Effects of magnetic field annealing on the hard magnetic properties of milled Nd-Fe-B powders

In this study, we report the effect of magnetic field annealing (MA) in relieving the stress induced during the milling of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets. The effect of MA processing parameters and particle size on the magnetic properties were investigated. Based on the results, magnetic field annealing is more effective in improving the magnetic properties of larger size particles, compared to finer particles. Our computational study on the role of particle surface defects in bi-modal particle distribution agrees with results obtained experimentally. In conclusion, magnetic field annealed powder has been successfully used to develop 4.6 g.cm -3 density bonded magnets with 75 vol% of magnetic powder and polyamide 12 (nylon 12) polymer binder resulting in 11.3 MGOe energy product.

Topological structure of the magnetotail as a function of interplanetary magnetic field direction

Magnetic reconnection between the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and the geomagnetic field is thought to play a major role in the transfer of solar wind momentum and energy to the magnetosphere. As the angle between the IMF and the geomagnetic field is changed at the bow of the magnetosphere, the topological record of the location of the reconnection region should be recorded in the magnetosheath and on the magnetopause along the flanks of the tail, because the super fast flow freezes strong magnetic gradients formed in the bow reconnection regions into the plasma downstream. In this report, we present results from a three-dimensional, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), global numerical simulation code for the location of the separatrix between unconnected IMF magnetosheath field lines and reconnected field lines which penetrate the magnetopause and connect to the polar ionosphere. The angle between the IMF direction and the line where the separatrix crosses the magnetopause is shown to be a sensitive function of the IMF clock angle. We also explain how this behavior can be used to derive an approximate relation for the dependence of the cross-polar voltage on the IMF clock angle. We conclude with a note of caution concerning the importance of physical boundary conditions in magnetoplasma simulations.

Remanent magnetism of HED meteorites: Implications for their evolution and ancient magnetic fields

The magnetic properties of extraterrestrial materials, in particular natural remanent magnetization (NRM), is a potentially useful study for detecting ancient Solar System magnetic fields and for elucidating meteorite evolutionary processes. Results are presented for the following: howardites--Kapoeta, Petersburg, Le Teilleul, and EET 87503; eucrites--Sioux County and Millbillillie; and diogenites--Shalka and Johnstown. Significant features of their magnetism are within-sample in homogeneity of NRM directions in several of the meteorites and within-sample uniformity of axes of an isotropy of magnetic susceptibility. Both these phenomena bear on the meteorites' evolution and the timing of the magnetization process.

Improved State Estimation in Distorted Magnetic Fields

The magnetic field of the Earth – besides varying naturally – may be disturbed locally by the (man-made) environment. State estimation and corresponding navigation frameworks that use magnetometers on-board of mobile platforms suffer from severe performance loss or failure upon local magnetic distortions if these are not detected and mitigated adequately. Advanced estimators include the magnetic variation in the state vector. However, Cartesian coordinates, although widely used in the literature, suffer from observability issues when it comes to disturbance detection. This paper shows the importance of representing the magnetic variation in a spherical coordinate system and subsequent improvements with respect to the common representation in Cartesian coordinates. The spherical representation improves estimator consistency and allows for accurate and fast mitigation of magnetic disturbances through consistent statistical tests which leads to better system state estimates in magnetically distorted areas. The approach is validated by performing tests with simulated and real-world data on embedded hardware.

Jupiter's and Saturn's fine-scale magnetic fields

In situ magnetic field data from Jupiter and Saturn are used to interpret earth-based microwave observations for all areas except Branson's hot spot on Jupiter. It is found that Jupiter's field is strongly dipolar but has large high-order moments compared with the magnetic field of the earth. Decametric emissions of Jupiter have a complex rotational pattern which appears to have been stable since 1980. Microwave observations Saturn's radio emissions were strongly asymmetric along the rotational axis, indicating the presence of longitudinal variations in the magnetic fields a thousand kilometers from the cloud tops. The magnetic fields within a few thousand kilmeters of the cloud tops of both Jupiter and Saturn could not be identified.

Quantitative measurements of reactive oxygen species partitioning in electron transfer flavoenzyme magnetic field sensing

Biological magnetic field sensing that gives rise to physiological responses is of considerable importance in quantum biology. The radical pair mechanism (RPM) is a fundamental quantum process that can explain some of the observed biological magnetic effects. In magnetically sensitive radical pair (RP) reactions, coherent spin dynamics between singlet and triplet pairs are modulated by weak magnetic fields. The resulting singlet and triplet reaction products lead to distinct biological signaling channels and cellular outcomes. A prevalent RP in biology is between flavin semiquinone and superoxide (O 2 •–) in the biological activation of molecular oxygen. This RP can result in a partitioning of reactive oxygen species (ROS) products to form either O 2 •– or hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Here, we examine magnetic sensing of recombinant human electron transfer flavoenzyme (ETF) reoxidation by selectively measuring O 2 •– and H 2 O 2 product distributions. ROS partitioning was observed between two static magnetic fields at 20 nT and 50 μT, with a 13% decrease in H 2 O 2 singlet products and a 10% increase in O 2 •– triplet products relative to 50 µT. RPM product yields were calculated for a realistic flavin/superoxide RP across the range of static magnetic fields, in agreement with experimental results. For a triplet born RP, the RPM also predicts about three times more O 2 •– than H 2 O 2 , with experimental results exhibiting about four time more O 2 •– produced by ETF. The method presented here illustrates the potential of a novel magnetic flavoprotein biological sensor that is directly linked to mitochondria bioenergetics and can be used as a target to study cell physiology.

Mars Observer magnetic fields investigation

The magnetic fields experiment designed for the Mars Observer mission will provide definitive measurements of the Martian magnetic field from the transition and mapping orbits planned for the Mars Observer. The paper describes the instruments (which include a classical magnetometer and an electron reflection magnetometer) and techniques designed to investigate the nature of the Martian magnetic field and the Mars-solar wind interaction, the mapping of crustal magnetic fields, and studies of the Martian ionosphere, which are activities included in the Mars Observer mission objectives. Attention is also given to the flight software incorporated in the on-board data processor, and the procedures of data processing and analysis.
