Frieze charge-stripes in a correlated kagome superconductor

In kagome metals, geometric frustration, electronic correlations and band topology combine to produce a wide range of intriguing phenomena. Among them, CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$ offers an opportunity to investigate unconventional superconductivity in a strongly correlated kagome system, with indications of frustrated magnetism and quantum criticality. Here, we demonstrate a cascade of density-wave transitions with distinct symmetries in bulk single crystals of CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$. Using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we uncover a unidirectional density wave that breaks all mirror symmetries -- resembling a chiral density wave -- but that also retains a mirror glide symmetry. We refer to this as a frieze charge stripe order phase, as its symmetry properties correspond to one of the fundamental frieze symmetry groups. A combination of high-resolution imaging, Fourier analysis and theoretical simulations reveal the key role of sublattice degrees of freedom in stabilizing this phase, characterized by internal chiral textures of opposite handedness. These findings suggest that superconductivity in CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$ emerges from this distinct density wave state and provide fresh insight into realizing electronic phases governed by frieze symmetry groups in quantum materials.

Ultrafast solvent-to-solute proton transfer mediated by intermolecular coherent vibrations

Ultrafast photoinduced excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) plays a crucial role in protecting biomolecules and functional materials from photodamage. However, the influence of solute-solvent interactions on ESPT dynamics remains under active investigation. Here, we present an ultrafast spectroscopic study of ESPT in the photobase 2-(2´-pyridyl)benzimidazole (PBI) in methanol. Ultrafast absorption spectroscopy, supported by quantum chemical calculations, reveals three distinct kinetic steps: (1) a 2.2 ps solvent-to-solute proton transfer, (2) subsequent nonradiative relaxation to the ground state within 31 ps, producing a vibrationally hot ensemble with substantial excess kinetic energy, and (3) equilibration as this energy dissipates into the surrounding solvent bath over 186 ps. Femtosecond-resolved dynamics exhibit oscillatory signals indicative of coherent wavepacket motion on the S 1 potential energy surface. A phase flip in the excited-state absorption maximum confirms this assignment. Fourier analysis resolves two dominant periods (∼117 fs and ∼340 fs), corresponding to in-plane and out-of-plane vibrational modes coupled between PBI and the hydrogen-bonded methanol molecule. The rapid dephasing ( < 300 fs) suggests that the nuclear wavefunction evolves on an anharmonic potential energy surface while traversing the ESPT reaction coordinate.

Monolithic optoelectronic circuit design for on-chip terahertz applications

We demonstrate a monolithic coplanar stripline platform for on-chip terahertz (THz) generation, transmission, and detection, addressing key challenges of mode purity, bandwidth, and referencing. Capacitive coupling of the photoconductive generator switch enforces pure odd-mode propagation, increases THz field strength, and extends the operational frequency range, achieving 0.05–1.4 THz. Our architecture enables fully monolithic fabrication with amorphous silicon switches, in situ field referencing, and galvanic isolation between generation and detection. Finite-element simulations and experiments confirm that suppressing parasitic modes improves signal integrity, providing a robust platform for high-fidelity THz spectroscopy, ultrafast electronics, and nanoscale quantum materials research.

Coherent diffraction imaging in the undergraduate laboratory

We present an undergraduate optics instructional laboratory designed to teach skills relevant to a broad range of modern scientific and technical careers. In this laboratory project, students image a custom aperture using coherent diffraction imaging, while learning principles and skills related to digital image processing and computational imaging, including multidimensional Fourier analysis, iterative phase retrieval, noise reduction, finite dynamic range, and sampling considerations. After briefly reviewing these imaging principles, we describe the required experimental materials and setup for this project. Our experimental apparatus is both inexpensive and portable, and a software application we developed for interactive data analysis is freely available.

Tuning Shinkarev’s Bicycle: Separating the Parallel Cycles of Photosystem II Using Empirical Wavelet Transform

The oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of Photosystem II (PSII) catalyzes light-driven water oxidation, a process necessary to sustain Earth’s atmospheric oxygen. Oxygen yields measured during single-turnover flash sequences exhibit period-four oscillations, which form the basis of the Joliot–Kok (S-state) model. However, when the oscillations of other processes contribute to the measured oxygen yield, fitting methods can conflate these signals and distort estimates of inefficiencies and initial S-state populations. To address this, we applied the empirical wavelet transform (EWT) as a model-independent method to separate overlapping oscillators and capture damping dynamics that are not well represented in Fourier analysis. We tested this framework on polarographic flash-oxygen traces from both our Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 thylakoid membrane preparations and archival datasets on Chlorella and isolated chloroplasts. EWT consistently resolves the expected period-four component alongside a distinct binary oscillation. Simulations suggest that fitting this isolated period-four signal recovers VZAD parameters more accurately than analysis of raw traces, yielding different estimates for S-state distributions and transition probabilities. Notably, this binary oscillation aligns closely with semiquinone dynamics predicted solely from period-four fit parameters. These findings indicate that EWT can effectively distinguish complex signals in oxygen evolution, offering a framework potentially applicable to other spectroscopic probes of the S-state cycle.

