Driven Majorana modes: A route to synthetic $p_x +ip_y$ superconductivity

We propose a protocol to realize synthetic $p_x +ip_y$ superconductors in one-dimensional topological systems that host Majorana fermions. By periodically driving a localized Majorana mode across the system, our protocol realizes a topological pumping of Majorana fermions, analogous to the adiabatic Thouless pumping of electrical charges. Importantly, similar to the realization of a Chern insulator through Thouless pumping, we show that pumping of Majorana zero modes could lead to a $p_x +ip_y$ superconductor in the two dimensions of space and synthetic time. The Floquet theory is employed to map the driven one-dimensional system to a two-dimensional synthetic system by considering frequency as a new dimension. We demonstrate such Floquet $p_x +ip_y$ superconductors using the Kitaev $p$-wave superconductor chain, a prototypical 1D topological system, as well as its more realistic realization in the 1D Kondo lattice model as examples. We further show the appearance of Majorana $π$ mode at the Floquet zone boundary in an intermediate drive frequency region. Our work suggests a driven magnetic spiral coupled to a superconductor as a promising platform for the realization of novel topological superconductors.

Gapless Floquet topology

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in insulators and superconductors are known for their robust edge modes, linked to bulk invariants through the bulk-boundary correspondence. While this principle traditionally applies to gapped phases, recent advances have extended it to gapless systems, where topological edge-states persist even in the absence of a bulk gap. We extend this framework to periodically driven chains with chiral symmetry, revealing the existence of topological edge zero and π modes despite the lack of bulk gaps in the quasienergy spectrum. By examining the half-period decomposition of chiral evolutions, we construct topological invariants that circumvent the need to define the Floquet Hamiltonian, making them more suitable for generalization to the gapless regime. We provide explicit examples, including generalizations of the Kitaev chain and related spin models, where localized π modes emerge even when the bulk is gapless at the same quasienergy as the edge modes. Here, we numerically study the effect of interactions, which give a finite lifetime to the edge modes in the thermodynamic limit with the decay rate consistent with Fermi's golden rule.

Low-rank Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Motivated by recent proposals of experimental realization of fast scramblers, we study a family of solvable variants of the ($\textit{q}$ = 4) Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model in which the rank and eigenvalue distribution of the coupling matrix $J_{ ij,kl}$ are tuneable. When the rank is proportional to the number of fermions, the low temperature behavior is sensitive to the eigenvalue distribution. We obtain a complete classification of the possible non-Fermi liquid quantum phases. These include two previously studied phases whose fermion scaling dimension depends continuously on the rank; we show that they are maximally chaotic, but necessitate an extensively degenerate or negative semidefinite coupling matrix. In this work, more generic distributions give rise to “almost Fermi liquids” with a scaling dimension Δ = 1/2, but which differ from a genuine Fermi liquid in quasiparticle decay rate, quantum Lyapunov exponent, and/or specific heat.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Majorana zero modes in Y -shape interacting Kitaev wires

Motivated by the recent experimental realization of minimal Kitaev chains using quantum dots, we investigate the Majorana zero modes (MZM) in Y-shape Kitaev wires. We solve the associated Kitaev models analytically at the sweet spot (t h = Δ) and derive the exact form of MZM wave-functions in this geometry. We observed exotic multi-site MZMs located near the junction center, on the nearby edge sites of each leg. This result is important for potential braiding of Majoranas and the performance of Y-junctions made from arrays of quantum dots. Furthermore, we study the stability of local (single-site) and multi-site MZMs modes in the presence of Coulomb repulsion, using density matrix renormalization group theory. Our local density-of-states calculation shows that these multi-site MZMs are as equally topologically protected as the single-site MZMs when in the presence of Coulomb repulsion or when away from the sweet-spot.

Disorder-induced topological phase transition in a driven Majorana chain

Here, we study a periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model in the presence of disorder. In the clean limit our model exhibits four topological phases corresponding to the existence or nonexistence of edge modes at zero and π quasienergy. When potential disorder is added, the system parameters get renormalized and the system may exhibit a topological phase transition. When starting from the Majorana π mode (MPM) phase, which hosts only edge Majoranas with quasienergy π, disorder induces a transition into a neighboring phase with both π and zero modes on the edges. We characterize the disordered system using (i) exact diagonalization, (ii) Arnoldi mapping onto an effective tight-binding chain, and (iii) topological entanglement entropy.

Excitation spectra of quantum matter without quasiparticles. I. Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Here, we study the low-frequency spectra of complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models at general densities. The analysis applies also to SU(M) magnets with random exchange at large M. The spectral densities are computed by numerical analysis of the saddle-point equations on the real frequency ω axis at zero temperature T. The asymptotic low-ω behaviors are found to be in excellent agreement with the scaling dimensions of irrelevant operators which perturb the conformally invariant critical states. Of possible experimental interest is our computation of the universal spin spectral weight of the SU(M) magnets at low ω and T; this includes a contribution from the time reparametrization mode, which is the boundary graviton of the holographic dual. This analysis is extended to a random t-J model in the following paper [M. Tikhanovskaya et al., following paper, Phys. Rev. B 103, 075142 (2021)].

