Observations of the plant growth and annual flooding in the inland delta of the Niger River, west Africa

The author has identified the following significant results. A large potential irrigation area with water delivery system in place was identified from ERTS-1 imagery. The site is in the Sahara Desert. Color additive change detection imagery was used to assess ground water potentials in the Savannah in conjunction with a major US AID-Mali livestock sector initiative. The potential capacity to map laterite deposits in the Inland Delta from space was established with the help of aerial and ground surveys. A color composite of the Inland Delta could have saved French biogeographers 3 5/6 man-years of professional field work had it been available, according to the man who prepared a plant community map of part of the southern Inland Delta.

Quaternary and quinary modifications of eutectic superalloys strengthened by delta Ni3Cb lamellae and gamma prime Ni3Al precipitates

By means of a compositional and heat treatment optimization program based on the quaternary gamma/gamma prime-delta, a tantalum modified gamma/gamma prime-delta alloy with improved shear and creep strength combined with better cyclic oxidation resistance was identified. Quinary additions, quaternary adjustments, and heat treatment were investigated. The tantalum modified gamma/gamma prime-delta alloy possessed a slightly higher liquidus temperature and exhibited rupture strength exceeding NASA VIA by approximately three and one-half Larson-Miller parameters (C = 20) above 1000 C. Although improvements in longitudinal mechanical properties were achieved, the shear and transverse strength property goals of the program were not met and present a continuing challenge to the alloy metallurgist.

Effect of thermal cycling in a Mach 0.3 burner rig on properties and structure of directionally solidified gamma/gamma prime - delta eutectic

Tensile and stress rupture properties at 1040 C of a thermally cycled gamma/gamma prime - delta eutectic were essentially equivalent to the as-grown properties. Tensile strength and rupture life at 760 C appeared to decrease slightly by thermal cycling. Thermal cycling resulted in gamma prime coarsening and Widmanstatten delta precipitation in the gamma phase. An unidentified precipitate, presumably gamma prime, was observed within the delta phase. The eutectic alloy exhibited a high rate of oxidation-erosion weight loss during thermal cycling in the Mach 0.3 burner rig.

Scattering of 4.5 eV electrons by ground /x 3 Sigma g minus/ state and metastable /a 1 Delta g/ oxygen molecules

The paper reports on differential and integral cross sections for scattering of 4.5 eV electrons by ground state (x 3 Sigma g minus) and metastable (a 1 Delta g) oxygen molecules in the -2.0 eV to plus 2.0 eV energy loss range. The cross section for the (a 1 Delta g to b 1 Sigma g plus) transition was found to be more than an order of magnitude larger than that of the excitation of the b state from the ground state. It was found that the principle of detailed balance can be applied to the rotationally unresolved inelastic and superelastic electronic transitions between the (x 3 Sigma g minus) and (a 1 Delta g) states, which indicates that for this transition one may neglect the very different rotational level structure of the two states in estimating superelastic cross section from inelastic data to an accuracy of about 15 per cent.

Use of LANDSAT data for resources investigation in the lower basin of Danube and Danube Delta

The author has identified the following significant results. A most important is that bands 4 and 5 very clearly show the sedimentary discharge into the sea and the spreading regime in the sea at the mouth of the Danube and out at sea at great distances to over 100 km. Another particularly significant result is shown by bands 6 and 7, presenting the successive stages of sediments in the Danube Delta, with the clear marking of the separation between the fluvial and marine delta. The survey of floods and of some of their effects may also be studied on all of the bands in the complex area of the Danube Delta and in the lower basin of the Danube.

Effect of thermal cycling in a Mach 0.3 burner rig on properties and structure of directionally solidified gamma/gamma prime-delta eutectic

An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the effect of cyclic thermal exposures on the mechanical properties of a gamma/gamma prime-delta eutectic alloy parallel to the growth direction. The alloy had a nominal composition by weight of Ni-20 Nb-6 Cr-2.5 Al and was directionally solidified at 3 cm/hr in a furnace with a thermal gradient of at least 200 C/cm. Bars of the alloy were exposed in a Mach 0.3 burner rig and cycled 300 times between 1100 and 425 C. Oxidation-erosion characteristics of the alloy were determined by weight loss measurements at 300-cycle intervals. After cyclic exposure, stress rupture and tensile tests were performed at both 760 and 1040 C. Microstructural changes from cyclic exposure were determined. Thermal cycling resulted in gamma prime coarsening and Widmanstaetten delta precipitation in the gamma phase. An unidentified precipitate, presumably gamma prime, was observed within the delta phase. These microstructural changes did not affect the mechanical properties of the eutectic. High oxidation-erosion weight loss rate was observed.

