Design and performance evaluation of a wideband FM spread-spectrum multiple-access system

The system described performs the tracking and communications functions of a tracking and data relay satellite system (TDRS). The spread-spectrum signal format is achieved through wide deviation FM by a sinusoidal subcarrier unique to each multiple-access user. A compound phase-locked loop tracks carrier and subcarrier and demodulates data and ranging signals. Design parameters of user and ground terminals for TDRS are given. Acquisition procedures are described. Performance analyses are presented including the effects of noise, RFI, multipath and other users.

I/Q reversal phenomena in 4-phase modified Costas Loops

A method for predicting the occurrence of I/Q reversals in unbalanced QPSK 4-phase modified Costas Loops is discussed. Potential causes for the reversal of in-phase and quadrature outputs of the unbalanced QPSK demodulator during acquisition and tracking are studied. The design of the unbalance QPSK demodulator and loop characteristics are described. The effect of an anomalous condition during a transient interval or demod/remod operation on data source output is examined. Filtering and hard-limiting effects, and the demodulator loop S-curve stability during tracking are evaluated.

A multi-channel demultiplexer/demodulator architecture, simulation and implementation

The development of multichannel demultiplexer/demodulator is described in which the aim is to optimize bandwidth and hardware efficiency. Attention is given to the simulation and performance analysis of the proposed architectures for the demultiplexer and the demodulator. The project is presently in the test phase, and it is suggested that the present results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of incorporating on-board processing in commercial communications satellites.

Structured Low-Density Parity-Check Codes with Bandwidth Efficient Modulation

In this work, we study the performance of structured Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) Codes together with bandwidth efficient modulations. We consider protograph-based LDPC codes that facilitate high-speed hardware implementations and have minimum distances that grow linearly with block sizes. We cover various higher- order modulations such as 8-PSK, 16-APSK, and 16-QAM. During demodulation, a demapper transforms the received in-phase and quadrature samples into reliability information that feeds the binary LDPC decoder. We will compare various low-complexity demappers and provide simulation results for assorted coded-modulation combinations on the additive white Gaussian noise and independent Rayleigh fading channels.

A Synthetic Quadrature Phase Detector/Demodulator for Fourier Transform Transform Spectrometers

A method is developed to demodulate (velocity correct) Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) data that is taken with an analog to digital converter that digitizes equally spaced in time. This method makes it possible to use simple low cost, high resolution audio digitizers to record high quality data without the need for an event timer or quadrature laser hardware, and makes it possible to use a metrology laser of any wavelength. The reduced parts count and simplicity implementation makes it an attractive alternative in space based applications when compared to previous methods such as the Brault algorithm.

High speed front end of the multimegabit telemetry demodulator detector

The high speed front end (HSFE) portion of the Multimegabit Telemetry Demodulator-Detector is discussed. The HSFE accepts in-phase and quadrature analog signals from the input signal conditioner. It samples them with analog-to-digital converters at maximum rate of 64 megasamples per second. The samples are processed digitally and the integrals of I, Q, and of their crossproduct over one symbol period are supplied at symbol rate to the rest of the system.

The use of interleaving for reducing noisy reference loss in trellis-coded modulation systems

The use of interleaving/deinterleaving in trellis-coded modulation systems to reduce the SNR loss due to imperfect carrier demodulation references is demonstrated. Both the discrete carrier (phase-locked loop) and the suppressed carrier (Costas loop) cases are considered, and the differences between the two are clearly demonstrated by numerical results. The special case of convolutional codes is also treated and illustrated with an example of practical interest.

Period Modulation For Telemetry

In innovative telemetry scheme, time between pulses of light transmitted along optical fiber represents measured quantity. In period modulator, time varied by varying control-input voltage, which serves as critical voltage of relaxation oscillator. Demodulator is simple state estimator, no discriminator or phase-locked loop needed. Applicable to radio or wire transmission. Pulses proportional to temperature, pressure, voltage, or other variable monitored remotely.

Evaluation of Costas Loops for demodulation of a spread spectrum signal for Space Shuttle up-link communications

The Space Shuttle Communication System utilizes a Costas Loop for carrier reconstruction to demodulate the Spread Spectrum signals. This design includes the increasingly popular hard limited in-phase channel which allows use of a switching type multiplier preceding the loop filter. This paper presents the development and performance of this type demodulator and includes supporting measured data.

A coherent digital demodulator for multiple signal formats and widely varying data rates

The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) uses four ground station demodulators for K-band signals with data rates from 1 kb/s to 300 Mb/s. The author discusses the feasibility of replacing these demodulators with a single digital demodulator that may be reconfigured by altering stored parameters to accommodate all signal formats and data rates. This implementation will reduce total ground station cost and facilitate automation of ground station operation. Analysis of system performance concentrates on the carrier tracking loop. Analytic and simulation results relate system performance to parameter values and signal format as data rate and power vary independently on the In-phase and quadrature channels. It is demonstrated that a single digital demodulator can support TDRSS-compatible signals at data rates conservatively extending from 1K symbols/s to 10M symbols/s, using off-the-shelf hardware with 6 or more bits of accuracy.

Effects of asymmetric passband filtering on the phase of the Costas loop's reconstructed carrier

The reconstructed carrier of a telemetry return signal is used in deriving the Doppler and range information in the radiometric systems. When suppressed carrier BPSK signalling with Costas loop demodulation is used, there are concerns on the amount of shift in the reconstructed carrier phase, when the received signal suffers asymmetric bandpass filtering through the various stages of the receiver. It is concluded that the phase shifts due to asymmetric bandpass filtering on the Costas loop's reconstructed carrier can be slightly worse than those suffered by the residual carrier loop's reconstructed carrier. However, they are well within the error budgets of the radiometric system.

Passive Tracking System and Method

System and methods are disclosed for passively determining the location of a moveable transmitter utilizing a pair of phase shifts at a receiver for extracting a direction vector from a receiver to the transmitter. In a preferred embodiment, a phase difference between the transmitter and receiver is extracted utilizing a noncoherent demodulator in the receiver. The receiver includes antenna array with three antenna elements, which preferably are patch antenna elements placed apart by one-half wavelength. Three receiver channels are preferably utilized for simultaneously processing the received signal from each of the three antenna elements. Multipath transmission paths for each of the three receiver channels are indexed so that comparisons of the same multipath component are made for each of the three receiver channels. The phase difference for each received signal is determined by comparing only the magnitudes of received and stored modulation signals to determine a winning modulation symbol.

On the group delay effect of DSN microwave components on multimegabit telemetry

When the gain and phase shift characteristics of the overall system between the modulator and demodulator are given, the group delay effect for the intended data rate can be assessed by examining the equation for the recovered signal for several rectangular pulse inputs with different duty cycles. For example, the group delay loss of 30 Mbit/sec telemetry with only a Block II X-band maser is less than 0.2 dB even with a 10-MHz center frequency offset.

Antimultipath communication by injecting tone into null in signal spectrum

A transmitter for digital radio communication creates a null by balanced encoding of data modulated on an RF carrier, and inserts a calibration tone within the null. This is accomplished by having the calibration tone coincide in phase and frequency with the transmitted radio frequency output, for coherent demodulation of data at the receiver where the tone calibration signal is extracted and used for multipath fading compensation.
