Performance characteristics of wind profiling radars

Doppler radars used to measure winds in the troposphere and lower stratosphere for weather analysis and forecasting are lower-sensitivity versions of mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere radars widely used for research. The term wind profiler is used to denote these radars because measurements of vertical profiles of horizontal and vertical wind are their primary function. It is clear that wind profilers will be in widespread use within five years: procurement of a network of 30 wind profilers is underway. The Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) has operated a small research network of radar wind profilers in Colorado for about two and one-half years. The transmitted power and antenna aperture for these radars is given. Data archiving procedures have been in place for about one year, and this data base is used to evaluate the performance of the radars. One of the prime concerns of potential wind profilers users is how often and how long wind measurements are lacking at a given height. Since these outages constitute an important part of the performance of the wind profilers, they are calculated at three radar frequencies, 50-, 405-, and 915-MHz, (wavelengths of 6-, 0.74-, and 0.33-m) at monthly intervals to determine both the number of outages at each frequency and annual variations in outages.

Is N-protonated hydrogen isocyanide, H2NC(+), an observable interstellar species?

Ab initio molecular orbital theory is used to examine the singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces for the CH2N(+) system. The results confirm those of earlier studies which suggested that the singlet H2NC(+) isomer could be formed via the corresponding triplet isomer. Also, it is shown that the reaction HCN(+) + H2 might lead to this metastable isomer without invoking the triplet species. The best test of the hypothesis that this molecule can be formed by gas phase, ion molecule reactions and may be an important precursor in the interstellar synthesis of HCN and HNC is to search for it in space. To this end, theoretical predictions are made of its rotational frequencies and its vibrational frequencies and intensities to serve as a guide to laboratory spectroscopists and radioastronomers.

Shock-induced volatile loss from a carbonaceous chondrite Implications for planetary accretion

Solid recovery impact-induced volatile loss experiments on the Murchison C2M meteorite indicate that for an impact of a given velocity, H2O and total volatiles are driven from the sample in the same proportion as present initially. The primitive surface volatile budget of a planet growing by accretion would have the same bulk elemental composition as the volatiles in the incident planetesimals. Incipient devolatilization of Murchison occurs at an initial shock pressure of about 11 GPa and complete devolatilization occurs at a pressure of about 30 GPa. For the earth, incipient and complete devolatilization of accreting planetesimals would occur when the planet reached approximately 12 percent and 27 percent, respectively, of its present-day radius. Impact-induced devolatilization would profoundly affect the volatile distribution within the accreting planet. Prior to metallic core formation and internal differentiation the growing planet would have a very small core with the same volatile content as the incident material, a volatile depleted mantle, and an extremely volatile rich surface. In the case of the earth, 99.4 wt pct of the total incident volatile material would end up on or near the planetary surface.

Interstellar clouds near the sun

Present knowledge concerning interstellar clouds near the sun is reviewed. The distribution and chracteristics of this interstellar dust and gas are described, and interstellar wind flowing through the solar system is discussed. Evidence is presented for a flow of more distant interstellar material past the solar system. Possible effects of an encounter between the solar system and a cloud core embedded in this low-density flow are examined. It is likely that the solar system is heading for condensations within 100 pc and that encounters may occur in the next 0.1 to 1 Myr. Such encounters could trigger global weather effects, including surface cooling and increased precipitation.

The local interstellar medium. VII - The local interstellar wind and interstellar material in front of the nearby star Alpha Ophiuchi

IUE observations of Mg I 2852.127 A are used to search for warm interstellar gas in the direction of Alpha Oph. The data on Mg I are first presented, and Mg I as a diagnostic of warm gas is discussed. A cool H I feature found in the direction of Alpha Oph, and which is evidently the origin of most of the observed optical and ultraviolet lines, is discussed, and the cloud geometry is examined.

Hard-sphere fluid in infinite dimensions

The exact Mayer series is derived for the pressure, density, and equation of state of a hard-sphere fluid in the limit of infinite space dimensions D. The Mayer series can be analytically continued into the full (cut) activity plane, and there is no sign of a phase transition. The quantum-mechanical system is also treated. For D = infinity, the fluid behaves like an ideal Bose gas and undergoes a Bose-Einstein condensation.

The integrated analysis capability (IAC Level 2.0)

The critical data management issues involved in the development of the integral analysis capability (IAC), Level 2, to support the design analysis and performance evaluation of large space structures, are examined. In particular, attention is given to the advantages and disadvantages of the formalized data base; merging of the matrix and relational data concepts; data types, query operators, and data handling; sequential versus direct-access files; local versus global data access; programming languages and host machines; and data flow techniques. The discussion also covers system architecture, recent system level enhancements, executive/user interface capabilities, and technology applications.

