Linear phase demodulator including a phase locked loop with auxiliary feedback loop

A phase modulated wave that may have no carrier power is demodulated by a phase locked loop including a phase detector for deriving an A.C. data output signal having a magnitude and a phase indicative of the phase of the modulated wave. A feedback loop responsive to the data output signal restores power to the carrier frequency component to the loop. In one embodiment, the feedback loop includes a phase modulator responsive to the phase modulated wave and the data output signal. In a second embodiment, carrier frequency power is restored by differentiating the data output signal and supplying the differentiated signal to an input of a voltage controlled oscillator included in the phase locked loop.

Length controlled stabilized mode-lock ND:YAG laser

A method and apparatus for stabilizing the amplitude and repetition rate of mode-locked Nd:YAG laser pulses by controlling the laser length through a feedback loop are described. The end mirror of the laser is mounted on a piezoelectric crystal which is dithered at a low frequency. A portion of fundamental 1.06 micrometer laser radiation is converted into its second harmonic frequency, and the average power of the second harmonic frequency is detected by an integrating detector. The amount of the power of the second harmonic frequency depends on the match between the optical length of the laser cavity and the mode-lock frequency. The length is controlled by a feedback loop which phase compares the output of the second harmonic detector to the piezoelectric crystal dither signal.

Bit-synchronizer lock detector

Circuit measures phase error that exists in phase-locked loop between clock signal recorded in data on magnetic tape and reconstructed clock signal. Circuit presents error as digital word that can be compared with predetermined threshold to indicate lock status. With simple alterations, circuit can also be used as phase detector.

The line-locking hypothesis, absorption by intervening galaxies, and the z = 1.95 peak in redshifts

The controversy over whether the absorption spectrum in QSOs is intrinsic or extrinsic is approached with attention to the peak of redshifts at z = 1.95. Also considered are the line-locking and the intervening galaxy hypotheses. The line locking hypothesis is based on observations that certain ratios found in absorption line QSOs are preferred, and leads inevitably to the conclusion that the absorption line systems are intrinsic. The intervening galaxy hypothesis is based on absorption redshifts resulting from given absorption cross-sections of galactic clusters and the intergalactic medium, and would lead to the theoretical conclusion that most QSOs show strong absorption, a conclusion which is not supported by empirical data. The 1.95 peak, on the other hand, is most probably an intrinsic property of QSOs. The peak is enhanced by redshift, and it is noted that both an emission and an absorption redshift peak are seen at 1.95.

High power phase locked laser oscillators

The feasibility of mechanizing an adaptive array of independent laser oscillators for generation of a high power coherent output was experimentally investigated. Tests were structured to evaluate component/system requirements for delivery of energy to a low-earth orbit satellite. Initial experiments addressed the control issues of phase locking unstable resonators at low power levels. A successful phase lock demonstration formed the basis for the design and fabrication of the high power, water-cooled, control mirror subsequently installed in the NASA LeRC high power laser. Tests were performed to characterize the operational limits of the laser system and included quantitative assessment of the frequency stability, noise sources, and optical properties of the beam.

How tidal heating in Io drives the Galilean orbital resonance locks

The mechanisms by which orbital resonance locks are maintained among Io, Europa and Ganymede are analyzed, and the effects of the dissipative tides in Jupiter and Io on their establishment and evolution are considered. According to the proposed model, initially all three satellites are in orbits far from the 2:1 commensurabilities or the three body lock. The tide raised on Io damps down the free eccentricity; only modest tidal heating occurs. Subsequently the dissipative tide raised on Jupiter by Io causes Io's orbit to spiral outwards; Io approaches the 2:1 commensurability with Europa. Io's forced eccentricity increases rapidly to a critical value, and thereafter the resonant interaction causes Europa's orbit to expand at half that of Io's orbit. A fluid core is probably formed as the result of tidal heating. Finally Europa approaches the 2:1 commensurability, angular momentum is transferred from Europa's orbit to Ganymede's, and a steady state is attained. On the basis of the observed three-body resonance amplitude (0.066 deg), it is concluded that three-body resonance may have formed less than 500 million years ago; a measurement of the rate of tidal heating in Io may determine the Q value of both Io and Jupiter. Upper and lower limits for the Jovian Q value of 2 million and 20,000 are suggested.

