Energy Auditor Job Task Analysis

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is contracted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) to develop and maintain the resources under the Guidelines for Home Energy Professionals (GHEP) project. The purpose of the GHEP project is to increase the quality of work conducted for residential energy retrofits in the United States through the WAP network and other residential retrofit programs. The HEP certifications support WAP and the broader residential home performance industry through the credentialing process and development of defined JTAs for Energy Auditors (EA) and Quality Control Inspectors (QCI). This report outlines the most recent updates (2022) to the EA JTA.

Potential impact of work from home jobs on residential energy bills: A case study in phoenix, AZ, USA

Nearly one-third of U.S. households face challenges paying energy bills. During the day, many residents have routine access to cooled environments provided by others—employers, shopping centers, and other public buildings. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, has significantly shifted the cost burden of air conditioning in hot cities. Specifically, during the pandemic, many companies either laid off employees or put them in work-from-home (WFH) assignments. Large tech companies are already promoting WFH as a long-term option for their employees, even after the pandemic. This change in the nature of the workforce might reduce daily travel expenses for workers, but could also significantly increase residential energy bills, particularly during summer in very hot climates. Here, this study uses building energy simulations to quantify the potential residential energy bill penalties resulting from WFH for typical residences in Phoenix. Four building archetypes are used in this study to represent variations in building vintage, occupancy, and characteristics. The results show that, for some single-family residences in Phoenix, WFH can increase annual energy bills by more than $1100 (up to a 70% increase). The study also demonstrates that building performance enhancement retrofit measures have the potential to reduce this WFH energy bill penalty for the existing buildings substantially.

Operating advanced scientific instruments with AI agents that learn on the job

Advanced scientific user facilities, such as next generation X-ray light sources and self-driving laboratories, are revolutionizing scientific discovery by automating routine tasks and enabling rapid experimentation and characterizations. However, these facilities must continuously evolve to support new experimental workflows, adapt to diverse user projects, and meet growing demands for more intricate instruments and experiments. This continuous development introduces significant operational complexity, necessitating a focus on usability, reproducibility, and intuitive human-instrument interaction. In this work, we explore the integration of agentic AI, powered by Large Language Models (LLMs), as a transformative tool to achieve this goal. We present our approach to developing a human-in-the-loop pipeline for operating advanced instruments including an X-ray nanoprobe beamline and an autonomous robotic station dedicated to the design and characterization of materials. Specifically, we evaluate the potential of various LLMs as trainable scientific assistants for orchestrating complex, multi-task workflows, which also include multimodal data, optimizing their performance through optional human input and iterative learning. We demonstrate the ability of AI agents to bridge the gap between advanced automation and user-friendly operation, paving the way for more adaptable and intelligent scientific facilities.

Data transfer for STAR grid jobs

The Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) is a multipurpose experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) with the primary goal to study the formation and properties of the quark-gluon plasma. STAR is an international collaboration of member institutions and laboratories from around the world. Yearly data-taking period produces PBytes of raw data collected by the experiment. STAR primarily uses its dedicated facility at BNL to process this data, but has routinely leveraged distributed systems, both high throughput (HTC) and high performance (HPC) computing clusters, to significantly augment the processing capacity available to the experiment. The ability to automate the efficient transfer of large data sets on reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure is critical for any large-scale distributed processing campaign. For more than a decade, STAR computing has relied upon GridFTP with its x509-based authentication to build such data transfer systems and integrate them into its larger production workflow. The end of support by the community for both GridFTP and the x509 standard requires STAR to investigate other approaches to meet its distributed processing needs. In this study we investigate two multi-purpose data distribution systems, Globus.org and XRootD, as alternatives to GridFTP. We compare both their performance and the ease by which each service is integrated into the type of secure and automated data transfer systems STAR has previously built using GridFTP. The presented approach and study may be applicable to other distributed data processing use cases beyond STAR.

Tribal Renewable Energy: Bishop Paiute Tribe Youth Solar Job Training Development (Final Report)

This Project provided workshops and hands on opportunities for young tribal adults to gain education, training, and employment in the solar industry; including 1 youth to meet the eligibility requirements for the NABCEP Solar Installer Exam. 10 tribal youth, ages 16-24, attended workshops focused on learning solar fundamentals and then applied those learned skills to hands on training, installing solar on 2 tribal homes. GRID provided certificates authenticating their volunteer hours and skills learned. This program of youth training really excited the tribal leadership as well as the tribal youth. This opportunity was in alignment with the tribe’s Strategic Energy Plan, and supported tribal self-sufficiency, a path to economic development and for the youth it also represented the environmental stewardship the tribe believes in.
