lose capacity over time. Thus, research to quantify the lithium plating in LIB cells is extremely important in improving our fundamental understanding of lithium plating behavior and enabling fast charging for LIBs. Here, we precisely quantified the amount of fast-charge-driven lithium plating in a coin-cell composed of LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC532)/graphite. We found that the amount of lithium plating gradually increases with the cycle count and reaches 25.59 μmole (26.80 mAh g –1 cathode ) by the 100th cycle. The study also reveals that the NMC532 has lost 19% of its original lithium content after 100 fast-charging cycles; this, correspondingly, causes a lattice volumetric strain of 0.59%.

Biaxial steel plated concrete constitutive models for composite structures: Implementation and validation

The Steel-plated Concrete (SC) technique is an alternative construction technique with faster onsite construction speed, reduced construction time, and increased structural performance. Aiming to predict the force transfer mechanism of SC elements, an innovative constitutive model package is proposed by implementing experimental-based biaxial steel plate concrete models into the nonlinear finite element (FE) model “Membrane Model of SC (MM-CS).” First, the formulation and implementation of the MM-SC is illustrated in detail, including the equilibrium and compatibility equations and the implementation of constitutive models. Next, various experimental data of SC members are selected and simulated using the proposed MM-SC model. In this research, two types of structures, SC panels and framed SC shear walls, and three types of loading conditions, including uniaxial compression, pure shear, and combined axial-flexural-shear tests, are analyzed respectively. Good agreements were obtained between the reported results and the FE simulation results in terms of yield capacity and ultimate capacity, proving the reliability of the implemented analytical constitutive material models and the biaxial membrane model formulations.
