The picasso map-making code: application to a simulation of the QUIJOTE northern sky survey

ABSTRACT Map-making is an important step for the data analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. It consists of converting the data, which are typically a long, complex, and noisy collection of measurements, into a map, which is an image of the observed sky. We present in this paper a new map-making code named picasso (Polarization and Intensity CArtographer for Scanned Sky Observations), which was implemented to construct intensity and polarization maps from the Multi Frequency Instrument (MFI) of the QUIJOTE (Q-U-I Joint TEnerife) CMB polarization experiment. picasso is based on the destriping algorithm, and is suited to address specific issues of ground-based microwave observations, with a technique that allows the fit of a template function in the time domain, during the map-making step. This paper describes the picasso code, validating it with simulations and assessing its performance. For this purpose, we produced realistic simulations of the QUIJOTE-MFI survey of the northern sky (approximately ∼20 000 deg2), and analysed the reconstructed maps with picasso, using real and harmonic space statistics. We show that, for this sky area, picasso is able to reconstruct, with high fidelity, the injected signal, recovering all the scales with ℓ > 10 in TT, EE, and BB. The signal error is better than 0.001 per cent at 20 < ℓ < 200. Finally, we validated some of the methods that will be applied to the real wide-survey data, like the detection of the CMB anisotropies via cross-correlation analyses. Despite that the implementation of picasso is specific for QUIJOTE-MFI data, it could be adapted to other experiments.

Active Cancellation of Servo-Induced Noise on Stabilized Lasers via Feedforward

Many precision laser applications require active frequency stabilization. However, such stabilization loops operate by pushing noise to frequencies outside their bandwidth, leading to large “servo bumps” that can have deleterious effects for certain applications. The prevailing approach to filtering this noise is to pass the laser through a high-finesse optical cavity, which places constraints on the system design. Here, we propose and demonstrate a different approach where a frequency error signal is derived from a beat note between the laser and the light that passes through the reference cavity. The phase noise derived from this beat note is fed forward to an electro-optic modulator after the laser, carefully accounting for relative delay, for real-time frequency correction. With a hertz-line-width laser, we show ≳20 dB noise suppression at the peak of the servo bump (approximately 250 kHz) and a noise-suppression bandwidth of approximately 5 MHz—well beyond the servo bump. By simulating the Rabi dynamics of a two-level atom with our measured data, we demonstrate substantial improvements to the pulse fidelity over a wide range of Rabi frequencies. Here, our approach offers a simple and versatile method for obtaining a clean spectrum of a narrow-line-width laser, as required in many emerging applications of cold atoms, and is readily compatible with commercial systems that may even include wavelength conversion.

Study of a Proposed Infrared Horizon Scanner for Use in Space-Orientation Control Systems

An attitude-sensing device for space vehicles which detects the thermal radiation discontinuity at opposite horizons of a planetary body to produce an attitude error signal is described. The planetary body may be the Earth, its Moon, Mars, or Venus. The sensor is expected to have an accuracy of 0.25 degrees for the Earth, a long continuous operating lifetime, a wide altitude range, a wide capture capability, and an inherent ability to produce signals indicating vehicle altitude. An experimental model incorporating many of the features of the proposed sensor indicates that the proposed sensor will be low in weight, volume, and power consumption. The sensor's altitude range, accuracy, lifetime, and sensitivity to radiation from the Moon and planets are discussed.

Blackbody cavity radiometer has rapid response

Fast response, spectrally linear standard detector in the form of a blackbody cavity radiometer calibrates rapidly responding photodetectors against a calibrated standard detector. A power amplifier with maximum available gain reduces error signal without stability loss. It may be used as a blackbody radiator by manipulation of the bridge variable arm.

Dynamic linearity measurement technique

Measurement technique involves frequency modulated discriminator which produces an error signal as two signals, one of known and one of unknown frequency. The signals are electronically switched to a discriminator input, allowing independent measuring of dynamic linearity in a frequency modulated subcarrier oscillator.

A technique to eliminate false lock in PCM demodulation

One loop provides error signal which adjusts voltage controlled oscillator. Second loop multiplies input signal with generated in-phase signal. Both signals are integrated over bit period. First loop detects null which indicates lockup, and second loop emphasizes impact signal information.
