Precise Measurement of the e + e − → D s + D s − Cross Section at Center-of-Mass Energies from Threshold to 4.95 GeV

Using the e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, at center-of-mass energies from the threshold to 4.95 GeV, we present precise measurements of the cross section for the process e + e − → D s + D s − using a single-tag method. The resulting cross section line shape exhibits several new structures, thereby offering an input for a future coupled-channel analysis and model tests, which are critical to understand vector charmonium-like states with masses between 4 and 5 GeV. Observation of e + e - → ηψ(2S) at center-of-mass energies from 4.236 to 4.600 GeV

Using a total of 5 25 fb -1 of e + e - collision data with center-of-mass energies from 4.236 to 4.600 GeV, we report the first observation of the processe + e - → ηψ(2S) with a statistical significance of 4.9 standard deviations. The data sets were collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. We measure the yield of events integrated over center-of-mass energies and also present the energy dependence of the measured cross section.

Determination of the titanium spectral function from ($e,e'p$) data

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has measured the (e, e'p) cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural titanium target. In this paper, we report the analysis of the dataset obtained in different kinematics for our solid natural titanium target. Data were obtained in a range of missing momentum and missing energy between 15 ≲ p m ≲ 250 MeV / c and 12 ≲ E m ≲ 80 MeV, respectively, and using an electron beam energy of 2.2 GeV. We measured the reduced cross section with ~7% accuracy as a function of both missing momentum and missing energy. Furthermore, our Monte Carlo simulation, including both a model spectral function and the effects of final-state interactions, satisfactorily reproduces the data.

Search for a dark leptophilic scalar produced in association with τ + τ − pair in e + e − annihilation at center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV

A dark leptophilic scalar ( ϕ L ) is a hypothetical particle that couples only to leptons rather than quarks. We report on a search for ϕ L in the e + e − → τ + τ − ϕ L , ϕ L → ℓ + ℓ − ( ℓ = e , μ ) process using 626 fb − 1 of data collected by the Belle experiment near the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance. We validate the backgrounds with multiple control regions in data, using a novel multiclass multivariate event classifier. In absence of a signal, we quote upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the coupling between ϕ L and leptons. Our bounds, obtained in a blinded approach, are 19% more constraining than the previous limits, averaged over the mass range 0.04 ≤ m ϕ L ≤ 6.5 GeV . We exclude the parameter space below 4 GeV favored by measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

e + e – → ZH process in the SMEFT beyond leading order

We systematically study potential effects of Beyond the Standard Model physics in the e + e – → ZH process. To this end, we include all relevant dimension-6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory operators and work to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in the electroweak coupling. We consider both polarized and unpolarized electron and positron beams and present results for $\sqrt {s}$ = 240, 365 and 500 GeV, emphasizing contributions where the NLO predictions differ significantly from the leading order results. At NLO, a sensitivity arises to operators that do not contribute at tree level, such as the Higgs tri-linear coupling, CP-violating operators, and dimension-6 operators involving the top quark, among many others. We compare the prospects of future e + e – colliders to explore these new physics effects with existing measurements from the LHC, electron EDMs (for CP violating operators), and Z pole measurements.

Recoil-safe subtraction, matching and merging in e$^{+}$e$^{−}$ → hadrons

We present the first next-to-leading order matched and multi-jet merged predictions based on the Alaric parton shower. The components needed for infrared subtraction in the S-Mc@Nlo algorithm are computed analytically for the case of color singlet decays to hadronic final states and validated against existing approaches for up to e$^{−}$e$^{+}$ → 5 jets. Phenomenological results for e$^{−}$e$^{+}$ → hadrons at the Z pole are obtained with up to five jets at next-to-leading order precision, for the first time using an evolution algorithm with NLL-preserving kinematics mapping.

