Refractory metal shielding /insulation/ increases operating range of induction furnace

Thermal radiation shield contains escaping heat from an induction furnace. The shield consists of a sheet of refractory metal foil and a loosely packed mat of refractory metal fibers in a concentric pattern. This shielding technique can be used for high temperature ovens, high temperature fluid lines, and chemical reaction vessels.

Antechamber facilitates loading and unloading of vacuum furnace

Antechamber facilitates the use of a furnace in which materials are heat treated in a high vacuum or a gas atmosphere. It has a high vacuum pumping system, a means for backfilling with a selected gas, an access door, glove ports, and a motor driven platform.

Silicon solar cell monitors high temperature furnace operation

Silicon solar cell, attached to each viewpoint, monitors that incandescent emission from the hot interior of a furnace without interfering with the test assembly or optical pyrometry during the test. This technique can provide continuous indication of hot spots or provide warning of excessive temperatures in cooler regions.

Cyclic furnace oxidation of clad WI-52 systems at 1040 C and 1090 C

Cyclic furnace oxidation studies were conducted on the cobalt alloy WI-52 clad with Ni-30Cr, Fe-25Cr-4A1, and Ni-20Cr-4A1 foils (0.051 to 0.254 mm thick). Tests as long as 400 hours using 1- and 20-hour cycles showed that the Ni-Cr- and Fe-Cr-A1 claddings were about equally protective at both temperatures. The protective ability of these alloys was influenced by exposure temperature and cladding thickness. At both temperatures, they protected WI-52 about as well as, or better than, a widely used commercial aluminide coating. The Ni-Cr-Al claddings did not protect WI-52 nearly as well. Interdiffusion generally influenced the oxidation behavior of all clad WI-52 systems.

Analytical design and performance studies of nuclear furnace tests of small nuclear light bulb models

Analytical studies were continued to identify the design and performance characteristics of a small-scale model of a nuclear light bulb unit cell suitable for testing in a nuclear furnace reactor. Emphasis was placed on calculating performance characteristics based on detailed radiant heat transfer analyses, on designing the test assembly for ease of insertion, connection, and withdrawal at the reactor test cell, and on determining instrumentation and test effluent handling requirements. In addition, a review of candidate test reactors for future nuclear light bulb in-reactor tests was conducted.

Induction graphitizing furnace acceptance test report

The induction furnace was designed to provide the controlled temperature and environment required for the post-cure, carbonization and graphitization processes for the fabrication of a fibrous graphite NERVA nozzle extension. The acceptance testing required six tests and a total operating time of 298 hrs. Low temperature mode operations, 120 to 850 C, were completed in one test run. High temperature mode operations, 120 to 2750 C, were completed during five tests.

Oscillator strengths of ultraviolet Fe I lines from hook-method measurements on a furnace

The hook method, which makes use of anomalous dispersion, was employed to measure 107 absolute oscillator strengths of Fe I on a high-temperature furnace. The absolute scale was established before and after each run by recording the anomalous dispersion near a strong resonance line with accurately known f-value. The results cover three lines with wavelengths from 1934 to 1941 A, and 104 lines lying between 2084 and 3194 A - mostly transitions originating from the a 5 D ground state. The average error of the f-values is plus or minus 20%, and the largest and smallest errors given are plus or minus 10 and plus or minus 60%. Disagreements exceeding an order of magnitude are found with previous values in the literature.

Energy Conversion Alternatives Study (ECAS), Westinghouse phase 1. Volume 3: Combustors, furnaces and low-BTU gasifiers

Information is presented on the design, performance, operating characteristics, cost, and development status of coal preparation equipment, combustion equipment, furnaces, low-Btu gasification processes, low-temperature carbonization processes, desulfurization processes, and pollution particulate removal equipment. The information was compiled for use by the various cycle concept leaders in determining the performance, capital costs, energy costs, and natural resource requirements of each of their system configurations.
