Coupling Between Microstrip Lines Embedded in Polyimide Layers for 3D-MMICs on Si

Three-dimensional circuits built upon multiple layers of polyimide are required for constructing Si/SiGe monolithic microwave/millimeter-wave integrated circuits on CMOS (low resistivity) Si wafers. However, the closely spaced transmission lines are susceptible to high levels of coupling, which degrades circuit performance. In this paper, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) analysis and measured characteristics of novel shielding structures that significantly reduce coupling between embedded microstrip lines are presented.

Coupling Between Microstrip Lines with Finite Width Ground Plane Embedded in Polyimide Layers for 3D-MMICs on Si

Three-dimensional circuits built upon multiple layers of polyimide are required for constructing Si/SiGe monolithic microwave/millimeter-wave integrated circuits on complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) (low resistivity) Si wafers. Thin film microstrip lines (TFMS) with finite width ground planes embedded in the polyimide are often used. However, the closely spaced TFMS lines are susceptible to high levels of coupling, which degrades circuit performance. In this paper, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) analysis and experimental measurements are used to show that the ground planes must be connected by via holes to reduce coupling in both the forward and backward directions.

Diffraction Efficiency of Thin Film Holographic Beam Steering Devices

Dynamic holography has been demonstrated as a method for correcting aberrations in space deployable optics, and can also be used to achieve high-resolution beam steering in the same environment. In this paper, we consider some of the factors affecting the efficiency of these devices. Specifically, the effect on the efficiency of a highly collimated beam from the number of discrete phase steps per period is considered for a blazed thin film beam steering grating. The effect of the number of discrete phase steps per period on steering resolution is also considered. We also present some result of Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) calculations of light propagating through liquid crystal "blazed" gratings. Liquid crystal gratings are shown to spatially modulate both the phase and amplitude of the propagating light.

On the Determination of Local Sites for Shallow Ground Water Prospection Using Low Frequency Sounding Radars on Mars

Low frequency sounding radars should be able to probe the Martian subsurface layers down to varying depths, depending on the geo-electrical properties of the sounded sites. We present in this work four frequency dependent geo-electrical models of the Martian subsurface in the 1-20 MHz frequency band, based on laboratory electromagnetic characterization of Martian soil analogues. Those models correspond to local Martian sites, where we considered particular interest for the search of water using mainly the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) instrument of the Netlander mission. Results and discussion are also valid for both sounding experiments MARSIS and SHARAD. The four models of the Martian subsurface are designed to represent terrains where recent fluvial like features suggest the presence of near subsurface ground ice and probably liquid water. We performed measurements on volcanic and sedimentary materials that may be present on these sites under the appropriate geophysical conditions that may exist in those terrains. We then simulated the backscattered radar echo arising from each site in the 2 MHz frequency band, using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) algorithm, in order to evaluate the instrument performances to probe the subsurface stratigraphy of each site. Our results confirm that the near subsurface rich iron oxide mineralogy controls the instrument performances in terms of penetration depth and signal to noise ratio in the 2 MHz frequency band. We also discuss the geophysical and geo-electrical sounding conditions that could lead to an ambiguous detection of shallow subsurface water on Mars for the Netlander GPR. Finally we hope to present by the conference time a terrestrial test analogue site selected according to those creteria where deep sub-surface water have been detected 600 m deep using a prototype of the 2 MHz Netlander GPR in a field survey performed last febrary in the eastern part of the Egyptian desert.

Coupling between Microstrip Lines Embedded in Polyimide Layers for 3D-MMICs on Si

Three-dimensional circuits built upon multiple layers of polyimide are required for constructing SilSiGe monolithic microwavdmillimeter-wave integrated circuits on CMOS (low resistivity) Si wafers. A discussion of the electric and magnetic field distributions for the coupled microstrip lines is presented to provide a physical rationale for the presented results.

