Polyamide-Based Ion Exchange Membranes: Cation-Selective Transport through Water Purification Membranes

Ion-selective membranes are necessary components of many electrochemical systems including fuel cells, electrolyzers, redox flow batteries, and electrodialyzers. Perfluorinated sulfonated membranes (PFSMs) dominate these applications due to their excellent combination of fast ion transport, stability, and processability. However, perfluorinated cation exchange membranes (CEMs) are expensive, and their production process involves chemistry that generates toxic perfluorinated chemicals. The development of affordable, nonfluorinated membranes with a competitive combination of high ion selectivity, transport, and stability could help enable the widespread use of the technologies listed above while hastening the development of emerging electrochemical systems, including aqueous alkaline CO 2 sorbent regeneration. To this end, we pursue the use of thin-film composite polyamide (PA-TFCs) membranes–those that typically find application in reverse osmosis and nanofiltration desalination–as cation-selective exchange membranes. Given their negative surface charge under neutral-to-alkaline conditions, PA-TFCs can serve as effective CEMs in these pH regimes. We prepared a series of PA-TFCs from traditional monomers (trimesoyl chloride and piperazine) and compared their thicknesses, charge densities, water transport properties, ion transport properties, and long-term stability in a high pH environment to traditional CEMs (Nafion and FKE) and commercial nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes. We find that some of the best-performing PA-TFC membranes have similar resistances and Na + transference numbers compared to Nafion 117 in Na 2 SO 4 and NaHCO 3 -containing solutions. This proof-of-principle study suggests that further optimization of PA-TFCs could enable cost-effective ion exchange membrane alternatives to PFSMs.

Ion exchange selectivity for cross-linked polyacrylic acid

The ion separation factors for 21 common metal ions with cross-linked polyacrylic acid were determined as a function of pH and the percent of the cross-linked polyacrylic acid neutralized. The calcium ion was used as a reference. At a pH of 5 the decreasing order of affinity of the ions for the cross-linked polyacrylic acid was found to be: Hg++, Fe+++, Pb++, Cr+++, Cu++, Cd++, Al+++, Ag+, Zn++, Ni++, Mn++, Co++, Ca++, Sr++, Ba++, Mg++, K+, Rb+, Cs+, Na+, and Li+. Members of a chemical family exhibited similar selectivities. The Hg++ ion appeared to be about a million times more strongly bound than the alkali metal ions. The relative binding of most of the metal ions varied with pH; the very tightly and very weakly bound ions showed the largest variations with pH. The calcium ion-hydrogen ion equilibrium was perturbed very little by the presence of the other ions. The separation factors and selectivity coefficients are discussed in terms of equilibrium and thermodynamic significance.

Ion-exchange chromatography separates activities synthesizing and degrading fructose 2,6-bisphosphate from C3 and C4 leaves but not from rat liver

Fructose-6-phosphate,2-kinase and fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase were separated on the basis of charge from leaves of C3 (spinach, lettuce, and pea) and C4 (sorghum and amaranthus) plants but not from rat liver--a tissue known to contain a bifunctional enzyme with both activities. [2-32P]Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate binding experiments also suggest that the major forms of these activities reside on different proteins in leaves.

Channel waveguides in glass via silver-sodium field-assisted ion exchange

Multimode channel waveguides have been formed in sodium aluminosilicate glass by field-assisted diffusion of Ag(+) ions from vacuum-evaporated Ag films. The two-dimensional refractive index profiles of the waveguides were controlled by varying the diffusion time, the diffusion temperature, and the electric field strength. Estimates of the diffusion rate through a strip aperture were obtained, assuming the electric field was strong 120-240 V/mm. The maximum change in refractive index in the sodium aluminosilicate glasses was estimated near 65 percent of the change in soda-lime silicate glass. The physical properties of the glasses are given in a table.

Channeling Engineering of Hydroxide Ion Exchange Polymers and Reinforced Membranes

In this project, a team of researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute developed high performance alkaline conductors which can improve efficiency and lower cost of energy storage and conversion technology. The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute team has developed a highly ion conductive, chemically stable, and mechanically durable alkaline membrane materials. Such membranes will serve as a critical component in electrochemical devices when energy was generated from renewable sources (e.g., sun and wind) or hydrogen fuel. The use of alkaline membrane in electrochemical reactions allows to replace expensive platinum catalyst to less expensive, earth abundant metals as catalysts, offering huge economic advantages in renewable energy technology.
