A Generic Advanced Computing Framework for Executing Windows-based Dynamic Contingency Analysis Tool in Parallel on Cluster Machines

Dynamic contingency analysis tool (DCAT) has been developed to assess the impact and likelihood of extreme contingencies and potential cascading events across their systems and interconnections. By including more customized protection models and corrective actions into the Windows-based commercial tools, DCAT can help operators understand the cascading behavior and find mitigation approaches to reduce the risk of cascading outages in a more realistic manner. In order to further enhance the capability of DCAT, this paper presents a design of an advanced computing framework that enables DCAT to run on a cluster machine to improve its computational performance. This framework is generic and can be applied to other Windows-based simulation tools to fill the technical gap of applying advanced computing technology to vendors' Windows-based tools. The preliminary tests using medium to large power systems have shown the effectiveness of this framework and its potential for accelerating the adoption of advanced computing in utilities.

Scalable Heterogeneous Execution of a Coupled-Cluster Model with Perturbative Triples

The CCSD(T) coupled-cluster model with perturbative triples is considered a gold standard for computational modeling of the correlated behavior of electrons in molecular systems. A fundamental constraint is the relatively small global-memory capacity in GPUs compared to the main-memory capacity on host nodes, necessitating relatively smaller tile sizes for high-dimensional tensor contractions in NWChem's GPU-accelerated implementation of the CCSD(T) method. A coordinated redesign is described to address this limitation and associated data movement overheads, including a novel fused GPU kernel for a set of tensor contractions, along with inter-node communication optimization and data caching. The new implementation of GPU-accelerated CCSD(T) improves overall performance by 3.4x. Finally, we discuss the trade-offs in using this fused algorithm on current and future supercomputing platforms.

Biomass to Biochar: Maximizing the Carbon Value - Executive Summary

Converting biomass to biochar presents exciting opportunities to mitigate climate change, improve forest and soil health, decrease wildfire risk, bolster ecosystem services, and revitalize rural economies. Our expert panel examined how biomass is harvested, converted to biochar and applied and where operational changes and funding could significantly magnify biochar's contributions. To advance knowledge and efficacies, we found that a rigorous combination of coordinated long-term research, market research and development and enhancement of business support infrastructure that leads to collaborative policy development is essential. We also identified how barriers to five specific biochar technology sectors could be overcome and provide guidelines for effective funding.

RADIANCE Executive Summary

Microgrids are gaining attention from organizations and cities because of their potential reliability and resilience benefits, especially in remote geographic areas: Microgrids can provide local power during emergencies, and they can reduce the costs of imported fuel by reducing overall fuel use. But the complexities and novelties of microgrid technologies are often barriers to deployment that require testing and validation to overcome. This report describes the testing, validation, and deployment of microgrid technologies in Cordova, Alaska, completed through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Grid Modernization Laboratory Consortium (GMLC) project Resilient Alaskan Distribution system Improvements using Automation, Network analysis, Control, and Energy storage (RADIANCE).

The National Transmission Planning Study: Executive Summary

The National Transmission Planning Study (NTP Study) was led by the U.S. Department of Energy's Grid Deployment Office, in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The study sought to develop new national grid-scale planning tools and methods that can be used by industry, especially when planning for interregional transmission capacity needs; identify potential transmission solutions that will provide broad-scale benefits to electric customers under a wide range of potential futures; inform planning processes for regional and interregional transmission; and identify interregional and national strategies to maintain grid reliability as the grid transitions, including to a reliance on low- and zero-carbon energy resources. The NTP Study is presented as a collection of six chapters.
