Broad-band half-wave dipole

A fan-dipole or bowtie element operating over a ground plane has been empirically designed to maximize the impedance bandwidth near the half-wavelength resonance. It is shown that a bandwidth of 37 percent can be achieved with a simple bowtie element less than a half-wavelength at the center frequency. This design could be useful as a radiating element in a wide-band phased array application or as a wide-band reflector feed or cavity-backed dipole.

Reverberation effects on directionality and response of stationary monopole and dipole sources in a wind tunnel

Analytical solutions for the three dimensional inhomogeneous wave equation with flow in a hardwall rectangular wind tunnel and in the free field are presented for a stationary monopole noise source. Dipole noise sources are calculated by combining two monopoles 180 deg out of phase. Numerical calculations for the modal content, spectral response and directivity for both monopole and dipole sources are presented. In addition, the effect of tunnel alterations, such as the addition of a mounting plate, on the tunnels reverberant response are considered. In the frequency range of practical importance for the turboprop response, important features of the free field directivity can be approximated in a hardwall wind tunnel with flow if the major lobe of the noise source is not directed upstream. However, for an omnidirectional source, such as a monopole, the hardwall wind tunnel and free field response are not comparable.

Electron-atom spin asymmetry and two-electron photodetachment - Addenda to the Coulomb-dipole threshold law

Temkin (1982) has derived the ionization threshold law based on a Coulomb-dipole theory of the ionization process. The present investigation is concerned with a reexamination of several aspects of the Coulomb-dipole threshold law. Attention is given to the energy scale of the logarithmic denominator, the spin-asymmetry parameter, and an estimate of alpha and the energy range of validity of the threshold law, taking into account the result of the two-electron photodetachment experiment conducted by Donahue et al. (1984).

Theoretical study of the dipole moments of selected alkaline-earth halides

Ab initio calculations at the self-consistent-field (SCF), singles-plus-doubles configuration-interaction (SDCI), and coupled-pair functional (CPF) level, are reported for the dipole moments and dipole derivatives of the X2Sigma(+) ground states of BeF, BeCl, MgF, MgCl, CaF, CaCl, and SrF. For comparison, analogous calculations are performed for the X1Sigma(+) state of KCl. The CPF results are found to be in remarkably better agreement with experiment than are the SCF and SDCI results. Apparently higher excitations are required to properly describe the radial extent along the bond axis of the remaining valence electron on the alkaline-earth metal.

Theoretical study of the electric dipole moment function of the ClO molecule

The potential energy function and electric dipole moment function (EDMF) are computed for ClO X 2Pi using several different techniques to include electron correlation. The EDMF is used to compute Einstein coefficients, vibrational lifetimes, and dipole moments in higher vibrational levels. The band strength of the 1-0 fundamental transition is computed to be 12 + or - 2 per sq cm atm determined from infrared heterodyne spectroscopy. The theoretical methods used include SCF, CASSCF, multireference singles plus doubles configuration interaction (MRCI) and contracted CI, coupled pair functional (CPF), and a modified version of the CPF method. The results obtained using the different methods are critically compared.

Dipole moments and transition probabilities of the a 3Sigma(+)g - b 3Sigma(+)u system of molecular hydrogen

Multiconfiguration variational calculations of the electronic wave functions of the a 3Sigma(+)g and b 3Sigma(+)u states of molecular hydrogen are presented, and the electric dipole transition moment between them (of interest in connection with stellar atmospheres and the UV spectrum of the Jovian planets) is obtained. The dipole moment is used to calculate the probabilities of radiative transitions from the discrete vibrational levels of the a 3Sigma(+)g state to the vibrational continuum of the repulsive b 3Sigma(+)u state as functions of the wavelength of the emitted photons. The total transition probabilities and radiative lifetimes of the levels v prime = 0-20 are presented.

Satellite sweeping in offset, tilted dipole fields

The paper presents a theory for the longitudinally averaged satellite sweeping rate in an offset, tilted dipole magnetic field. It includes the reductions in the sweeping rate when the moon radius is not large compared to the gyroradius or the azimuthal drift distance during a bounce period. With a large tilt angle between the magnetic and rotation axes, moons make large excursions in dipole L value, and more than one moon can sweep at a given L. The sweeping rate peaks at the minimum L for each moon. If the gyroradius is large, additional peaks can occur when the particle mirrors near the moon latitude. To illustrate the theory, sweeping rates are evaluated for parameters relevant to the observations at Uranus by the Voyager 2 Low Energy Charged Particles Experiment. Calculated sweeping rates for ions and electrons are typically two or three orders of magnitude less than the strong-diffusion loss rate. The observation of sweeping signatures at Uranus would imply that pitch-angle scattering there occurs at a rate far below the strong-diffusion limit, contrasting with the situation for energetic ions in the inner Jovian magnetosphere.

Differential oscillator strengths and dipole polarizabilities for transitions of the helium sequence

The dipole radial integral for an initial discrete 1s state and a final continuum state has been calculated under the screened hydrogenic model. In this model, single-electron hydrogenic wave functions are employed, and the initial and the final states are treated by two different effective-charge parameters. Numerical values of differential oscillator strengths for transitions from 1s2 1S to the continuum for the helium sequence ions are obtained. Also calculated are the dipole polarizabilities, which are found to be in excellent agreement with the results of other authors.