Precision e + e − hemisphere masses in the dijet region with power corrections

We derive high-precision results for the e + e − heavy jet mass (HJM) dσ/dρ and dihemisphere mass (DHM) d 2 σ/(ds 1 ds 2 ) distributions, for s 1 ~ s 2 , in the dijet region. New results include: i) the N 3 LL resummation for HJM of large logarithms ln n (ρ) at small ρ including the exact two-loop non-global hemisphere soft function, the 4-loop cusp anomalous dimension and the 3-loop hard and jet functions, ii) N 3 LL results for DHM with resummation of logarithms ln(s 1,2 /Q 2 ) when there is no large separation between s 1 and s 2 , iii) profile functions for HJM to give results simultaneously valid in the peak and tail regions, iv) a complete two-dimensional basis of non-perturbative functions which can be used for double differential observables, that are needed for both HJM and DHM in the peak region, and v) an implementation of renormalon subtractions for large-angle soft radiation to $\mathcal{O}$ (α$^{3}_{s}$) together with a resummation of the additional large ln(Qρ/Λ QCD ) logarithms. Here Q is the e + e − center-of-mass energy. Our resummation results are combined with known fixed-order $\mathcal{O}$ (α$^{3}_{s}$) results and we discuss the convergence and remaining perturbative uncertainty in the cross section. We also prove that, at order 1/Q, the first moment of the HJM distribution involves an additional non-perturbative parameter compared to the power correction that shifts the tail of the spectrum (where 1 ≫ ρ ≫ Λ QCD /Q). This differs from thrust where a single non-perturbative parameter at order 1/Q describes both the first moment and the tail, and it disfavors models of power corrections employing a single non-perturbative parameter, such as the low-scale effective coupling model. In this paper we focus only on the dijet region, not the far-tail distribution for ρ ≳ 0.2 beyond which the trijet factorization and resummation become important.

New determination of the branching ratio of the structure dependent radiative K + → e + ν e γ

The branching ratio of the structure dependent (SD) radiative K + → e + ν e γ decay relative to that of the K + → e + ν e (γ) decay including the internal bremsstrahlung (IB) process (K e2 (γ) ) has been measured in the J-PARC E36 experiment using plastic scintillator/lead sandwich detectors, in contrast to the previous E36 measurement, which used a CsI(Tl) calorimeter. In the analysis, the effect of IB was also taken into account in the SD radiative decay as $K$$^{SD}_{e2γ(γ)}$. By combining the new data with the previous E36 result after revision for the IB correction for $K$$^{SD}_{e2γ(γ)}$, a new value Br($K$$^{SD}_{e2γ(γ)}$)/Br(Ke 2(γ) ) = 1.20 ± 0.07 has e2γ(γ) e2γ(γ) been determined. This is consistent with a recent lattice QCD calculation, but larger than the expectation of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) at order O(p 4 ) and the previous KLOE value. Using the method to relate form factor and branching ratio described in the KLOE paper, the present result is also consistent with the form factor prediction based on a gauged nonlocal chiral quark model, but larger than that from ChPT at order O(p 6 ).

Bubble Point Measurements of Three Binary Mixtures of Refrigerants: R-32/1234yf, R-32/1234ze(E), and R-1132a/1234yf

In this article, bubble point pressures of three binary mixtures at two compositions each have been measured utilizing a static method. The mixtures studied were difluoromethane + 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene (R-32/1234yf), difluoromethane + (E)-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene (R-32/1234ze(E)), and 1,1-difluoroethene + 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene (R-1132a/1234yf). For all of the mixtures, the minimum temperature measured was 270 K. The maximum temperatures measured for the R-32/1234ze(E), R-32/1234yf, and R-1132a/1234yf mixtures were 360, 345, and 325 K, respectively. A total of 100 bubble point pressures are reported and compared to available literature data relative to the REFPROP database. Lemmon, E. W. [ NIST Standard Reference Database 23: Reference Fluid Thermodynamic and Transport Properties-REFPROP, 10.0; National Institute of Standards and Technology, Standard Reference Data Program: Gaithersburg, 2018]. Additionally, the bubble point pressures obtained in this study are modeled using the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) equation of state. The PC-SAFT model parameters, as well as deviations of this work and literature data from the model, are reported.

