Cross sections for the 54 Fe(n, n′) 54 Fe and 54 Fe(n, p′) 54 Mn reactions deduced from the detection of de-excitation γ rays

γ-ray production cross sections have been deduced for reactions with incident neutrons having energies from 1.5 - 4.7 MeV. Similar measurements were made on a natural Ti sample to establish an absolute normalization. The resulting γ-ray production cross sections are compared to TENDL and TALYS calculations, as well as data from previous measurements. The models are found to describe the production cross sections for most γ rays observed from 54Mn and 54Fe rather well.

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Description of 238 U⁡(n,f), 240,242 Pu⁢(n,f), and 237 Np(n,f) Reactions

In nuclei with an odd nucleon number the nonvanishing spin number density is the source of a pseudomagnetic field, which favors the splitting of the nucleon Cooper pairs. Such a pseudomagnetic field is generated always in the dynamics of any nucleus, but its effects on Cooper pairs are significantly enhanced in the dynamic evolution of nuclei with an odd number of nucleons. We present for the first time a microscopic study of the induced fission of the odd neutron compound nuclei 239 U, 241,243 Pu, and the odd proton, odd neutron compound nucleus 238 Np, performed within the time-dependent density functional theory extended to superfluid fermion systems, without any simplifying assumptions, with controlled numerical approximations, and for a very large number of initial conditions. Because of the presence of the unpaired odd nucleon(s), the time-reversal symmetry of the fission compound nucleus is spontaneously broken, an aspect routinely neglected in the most advanced microscopic approaches of the past. The emerging fission fragment properties are quite similar to the properties of fission fragments of neighboring even-even nuclei. The time from saddle-to-scission is often significantly longer in odd-odd or odd-mass nuclei than for even-even nuclei, since systems with unpaired nucleons are easier to excite and the potential energy surfaces of these nuclei have more structure, often resembling a very complicated obstacle course, rather than a more direct evolution of the nuclear shape from the top of the outer fission barrier to the scission configuration. The Pauli blocking approximation, often invoked in the literature, expected to inhibit the fission of nuclei with unpaired nucleons, is surprisingly strongly violated during the fission dynamics.

Theoretical investigations of the structures and binding energies of Be(sub n) and Mg(sub n) (n = 3-5) clusters

Researchers determined the equilibrium geometries and binding energies of Be and Mg trimers, tetramers and pentamers using single and double excitation coupled cluster (CCSD) and complete active space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) wave functions in conjunction with extended atomic basis sets. Best estimates of the cluster binding energies are 24, 83 and 110 kcal/mole for Be3, Be4 and Be5; and 9, 31 and 41 kcal/mole for Mg3, Mg4 and Mg5, respectively. A comparison of the MRCI and CCSD results shows that even the best single-reference approach (limited to single and double excitations) is not capable of quantitative accuracy in determining the binding energies of Be and Mg clusters.

The binding energies of Cu(+)-(H2O)n and Cu(+)-(NH3)n (n = 1-4)

The successive binding energies of up to four H2O and NH3 ligands to Cu(+) are computed at the self-consistent-field and modified coupled-pair functional levels. The most stable structures are those where all ligands are equivalent. Replacing Cu(+) by a point charge gives binding energies that are in good agreement with ab initio and experimental results, and is consistent with bonding that is largely charge dipole in nature. About two-thirds of the large reduction in ligand binding energy between the second and third ligand is due to ligand-ligand repulsion, while one-third is due to increased metal-ligand repulsion resulting from a loss of sd-sigma hybridization. The first and second ligand binding energies increase substantially at the correlated level due to an improved description of sd-sigma hybridization.

High pressure synthesis and magnetic studies of quasi one dimensional systems Sr(n-1)Cu(n+1)O(2n) (n=3,5)

SrCu2O3 and Sr2Cu3O5 containing two-leg and three-leg S = 1/2 ladders made of antiferromagnetic Cu-O-Cu linear bonds, respectively, were synthesized at high pressure, and their crystallographic and magnetic properties were investigated. Both susceptibility and T(1) data of NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) revealed the existence of a large spin gap only for SrCu2O3. Superconductivity, which had been predicted theoretically for carrier-doped SrCu2O3 could not be realized although partial substitution of La(3+) for Sr(2+) seemed to be carried out successfully. Electron carriers injected seems to remain localized.

The Baghdad Atlas: A relational database of inelastic neutron-scattering (n,n ' γ) data

A relational database has been developed based on the original (n,n'γ) work carried out by A. M. Demidov et al., at the Nuclear Research Institute in Baghdad, Iraq (Demidov et al., 1978) for 105 independent measurements comprising 76 elemental samples of natural composition and 29 isotopically-enriched samples. The information from this Atlas includes: γ-ray energies and relative intensities; nuclide and level data corresponding to the residual nucleus and meta data associated with the target sample that allows for the extraction of the flux-weighted (n,n'γ) cross sections for a given transition relative to a defined value. The optimized angular-distribution-corrected fast-neutron flux-weighted partial γ-ray cross section for the production of the 846.8-keV 21+→0gs+γ-ray transition in 56Fe, determined to be $\langle$σγ$\rangle$=143(29) mb, is used for this purpose. However, different values for the adopted cross section can be readily implemented to accommodate user preference based on revised determinations of this quantity. The Atlas (n,n'γ) data has been compiled into a series of CSV-style ASCII data sets and a suite of Python scripts have been developed to build and install the database locally. The database can then be accessed directly through the SQLite engine, or using alternative methods such as the Jupyter Notebook Python-browser interface. Several examples exploiting different interaction methodologies are distributed with the complete software package.

