Automated X-Ray Tomographic Defect Analysis in High Density Carbon Capsules

High density carbon capsule ablators are of primary interest for National Ignition Facility experiments. Two of the major contributors to hydrodynamic instabilities in these capsules are voids and high-density inclusions, where the quantity and size of these defects can result in lower yields in inertial confinement fusion. To aid in capsule selection, General Atomics developed a LabVIEW analysis routine to quantify these defects based off a large field of view tomographic dataset and provide insight into the quality of the capsule. Furthermore, this analysis determines if there are large voids or inclusions that may affect shot performance and helps rank which capsules should be used.

Flexible Integration of Diverse HVAC Technologies in EnergyPlus via Python-Enabled Workflows

Analysis of advanced controls and novel system types is often not directly feasible in building energy simulation tools. Various techniques extend building energy simulation tool capabilities to allow the use of user-defined scripts and programs, but these approaches have limitations. The EnergyPlus Python plugin offers users new flexibility to use EnergyPlus to call an external Python module at specific points in the simulation, as well as to use Python to call EnergyPlus functionality through an application programming interface (API). This paper presents four case studies leveraging the EnergyPlus Python plugin to facilitate analysis of advanced controls and system types. The use of the Python plugin offers greater modularity and flexibility relative to previous approaches, is less error prone, and is simpler for users to adopt. The Python plugin allows EnergyPlus to be used in a more flexible manner and to accommodate the expanding realm of energy modeling applications.

Implementing the Mars Science Laboratory Terminal Descent Sensor Field Test Campaign

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) will deliver a 900 kg rover to the surface of Mars in August 2012. MSL will utilize a new pulse-Doppler landing radar, the Terminal Descent Sensor (TDS). The TDS employs six narrow-beam antennas to provide unprecedented slant range and velocity performance at Mars to enable soft touchdown of the MSL rover using a unique sky crane Entry, De-scent, and Landing (EDL) technique. Prior to use on MSL, the TDS was put through a rigorous verification and validation (V&V) process. A key element of this V&V was operating the TDS over a series of field tests, using flight-like profiles expected during the descent and landing of MSL over Mars-like terrain on Earth. Limits of TDS performance were characterized with additional testing meant to stress operational modes outside of the expected EDL flight profiles. The flight envelope over which the TDS must operate on Mars encompasses such a large range of altitudes and velocities that a variety of venues were neces-sary to cover the test space. These venues included an F/A-18 high performance aircraft, a Eurocopter AS350 AStar helicopter and 100-meter tall Echo Towers at the China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center. Testing was carried out over a five year period from July 2006 to June 2011. TDS performance was shown, in gen-eral, to be excellent over all venues. This paper describes the planning, design, and implementation of the field test campaign plus results and lessons learned.

Ketone monoester plus high‐dose glucose supplementation before exercise does not affect immediate post‐exercise erythropoietin concentrations versus glucose alone

Abstract The objective of this study was to examine the effect of consuming ketone monoester plus a high dose of carbohydrate from glucose (KE + CHO) on the change in erythropoietin (EPO) concentrations during load carriage exercise compared with carbohydrate (CHO) alone. Using a randomized, crossover design, 12 males consumed KE + CHO (573 mg KE/kg body mass, 110 g glucose) or CHO (110 g glucose) 30 min before 4 miles of self‐paced treadmill exercise (KE + CHO:51 ± 13%, CHO: 52 ± 12% V̇O 2peak ) wearing a weighted vest (30% body mass; 25 ± 3 kg). Blood samples for analysis were obtained under resting fasted conditions before (Baseline) consuming the KE + CHO or CHO supplement and immediately after exercise (Post). βHB increased ( p < 0.05) from Baseline to Post in KE + CHO, with no change in CHO. Glucose and glycerol increased ( p < 0.05) from Baseline to Post in CHO, with no effect of time in KE + CHO. Insulin and lactate increased ( p < 0.05) from Baseline to Post independent of treatment. EPO increased ( p < 0.05) from Baseline to Post in KE + CHO and CHO with no difference between treatments. Although KE + CHO altered βHB, glucose, and glycerol concentrations, results from this study suggest that KE + CHO supplementation before load carriage exercise does not enhance immediate post‐exercise increases in EPO compared with CHO alone.

The Prompt Fission Uranium Neutron Spectrum (PFUNS) Experiment: Critical Configurations and Irradiations

The objective of the Prompt Fission Uranium Neutron Spectrum (PFUNS) experiment is to reduce the uncertainty of the Prompt Fission Neutron Spectrum (PFNS) of 235 U above 8 MeV. The experiment was performed at the DOE National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Nevada National Security Site. To meet the experiment objective, activation foils were placed in a central void region of a critical configuration consisting of concentric highly enriched uranium (HEU) metal hemishells. The set of activation foils were chosen based on threshold reactions to neutron energies across the fission spectrum, but especially those in the high energy tail of the fission spectrum. PFUNS was performed on the Planet critical assembly machine at NCERC and uses the Rocky Flats (RF) HEU hemishells. PFUNS has similarities to the Measurement of Uranium Subcritical and Critical (MUSiC) experiment conducted at NCERC in 2021, which also used RF hemishells, but contains a large central cavity to allow for a sample plate to be inserted. This large void means that much more HEU is needed to achieve a critical configuration (108 kg for PFUNS versus 59 kg for MUSiC). This work describes the 2024 experiment execution of four critical configurations and two irradiations for the PFUNS project.

A new climatology of South American extratropical cyclogenesis with an intercomparison among ERA5 , JRA55 and the Brazilian Navy

Abstract In South America, the most destructive extratropical cyclones occur over the southeastern quadrant of the continent, a region that includes some of the world's largest population centres. However, there are few studies of cyclogenesis in this region, and little is known about how the varying origins of these storms impact subsequent behaviour. By supplementing an observational record with current reanalysis data, this study reveals the general characteristics of cyclones that develop in the lee regions of the Andes and those that develop nearer the Atlantic coast. The comparative climatologies demonstrate that cyclone development in these separate contexts is driven by topography, local atmospheric circulations and basin‐scale climate oscillations. The analysis further reveals a low‐frequency seesaw of lee and coastal cyclogenesis, with cross‐basin ocean temperature differences playing a teleconnectional role.

A Short Survey of Current Reactive Burn Model Capabilities as of Mid-Year 2025

The authors were tasked with writing a concise memo (now a short report) that adequately addresses the current ``state-of-the-art'' in the field of reactive flow modeling and burn models for mid-year 2025, along with identifying some of the modeling gaps. It is assumed that the reader has experience with burn models and running hydrocode simulations, and thus every effort is made to ensure brevity, clarity, and utility, so that this document will serve as a quick and useful reference. Note that “mid-year” was used in the title, as it is possible that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) may significantly impact the field before the year is over.

Navigation performance of the 2018 InSight Mars Lander mission

The NASA InSight spacecraft was launched successfully from Vandenberg Air Force Base on an Atlas V 401 launch vehicle on May 5, 2018 and landed on November 26, 2018. Accurate targeting to the atmospheric entry point by the Navigation team achieved by carefully controlling the final entry flight path angle to -12.0 degrees with a tolerance of +/- 0.21 degrees. This paper will describe how the InSight Navigation team met this difficult task in the presence of frequent unbalanced thrusting for attitude control. The continuous correction for this unplanned ∆V far exceeded pre-launch expectations and proved a challenge to predict accurately.