Expected ${\boldsymbol H \xrightarrow{} {\boldsymbol{\mu^+\mu^-}}} $ measurement precision with ${\boldsymbol { e^{+}e^{-}}{\bf \xrightarrow{}}{ \boldsymbol{Z(q\bar{q})H}}}$ production at the CEPC *

Here, a search for the dimuon decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson is performed using Monte Carlo simulated events to mimic data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 ab -1 collected with the Circular Electron-Positron Collider detector in e + e - collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =240 GeV. This study investigates the e + e - →ZH, Z → $q\bar{q}$, H → μ + μ - process, and the expected significance considering only the statistical uncertainty in the data for a background-only hypothesis for a Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV is found to be 6.1 σ, corresponding to a precision of 19%. The systematic impacts from the background Monte Carlo statistical fluctuations are estimated to be negligible. Moreover, the dependence of the measurement accuracy on the muon momentum resolution of the CEPC detector is investigated. It is found that the muon momentum resolution must be better than 204 MeV to discover the H →μμ process at the nominal integrated luminosity. If the resolution is 100% worse than the designed parameter, the integrated luminosity must be greater than 7.2 ab -1 to reach 5σ significance.

First Search for Dark Sector e+e- Explanations of the MiniBooNE Anomaly at MicroBooNE

The MiniBooNE anomaly has puzzled the neutrino physics community for over two decades. MicroBooNE has previously searched for anomalous electron and photon excesses as potential explanations but the mystery persists. In this poster, we present the first direct test of dark sector models in which dark neutrinos scatter, then decay into e+e− pairs and missing energy, mimicking the MiniBooNE signal. These models have recently emerged as compelling candidates that evade existing constraints. Using 6.87×1020 protons-on-target in the Booster Neutrino Beam, we select forward-going, coherently produced e+e− events in the MicroBooNE detector. We observe 95 events against a constrained background prediction of 69.7±17.3. We set the world's first direct limits on this class of dark sector models, excluding at 95% CL the majority of parameter space viable as a solution to the MiniBooNE anomaly.

Extracting the \(\Lambda \) Polarizing Fragmentation Function from Belle e + e − Data within the TMD Formalism

Data from the Belle Collaboration for associated production (with a light unpolarized hadron) and single-inclusive production of transversely polarized Λ-hyperons in e + e − annihilation processes allowed to extract within a TMD approach, for the first time, the Λ polarizing fragmentation function. Recent theoretical developments on the computation of cross sections for single-inclusive hadron production in e + e − annihilation processes, within a Soft Collinear Effective Theory approach, combined with the CSS formalism for the double-hadron production case, can be used to perform a renewed analysis, adopting a full TMD factorization scheme. Preliminary results and a comparison between the two analyses are presented.

From Science to e-Science to Semantic e-Science: A Heliosphysics Case Study

The past few years have witnessed unparalleled efforts to make scientific data web accessible. The Semantic Web has proven invaluable in this effort; however, much of the literature is devoted to system design, ontology creation, and trials and tribulations of current technologies. In order to fully develop the nascent field of Semantic e-Science we must also evaluate systems in real-world settings. We describe a case study within the field of Heliophysics and provide a comparison of the evolutionary stages of data discovery, from manual to semantically enable. We describe the socio-technical implications of moving toward automated and intelligent data discovery. In doing so, we highlight how this process enhances what is currently being done manually in various scientific disciplines. Our case study illustrates that Semantic e-Science is more than just semantic search. The integration of search with web services, relational databases, and other cyberinfrastructure is a central tenet of our case study and one that we believe has applicability as a generalized research area within Semantic e-Science. This case study illustrates a specific example of the benefits, and limitations, of semantically replicating data discovery. We show examples of significant reductions in time and effort enable by Semantic e-Science; yet, we argue that a "complete" solution requires integrating semantic search with other research areas such as data provenance and web services.

Initial state QED radiation aspects for future $e^+e^-$ colliders

This white paper concerns theoretical and phenomenological aspects relevant to the physics of future $e^+e^-$ colliders, in particular regarding initial-state QED radiation. The contributions each contain key technical aspects, and are formulated in a pedagogical manner so as to render them accessible also to those who are not directly working on these and immediately-related topics. This should help both experts and non-experts understand the theoretical challenges that we shall face at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. Specifically, this paper contains descriptions of the treatment of initial state radiation from several Monte Carlo collaborations, as well as contributions that explain a number of more theoretical developments with promise of future phenomenological impact.

