IRIS: High-fidelity Perception Sensor Modeling for Closed-Loop Planetary Simulations

Perception plays a key role in autonomous and semi-autonomous planetary exploration vehicles. For instance, landers can use computer vision techniques for identifying safe landing locations, aerial vehicles use cameras as navigation sensors, and planetary rovers use them for localization and hazard detection. Engineering simulations of such systems requires the accurate modeling of perception and vision sensors for simulating autonomy scenarios. In addition, the modeling of sensors for landers, aerial and ground vehicles requires the ability to handle large and high-resolution terrains, the accurate modeling of illumination, hi-fidelity rendering via ray/path tracing and the inclusion of sensor characteristics. Vision sensor models strive to simulate sensor reality by using physics principles to model the interaction of light and objects. Furthermore, high frame rate performance is highly desirable for in-the-loop simulations involving vehicle dynamics and control software. In this paper we describe a new sensor modeling capability called Inter-planetary Rendering for Imaging and Sensors (IRIS) that meets these requirements for the real-time and high-fidelity simulation of vision sensors for planetary aerospace and robotics applications.

IRIS-HEP Strategic Plan for the Next Phase of Software Upgrades for HL-LHC Physics

The quest to understand the fundamental building blocks of nature and their interactions is one of the oldest and most ambitious of human scientific endeavors. CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) represents a huge step forward in this quest. The discovery of the Higgs boson, the observation of exceedingly rare decays of $B$ mesons, and stringent constraints on many viable theories of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) demonstrate the great scientific value of the LHC physics program. The next phase of this global scientific project will be the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) which will collect data starting circa 2029 and continue through the 2030s. The primary science goal is to search for physics beyond the SM and, should it be discovered, to study its implications. In the HL-LHC era, the ATLAS and CMS experiments will record around 100 times as many collisions as were used to discover the Higgs boson (and at twice the energy). Both NSF and DOE are making large detector upgrade investments so the HL-LHC can operate in this high-rate environment. Similar investment in software R&D for acquiring, managing, processing and analyzing HL-LHC data is critical to maximize the return-on-investment in the upgraded accelerator and detectors. This report presents a strategic plan for a possible second 5-year funded phase (2023 through 2028) for the Institute for Research and Innovation in Software for High Energy Physics (IRIS-HEP) which will close remaining software and computing gaps to deliver HL-LHC science.

Abundances of Jupiter's Trace Hydrocarbons from Voyager and Cassini. Data Tables: Voyager IRIS Observations Planetary and Space Science, Forthcoming 2010

The following six tables give the retrieved temperatures and volume mixing ratios of C2H2 and C2H6 and the formal errors on these results from the retrieval, as described in the manuscript. These are in the form of two-dimensional tables, specified on a latitudinal and vertical grid. The first column is the pressure in bar, and the second column gives the altitude in kilometers calculated from hydrostatic equilibrium, and applies to the equatorial profile only. The top row of the table specifies the planetographic latitude.

IRI Technology Landscape – A survey of re-usable components and methodologies

This document describes technical implementation details on network access schemes connecting API-driven workflows to supercomputer centers. API-driven workflows are a central theme in connected computing, since they bring the terminal-mainframe' access pattern present since the 1970s up to the task of interfacing with modern web browser technologies. Both security (HTTPS/TLS/IPSec/VPNs/public key cryptography/digital signatures) and network protocol stacks (HTTP-REST APIs, tokens, gRPC, SRTP) have evolved to the point where implementing API-driven workflows is possible using stable, secure off-the-shelf software.
