Interstellar iron and manganese - UV oscillator strengths and abundances

Observations of 16 UV resonance lines of Fe II and six of Mn II in five stars are used to derive new f-values for the lines of these species at wavelengths lower than 1300 A. Values of forbidden lines Fe/H and Mn/H are derived. These new values are used to reassess mean depletions and range of variations in depletions for several lines of sight. On an integrated line-of-sight basis, depletions of Fe and Mn show larger variations than P, Cl, or Zn. The mean local depletion forbidden line Fe/H is 1.65, in interstellar gas. One Fe II line, 2366.864 A, has never been detected. Its f-value is shown to be much lower than previously thought. This line is therefore not useful for interstellar studies at the present time. It is suggested that the true wavelength of 1142 A of Fe II, from UV multiplet 10, is 1142.285 A.

Mean excitation energies for stopping powers in various materials using local plasma oscillator strengths

The basic model of Lindhard and Scharff, known as the local plasma model, is used to study the effects on stopping power of the chemical and physical state of the medium. Unlike previous work with the local plasma model, in which individual electron shifts in the plasma frequency were estimated empirically, he Pines correction derived for a degenerate Fermi gas is shown herein to provide a reasonable estimate, even on the atomic scale. Thus, the model is moved to a complete theoretical base requiring no empirical adjustments, as characteristic of past applications. The principal remaining error is in the overestimation of the low-energy absorption properties that are characteristic of the plasma model in the region of the atomic discrete spectrum, although higher-energy phenomena are accurately represented, and even excitation-to-ionization ratios are given to fair accuracy. Mean excitation energies for covalent-bonded gases and solids, for ionic gases and crystals, and for metals are calculated using first-order models of the bonded states.

Optical region elemental abundance analyses of B and A stars. IV - Re-evaluation with new critically compiled Fe II oscillator strengths and improved estimates of the damping constants

A new critical compilation of Fe II f-values has recently been completed by Martin et al. To see how these values affect the derived stellar abundances both directly in changing the values of log Fe/H for individual lines and through the determination of the microturbulent velocities, the data for 11 (six normal and five slightly peculiar) sharp-lined B and A stars have been reanalyzed. At the same time, the choice of line damping constants has been investigated, especially for Fe I and Fe II lines.

High resolution absorption cross-sections and band oscillator strengths of the Schumann-Runge absorption bands of isotopic oxygen, (0-16)(0-18), at 79 K

Cross-sections of (0-16)(0-18) at 79 K have been obtained from photoabsorption measurements on mixtures of (0-16)2, (0-18)2, and (0-16)(0-18) at various pressures throughout the wavelength region 180.5-195.3 nm with a 6.65 m photoelectric scanning spectrometer equipped with a 2400 lines/mm grating and having an instrumental width (FWHM) of 0.0013 nm. The measured absorption cross-sections of the (0-16)(0-18) Schumann-Runge bands (11.0)-(3.0) are independent of the instrumental width. The measured cross-sections are presented graphically.

Atomic Physics with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope: Oscillator Strengths for Neutral Carbon - III

High quality spectra of interstellar absorption from C I toward beta(sup 1) S(sub co), rho O(sub ph) A, and chi O(sub ph) were obtained with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on HST. Many weak lines were detected within the observed wavelength intervals: 1150-1200 A for beta(sup 1) S(sub co) and 1250-1290 A for rho O(sub ph) A and chi O(sub ph). Curve-of-growth analyses were performed in order to extract accurate column densities and Doppler parameters from lines with precise laboratory-based f-values. These column densities and b-values were used to obtain a self-consistent set of f-values for all the observed C I lines. A particularly important constraint was the need to reproduce data for more than one line of sight. For about 50% of the lines, the derived f-values differ appreciably from the values quoted by Morton.

Atomic Oscillator Strengths in the Vacuum Ultraviolet

We have developed techniques to measure branching fractions in the vacuum ultraviolet using diffraction grating spectroscopy and phosphor image plates as detectors. These techniques have been used to measure branching fractions in Fe II that give prominent emission lines in astrophysical objects.
