INDEN Fissile Actinide Issues [Slides]

This presentation addresses the outlook for the International Nuclear Data Evaluation Network (INDEN), specifically regarding general issues that have been solved, including Thermal Neutron Constants (TNC) and Prompt Fission Neutron Spectra (PFNS). Other topics discussed include outstanding issues in fissile evaluations, comments on the RPI quasi-differential experiment, and reaction rate testing of trial evaluations in fast assemblies. The presentation concludes by discussing how INDEN interactions strongly helped to find deficiencies in existing evaluations and highlighted potential solutions to existing challenges, that updated trial evaluations for U-235, U-233, Pu-239 are available for testing, that further work is expected on U-235, Pu-239, and U-233, and that performance was tested on the ICSBEP and/or SINBAD benchmarks, during which significant improvement was demonstrated. The INDEN scheme of international collaboration on nuclear data evaluation is working well.

Procedure for Creating, Reviewing, and Submitting Input Files into the Benchmark Library

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has a number of criticality benchmark input files, modeled for use with MCNP, developed and maintained by various organizations including the Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Division, XCP-3, and XCP-5. The purpose of this procedure is to standardize input file creation, review, and maintenance. This procedure incorporates existing practices used by IRSN as documented in the original report and the translation from French in addition to practices used by the LANL NCS Division as documented in. The report relates to input files used for the validation of the continuous energy Monte Carlo code MCNP6 but is general enough to be extended to other codes. This report describes the procedure on how to prepare and use benchmarks (taken mainly from the ICSBEP Handbook) for the validation of calculation routes. In particular, this report describes the procedure to follow in the creation of the input files and their integration in the experimental validation databases.

Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Experiments Execution Plan (IER-518 CED-3a)

As part of the experiment design and planning, the critical experiment design team (CEDT), as well as additional stakeholders, convened a series of meetings to discuss the goals and requirements of execution for this experiment. The slides from these meetings are attached in Appendix A. The following sections summarize the outcome of those discussions and present the planned experimental configurations and measurements. The stated goals of this experiment are as follows: 1) Measure time-tagged list-mode data for configurations exceeding neutron multiplication of 100; 2) Provide intercomparison between LLNL, LANL, and IRSN detector systems and methodologies; 3) Generate experiment execution report(s) useful to a fundamental physics benchmark for the ICSBEP; 4) Leverage existing critical experiment and detector system benchmarks to limit required modeling and uncertainty analysis.

PMT-004 Validation Testing for Thermal Scattering Laws and Some Interesting Temperature-Dependent Implications [Slides]

This presentation finds that PMT-004 has four new benchmark cases highly sensitive to PE TSL (2 cases) and PMMA TSL (2 Cases). Additionally discovered was that the PE cases were well predicted using MCNP6.2 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. PMMA cases overpredicted by approximately 0.6-0.7% in k eff likely due to the lack of integral benchmarks sensitive to PMMA. The NCSU ENDF/B-VIII.1 PMMA TSL is an improvement over VIII.0. This was Accepted at last ICSBEP meeting pending comment resolution, should be published in 2024 version of the Handbook. It was found that temperature had a large impact on reactivity of the critical configuration. This has Implications for validation work for thermal cases- need to adjust TSL data to correct temperature as it can have hundreds of pcm effects for a few °C. Future thermal experiments should try and measure reactivity at multiple temperatures to add in data testing and benchmark adjustment.

IER 480: TEX-Pu Benchmark (PU-MET-THERM-004) to Test Polyethylene and Lucite Thermal Scattering Laws [Slides]

This presentation finds that PMT-004 has four new benchmark cases highly sensitive to PE TSL (2 cases) and PMMA TSL (2 Cases). PE cases were well predicted using MCNP6.2 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. PMMA cases overpredicted by approximately 0.6-0.7% in k eff at 20°C. Accepted into 2023 version of the ICSBEP Handbook. Temperature had a large impact on reactivity of the critical configuration. Implications for validation work for thermal cases- need to adjust TSL data to correct temperature as it can have hundreds of pcm effects for a few °C. Future thermal experiments should try and measure reactivity at multiple temperatures to aid in data testing and benchmark adjustment.

