Life Cycle Analysis and Life Cycle Costing for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management and Materials Redeployment to Support ARPA-E’s Potential Program on Waste to Energy and Materials

Municipal solid waste infrastructure in the United States contains complex supply chains to transport, sort, and sequester waste. This project developed models to estimate the environmental and economic costs of waste infrastructure in the U.S. using data from several municipalities. Life cycle costing (LCC) models were developed for waste management relevant supply chain steps, including waste collection, sorting, landfilling, waste-to-energy, ash processing, and recycling. A waste-to-materials and energy (WTM&E) life cycle analysis (LCA) and LCC dashboard was developed in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and an LCC tool was developed for additional analysis.

Microbiome Metadata Management

Tremendous amounts of microbiome omics data have been generated in recent years, which holds great potential for large-scale studies and metaanalyses. The utility of these datasets is unfortunately limited by their lack of searchability and interoperability. Thorough, standardized metadata is essential for unlocking the scientific discovery potential of disparate datasets. Several national and international initiatives exist to gather and standardize microbiome omics data to improve accessibility and reusability. Continuing to improve consistency in metadata will allow advances in automation and reduction in manual mapping between databases.

2019 Megasun Illumination System. Modifications and Operating Procedure Updates [Slides]

The original operating procedure was nearly 20 years old, though it was on a semi-annual review schedule. Some electrical categories had changed, as well as their risk management assessments. The IWD did not reflect these updated guidelines. No injuries have been reported during nearly 20 years of operation (not a bad record), however, several abnormal conditions came to surface during our Hazard Analysis conversations. One of which included an oil based capacitor malfunction which cracked it’s housing and leaked oil within the 2001 system. Our training and qualifications were updated to reflect LANL’s current standards.

Data Archive and Portal (DAP) Platform for Solid Phase Processing Technologies

The scale and speed of data generated by modern scientific experiments have constantly challenged the research community to store, curate, manage and optimally use it to drive scientific discoveries. In this work, we have developed a data archive and portal (DAP) platform including analytics capabilities to collect, curate, and manage data and metadata stream for solid phase processing (SPP) techniques. We successfully hosted around ~347K files of data related to processing parameters, microscopic images, and spectroscopic data related to solid phase processing. The DAP platform for SPP will establish an enduring capability to support machine learning and grow collaboration at the intersection of materials science and data science.

Gleaming new facility delivers expertise now and into the future

On Tuesday, July 27, leadership from the Prototype Fabrication (PF) division welcomed a band of machinists, managers, project managers, members of Lab leadership, and NNSA to celebrate the official opening of a facility like no other at the Laboratory, and unique across the globe. The Mark Quality Manufacturing Center (MQMC) was developed throughout 2020 in support of weapons production capabilities, and is the Lab’s new home for high-precision non-nuclear components manufacturing. Work has been occurring there for several months, but with pandemic restrictions easing, it was finally time to celebrate.

UPC++ v1.0 Specification, Revision 2021.9.0

UPC++ is a C++ library providing classes and functions that support Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming. The key communication facilities in UPC++ are one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). All communication operations are syntactically explicit and default to non-blocking; asynchrony is managed through the use of futures, promises and continuation callbacks, enabling the programmer to construct a graph of operations to execute asynchronously as high-latency dependencies are satisfied. A global pointer abstraction provides system-wide addressability of shared memory, including host and accelerator memories. The parallelism model is primarily process-based, but the interface is thread-safe and designed to allow efficient and expressive use in multi-threaded applications. The interface is designed for extreme scalability throughout, and deliberately avoids design features that could inhibit scalability.

A standards perspective on genomic data reusability and reproducibility

Genomic and metagenomic sequence data provides an unprecedented ability to re-examine findings, offering a transformative potential for advancing research, developing computational tools, enhancing clinical applications, and fostering scientific collaboration. However, effective and ethical reuse of genomics data is hampered by numerous technical and social challenges. The International Microbiome and Multi’Omics Standards Alliance (IMMSA, https://www.microbialstandards.org/) and the Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC, https://gensc.org) hosted a 5-part seminar series “A Year of Data Reuse” in 2024 to explore challenges and opportunities of data reuse and reproducibility across disparate domains of the genomic sciences. Addressing these challenges will require a multifaceted approach, including common metadata reporting, clear communication, standardized protocols, improved data management infrastructure, ethical guidelines, and collaborative policies that prioritize transparency and accessibility. We offer strategies to enable responsible and technically feasible data reuse, recognition of data reproducibility challenges, and emphasizing the importance of cross-disciplinary efforts in the pursuit of open science and data-driven innovation.

Overview and Current Progress of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Criticality Safety Program Training and Education Program

Since 2011, the US Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) has been providing a two-week nuclear criticality safety (NCS) practitioner course to support the training and qualification of new NCS staff. In 2013, an NCS Manager’s course was developed for process supervisors, managers, regulators, and other professionals with NCS-related responsibilities, and, in 2017, an additional course was proposed for Criticality Safety Officers (CSOs). In addition to hands-on training, other NCSP-funded tasks include training on sensitivity/uncertainty methods, NCS resource pipeline tasks, development of NCS guides, maintenance and development of Nuclear Criticality Safety Education Training (NCSET) modules and designing of a new subcritical assembly for hands-on training purposes. This paper provides an overview of the NCSP training and education program. The status of the NCSP hands-on training program will also be provided.