The effect of delta T /oxidizing temperature minus cooling temperature/ on oxide spallation

Several alloys (one iron base and five nickel base) were cyclically oxidized in a series of tests in which the higher temperature (1100 or 1200 C) of the cycle was fixed at a level to allow ample oxidation in reasonable time and the lower temperature was variable to allow cycle temperature differences of up to 1400 C. For all nickel alloys, as delta T increased the extent of spallation increased. This effect was attributed to thermal expansion mismatches between the oxide and the nickel substrate. The FeCrAl alloy was not sensitive to delta T and resisted spalling at delta T levels to 1400 C. FeCrAl, and the Al2O3 scale which forms on it, have thermal expansion coefficients which are substantially more alike than any of the other oxide-metal combinations tested.

Feasibility study of tungsten as a diffusion barrier between nickel-chromium-aluminum and Gamma/Gamma prime - Delta eutectic alloys

Coating systems proposed for potential use on eutectic alloy components in high-temperature gas turbine engines were studied with emphasis on deterioration of such systems by diffusion. A 1-mil thick W sheet was placed between eutectic alloys and a NiCrAl layer. Layered test specimens were aged at 1100 C for as long as long as 500 hours. Without the W barrier, the delta phase of the eutectic deteriorated by diffusion of Nb into the NiCrAl. Insertion of the W barrier stopped the diffusion of Nb from delta. Chromium diffusion from the NiCrAl into the gamma/gamma prime phase of the eutectic was greatly reduced by the barrier. However, the barrier thickness decreased with time; and W diffused into both the NiCrAl and the eutectic. When the delta platelets were alined parallel to the NiCrAl layer, rather than perpendicular, diffusion into the eutectic was reduced.

Voice encoding for the Space Shuttle using adaptive delta modulation

The paper describes the SONG and modified ABATE adaptive delta modulation algorithms for voice encoding. Waveforms of the response of the delta modulators to channel errors are given, and performance data which show the relationship between channel errors and word intelligibility are provided. An analytic derivation yielding a comparison between PCM and adaptive delta modulation with respect to channel errors is given. The Space Shuttle is employing the modified-ABATE device because it can tolerate a high error rate and operates at a relatively low sampling rate.

O2/1 Delta/ emission in the day and night airglow of Venus

An intense airglow from O2(1 Delta) at 1.27 microns on both the light and the dark sides of Venus has been detected by using a ground-based high-resolution Fourier-transform spectrometer. Both dayglow and nightglow are roughly 1,000 times brighter than the visible O2 nightglow found by Veneras 9 and 10 in 1975. The column emission rate of O2(1 Delta) from Venus is close to the rate at which fresh O atoms are produced from photolysis of CO2 on the day side. Formation of O2(1 Delta) is thus a major step in the removal of O atoms from the atmosphere, and dynamical processes must carry these atoms to the night side fast enough to yield a maximum density near 90 km, which is almost constant over the planet.

Types of leeside flow over delta wings

It is noted that so far most systematic investigations on the lee side flow over delta wings at supersonic speeds are concerned with flat upper surfaces. On the basis of these results, the paper makes an attempt to characterize the different types of flow over a wing with a delta-shaped upper surface by varying a number of parameters. It is concluded that the work should be considered a first step toward systematizing the flow over delta-shaped lee sides as well.

The detection of interstellar fluorine in the line of sight toward Delta Scorpii

The resonance line of F I at 954.825 A is detected in the interstellar spectra of Delta Sco, and possibly Delta Ori, and upper limits are obtained toward five other stars. It is noted that the equivalent width for Delta Sco of 10.9(+4.5, -3.1) in milliangstroms corresponds to a column density of 1.52(+0.60, -0.43) x 10 to the 13th/sq cm and a depletion of -0.53(+0.15, -0.14) dex. For the other lines of sight, depletions of at least 0.1-0.5 dex are inferred. The results are discussed in the context of current theories of the depletion process.

