A polar graphic method for determining the attitude of rocket vehicles

Graphic method of determining rocket attitudes by plotting data obtained by fluxgate magnetometers and solar aspect sensors utilizes polar coordinates. Polar graph paper is used to represent either the horizon system of altitude and azimuth or the celestial system of declination and right ascensions.

Space shuttle: Aerodynamic characteristics of 0.003367 scale models of the MMC retro-glide booster alone and mated with the MSC 040-A orbiter

Plotted data results are presented of aerodynamic tests conducted on the 0.003367 scale models of the retro-glide booster alone and mated with the 040A orbiter. The test was conducted in the NASA/MSFC 14 Inch Trisonic Wind Tunnel over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 4.95 with angles of attack varying from -10 deg to 60 deg. The test was to obtain six degree of freedom force and moment data on the launch configuration and booster reentry configuration for preliminary stability and control analysis.

Estimating sorber capacity for multiple contaminants

Computer program estimates quantity of activated charcoal required to control multiple contaminants. Program scans all contaminants by potential parameter value and then orders them from lowest to highest values. It calculates quantity of sorbent required to remove most strongly adsorbed material; and then, using potential plot data, capacity of other materials is calculated on basis of corrected capacity.

Generalized curve fit and plotting (GECAP) program

Program generates graphs on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper and is designed to be used by engineers and scientists who are not necessarily professional programers. It provides fast and efficient method for display of plotted data without having to generate any additional FORTRAN instructions.

Are BL Lac-type objects nearby black holes

It is pointed out that isolated black holes accreting interstellar gas can account for the characteristic properties of the Lacertids. Emission spectra for various interstellar gas densities and black hole masses are compared with the data plotted by Strittmatter et al. (1972) for the BL Lac-type objects. Rough estimates indicate that there may indeed be a finite number of stellar-mass black holes close to the earth as required by the theory. If it is determined that the BL Lac-type objects lie outside of the galactic disk a black hole accretion model may still apply if certain conditions are satisfied.

A simple method of calculating power-law velocity profile exponents from experimental data

Analytical expressions for the effects of compressibility and heat transfer on laminar and turbulent shape factors H have been developed. Solving the turbulent equation for the power law velocity profile exponent N has resulted in a simple technique by which the N values of experimental turbulent profiles can be calculated directly from the integral parameters. Thus the data plotting, curve fitting, and slope measuring, which is the normal technique of obtaining experimental N values, is eliminated. The N values obtained by this method should be within the accuracy with which they could be measured.

Elemental composition of suspended particulates as functions of space and time in Cleveland, Ohio

An approach to the analysis of a very large elemental concentration data set. The particular data considered was generated by instrumental neutron activation and emission spectroscopy analyses of over 750 24-hour ambient air particulate samples collected at 16 sites in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 15 months from August 1971 thru October 1972. Examples are presented that show the use of multiple approaches to interpreting the data, including pairwise correlation statistics, selective data plotting and cluster analysis.

Pressure Distribution at Subsonic Speeds over the Forepart of Two Blunt Circular Cylinders

A wind tunnel investigation was made at subsonic speeds to determine the pressure distribution over the forward part of a circular cylinder. The cylinder was equipped with interchangeable faces, one having a flat face and one having a dome shaped face. The investigation was made over angle of attack range from -1 deg to 26 deg and a Mach number range from 0.30 to 0.89. Pressure coefficients are presented in tabular form and plotted data are presented for some selected angles of attack about the surface of the cylinder.

Tools for computer graphics applications

Extensive research in computer graphics has produced a collection of basic algorithms and procedures whose utility spans many disciplines. These tools are described in terms of their fundamental aspects, implementations, applications, and availability. Programs which are discussed include basic data plotting, curve smoothing, and depiction of three dimensional surfaces. As an aid to potential users of these tools, particular attention is given to discussing their availability and, where applicable, their cost.

Wind tunnel investigation of rotor lift and propulsive force at high speed: Data analysis

The basic test data obtained during the lift-propulsive force limit wind tunnel test conducted on a scale model CH-47b rotor are analyzed. Included are the rotor control positions, blade loads and six components of rotor force and moment, corrected for hub tares. Performance and blade loads are presented as the rotor lift limit is approached at fixed levels of rotor propulsive force coefficients and rotor tip speeds. Performance and blade load trends are documented for fixed levels of rotor lift coefficient as propulsive force is increased to the maximum obtainable by the model rotor. Test data is also included that defines the effect of stall proximity on rotor control power. The basic test data plots are presented in volumes 2 and 3.

Generalized environmental control and life support system computer program (G189A) configuration control, phase 2

The G189A simulation of the Shuttle Orbiter ECLSS was upgraded. All simulation library versions and simulation models were converted from the EXEC2 to the EXEC8 computer system and a new program, G189PL, was added to the combination master program library. The program permits the post-plotting of up to 100 frames of plot data over any time interval of a G189 simulation run. The overlay structure of the G189A simulations were restructured for the purpose of conserving computer core requirements and minimizing run time requirements.

Application of wheat yield model to United States and India

The author has identified the following significant results. The wheat yield model was applied to the major wheat-growing areas of the US and India. In the US Great Plains, estimates from the winter and spring wheat models agreed closely with USDA-SRS values in years with the lowest yields, but underestimated in years with the highest yields. Application to the Eastern Plains and Northwest indicated the importance of cultural factors, as well as meteorological ones in the model. It also demonstrated that the model could be used, in conjunction with USDA-SRRS estimates, to estimate yield losses due to factors not included in the model, particularly diseases and freezes. A fixed crop calendar for India was built from a limited amount of available plot data from that country. Application of the yield model gave measurable evidence that yield variation from state to state was due to different mixes of levels of meteorological and cultural factors.
