Measurement of the transverse energy density in Measurement of the transverse energy density in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV with the sPHENIX detector

Here, this paper reports measurements of the transverse energy per unit pseudorapidity (𝑑⁢𝐸 𝑇 /𝑑⁢𝜂) produced in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV, performed with the sPHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The results cover the pseudorapidity range |𝜂| < 1.1 and constitute the first such measurement performed using a hadronic calorimeter at RHIC. Measurements of 𝑑⁢𝐸 𝑇 /𝑑⁢𝜂 are presented for a range of centrality intervals and the average 𝑑⁢𝐸 𝑇 /𝑑⁢𝜂 as a function of the number of participating nucleons, 𝑁 part , is compared to a variety of Monte Carlo heavy-ion event generators. The results are in agreement with previous measurements at RHIC, and feature an improved granularity in 𝜂 and improved precision in low-𝑁 part events.

Dielectron production in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV

The first measurement of the 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pair production at midrapidity and low invariant mass in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The yield of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pairs is compared with a cocktail of expected hadronic decay contributions in the invariant mass (𝑚𝑒⁢𝑒) and pair transverse momentum (𝑝 T,𝑒⁢𝑒 ) ranges 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 3.5 GeV/𝑐 2 and 𝑝 T,𝑒⁢𝑒 < 8 GeV/𝑐. For 0.18 < 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 0.5 GeV/𝑐 2 the ratio of data to the cocktail of hadronic contributions amounts to 1.40 ± 0.11⁢(stat.) ± 0.23 ⁢(syst.) ± 0.16⁢ (cocktail) and 1.42 ± 0.11⁢ (stat.) ± 0.23 (syst.)$^{+0.24}_{−0.29}$ ⁢(cocktail), including or not including medium effects in the estimation of the heavy-flavor background, respectively. It is consistent with predictions from two different models for an additional contribution of thermal 𝑒+⁢𝑒− pairs from the hadronic and partonic phases. In the intermediate-mass range (1.2 < 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 2.6 GeV/𝑐 2 ), the pair transverse impact parameter of the 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pairs (DCA𝑒⁢𝑒, where “DCA” denotes “distance of closest approach”) is used for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions to separate displaced dielectrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays from a possible (thermal) contribution produced at the interaction point. The data are consistent with a suppression of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pairs from $𝑐\bar{𝑐}$ and an additional prompt component. Finally, the first direct-photon measurement in the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is reported via the study of virtual direct photons in the transverse momentum range 1 < 𝑝 T < 5 GeV/𝑐. A model including prompt photons, as well as photons from the preequilibrium and fluid-dynamic phases, can reproduce the result, while being at the upper edge of the data uncertainties.

Measurement of the ${\Lambda}_b^0$→ J/ψΛ angular distribution and the ${\Lambda}_b^0$ polarisation in pp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → J/ψ Λ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb – 1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1 < p T < 20 GeV/ c and 2 < η < 5, respectively. The data are consistent with \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ → pπ – decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES III collaboration.

Observation of a new baryon state in the $Λ^0_bπ^+π^-$ mass spectrum

A new baryon state is observed in the $Λ^0_bπ^+π^-$ mass spectrum with high significance using a data sample of pp collisions, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . The mass and natural width of the new state are measured to be m = 6072.3 ± 2.9 ± 0.6 ± 0.2 MeV , Γ = 72 ± 11 ± 2 MeV , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The third uncertainty for the mass is due to imprecise knowledge of the $Λ^0_b$ baryon mass. The new state is consistent with the first radial excitation of the $Λ^0_b$ baryon, the Λ b (2S) 0 resonance. Updated measurements of the masses and the upper limits on the natural widths of the previously observed Λ b (5912) 0 and Λ b (5920) 0 states are also reported.

Measurement of charged hadron multiplicity in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV with the sPHENIX detector

The pseudorapidity distribution of charged hadrons produced in Au + Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV is measured using data collected by the sPHENIX detector. Charged hadron yields are extracted by counting cluster pairs in the inner and outer layers of the Intermediate Silicon Tracker, with corrections applied for detector acceptance, reconstruction efficiency, combinatorial pairs, and contributions from secondary decays. The measured distributions cover |η| < 1.1 across various centralities, and the average pseudorapidity density of charged hadrons at mid-rapidity is compared to predictions from Monte Carlo heavy-ion event generators. This result, featuring full azimuthal coverage at mid-rapidity, is consistent with previous experimental measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, thereby supporting the broader sPHENIX physics program.

Nuclear modification of $\Upsilon$ states in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Production cross sections of Image 1, Image 2, and Image 3 states decaying into Image 4 in proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions are reported using data collected by the CMS experiment at s NN = 5.02 TeV . A comparison is made with corresponding cross sections obtained with p p data measured at the same collision energy and scaled by the Pb nucleus mass number. The nuclear modification factor for Image 1 is found to be Image 5. Similar results for the excited states indicate a sequential suppression pattern, such that Image 6. The suppression of all states is much less pronounced in p Pb than in PbPb collisions, and independent of transverse momentum Image 7 and center-of-mass rapidity Image 8 of the individual Image 9 state in the studied range Image 10 and Image 11. Models that incorporate final-state effects of bottomonia in pPb collisions are in better agreement with the data than those which only assume initial-state modifications.

