A STATISTICAL OPTIMIZING NAVIGATION PROCEDURE FOR SPACE FLIGHT

In a typical self-contained space navigation system, celestial observation data are gathered and processed to produce estimated velocity corrections. The results of this paper provide a basis for determining the best celestial measurements and the proper time s to implement velocity corrections. Fundamental to the navigation system is a procedure for processing celestial measurement data which permits incorporation of each individual measurement as it is made in order to provide an improved estimate of position and velocity. In order to "optimize" the navigation, a statistical evaluation of a number of alternative courses of action is made. The various alternatives, which form the basis of a decision process, concern the following: 1) which star and planet combination provides the "best" available observation; 2) whether the best observation gives a sufficient reduction in the predicted target error to warrant making the measurement; and 3) whether the uncertainty in the indicated velocity correction is a small enough percentage of the correction itself to justify an engine re-start and propellant expenditure. Numerical results are presented which illustrate the effectiveness of this approach to the space navigation problem.

ELECTRIC PROPULSION- A NEW TECHNOLOGY

Within the past 3 years, electric thrust devices have passed from the first exploratory feasibility experiments to the flight-engineered hardware phase. This rapid surge of development has been punctuated by equally rapid improvements in the performance figures of electrical thrust devices. The most spectacular advances were made in ion engine technology. Total energy expenditure per ion pair has gone from 35,000 ev in 1958 to about 600 ev at the present time leading to power utilization efficiencies of up to 80 per cent, depending upon the specific impulse. The percentage of the particles intercepting the accelerating and focusing electrodes has been reduced from more than 50 per cent in 1958 to less than 0.01 per cent at the present time. Great improvements in ion current per unit area have also been realized, leading to greater thrust "pressures."

Mixer conditions temperature of liquified gas streams

Room temperature gaseous hydrogen mixed with liquified hydrogen in a venturi produces a two- phased liquid hydrogen stream at a stable temperature. This technique is useful in laboratory testing where presently, temperature control is maintained by a calibrated heat leak that results in considerable expenditure of cryogenic refrigerants.

Telemetry receiver

Communications system maintains phase lock of weak telemetry signals with a minimal expenditure of power and bandwidth. An estimate of the frequency variation as a function of time is used to achieve coherent phase demodulation.

Analytical solutions of a class of optimum orbit modifications.

A space vehicle in an orbit around a spherical planet is considered. It is proposed to bring the vehicle, by a series of orbital maneuvers, into a final orbit. It is sought to minimize the total characteristic velocity for the maneuver. Since for a high-thrust propulsion system the characteristic velocity provides a direct measure of the fuel consumption, the optimal trajectory considered yields the minimum fuel expenditure. It is assumed that the planet is surrounded by a spherical atmosphere.

Eclipse design limits for circular orbits.

By means of simple geometric construction compact expressions for the maximum and minimum eclipse durations of a circular orbit, whose semimajor axis and inclination are specified, can be obtained. The method outlined in this note provides the designer with the necessary envelope of eclipse durations that a spacecraft will experience throughout its lifetime, and, therefore, provides a quick method of estimating necessary thermal constraints. Moreover, the closed form method presented eliminates the need for extensive machine time expenditure previously required for this type of analysis. Some numerical data to aid in the design of the spacecraft is provided.

ASRDI Oxygen Technology Survey. Volume 2: Cleaning Requirements, Procedures, and Verification Techniques

The oxygen system cleaning specifications drawn from 23 industrial and government sources are presented along with cleaning processes employed for meeting these specifications, and recommended postcleaning inspection procedures for establishing the cleanliness achieved. Areas of agreement and difference in the specifications, procedures, and inspection are examined. Also, the lack of clarity or specificity will be discussed. This absence of clarity represents potential safety hazards due to misinterpretation. It can result in exorbitant expenditures of time and money in satisfying unnecessary requirements.