First Observation of Large Missing-Momentum (e,e'p) Cross-Section Scaling and the onset of Correlated-Pair Dominance in Nuclei

We report the first measurement of $x_B$-scaling in $(e,e'p)$ cross-section ratios off nuclei relative to deuterium at large missing-momentum of $350 \leq p_{miss} \leq 600$ MeV/c. The observed scaling extends over a kinematic range of $0.7 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$, which is significantly wider than $1.4 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$ previously observed for inclusive $(e,e')$ cross-section ratios. The $x_B$-integrated cross-section ratios become constant (i.e., scale) beginning at $p_{miss}\approx k_F$, the nuclear Fermi momentum. Comparing with theoretical calculations we find good agreement with Generalized Contact Formalism calculations for high missing-momentum ($> 375$ MeV/c), suggesting the observed scaling results from interacting with nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. For low missing-momenta, mean-field calculations show good agreement with the data for $p_{miss}\le k_F$, and suggest that contributions to the measured cross-section ratios from scattering off single, un-correlated, nucleons are non-negligible up to $p_{miss}\approx 350$ MeV/c. Therefore, SRCs become dominant in nuclei at $p_{miss}\approx 350$ MeV/c, well above the nuclear Fermi Surface of $k_F \approx 250$ MeV/c.

Signal Extraction and Simulations for n -> p^0 y y and n -> p+p-e+e- Decays at the Jefferson Lab Eta Factory

The Jefferson Lab eta Factory (JEF) began acquiring data in early 2025. The experiment aims to give insight into the connection between Dark Matter physics models and the Standard Model by investigating rare decay processes of n and n' mesons. Several other physics motivations are also a key factor in the experiment, such as probing C and/or P violation and aspects of chiral perturbation theory. For these purposes, the forward calorimeter of the GlueX experiment in Jefferson Lab was upgraded so that it provides greater positional and energy resolution. Understanding physics-motivated cuts and background removal methods is of great importance to achieving JEF goals. Several methods have been implemented to obtain invariant mass plots for the “golden” channel of interest ¿ ¿ p0¿¿, while channels such as ¿ ¿ p+p-e+e- open a promising window into CP-violating physics. This thesis work shows a sig nificant background reduction in rare decay channels of interest, asymmetry factors comparable to recent experimental measurements, an evaluation on which analysis cuts to use after data acquisition and the likelihood of probing specific rare ¿ decays. Despite background rejection from obstructing decay channels, much remains to do to extract the p0¿¿ final-state. The asymmetry between the pion and lepton planes looks promising for p+p-e+e-; simulations show that the asymmetry is consistent with zero (no instrumental asymmetry), and the next step should include generators that model the physics of the asymmetry. This thesis work may help in the effort of probing CP-violating physics or solving the mysteries between “beyond-Standard Model” and our current understanding of physics.

Probing Few-Body Nuclear Dynamics via H 3 and He 3 ( e , e ' p ) pn Cross-Section Measurements

Here, we report the first measurement of the (e, e' p) three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 ( 3 He) and tritium ( 3 H) at large momentum transfer ($\langle{Q^2}\rangle$ ≈ 1.9 (GeV/c) 2 ) and x B > 1 kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta 40 ≤ p miss ≤ 500 MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within ±20%, is observed between data and calculations for the full p miss range for 3 H and for 100 ≤ p miss ≤ 350 MeV/c for 3 He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at p miss > 250 MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of 3 He plus 3 H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire pmiss range. This validates current models of the ground state of the three-nucleon system up to very high initial nucleon momenta of 500 MeV/c.

The cross-section measurement for the 3 H($e, e'K^+)nnΛ$ reaction

The small binding energy of the hypertriton leads to predictions of the non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as nnΛ. However, invariant mass spectroscopy at GSI has reported events that may be interpreted as the bound nnΛ state. The nnΛ state was sought by missing-mass spectroscopy via the (e, e'K + ) reaction at Jefferson Lab’s experimental Hall A. The present experiment has higher sensitivity to the nnΛ-state investigation in terms of better precision by a factor of about three. The analysis shown in this article focuses on the derivation of the reaction cross-section for the 3 H(γ*, K + )X reaction. Events that were detected in an acceptance, where a Monte Carlo simulation could reproduce the data well (|δp/p| < 4%), were analyzed to minimize the systematic uncertainty. No significant structures were observed with the acceptance cuts, and the upper limits of the production cross-section of the nnΛ state were obtained to be 21 and $31 nbsr -1 at the 90% confidence level when theoretical predictions of (-B Λ , Γ) = (0.25, 0.8) MeV and (0.55, 4.7) MeV, respectively, were assumed. The cross-section result provides valuable information for examining the existence of nnΛ.