WESTAR-V launch on delta

The WESTAR-V, the second in a series of second-generation, large, 24-transponder communications satellites developed for the Space Communications Company is discussed. It is scheduled to be launched on a Delta vehicle from the Eastern Space and Missile Center no earlier than June 8, 1982. The launch support for this mission will be provided by NASA, on a reimbursable basis, to the Space Communications Company for a fixed price of $25.OM. The launch vehicle for the WESTAR-V mission will be the Delta 3910 configuration which incorporates an extended long tank Thor booster, nine Castor IV strap-on motors, a TR-201 second stage, and an 8-foot fairing. The Delta launch vehicle will place the spacecraft along a suborbital trajectory. The PAM-D stage will then thrust it to a synchronous transfer orbit. Three days after launch, the spacecraft apogee kick motor will be fired to circularize its orbit at geosynchronous altitude of 19,300 NM above the equator at approxmately 75 degrees west longitude.

Wideband Delta VLBI for deep space navigation

Developments in the area of deep space tracking and navigation during the last decade are briefly reviewed, and advantages offered by wideband differential Very Long Baseline Interferometry (Delta VLBI) are discussed. Delta VLBI data from a spacecraft and an angularly nearby extragalactic radio source promise to provide a factor of five improvement in deep space navigation accuracies as compared with those presently obtained by conventional radiometric tracking. Results of a restricted bandwidth demonstration of wideband Delta VLBI employing the Voyager spacecraft are analyzed.

The delta-four-stream approximation for radiative flux transfer

An approximate technique for solving the radiative transfer problem for fluxes reflected, transmitted, and absorbed by a homogeneous scattering layer is presented. The technique is a straightforward delta-function modification of a solution to the transfer equation in closed form via the discrete-ordinates method with four streams. By the use of four streams, significant improvement in accuracy is obtained for anisotropic phase functions over that obtained by similarly employed two-stream approximations with delta-functions. However, the computational effort is increased only slightly. Equations are developed for the general case of a layer underlaid by a reflecting Lambert surface. Graphical comparisons are given of fractional error resulting from the use of this method with that resulting from the use of typical four-stream and delta-two-stream techniques.

A split delta-V technique for drift control of geosynchronous spacecraft

A split-delta-V technique is presented for the east-west stationkeeping of geosynchronous spacecraft using the linearized optimal transfer strategies for near-circular coplanar orbits. The maneuvers are carried out by taking advantage of the dynamics of the spacecraft in order to cancel out the effect of the drift accumulated between successive impulsive delta-V's. A stability analysis is then carried out in order to determine the effect of implementing a series of precanned maneuvers at the end of each drift cycle in an autonomous mode by taking into account initial orbit determination uncertainties and execution errors emanating from each delta-V. It is shown that small tolerance deadbands are violated after only a few cycles and the system is unstable.

Simulation of the Galileo spacecraft axial - Delta-V algorithm

Preliminary results are presented from the analysis of the Galileo spacecraft axial delta-V algorithm. The Galileo spacecraft is a dual spin interplanetary spacecraft which will study the four Galilean moons of Jupiter as well as the Jovian environment and atmosphere. In order to achieve orbit about Jupiter and accurately deliver the probe to the planet's upper atmosphere, the Galileo spacecraft must be capable of performing many trajectory corrections or delta-V maneuvers. Twelve 10 Newton thrusters and one 400 Newton engine are utilized for this purpose. There are many maneuver modes and control algorithms available to the spacecraft. In this paper only the analysis of the axial delta-V algorithm will be discussed. The analysis consists of two parts: an analytic study and a simulation study. The analytic results are based on rigid body dynamics, while the simulation includes the first order effect of the flexible magnetometer boom and nutation damper. The simulation utilizes a program developed at JPL which allows flexible body effects to be simulated by modeling a collection of rigid bodies attached together by hinges, springs and dampers. In this preliminary study of the Galileo only two rigid bodies were used in the simulation, but many more can and will be used in the final tests. In this analysis, the algorithm appears to be working correctly and the analytic and simulation results agree very well.

Delta capability for launch of communications satellites

The evolution of capabilities and the current performance levels of the Delta launch vehicle are outlined. The first payload was the Echo I passive communications satellite, weighing 179 lb, and placed in GEO in 1960. Emphasis since then has been to use off-the-shelf hardware where feasible. The latest version in the 3924 first stage, 3920 second stage, and Pam D apogee kick motor third stage. The Delta is presently equipped to place 2800 lb in GEO, as was proven with the 2717 lb Anik-D1 satellite. The GEO payload placement performance matches the Shuttle's, and work is therefore under way to enhance the Delta performance to handle more massive payloads. Installation of the Castor-IV solid motor separation system, thereby saving mass by utilizing compressed nitrogen, rather than mechanical thrusters to remove the strap-on boosters, is indicated, together with use of a higher performance propellant and a wider nose fairing.