Majorana bound states with chiral magnetic textures

The aim of this Tutorial is to give a pedagogical introduction into realizations of Majorana fermions, usually termed as Majorana bound states (MBSs), in condensed matter systems with magnetic textures. We begin by considering the Kitaev chain model of “spinless” fermions and show how two “half” fermions can appear at chain ends due to interactions. By considering this model and its two-dimensional generalization, we emphasize intricate relation between topological superconductivity and possible realizations of MBS. We further discuss how “spinless” fermions can be realized in more physical systems, e.g., by employing the spin-momentum locking. Next, we demonstrate how magnetic textures can be used to induce synthetic or fictitious spin–orbit interactions, and, thus, stabilize MBS. We describe a general approach that works for arbitrary textures and apply it to skyrmions. We show how MBS can be stabilized by elongated skyrmions, certain higher order skyrmions, and chains of skyrmions. We also discuss how braiding operations can be performed with MBS stabilized on magnetic skyrmions. Furthermore, this Tutorial is aimed at students at the graduate level.

Understanding Majorana braiding in superconductors with a fixed total number of particles

Mean-field one-dimensional topological superconductors host edge Majorana zero modes (MZMs) that encode a topologically protected ground-state degeneracy and enable robust braiding operations within this subspace. Mean-field states lack definite particle number and thus cannot represent isolated systems. Nevertheless, projecting them onto fixed particle number can yield good approximations to an isolated superconductor ground state. In earlier work [Sajith et al., Phys. Rev. B 109, 184509 (2024)] we showed that the projected Kitaev wave function of a single wire preserves some important mean-field features, such as the zero-energy spectral peaks near the wire edges. However, uniqueness of the fixed-number ground state does not allow for any nontrivial operations in the ground-state subspace. To overcome this limitation, here we consider the case of multiple wires with a conserved total charge, using the same approach. In the limit of vanishing interwire coupling, this system has a macroscopic ground-state degeneracy. We show how this degeneracy is resolved by coherent single-particle tunneling, and identify special many-body states which play the same role as the MZM parity states in the mean field. In this work, we demonstrate how braiding operations can be implemented and discuss both intrinsic and extrinsic limits on their fidelity.

Thermoelectric power of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev islands: Probing Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in quantum matter experiments

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes electrons with random and all-to-all interactions and realizes a many-body state without quasiparticle excitations and a nonvanishing extensive entropy $S_0$ in the zero-temperature limit. Its low-energy theory coincides with the low-energy theory of near-extremal charged black holes with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $S_0$. Several mesoscopic experimental configurations realizing SYK quantum dynamics over a significant intermediate temperature scale have been proposed. We investigate quantum thermoelectric transport in such configurations and describe low-temperature crossovers out of SYK criticality into regimes either with Fermi liquid behavior, with a Coulomb blockade, or criticality associated with Schwarzian quantum gravity fluctuations. In this work, our results show that thermopower measurements can serve as a direct probe for $S_0$.

Thermal Probes of Phonon-Coupled Kitaev Spin Liquids: From Accurate Extraction of Quantized Edge Transport to Anyon Interferometry

Recent theoretical studies inspired by experiments on the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl 3 highlight the nontrivial impact of phonons on the thermal Hall conductivity of chiral topological phases. Here, we introduce mixed mesoscopic-macroscopic devices that allow refined thermal-transport probes of non-Abelian spin liquids with Ising topological order. These devices feature a quantum-coherent region with quantized or negligible phonon conductance, flanked by macroscopic lobes that facilitate efficient thermalization between chiral Majorana edge modes and bulk phonons. We show that our devices enable (i) accurate determination of the quantized thermal Hall conductivity, (ii) identification of non-Abelian Ising anyons via the temperature dependence of the thermal conductance, and, most interestingly, (iii) single-anyon detection through heat-based anyon interferometry. Analogous results apply broadly to phonon-coupled chiral topological orders.

Planar thermal Hall effect of topological bosons in the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl 3

The honeycomb magnet α-RuCl 3 has attracted considerable interest because it is proximate to the Kitaev Hamiltonian whose excitations are Majoranas and vortices. The thermal Hall conductivity κ xy of Majorana fermions is predicted to be half-quantized. Half-quantization of κxy/T (T, temperature) was recently reported, but this observation has proven difficult to reproduce. Here, we report detailed measurements of κ xy on α-RuCl3 with the magnetic field B ∥ a (zigzag axis). In our experiment, κ xy /T is observed to be strongly temperature dependent between 0.5 and 10 K. We show that its temperature profile matches the distinct form expected for topological bosonic modes in a Chern-insulator-like model. Our analysis yields magnon band energies in agreement with spectroscopic experiments. At high B, the spin excitations evolve into magnon-like modes with a Chern number of ~1. In conclusion, the bosonic character is incompatible with half-quantization of κ xy /T.

Fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes

Braiding and fusion of Majorana zero modes are key elements of any future topological Majorana-based quantum computer. In this article, we investigate the fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes in the spinless Kitaev model, as well as in a spinful model describing magnet-superconductor hybrid structures. We consider various scenarios allowing us to reproduce the fusion rules of the Ising anyon model. Particular emphasis is given to the charge of the fermion obtained after fusing two Majorana zero modes: as long as it remains on the superconductor, charge quantization is absent. When moving the fermion to a nonsuperconducting region, such as a quantum dot, nearly quantized charge can be measured. Our findings confirm for both platforms that fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes can indeed be used for the readout of Majorana qubits.

Chemical tuning of a honeycomb magnet through a critical point

BaCo 2⁢ (AsO 4 )⁢ 2 (BCAO) has seen extensive study since its initial identification as a proximate Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate. Thought to be described by the highly anisotropic XXZ-J 1 -J 3 model, the ease with which magnetic order is suppressed in the system indicates proximity to a spin liquid phase. Upon chemical tuning via partial arsenic substitution with vanadium, we show an initial suppression of long-range incommensurate order in the BCAO system to T ≈ 3.0 K, followed by increased spin freezing at higher substitution levels. Between these two regions, at around 10% substitution, the system is shown to pass through a critical point where the competing J 1 /J 3 exchange interactions become more balanced, producing a more complex magnetic ground state, likely stabilized by quantum fluctuations. Here, this state shows how slight compositional change in magnetically frustrated systems may be leveraged to tune ground state degeneracies and potentially realize a quantum spin liquid state.

Dynamics of local magnetic moments induced by itinerant Weyl electrons

We derive the effective interactions between local magnetic moments which are mediated by Weyl electrons in magnetic topological semimetals. The resulting spin dynamics is governed by the induced Heisenberg, Kitaev, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions with extended range and oscillatory dependence on the distance between the spins. These interactions are realized in multiple competing channels shaped by the multitude of Weyl nodes in the electron spectrum. Microscopic spins need to be spatially modulated with a channel-dependent wave vector in order to take advantage of the interactions. The DM vector is parallel to the displacement between the two interacting spins, and requires the presence of Weyl electron Fermi surfaces. Here, we also derive the Weyl-induced chiral three-spin interaction in the presence of an external magnetic field. This interaction has an extended range as well, and acts upon the spatially modulated spins in various channels. Its tendency is to produce a skyrmion lattice or a chiral spin liquid which exhibits topological Hall effect. Ultimately, the theory developed here addresses magnetic dynamics in relativistic metals even when chiral magnetism is microscopically precluded. We discuss insights into the ordered state of the magnetic Weyl semimetal NdAlSi.

Scrambling versus relaxation in Fermi and non-Fermi liquids

In this work, we compute the Lyapunov exponent characterizing quantum scrambling in a family of generalized Sachdev- Ye-Kitaev models, which can be tuned between different low temperature states from Fermi liquids, through non-Fermi liquids, to fast scramblers. The analytic calculation, controlled by a small coupling constant and large $\textit{N}$, allows us to clarify the relations between the quasiparticle relaxation rate $\textit{1/τ}$ and the Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ characterizing scrambling. In the Fermi liquid states we find that the quasiparticle relaxation rate dictates the Lyapunov exponent. In non-Fermi liquids, where $1/τ \gg T$, we find that $λ_L$ is always $\textit{T}$ linear with a prefactor that is independent of the coupling constant in the limit of weak coupling. Instead it is determined by a scaling exponent that characterizes the relaxation rate. $λ_L$ approaches the general upper bound 2$\textit{πT}$ at the transition to a fast scrambling state. Finally, in a marginal Fermi liquid state the exponent is linear in temperature with a prefactor that vanishes as a nonanalytic function ~$g\text{ln}(1/g)$ of the coupling constant $\textit{g}$.

Precursor of pair-density wave in doping Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice

Abstract We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction J K , which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the t - J K model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has a dominant quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. In the pairing channel, the even-parity superconducting correlation is dominant with d -wave-like symmetry, which oscillates in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the example where a pair-density wave is the leading instability in the pairing channel on the honeycomb lattice.

The quantum Hall effect at a weak magnetic field

Using a weak limit for the hopping integral in one direction in the Hofstadter model, we show that the fermion states in the gaps of the spectrum are determined within the Kitaev chain. The proposed approach allows us to study the behavior of Chern insulators (CI) in different classes of symmetry. We consider the Hofstadter model on the square and honeycomb lattices in the case of rational and irrational magnetic fluxes ϕ, and discuss the behavior of the Hall conductance at a weak magnetic field in a sample of finite size. We show that in the semiclassical limit at the center of the fermion spectrum, the Bloch states of fermions turn into chiral Majorana fermion liquid when the magnetic scale (1/ϕ) is equal to the sample size N. We are talking about the dielectric–metal phase transition, which is determined by the behavior of the Landau levels in 2D fermion systems in a transverse magnetic field. When a magnetic scale, which determines the wave function of fermions, exceeds the size of the sample, a jump in the longitudinal conductance occurs. The wave function describes non-localized states of fermions, the sample becomes a conductor, the system changes from the dielectric state to the metallic one. It is shown, that at 1∕ϕ>N the quantum Hall effect and the Landau levels are not realized, which makes possibility to study the behavior of CI in irrational magnetic fluxes.
