Investigation of environmental change pattern in Japan. Investigation of variations in the prominent oceanic current, Kuroshio

The author has identified the following significant results. It was confirmed that band 4 and 5 had some information as to the sea surface, such as spreading of coastal waters or eddy-like motion of surface water. It was concluded that the front line along the coast from Kumano-nada to Shiono-misaki in the monochromatic prints and in the pseudocolor images was a boundary between coastal waters and offshore water. Most of Ise Bay was covered by polluted water, having salinity values less than 30%, high water color scale of 6 to 8, and transparency less than 5 m.

Investigation of environmental change pattern in Japan. Investigation of the ecological environment index from observation of the regional vegetation cover and their growing condition

The author has identified the following significant results. Practical use of recognition results of LANDSAT data as the base map of the field survey or the retouching work of vegetation and land use has the effective benefit to cut down the cost, labor, and time lower than 10% of a conventional method. Correct and detailed vegetation maps were prepared using combined interpretation of repetition of data of different seasons at warm and temperate forested areas.

On the photographic processing and digital texture for remote sensing of Kujukuri Coast of Chiba in Japan

Remote sensing of various coastal phenomena on the Kujukuri Coast and Kashimanada Coast was done by the use of aircraft for the purpose of investigating the characteristics of shore reefs and floating sand, and the depth of the sea. A multispectral camera and a video ITV camera were used as sensors. The first flight was over the Kashimanada and Kujukuri Coasts and the next flight was over the Katsuura Bay. The shape of shore reefs, the state of floating sand, the depth of the sea, etc., are represented by equidensitographs using texture. The interval of density slices is 0.05. Correlations between the textures represented by equidensitographs, digital graphs and analog display are estimated.

The behavior of a convergent plate boundary - Crustal deformation in the South Kanto district, Japan

The northwesternmost part of the Sagami trough, a part of the Philippine Sea-Eurasian plate boundary, was ruptured during the great South Kanto earthquake in 1923. Very extensive and frequent geodetic measurements of crustal deformation have been made in the South Kanto district since the 1890's, and these constitute the most complete data set on crustal movements in the world. These data were reanalyzed and interpreted and according to our interpretation indicate the following sequence of events. The coseismic movements were due to oblique thrust and right lateral slip of about 8 m on a fault outcropping at the base of the Sagami trough. This was followed by postseismic deformation resulting from reversed afterslip of 20-60 cm that occurred at an exponentially decaying rate in time. The interseismic deformation is produced by steady subduction at a rate of about 1.8 cm/yr. During subduction the top 10-15 km of the plate boundary is apparently locked, while deeper parts slip aseismically at an irregular rate. No significant precursory deformation was observed. The recurrence time for 1923 type earthquakes is 200-300 years. The Boso and Miura peninsulas are broken into a series of fault-bound blocks that move semi-independently of the surrounding region. The subduction zone itself, where it is exposed on land, is shown to be a wide zone encompassing several faults that are active at different times.

Radio propagation prediction services in Japan

Japanese prediction services for HF radio communications are outlined in relation to prediction method, performance and evaluation. The current prediction is based on the CCIR interim method with some modifications matching to a computer system. The principal service is the monthly median prediction issued regularly three months in advance for various communication circuits. A daily prediction for short distance circuits is being prepared by using real time ionospheric sounding data. An evaluation theory and practice is expected to be introduced in the future prediction service.

Photovoltaic research and development in Japan

The status of the Japanese photovoltaic (PV) R&D activities was surveyed through literature searches, private communications, and site visits in 1982. The results show that the Japanese photovoltaic technology is maturing rapidly, consistent with the steady government funding under the Sunshine Project. Two main thrusts of the Project are: (1) completion of the solar panel production pilot plants using cast ingot and sheet silicon materials, and (2) development of large area amorphous silicon solar cells with acceptable efficiency (10 to 12%). An experimental automated solar panel production plant rated at 500 kW/yr is currently under construction for the Sunshine Project for completion in March 1983. Efficiencies demonstrated by experimental large are amorphous silicon solar cells are approaching 8%. Small area amorphous silicon solar cells are, however, currently being mass produced and marketed by several companies at an equivalent annual rate of 2 MW/yr for consumer electronic applications. There is no evidence of an immediate move by the Japanese PV industry to enter extensively into the photovoltaic power market, domestic or otherwise. However, the photovoltaic technology itself could become ready for such an entry in the very near future, especially by making use of advanced process automation technologies.

Snowmelt Runoff Model in Japan

The preliminary Japanese snowmelt runoff model was modified so that all the input variables arc of the antecedent days and the inflow of the previous day is taken into account. A few LANDSAT images obtained in the past were effectively used to verify and modify the depletion curve induced from the snow water equivalent distribution at maximum stage and the accumulated degree days at one representative point selected in the basin. Together with the depletion curve, the relationship between the basin ide daily snowmelt amount and the air temperature at the point above are exhibited homograph form for the convenience of the model user. The runoff forecasting procedure is summarized.

Long term changes in cosmic ray diurnal variations observed by ion chambers in Hong Kong and Japan

Yearly average solar diurnal variations of cosmic ray ion chamber data are inspected from a view point of the eleven and the 22 year solar activity cycle modulations. Ion chamber data and neutron data from various stations are added. From an inspection of observed data, a simple approximation that the 11 year and the 22 year variations of the solar diurnal variation are along 18-hour and 12-hour axes, respectively is proposed. The 18-hour component of diurnal variation in the 11 year cycle increases toward the solar active years. The 12-hour component is enhanced when the solar general magnetic field is parallel to the rotation vector, and is almost zero for the other state. The transition occurs when the amplitude of the 18-hour component is greater owing to the transition of the field during the maximum phase of solar activity. The 22 year shift is consistent with the drift modulation model in heliosphere.

Japan's participation in space station design: Feasibility study of GaAs solar cells for space station applications

The report gives the results of feasibility studies and a cost analysis done on GaAs solar battery cells for space stations. The studies and their results are as follows: (1) Cell size - The 2 x 4 cm cell size was found superior to the 4 x 4 cm cell; (2) Manufacturing technology - Overall, LPE crystal growth was found more suitable than MO-CVD. Current technology for post-growth processes and applying large-area cover glass can be used with few or no modifications; (3) Cell assemblies - Tests for mechanical and thermal stresses encountered from assembly through operation are recommended; (4) Procuring materials - Steps should be taken to avoid sharp price increases due to a speculative gallium market. There are no problems with arsenic materials; (5) Production facilities - The capital investment needed remains to be determined, but a working area of 4000 m2 will be required; (6) Cell costs to be determined; (7) Cell development-supply plan - Two-year lead time will be needed to develop the necessary technology and prepare for production.