Coupling Between Microstrip Lines With Finite Width Ground Plane Embedded in Thin Film Circuits

Three-dimensional (3D) interconnects built upon multiple layers of polyimide are required for constructing 3D circuits on CMOS (low resistivity) Si wafers, GaAs, and ceramic substrates. Thin film microstrip lines (TFMS) with finite width ground planes embedded in the polyimide are often used. However, the closely spaced TFMS lines a r e susceptible to high levels of coupling, which degrades circuit performance. In this paper, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) analysis and experimental measurements a r e used to show that the ground planes must be connected by via holes to reduce coupling in both the forward and backward directions. Furthermore, it is shown that coupled microstrip lines establish a slotline type mode between the two ground planes and a dielectric waveguide type mode, and that the via holes recommended here eliminate these two modes.

On the Fringe Field of Wide Angle LC Optical Phased Array

For free space laser communication, light weighted large deployable optics is a critical component for the transmitter. However, such an optical element will introduce large aberrations due to the fact that the surface figure of the large optics is susceptable to deformation in the space environment. We propose to use a high-resolution liquid crystal spatial light modulator to correct for wavefront aberrations introduced by the primary optical element, and to achieve very fine beam steering and shaping at the same time. A 2-D optical phased array (OPA) antenna based on a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) spatial light modulator is described. This device offers a combination of low cost, high resolution, high accuracy, high diffraction efficiency at video speed. To quantitatively understand the influence factor of the different design parameters, a computer simulation of the device is given by the 2-D director simulation and the Finite Difference Time domain (FDTD) simulation. For the 1-D OPA, we define the maximum steering angle to have a grating period of 8 pixel/reset scheme; as for larger steering angles than this criterion, the diffraction efficiency drops dramatically. In this case, the diffraction efficiency of 0.86 and the Strehl ratio of 0.9 are obtained in the simulation. The performance of the device in achieving high resolution wavefront correction and beam steering is also characterized experimentally.

Limitation of Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modular for Holographic Three-dimensional Displays

In a 3-D display system based on an opto-electronic reconstruction of a digitally recorded hologram, the field of view of such a system is limited by the spatial resolution of the liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) spatial light modular (SLM) used to perform the opto-electronic reconstruction. In this article, the special resolution limitation of LCOS SLM associated with the fringe field effect and interpixel coupling is determined by the liquid crystal detector simulation and the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation. The diffraction efficiency loss associated with the imperfection in the phase profile is studied with an example of opto-electronic reconstruction of an amplitude object. A high spatial resolution LCOS SLM with a wide reconstruction angle is proposed.

Characterization of Meta-Materials Using Computational Electromagnetic Methods

An efficient and powerful computational method is presented to synthesize a meta-material to specified electromagnetic properties. Using the periodicity of meta-materials, the Finite Element Methodology (FEM) is developed to estimate the reflection and transmission through the meta-material structure for a normal plane wave incidence. For efficient computations of the reflection and transmission over a wide band frequency range through a meta-material a Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) approach is also developed. Using the Nicholson-Ross method and the Genetic Algorithms, a robust procedure to extract electromagnetic properties of meta-material from the knowledge of its reflection and transmission coefficients is described. Few numerical examples are also presented to validate the present approach.

Design of Si micro-cone light concentrators for heterogeneous integration with MWIR FPAs

Using 3-D finite difference time domain (FDTD) modeling, it is shown that micro-cone arrays obtained by anisotropic wet etching of Si have high potential for concentrating light on compact photodetector mesas of mid-wave infrared (MWIR) focal plane arrays (FPAs). The proposed structures can be heterogeneously integrated with FPAs possessing high quantum efficiency. They can be used to reduce the thermal noise and, potentially, increase the operating temperature of FPAs while maintaining high sensitivity of the photodetectors.