Apollo 9 multiband photography experiment S065

Fourier analysis was applied to microdensitometer scans of a selected region of one SO65 frame in each of the three black-and-white bands. The approach was unique because a somewhat arbitrary section of the image was used and not limited to available targets as in edge analysis. Comparison of duplicates and calculation of absolute SO65 MTF were done by applying linear systems theory to the spatial spectra of the image scans. It was found that the duplication process was nonlinear and resulted in general amplification of spatial frequency modulation. However, the increase in modulation was offset by a corresponding increase in the granularity of the copies. The amount of increase seemed to be related to the initial granularity, but a direct relationship was not verified. Band-to-band comparison of image quality was achieved in the form of signal-to-noise ratio curves as a function of spatial frequency for each band. From this standpoint the DD band was an order of magnitude better than the other two. These were several factors that restricted the analysis of the Apollo 9 imagery. Among these were the lack of precise sensitometric and optical system data on the high altitude photography. In addition it was determined that there was only one simultaneous pair of high altitude and SO65 frames. Finally, the original SO65 photography was not available for scanning (for obvious reasons), thus eliminating a reference base for granularity and SO65 MTF determination.

Planimetric shapes of lunar rilles, part Q

Selected Apollo 16 photographs of lunar rilles have been analyzed with a new technique that includes a finite Fourier analysis. Preliminary results suggest that it will be possible to classify rilles quantitatively by their planimetric shape. Shapes of possible terrestrial analogs for lunar rilles also can be compared to the shapes of lunar rilles by using this new technique. Preliminary results also suggest that the new technique may be useful for demonstrating structural control of shape of lunar rilles.

Martian centre of mass - Centre of figure offset.

A Fourier analysis of Martian radar topographic data is carried out to determine the magnitude and direction of the center-of-mass/center-of-figure offset of Mars. A value of about 1 km is obtained for the figure offset with respect to the center of mass in the general direction of Tharsis. It is noted that figure offsets of comparable magnitudes exist in the earth and the moon.

Evaluation of ERTS-1 image sensor spatial resolution in photographic form

The author has identified the following significant results. The digital Optical Transfer Function (OTF) measurements showed the following: (1) there are no significant differences in optical performance, in terms of OTF, among all four bands of the multispectral scanner, (2) no substantial changes in the OTF's of bands 4, 5, and 6 during the period November 1972 to May 1973, and (3) comparison between the photographic and digital (CCT) two-dimensional OTF's indicated a strong asymmetry in the photographic product OTF between the MSS scan direction and across scan direction. The coherent light Fourier analysis program showed the following: (1) for agricultural areas, bands 5 and 7 of the MSS are superior in terms of image definition, and therefore mapping and acreage estimation, (2) amplitude modulation in imagery from MSS bands 4 and 5 is between 65 to 90 percent of that in corresponding bands of Apollo 9 imagery (SO65), and (3) MSS band 5 imagery has a ground resolution between 55 to 75 percent of that exhibited in the corresponding band of Apollo 9 imagery (SO65).

Software techniques for image processing

The present paper describes several software techniques that can be used to get the 'most' out of an image without destroying or adding any information. A simple overview is given of a general image-processing system, a number of systems in current use are listed, and three types of processing tasks are delineated: image diagnostics, subjective enhancement, and quantitative restoration. Examples of each of these types are discussed in some detail, including histogram, differences, and Fourier analysis for image diagnostics; contrast stretching, edge enhancement, and pseudocolor displays for subjective enhancement; and photometric correction, contouring, and geometric correction for quantitative restoration.

Applications of charge-coupled device transversal filters to communication

The paper discusses the computational power of state-of-the-art charged-coupled device (CCD) transversal filters in communications applications. Some of the performance limitations of CCD transversal filters are discussed, with attention given to time delay and bandwidth, imperfect charge transfer efficiency, weighting coefficient error, noise, and linearity. The application of CCD transversal filters to matched filtering, spectral filtering, and Fourier analysis is examined. Techniques for making programmable transversal filters are briefly outlined.