Efficient microwave absorption with V n+1 C n T x MXenes

The availability of MXenes and other two-dimensional conductive nanomaterials with tunable surface chemistry has reshaped the field of electromagnetic protection. However, the high electrical conductivity and low dielectric loss of titanium-based MXenes lead to strong reflection of electromagnetic waves, even when combined with polymers to form composites. Here, we report on the ability of vanadium-based MXenes to provide broadband microwave absorption. Polyurethane composites with ~2 wt % V n+1 C n T x can absorb 90% of electromagnetic waves covering the entire X band. In addition, pure V n+1 C n T x films of submicrometer thickness can provide effective electromagnetic interference shielding. The free electron transport, surface terminations, native defects, and layers arrangement in composites have profound effects on electronic and dielectric properties of V n+1 C n T x MXenes. This study points toward a new frontier for development of thin and highly absorbing MXene-based electromagnetic protection materials.

Hybrid-Lipid Bilayers Induce n -Alkyl-Chain Order in Reversed-Phase Chromatographic Surfaces, Impacting their Shape Selectivity for Aromatic Hydrocarbon Partitioning

Shape selectivity is important in reversed-phase liquid chromatographic separations, where stationary phases are capable of separating geometric isomers, thereby resolving solutes based on their three-dimensional structure or shape rather than other chemical differences. Numerous chromatographic studies have been carried out using n-alkyl-chain-modified columns to understand how molecular shape affects retention. For polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), it was found that planar compounds were selectively retained over non-planar structures of comparable molecular weight on surfaces with longer n-alkyl chains, higher chain-density, or at lower temperatures, where selectivity likely arises with greater ordering of the n-alkyl chains. A limitation of these studies, however, is the small range of chain ordering that can be achieved and lack of a direct measure of the n-alkyl-chain order of the stationary phases. In this work, we employ a C 18 stationary phase modified with a monolayer of phospholipid as a means of significantly varying the n-alkyl chain order. These hybrid-supported lipid bilayers, which have previously been employed as membrane-like stationary phases for measuring lipophilicity, provide a unique approach to control n-alkyl chain ordering by varying the acyl chain length and degree of unsaturation of the phospholipid modifier. The degree of alkyl-chain order of the resulting modified surfaces is determined from the ratio of trans- versus gauche-conformers, measured in situ within individual porous particles by confocal Raman microscopy. This methodology was also used to assess the affinity of these surfaces for planar versus non-planar PAH molecules. The retention selectivity for the planar versus non-planar compounds, thus determined, was found to vary significantly and systematically with the degree of order of the acyl/alkyl chains in the hybrid-supported lipid bilayers. Furthermore, the investigation also demonstrates the utility of confocal Raman microscopy for interrogating the impact of solute partitioning on stationary-phase structure within porous chromatographic particles.

Stabilization of [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– (X = H, F, Cl, Br) by Conjugation and Hyperconjugation Effects

The isolation of nucleophilic boron bases has led to a paradigm shift in boron chemistry. Previous studies of the bis(carbene) borylene complexes revealed that these compounds possess strong donor abilities, and their reaction inertness is due to the large steric hindrance between boron reagents and reactant. In the present study, we have theoretically studied the [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– compounds (X = H, F, Cl, Br). Their electronic structures and properties are discussed by using the NBO, LOL, and ELF methods. We found that both π-conjugation and hyperconjugation effects can effectively stabilize the substituted nucleophilic anionic boron compounds [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– . Substituents, especially X = H, stabilize the boron center through highly delocalized π-bonding, involving the formally “empty” in-plane p orbitals of the boron atom. While the halogen substituents have high electron withdrawal ability, leading to systems being less stable, we suggest the borinium anions [(N 5 ) 2 BH] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 H 2 ] 2– as possible synthetic targets of novel environmentally friendly catalysts.

Capturing CO 2 in Quadrupolar Binding Pockets: Broadband Microwave Spectroscopy of Pyrimidine-(CO 2 ) n , n = 1,2

Pyrimidine has two in-plane CH(δ+)/N̈(δ–)/CH(δ+) binding sites that are complementary to the (δ–/2δ+/δ–) quadrupole moment of CO 2 . For this study, we recorded broadband microwave spectra over the 7.5–17.5 GHz range for pyrimidine-(CO 2 ) n with n = 1 and 2 formed in a supersonic expansion. Based on fits of the rotational transitions, including nuclear hyperfine splitting due to the two 14 N nuclei, we have assigned 313 hyperfine components across 105 rotational transitions for the n = 1 complex and 208 hyperfine components across 105 rotational transitions for the n = 2 complex. The pyrimidine-CO 2 complex is planar, with CO 2 occupying one of the quadrupolar binding sites, forming a structure in which the CO 2 is stabilized in the plane by interactions with the C–H hydrogens adjacent to the nitrogen atom. This structure is closely analogous to that of the pyridine-CO 2 complex studied previously by (Doran, J. L. J. Mol. Struct. 2012, 1019, 191–195). The fit to the n = 2 cluster gives rotational constants consistent with a planar cluster of C 2v symmetry in which the second CO 2 molecule binds in the second quadrupolar binding pocket on the opposite side of the ring. The calculated total binding energy in pyrimidine-CO 2 is –13.7 kJ mol –1 , including corrections for basis set superposition error and zero-point energy, at the CCSD(T)/ 6-311++G(3df,2p) level, while that in pyrimidine-(CO 2 ) 2 is almost exactly double that size, indicating little interaction between the two CO 2 molecules in the two binding sites. The enthalpy, entropy, and free energy of binding are also calculated at 300 K within the harmonic oscillator/rigid-rotor model. This model is shown to lack quantitative accuracy when it is applied to the formation of weakly bound complexes.