Evaluating the 238 U PFNS Including Chi-Nu Experimental Data

This report documents an evaluation of 238 U prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) which is a deliverable for a FY2024 Q4 NCSP (Nuclear Criticality Safety Program) milestone. This evaluation is new; its prior input is based on extended Los Alamos and exciton models implemented in the code CoH. Experimental covariances were estimated for five experimental data sets. One of these data sets that was measured by the Chi-Nu team of LANL and LLNL. It covers the 238 U PFNS for continuous incident-neutron energies of 1–20 MeV and outgoing-neutron energies from 10 keV– 10 MeV with high precision. Contrary to Chi-Nu data, previous data sets were measured in a limited energy range. The resulting evaluated data correspond well to the experimental PFNS taken into account for the evaluation. The evaluated PFNS also produce average mean energies in agreement with associated Chi-Nu data. If one uses the new evaluated data to predict the neutron multiplication factor, k eff , of the Flattop, Flattop-Pu and BigTen ICSBEP critical assemblies (which all have thick reflectors with high percentages of 238 U), the differences of simulated values compared to those using ENDF/B-VIII.1β3 is modest (less than 25 pcm). In addition to that, the new PFNS predict on average 238 U LLNL pulsed-sphere neutron-leakage spectra slightly better than ENDF/BVIIII.0 and ENDF/B-VIII.1β3 PFNS. The differences are, however, well within the experimental uncertainties.

Investigating a Potential Hafnium Bias in SCALE [Slides]

Previous work has examined the evidence for a gadolinium bias within SCALE. This work extends the previous work to include benchmark models with hafnium experiments from the ICSBEP Handbook. VALID contains only one experiment with hafnium: MIX-COMP-THERM-008. Newly generated models provide an opportunity to assess the potential presence of a hafnium bias.

Microreactor Assembly Transportation Cask Model Description for Criticality Safety Validation Basis Assessment

Criticality safety analyses are completed on a transportation cask used for microreactor assembly shipment to provide an example of model and analysis to industry for reproducing this type of study on their microreactor fuel shipment. The fuel assembly considered is based on a gas-cooled microreactor (GC-MR), which utilizes HALEU fuel in the form of TRISO particles and utilizes various design options considered in industry designs. Various versions of this GC-MR assembly were studied, with and without YH2 moderator, providing similar conclusions. The shipment cask design is revised based on an existing design ES-3100, developed by Y-12 for the transport of highly enriched uranium (HEU), but is enlarged to hold the GC-MR fuel assembly. Criticality safety analysis for the cask/GC-MR fuel assembly package was performed using the CSAS6 sequence of SCALE6.3.2, utilizing the ENDF/B-VII.1 based continuous energy neutron library, and the analysis strictly follows the guideline from NRC reference reports. Different scenarios, e.g. normal operation, undamaged cask with water flooded, damaged cask with optimal water moderation, have been analyzed and it could be concluded the package would always have a large margin of subcriticality even packed in an infinite array. Sensitivity and similarity analyses are also performed using the TSUNAMI sequence of SCALE6.3.2, and the similarity analysis uses all the experiments from the ICSBEP Handbook with Intermediate and Mixed Enriched Uranium (IEU) and Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) systems together with additional ones that are sponsored by the DNCSH program. These similarity analyses indicate that dry cases have no similar benchmark experiments (ck values greater than 0.8), which may become problematic if more assemblies are shipped together (or a fully loaded core is shipped) and margin to criticality is reduced. However, the damaged cask models with flooded assemblies exhibited similarities to many experiments with ck values greater than 0.8.

Microreactor Core Transportation Cask Model Description for Criticality Safety Validation Basis Assessment (Rev. 1)

Criticality safety analyses are completed on transportation casks used for microreactor whole core shipment to provide examples of models and analyses to industry, regulators, and nuclear community at large to be used in verification and validation analyses of similar applications. The microreactors considered are based on a Gas-Cooled Microreactor (GCMR) and a Heat-Pipe Microreactor (HPMR), both utilize HALEU fuel in the form of TRISO particles and various other design options considered in industry microreactor designs. Variant design options of GCMR and HPMR were also investigated to provide a wider application range for each technology. Criticality safety analyses for the GCMR and HPMR packages were performed using the CSAS6 sequence of SCALE 6.3.2 with the ENDF/B-VII.1-based continuous energy neutron libraries. Different scenarios were investigated, including normal operation and water flooded conditions to represent nominal and hypothetical accident scenarios. Sensitivity and similarity analyses are also performed using the TSUNAMI sequence of SCALE 6.3.2, and the similarity analysis uses all the experiments from the ICSBEP Handbook with Intermediate and mixed Enriched Uranium (IEU) and Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) systems, together with additional experiments that are sponsored by the DNCSH program. Many experiments were found marginally similar to the GCMR and HPMR models, with similarity index (ck) values greater than 0.8 but less than 0.9. Among all the experiments analyzed, no case has a ck value greater than 0.9, indicating that additional critical experiments might be needed to further validate the criticality safety models for microreactors transport packages.
