Crystal-field states and defect levels in candidate quantum spin ice Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7

Here, we report the synthesis of powder and single-crystal samples of cerium pyrohafnate and their characterization using neutron diffraction, thermogravimetry and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We evaluate the amount of nonmagnetic Ce 4+ defects and use this result to interpret the spectrum of crystal-electric field transitions observed using inelastic neutron scattering. The analysis of these single-ion transitions indicates the dipole-octupole nature of the ground-state doublet and a significant degree of spin-lattice coupling. The single-ion properties calculated from the crystal-electric field parameters obtained spectroscopically are in good agreement with bulk magnetic susceptibility data down to about 1 K. Below this temperature, the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility indicates a correlated regime without showing any sign of magnetic long-range order or freezing down to 0.08 K. We conclude that Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7 is another candidate to investigate exotic correlated states of quantum matter, such as the octupolar quantum spin ice recently argued to exist in the isostructural compounds Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 and Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 .

Superconductivity of Ta-Hf and Ta-Zr alloys: Potential alloys for use in superconducting devices

The electronic properties relevant to superconductivity are reported for bulk Ta-Hf and Ta-Zr body centered cubic alloys, in a large part to determine whether their properties are suitable for potential use in superconducting qbits. The body centered cubic unit cell sizes increase with increasing alloying. Here, the results of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity characterization are reported. While elemental Ta is a type I superconductor, the alloys are type II strong coupling superconductors. Although decreasing the electron count per atom is expected to increase the density of electronic states at the Fermi level and thus the superconducting transition temperature (T c ) in these systems, we find that this is not sufficient to explain the significant increases in the superconducting T c 's observed.

Multicode Signaling in a Filter Bank Multicarrier Spread Spectrum System and Its Application to HF Communications

The use of filter banks for implementing multicarrier spread spectrum systems leads to a class of effective waveforms that are highly resilient to partial-band interferers. Such waveforms can be also designed to keep the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the resulting signal at a minimum level. The use of multiple spreading gain vectors (known as multicodes), on the other hand, is an effective method for increasing the data rate in spread spectrum systems, in general. This paper presents a detailed analysis of a class of filter bank multicarrier spread spectrum (FBMC-SS) waveforms and demonstrates an effective receiver implementation of them when multicodes are applied. Application of the developed multicode waveform for communications over high-frequency (HF) skywave channels is also explored, and the benefits that it provides are studied both numerically, through computer simulations, and experimentally, by examining the receivers performance over a variety of skywave links.

Stabilization of ferroelectric phase of Hf 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 on NbN and Nb [slides]

This work demonstrated both NbN and Nb make good electrodes for stabilizing orthorhombic phase of Hf 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 ferroelectric films. Wake up are < 100 cycles. P r can be as high as 30 µC/cm 2 - respectively 14 and 18 µC/cm 2 here. Further, capacitance suggests an orthorhombic phase can be stabilized. Addition of a linear dielectric under modest thickness can tune the P r and reduce leakage.

Modular HF Isolated MV String Inverters Enable a New Paradigm for Large PV Farms

The “Modular HF Isolated MV String Inverters Enable a New Paradigm for Large PV Farms” project focuses on exploring alternative power converter and system-level plant configurations to achieve the lowest cost and highest energy output for a given solar plus storage (e.g., PV + battery) plant, including the use of medium voltage (MV) collection while taking into account detailed models of all elements. To realize this objective, four approaches were utilized (i) employ a novel Medium Voltage String Inverter (MVSI) topology (soft switching solid state transformer – S4T) to convert 1000 Vdc to 4.16 kVac; (ii) plant collection using standard, low-cost overhead MV distribution network; (iii) enable energy storage integration without additional converter cost to achieve dispatchability of the PV resource; and (iv) provide advanced functionality (autonomous operation, track ISO signals for dynamic balancing and ancillary services, and PV farm operation as a virtual grid resource). Subsequently and in alignment with the previously mentioned approaches, the project was structured in five efforts (i) S4T MVSI simulation and design; (ii) system analysis and storage optimization; (iii) financial analysis; (iv) power converter prototype build and test; and (v) regulatory and commercial impact study. The outcomes provided by each effort can be summarized as follows (i) Project explored the use of MV AC distribution architecture for hybrid PV+storage utility-scale PV farms; (ii) Detailed loss and LCOE analysis for AC and DC side BESS architecture, including multiple converter topologies, as well as for proposed MVSI/MDCT systems; (iii) MVSI was built and holds promise but needs lower-cost high-voltage Si-C devices, which does not seem possible in the near term; (iv) MDCT provides a simpler modular building block – validated through HIL and farm level modeling, simulation and experimental validation; (v) 300 kVA MDCT prototype built and tested, technology is being commercialized; and (vi) Regulatory model of utility building PV plants, where PV panels are treated as DC generation (IPP), seems viable and can allow improved grid integration.

Mechanism-Resolved PFM of Ferroionic and Ferroelectric Responses in Thickness-Gradient Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 Libraries

Resolving growth mechanisms and thickness evolution of functional properties is one of the key tasks in materials discovery and optimization involving thin-film materials, traditionally requiring significant experimental budgets. Here we introduce the combination of thickness-gradient libraries and automated scanning probe microscopy as a systematic pathway to elucidate growth modes and disentangle ferroelectric and electrochemical contributions in ferroelectric thin films. As a model system, we explore the Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 (HZO) gradient thin films grown on La x Sr 1-x MnO 3 (LSMO) bottom electrode thin films. Automated piezoresponse force microscopy, spectroscopy, and lithography reveals that irreversible topographic deformation arises from electrochemical activity at the LSMO surface, whereas reversible phase inversion in HZO reflects ferroelectric switching. Automated topography height-map scans are used to further quantify nucleation density, particle-size evolution, and roughness correlations across the thickness-gradient, demonstrating that improved plume stabilization during growth suppresses interfacial reactions and promotes dense, fine-grained HZO conducive to ferroelectric phase formation. This combined materials-engineering and automated-SPM framework establishes a platform for high-throughput, mechanism-resolved characterization of ferroionic and ferroelectric responses in complex oxide films.

Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) Wastewater Treatment Using Polybenzimidazole (PBI) Hollow Fiber (HF) Membranes

Polybenzimidazole (PBI) hollow fiber membranes were used to treat flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater (WW) from a coal fired power plant. Membranes were tested using both single salt solutions and real FGD WW. The PBI membranes showed >99% rejection for single salt solutions of NaCl, MgCl2, CaSO4, and CaCl2 at approximately 2000 PPM (parts per million). The membranes also showed >97% rejection for FGD WW concentrations ranging from 6900 to 14,400 PPM total dissolved solids (TDS). The pH of the FGD WW was adjusted between 3.97–8.20, and there was an optimal pH between 5.31 and 7.80 where %rejection reached a maximum of >99%. The membranes were able to operate stably up to 50 °C, nearly doubling the water flux as compared to room temperature, and while maintaining >98% salt rejection.
