Creating multifunctional synthetic lichen platforms for sustainable biosynthesis of biofuel precursors

In this project, we were creating a sustainable platform for biofuel production, utilizing carbon-fixing autotrophs to supply oxygen and organic substrates to heterotrophic partners, which in turn produce carbon dioxide to feed the autotrophs. This symbiotic lichen community could lower the input cost, optimize metabolic exchanges and improve the generation of biofuel precursors through multi-omics driven genetic engineering. The cyanobacteria Synechococcus elongatus (S. elongatus) was used as the primary autotroph to provide oxygen and organic substrates, especially sucrose, to a co-culture system. The strain with overexpression of sucrose transporter cscB demonstrated a significant increase in sucrose production under salt stress as what we expected. We also implemented 13C metabolic flux analysis on the sucrose secreting strain S. elongatus cscB-NaCl. Next, transporters proteins like glutamate exporter mscCG from Corynebacterium glutamicum was overexpressed in S. elongatus to improve metabolite exchange.

A Multifunctional Isostructural Bilayer Oxygen Evolution Electrode for Durable Intermediate-Temperature Electrochemical Water Splitting

The overarching goal of the proposed research is to address SOEC’s degradation problem by advancing a new isostructural highly electrocatalytically active bilayer oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrode, consisting of a LSCF (La 1-x Sr x Co 1-y Fe y O 3-δ ) core and a SCT (SrCo 0.9 Ta 0.1 O 3-δ ) shell, to achieve high and sustainable rate of oxygen evolution matching operating current densities without encountering delamination. To realize this goal, the project has adopted a combined experimental and theoretical approach to conduct research in the following six areas closely associated with SOPO tasks: 1) Development of electrocatalytically active bilayer oxygen electrodes (SOPO task-1) 2) Development of new symmetric three electrode cell (STEC) methodology to extract electrokinetic data of oxygen electrodes (SOPO task-2) 3) Quantification of electrokinetics of bilayer oxygen electrodes and correlation with degradation and delamination (SOPO task-2) 4) Performances of bilayer oxygen electrodes under fuel cells and electrolyzers modes (SOPO task-3) 5) Microscale modeling of oxygen electrode/electrolyte interface in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOPO task-4) 6) Prediction of crack growth rate at oxygen electrode/electrolyte interface in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOPO task-4)

A Generic and Multifunctional Electromagnetic Transient Model for Grid-Following Inverters

This article presents a generic and multi-functional electromagnetic transient (EMT) dynamic model of grid following (GFL) inverter-based resource (IBR) using the PSCAD software platform. The features of the developed model includes the flexibility in selecting various types and combinations of DC sources covering PV modules, battery modules, ideal DC source module, as well as flexibility in selecting either switched or averaged model of inverter. This model also covers exhaustive lists of controller logic covering open-loop/closed-loop PQ dispatch control, DC voltage and AC terminal voltage control along with the conventional current control designed in dq-domain, ate- domain and positive-negative sequence domain. Moreover, this model is equipped with the flexibility in selecting various types of current limiting schemes that includes saturation-based as well as latching-based current limiter, anti-windup protection. Moreover, the EMT model is agnostic to the MVA rating and is suitable for interfacing transmission systems by being complaint with the IEEE Std. 2800. The generality in the power circuits and the multi-functional options in operation and control of the developed EMT model makes it suitable for both academia and industry to study various power system aspects not limited to but such as fault behavior of GFL IBR and impacts on protection system, transient stability of a system interfaced with large number of GFL IBRs etc.

Compression Response of Silicone-Based Composites with Integrated Multifunctional Fillers

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is known for its exceptional mechanical properties, chemical stability, and flexibility. Recent advancements have focused on developing functional PDMS composites by integrating various functional fillers, including polymers, ceramics, and metals, for advanced applications such as electronics, medical devices, and aerospace. Consequently, there is a growing need to investigate PDMS composites to achieve higher filler loadings offering enhanced mechanical performance. This study addresses this need by utilizing the high molecular weight (MW) PDMS resin we have developed, offering its high elongation capacity of up to >6500%. We incorporated boron (B), hollow glass microballoons (HGMs), and tungsten-coated hollow glass microballoons (WHGMs) into the developed high MW PDMS. The resulting composites demonstrated excellent elastic properties and significant compression resilience (35–80%) and elastic modulus (1.28–10.15 MPa) at high filler loadings (~60 vol.%). Specifically, B/PDMS composites achieved up to 67.6 vol.% of B, HGM/PDMS composites held up to 68.6 vol.% of HGM, and WHGM/PDMS composites incorporated up to 54.0 vol.% of WHGM. These findings highlight the potential of high MW PDMS for developing high-performance PDMS composites suitable for advanced applications such as aerospace, automotive, and medical devices.

A Systematic Framework for Tuning Open-Source Multifunctional IBR Models To Emulate OEM Black-Box Fault Dynamics

This paper presents a systematic framework to tune a generic IBR EMT model to match with an OEM provided balckbox inverter model based on the fault current responses. The key learnings and findings are summarized as follows: The tunable key parameters include inner control loops and current limiters to align the fault current magnitude, sequence content, and phase trajectories with the OEM models across diverse fault type and locations. The tuned model's fidelity is validated through comparative analysis with an OEM blackbox model, assessing both the fault current response and the responses of multiple relay elements. The results demonstrate the tuned generic model can trigger relay decision logic that is identical or near identical to that of the OEM model, thus generating very good match model for fault studies.

Multiple-beam satellite repeater tradeoffs applied to a multifunctional system.

This paper concerns satellite repeater tradeoffs for a multiple-beam, multiple-channel, multiple-connectivity satellite postulated to serve a diversity of domestic U.S. noncommercial requirements, with a substantial portion of the satellite power, weight, and bandwidth dedicated to video distribution and bradcast. The orders-of-magnitude of the requirements are given for the video plus high-rate data traffic category. The designs of two alternative baseline repeater configurations are presented, and estimates of their weight and their prime power consumption are given. These data are the basis for estimating the weight and power consumption of a range of alternative beam coverage, modulation, and channel capacity systems. These estimates are used to illustrate tradeoffs with different performance criteria as the independent variable: number of channels per beam and total number of beam-channels.

Multifunction audio digitizer

An illustrative embodiment of the invention includes apparatus which simultaneously produces both direct delta modulation and pulse code modulation. An input signal, after amplification, is supplied to a window comparator which supplies a polarity control signal to gate the output of a clock to the appropriate input of a binary up-down counter. The control signals provide direct delta modulation while the up-down counter output provides pulse code modulation.

Effects of multifunctional crosslinking agents on the thermomechanical properties of polyimide films

The potential of high temperature resistant polymers such as polyimides (PI) and polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQ) as matrix resins in fiber-reinforced composites has not been fully realized to date. One of the problems associated with these resins is that they exhibit creep, or thermoplastic yielding under load at temperatures approaching 316 C (600 F). The purpose of this investigation was to further reduce thermoplastic behavior of polyimide resins by substituting a controlled amount of the diamine monomer with crosslinking agents having a higher amine functionality. The knowledge gained from a study of the thermomechanical properties of the crosslinked resins would then be used in the fabrication of fiber-reinforced polyimide composites. This report describes the synthesis and characterization of three new polyfunctional amines. Polyimide films containing varying amounts of the cross-linking agents were prepared, and their properties compared with those of control samples prepared with difunctional amines. The effect of crosslink density on isothermal weight loss, polymer softening, and glass transition temperatures is discussed.