Theoretical study of the dipole moment function of OH(X2Pi)

A theoretical study of the sensitivity of the dipole moment function (DMF) of the X2Pi ground state of OH to basis-set saturation and to refinements in the correlation treatment is presented. Emphasis is placed on determining the slope of the DMF at r(e) and the r value at which the maximum occurs. Consideration is given to the effect of oxygen polarization functions up through h type, expansion of the active orbital space to include the O 3d-delta orbital, the effect of higher excitations using the averaged coupled-pair functional method, and the effect of evaluating the dipole moment as an energy derivative rather than as an expectation value. The theoretical DMFs obtained here, which should be the most accurate to date, differ markedly from an empirical DMF of Turnbull and Lowe that is based on experimentally derived intensity ratios. The theoretical DMFs agree better with a recently published DMF of Nelson et al., but suggest that this empirical DMF is also inaccurate for r greater than 2.3 a0.

Electric dipole moment of the electron and of the neutron

It is shown that if Higgs-boson exchange mediates CP violation a significant electric dipole moment for the electron can result. Analogous effects can contribute to the neutron's electric dipole moment at a level competitive with Weinberg's three-gluon operator.

Model of Jovian F region ionosphere (Saturnian ionosphere in offset dipole approximation)

Researchers investigated the offset effect of Saturn's dipole on its ionosphere. The magnetic field of Saturn is primarily that of a dipole closely aligned to the rotational axis, but displaced northward from the center by a distance approximately equal to 0.05 R sub S, R sub S being the reference radius of Saturn. This offset effect would manifest itself most prominently between the ionospheric profiles in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres of Saturn.

Inclusion of Theta(12) dependence in the Coulomb-dipole theory of the ionization threshold

The Coulomb-dipole (CD) theory of the electron-atom impact-ionization threshold law is extended to include the full electronic repulsion. It is found that the threshold law is altered to a form in contrast to the previous angular-independent model. A second energy regime, is also identified wherein the 'threshold' law reverts to its angle-independent form. In the final part of the paper the dipole parameter is estimated to be about 28. This yields numerical estimates of E(a) = about 0.0003 and E(b) = about 0.25 eV.

Dipole moments and transition probabilities of the i 3Pi sub g-b 3Sigma(+) sub u, c 3Pi sub u-a 3Sigma(+) sub g, and i 3Pi sub g-c 3Pi sub u systems of molecular hydrogen

Bonn-Oppenheimer-based ab initio calculations of dipole moments from the i 3Pi sub g-b 3Sigma(+) sub u, c 3Pi sub u-a 3Sigma(+) sub g, and i 3Pi sub g-c 3Pi sub u transitions of H2 have been conducted, to yield a tabulation of the dipole transition probabilities and Franck-Condon factors. These factors are given for transitions originating in the lowest vibrational level of the ground X 1Sigma(+) sub g state.

Double dipole antenna SIS receivers at 100 and 400 GHz

Antenna patterns were measured between 95 and 120 GHz for a double dipole antenna / ellipsoidal lens combination. The structure produces a non-astigmatic beam with low side lobe levels over that whole band. A heterodyne SIS receiver based on this concept gave a best noise temperature of 145 K DSB at 98 GHz. Measurements were also made with a 400 GHz heterodyne SIS receiver, using a double dipole antenna in conjunction with a hyperhemispherical lens. The best noise temperature was 220 K DSB at 402 GHz. On-chip stubs were used to tune out the SIS junction capacitance.

Bond length, dipole moment, and harmonic frequency of CO

A detailed comparison of some properties of CO is given, at the modified coupled-pair functional, single and double excitation coupled-cluster (CCSD), and CCSD(T) levels of theory (including a perturbational estimate for connected triple excitations), using a variety of basis sets. With very large one-particle basis sets, the CCSD(T) method gives excellent results for the bond distance, dipole moment, and harmonic frequency of CO. In a (6s 5p 4d 3f 2g 1h) + (1s 1p 1d) basis set, the bond distance is about 0.005a0 too large, the dipole moment about 0.005 a.u. too small, and the frequency about 6/cm too small, when compared with experimental results.

Waves in space plasma dipole antenna subsystem

The Waves In Space Plasma (WISP) flight experiment requires a 50-meter-long deployable dipole antenna subsystem (DASS) to radiate radio frequencies from the STS Orbiter cargo bay. The transmissions are to excite outer ionospheric plasma between the dipole and a free-flying receiver (Spartan) for scientific purposes. This report describes the singular DASS design requirements and how the resulting design satisfies them. A jettison latch is described in some detail. The latch releases the antenna in case of any problems which might prevent the bay doors from closing for re-entry and landing of the Orbiter.

Imaging the effect of dipole tilt on magetotail boundaries

Eight years of Interplanetary Monitoring Platform (IMP) 8, four years of International Sun Earth Explorer (ISEE) 2, and one year of IMP 7 magnetometer data have been combined to produce an 'image' of the average magnetic field for a YZ cross section (aberrated GSM) of the magnetotail at a downtail distance of 25 R(sub E). The shape of the neutral sheet and magnetopause boundaries can be observed directly from the images. A fitting function that qualitatively matches the observed boundary shape can then be chosen. This approach improves on previous fits to possible unsuitable functional forms specified independently of the data. In addition, as a refinement of previous studies, we have corrected for varying solar wind dynamic pressure and the effects of tail flaring. We find the magnetopause is displaced above the XY plane with increasing dipole tilt. The neutral sheet is found to curve slightly more than the model of Fairlfield (1980) during times of large dipole tilt and near the flanks appears to differ substantially from the neutral sheet shape given by the analytic model of Voigt (1984), the more recent neutral sheet model of Dandouras (1988) based on the Voigt model, and the semi-empirical model of Tsyganenko (1989).