Measurement of muon pairs produced via γ γ scattering in nonultraperipheral Pb + Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Results of a measurement of dimuon photoproduction in nonultraperipheral Pb + Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV are presented. The measurement uses ATLAS data from the 2015 and 2018 Pb + Pb data-taking periods at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 1.94 nb –1 . The γγ → μ + μ – pairs are identified via selections on pair momentum asymmetry and acoplanarity. Differential cross sections for dimuon production are measured in different centrality, average muon momentum, and pair rapidity intervals as functions of acoplanarity and k ⊥ , the transverse momentum kick of one muon relative to the other. Measurements are also made as a function of the rapidity separation of the muons and the angle of the muon pair relative to the second-order event plane to test whether magnetic fields generated in the quark-gluon plasma affect the measured muons. A prior observation of a centrality-dependent broadening of the acoplanarity distribution is confirmed. Furthermore, the improved precision of the measurement reveals a depletion in the number of pairs having small acoplanarity or k ⊥ values in more central collisions. The acoplanarity distributions in a given centrality interval are observed to vary with the mean p T of the muons in the pair, but the k ⊥ distributions do not. Comparisons with recent theoretical predictions are made. The predicted trends associated with effects of magnetic fields on the dimuons are not observed.

Stochastic fluctuations in relativistic fluids: Causality, stability, and the information current

We develop a general formalism for introducing stochastic fluctuations around thermodynamic equilibrium which takes into account, for the first time, recent developments in the causality and stability properties of relativistic hydrodynamic theories. The method is valid for any covariantly stable theory of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics derived from a covariant maximum entropy principle. We illustrate the formalism with some applications, showing how it could be used to consistently introduce fluctuations in a model of relativistic heat diffusion and in conformally invariant Israel-Stewart theory in a general hydrodynamic frame. Furthermore, the latter example is used to study the hydrodynamic frame dependence of the symmetric two-point function of fluctuations of the energy-momentum tensor.

Transverse momentum dependent feed-down fractions for bottomonium production

We extract transverse-momentum-dependent feed-down fractions for bottomonium production using a data-driven approach. We use data published by the ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb Collaborations for √𝑠 =7 TeV proton-proton collisions. Based on this collected data, we produce fits to the differential cross sections for the production of both 𝑆- and 𝑃-wave bottomonium states. Combining these fits with branching ratios for excited state decays from the Particle Data Group, we compute the feed-down fractions for both the ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) and ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) as a function of transverse momentum. Our results indicate a strong dependence on transverse momentum, which is consistent with prior extractions of the feed-down fractions. When evaluated at the average momentum of the states, we find that approximately 75% of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) and ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) states are produced directly. Our results for the transverse-momentum-dependent feed-down fractions are provided in tabulated form so that they can be used by other research groups.

First Measurement of Λ c Baryon Production in Au + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Herein we report on the first measurement of the charmed baryon Λ c ± production at midrapidity ( | y | < 1 ) in Au + Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The Λ c / D 0 [denoting ( Λ c + + Λ c - ) / ( D 0 + D ¯ 0 ) ] yield ratio is measured to be 1.08 ± 0.16 ( stat ) ± 0.26 ( sys ) in the 0%–20% most central Au + Au collisions for the transverse momentum ( p T ) range 3 < p T < 6 GeV / c . This is significantly larger than the pythia model calculations for p + p collisions. The measured Λ c / D 0 ratio, as a function of p T and collision centrality, is comparable to the baryon-to-meson ratios for light and strange hadrons in Au + Au collisions. Model calculations including coalescence hadronization for charmed baryon and meson formation reproduce the features of our measured Λ c / D 0 ratio.

Novel Relaxation Time Approximation to the Relativistic Boltzmann Equation

In this work, we show that the widely used relaxation time approximation to the relativistic Boltzmann equation contains basic flaws, being incompatible with micro- and macroscopic conservation laws if the relaxation time depends on energy or general matching conditions are applied. We propose a new approximation that fixes such fundamental issues and maintains the basic properties of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator. We show how this correction affects transport coefficients, such as the bulk viscosity and particle diffusion.

Transient Relativistic Fluid Dynamics in a General Hydrodynamic Frame

In this work, we propose a new theory of second-order viscous relativistic hydrodynamics which does not impose any frame conditions on the choice of the hydrodynamic variables. It differs from Mueller-Israel-Stewart theory by including additional transient degrees of freedom, and its first-order truncation reduces to Bemfica-Disconzi-Noronha-Kovtun theory. Conditions for causality and stability are explicitly given in the conformal regime. As an illustrative example, we consider Bjorken flow solutions to our equations and identify variables which make a hydrodynamic attractor manifest.

Modification of the Jet Energy-Energy Correlator in Cold Nuclear Matter

We compute medium corrections to the energy-energy correlator (EEC) for jets in electron-nucleus collisions at leading order in the QCD coupling and the interaction of the jet with the medium. We derive an analytical expression for the modification of the EEC as a function of the opening angle and show that the modification is strongest at large angles within the jet cone. We obtain explicit results for the dependence of the modification on the jet energy, the scattering power of cold nuclear matter, and the path length within the medium. We extend our calculations to gluon jets in proton-nucleus collisions and compare our results with recent preliminary data for proton-lead collisions at the LHC. Here, we also discuss the role of comovers on the EEC in p + Pb collisions.