An order (n) algorithm for the dynamics simulation of robotic systems

The formulation of an Order (n) algorithm for DISCOS (Dynamics Interaction Simulation of Controls and Structures), which is an industry-standard software package for simulation and analysis of flexible multibody systems is presented. For systems involving many bodies, the new Order (n) version of DISCOS is much faster than the current version. Results of the experimental validation of the dynamics software are also presented. The experiment is carried out on a seven-joint robot arm at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The algorithm used in the current version of DISCOS requires the inverse of a matrix whose dimension is equal to the number of constraints in the system. Generally, the number of constraints in a system is roughly proportional to the number of bodies in the system, and matrix inversion requires O(p exp 3) operations, where p is the dimension of the matrix. The current version of DISCOS is therefore considered an Order (n exp 3) algorithm. In contrast, the Order (n) algorithm requires inversion of matrices which are small, and the number of matrices to be inverted increases only linearly with the number of bodies. The newly-developed Order (n) DISCOS is currently capable of handling chain and tree topologies as well as multiple closed loops. Continuing development will extend the capability of the software to deal with typical robotics applications such as put-and-place, multi-arm hand-off and surface sliding.

Test and validation for robot arm control dynamics simulation

The Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) program will require an ability to develop, in a cost effective manner, many simulation models for design, analysis, performance evaluation, and crew training. Computational speed and the degree of modeling fidelity associated with each simulation must be commensurate with problem objectives. To demonstrate evolving state-of-the-art general purpose multibody modeling capabilities, to validate these by laboratory testing, and to expose their modeling shortcomings, two focus problems at the opposite ends of the simulation spectrum are defined: (1) Coarse Acquisition Control Dynamics. Create a real time man-in-the-control-loop simulator. Provide animated graphical display of robot arm dynamics and tactile feedback sufficient for cueing the operator. Interface simulator software with human operated tactile feedback controller; i.e., the Kraft mini-master. (2) Fine, Precision Mode Control Dynamics. Create a high speed, high fidelity simulation model for the design, analysis, and performance evaluation of autonomous 7 degree-of-freedom (DOF) trajectory control algorithms. This model must contain detail dynamic models for all significant dynamics elements within the robot arm, such as joint drive mechanisms.

Ionization in nearby interstellar gas

Due to dielectric recombination, neutral magnesium represents an important tracer for the warm low-density gas around the solar system. New Mg I 2852 absorption-line data from IUE are presented, including detections in a few stars within 40 pc of the sun. The absence of detectable Mg I in Alpha CMa and other stars sets limits on the combined size and electron density of the interstellar cloud which gives rise to the local interstellar wind. For a cloud radius greater than 1 pc and density of 0.1/cu cm, the local cloud has a low fractional ionization, n(e)/n(tot) less than 0.05, if magnesium is undepleted, equilibrium conditions prevail, the cloud temperature is 11,750 K, and 80 percent of the magnesium in the sightline is Mg II.

Experimental validation of Order (n) DISCOS

An order (n) algorithm is developed for use in the industry-standard DISCOS (Dynamics Interaction Simulation of Controls and Structures) program for flexible multibody system dynamics simulation. This version should be more computationally efficient than conventional DISCOS for problems where a large number of bodies are involved. Program-dependent changes to DISCOS are described for reducing the number of bodies required to model gear reduction and nonlinear stiffness as internal effects. The gear reduction modification can be extended to general applications, such as gear box, rack and pinion, lever joint, and screw rotation models. Upgrading DISCOS for future use include the addition of robotics capabilities such as event-driven topology changes, surface sliding, pick-and-place, and multiarm hand-off.

Order (n) DISCOS for multibody systems with gear reduction

Recent developments in O(n) algorithms (where n is the number of bodies in the system) and parallel processing have drastically reduced the computer time needed to simulate systems involving many bodies. This paper presents a gear-reduction model for the O(n) version of DISCOS, a standard software package for simulation and analysis of flexible multibody systems. The gear-reduction model allows the accurate modeling of harmonic drives, which are commonly used in robot joints. The formulation has been implemented and validated with known results. The gear model can also be used for gear-train, rack-and-pinion, and screw joints.

Control system software, simulation, and robotic applications

All essential existing capabilities needed to create a man-machine interaction dynamics and performance (MMIDAP) capability are reviewed. The multibody system dynamics software program Order N DISCOS will be used for machine and musculo-skeletal dynamics modeling. The program JACK will be used for estimating and animating whole body human response to given loading situations and motion constraints. The basic elements of performance (BEP) task decomposition methodologies associated with the Human Performance Institute database will be used for performance assessment. Studies of the local interstellar medium. VIII - Morphology and kinematics of the diffuse interstellar clouds toward Orion

Interstellar clouds in the direction of the Orion association show only positive velocities for target stars within 190 pc of the sun, and both positive and negative velocities for more distant target stars, confirming an earlier prediction by Cowie, Songaila, and York (1979). The nearby positive velocity cloud, designated here as Orion-Lepus 70 (OL 70), is a standard diffuse interstellar cloud: it is subject to the ambient galactic radiation field, with properties consistent with T about equal to 100 K and n about equal to 3/cu cm. Combined with a column density log N(H) = 19.8-20.0/sq cm, these values imply a cloud thickness of about 7 pc. The kinematics of OL 70 are consistent with either an origin as part of the expanding Loop I superbubble shell, or as part of Lindbald's expanding ring, or a synthesis of the two models. The negative velocity interstellar components seen in stars at d not less than 200 pc are caused by interstellar matter accelerated by the expanding Ori-Eri superbubble. Relatively dense interstellar gas at positive LSR velocities is also found within the Orion association, so that it is difficult to pick out OL 70 components in the spectra of the distant stars.