Broadband Characterization of Anti-reflection Coated Starshade Optical Edges for Solar Glint Control

A starshade is a large flower-shaped screen designed to enable the direct imaging of exoplanets with a space telescope. The starshade perimeter is composed of sharp, precisely shaped edges to minimize the glint of sunlight into the telescope. Past work has focused on bare edges to minimize the terminal radius. This paper describes the broadband, wide-angle performance of edges coated with a thin multi-layer anti-reflection coating. This coating uses a combination of interference and absorption to reduce the surface reflectivity and to avoid the negative effects associated with a large cross-sectional area. A custom scattered light testbed has been developed to quantify the amount of light scattered from sample edges and to validate Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) models of the optical scatter. We show that optical edge samples with this coating significantly reduce the solar glint pattern compared to similar uncoated optical edges.

Quantitative Study of Plasmonic Gold Nanostar Geometry Toward Optimal SERS Detection

Abstract Complex shapes of gold nanostars (GNS) have been the major obstacle to the comprehensive understanding of the rich plasmonic phenomena of GNS. We conducted extensive, systematic numerical study of far-field and near-field spectral responses of GNS for varying geometrical parameters (e.g., number of spikes, spike tip angle, and spike-to-core ratio) to elucidate the relationship between the optical property and the geometry of GNS. We found that symmetric configurations of GNS spikes generated both dipole and quadrupole localized surface plasmon (LSP) modes, their hybridization resulted in the final near-field intensity at the spike tips, and there existed a specific GNS geometry that optimized the hybridization and thus the E-field intensity for any given wavelength. From these results, we further identified the shapes of GNS that generated the strongest Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) enhancement factors in the visible and NIR spectral range. Hence, our results provide guiding principles in determining the optimal geometry of GNS for SERS applications with any choice of excitation wavelength.

Dual-step photocarrier injection by mixture layer of ZnO QDs and MoS 2 NPs on hybrid PdAu NPs

Hybrid UV-photodetector (PD) design consisted of various compatible nano-material systems are drawing significant research interests due to their improved device tunability and functionality. A hybrid ZnO–MoS 2 /HNP UV-PD design is demonstrated by the mixture layer of zinc oxide (ZnO) quantum dot (QD) and molybdenum di-sulfate (MoS 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) on the plasmonic hybrid PdAu NP template. The proposed design exhibits an excellent photocurrent of 1.45×10 -3 A under the 54.9 mW/mm2 at ± 10 V due to a dual step enhancement of photo-carrier injection. It then leads to the significantly improved performance factors of photo-responsivity 1430 mA/mm 2 and detectivity 4.50 × 10 10 jones at 0.34 mW/mm 2 . The rise time (T r ) and fall time (T f ) of 3.37 and 0.35 s are obtained for the ZnO–MoS 2 /HNP PD. Finally, the demonstrated performance factors indicate that the hybrid ZnO–MoS 2 /HNP UV-PD platform is one of the best UV-PDs as summarized in Table 1.

Enhanced Planar Antenna Efficiency Through Magnetic Thin-Films

This work proposes to use magnetic material as the substrate of planar antennas to overcome the platform effect caused by the conducting ground plane. The upper bound of the radiation efficiency of an electric-current-driven low-profile antenna is theoretically derived, which is inversely proportional to the Gilbert damping factor of the magnetic material. Meanwhile, the improvement of radiation due to the use of magnetic material is demonstrated by a three-dimensional (3D) multiphysics and multiscale time-domain model. The simulation results match the theoretical derivation, showing 25% radiation efficiency from a planar antenna backed by a FeGaB thin film with 2.56 m thickness. Furthermore, for conductive ferromagnetic materials, it is shown that the eddy current loss can be well suppressed by laminating the thin film into multiple layers. Here, the radiation efficiency of the modeled antenna with a conductive ferromagnetic substrate is improved from 2.2% to 11.8% by dividing the substrate into 10 layers, with a ferromagnetic material fill factor of 93%.

Rank-Limiting Strategies for Optimizing Tensor-Train Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulations

We introduce rank-limiting strategies to optimize tensor-train decompositions for three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations using the relationship between the tensors and their specific dimensionality. These include the use of hard caps on the inner ranks of the tensor train decomposition and the use of a group rounding algorithm taking into account all field components simultaneously. Here, several numerical examples are considered to verify the efficacy of the proposed optimization strategies.