Bayonet plug with ramp-activated lock

Matched pair of washers with broad surface ramps is locking mechanism in bayonet plug. It can be used where threaded springs and fasteners are impractical because of extreme temperatures or other environmental incompatibility. Matched pair of ramped washers is placed on plug and bayonet inserted. Inner slot of one washer matches contour of plug; this washer is stationary. Inner slot of second washer is circular. When second washer is rotated, washers push against bayonet plug, locking it in place. Retaining wire secures plug.

Loran digital phase-locked loop and RF front-end system error analysis

An analysis of the system performance of the digital phase locked loops (DPLL) and RF front end that are implemented in the MINI-L4 Loran receiver is presented. Three of the four experiments deal with the performance of the digital phase locked loops. The other experiment deals with the RF front end and DPLL system error which arise in the front end due to poor signal to noise ratios. The ability of the DPLLs to track the offsets is studied.

False lock performance of quadriphase receivers

Quadriphase receivers, like biphase receivers, have the ability to false lock on a sideband on the data modulation. The theory associated with this phenomenon for receivers of binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK), using Costas loop demodulation, has recently been documented in the literature. This paper considers the corresponding theory for receivers of balanced quadriphase-shift-keying (QPSK) employing a quadriphase Costas loop (or equivalent fourth-power loop) for demodulation. Specific closed form expressions for false lock performance are developed and numerically evaluated for the particular case of single pole arm filters and an NRZ data format for each of the two statistically independent quadrature modulations.

Optimum design of hybrid phase locked loops

The design procedure of phase locked loops is described in which the analog loop filter is replaced by a digital computer. Specific design curves are given for the step and ramp input changes in phase. It is shown that the designed digital filter depends explicitly on the product of the sampling time and the noise bandwidth of the phase locked loop. This technique of optimization can be applied to the design of digital analog loops for other applications.

Locking mechanism for orthopedic braces

An orthopedic brace locking mechanism is described which under standing or walking conditions cannot be unlocked, however under sitting conditions the mechanism can be simply unlocked so as to permit bending of the patient's knee. Other features of the device include: (1) the mechanism is rendered operable, and inoperable, dependent upon the relative inclination of the brace with respect to the ground; (2) the mechanism is automatically locked under standing or walking conditions and is manually unlocked under sitting conditions; and (3) the mechanism is light in weight and is relatively small in size.

Theory of active mode locking of a semiconductor laser in an external cavity

An analytical treatment is given for the active mode locking of a semiconductor laser in an external resonator. The width of the mode-locked pulses is obtained as a function of the laser and cavity parameters and the amount of frequency detuning. The effects of self-modulation and saturation are included in the treatment. The pulse output is compared with that obtained by a strong modulation of the laser diode with no external cavity.

Locking Nut and Bolt

Threaded fastener locks parts securely together despite together large loosening torques, even under conditions of high temperature and vibration. Positive locking action is suitable for use where conventional fasteners tend to work loose--for example, on high-speed rotating machinery. Bolt, nut and key are joined together so key occupies alined slots in bolt and nut and prevents nut from rotating off bolt.

Transient behavior of an actively mode-locked semiconductor laser diode

Experimental investigation was carried out to study the transient regimes during the buildup and decay of the active mode-locked state in a laser diode. The mode locking was achieved through a sinusoidal modulation of the diode current with the laser in an external cavity. The pulse shape evolution and the time constants for the buildup and decay were determined.

A coupled phase-locked loops system for carrier tracking improvement

A system that couples several phase-locked loops to improve carrier tracking performance is considered. It coherently combines the received carrier signals at geographically separated ground antennas to increase the total effective aperture. The received carrier's phases are automatically aligned to enhance the received carrier signal-to-noise ratio. The system's tracking performance is assessed in terms of rms phase jitter. It is shown that the phase-locked loop in the first receiver, where the carrier arraying is performed, tracks the received carrier phase using the received carrier power from all receivers.

Phase-locked semiconductor laser array with separate contacts

A new monolithic phase-locked semiconductor laser array has been fabricated. Employing two-level metallization, each of the eight elements in the array has a separate contact, thus making it possible to compensate for device nonuniformities and control the near-field and far-field patterns. Threshold currents are approximately 60 mA for each 5-micron-wide laser in the array. Phase locking has been observed via the narrowing of the far-field pattern. Experimental results are compared to those obtained from the same arrays operated with all the lasers connected in parallel.
